Optical identification of hybrid magnetic and electric excitations in Dy3Fe5O12 garnet

Far-infrared spectra of magneto-dielectric Dy3Fe5O12 garnet were studied between 13 and 100 cm-1 and at low temperatures between 5 and 80 K. A combination of transmission, reflectivity, and rotating analyzer ellipsometry was used to unambiguously identify the type of the dipole activity of the infrared modes. In addition to purely dielectric and magnetic modes, we observed several hybrid modes with a mixed magnetic and electric dipole activity. These modes originate from the superexchange between magnetic moments of Fe and Dy ions. Using 4x4 matrix formalism for materials with Mu=/=1, we modeled the experimental optical spectra and determined the far-infrared dielectric and magnetic permeability functions. The matching condition Mu(Wh)*Se=Eps(Wh)*Sm for the oscillator strengths Se(m) explains the observed vanishing of certain hybrid modes at Wh in reflectivity.

Strong magnetoelastic effect on the magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$

Comparative studies of magnetoelectric susceptibility ($α$), magnetization ($M$), and magnetostriction ($u$) in TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ reveal that the increment of $M$ owing to the field-induced Tb$^{3+}$ spin alignment coins a field-asymmetric line shape in the $α(H)$ curve, being conspicuous in a low temperature incommensurate phase but persistently subsisting in the entire ferroelectric phase. Correlations among electric polarization, $u$, and $M^{2}$ variation represent linear relationships, unambiguously showing the significant role of Tb magnetoelastic effects on the low field magnetoelectric phenomena of TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$. An effective free energy capturing the observed experimental features is also suggested.

Tensor Correlations Measured in 3He(e,e'pp)n

We have measured the 3He(e,e'pp)n reaction at an incident energy of 4.7 GeV over a wide kinematic range. We identified spectator correlated pp and pn nucleon pairs using kinematic cuts and measured their relative and total momentum distributions. This is the first measurement of the ratio of pp to pn pairs as a function of pair total momentum, $p_{tot}$. For pair relative momenta between 0.3 and 0.5 GeV/c, the ratio is very small at low $p_{tot}$ and rises to approximately 0.5 at large $p_{tot}$. This shows the dominance of tensor over central correlations at this relative momentum.

Coupling between magnon and ligand-field excitations in magnetoelectric Tb3Fe5O12 garnet

The spectra of far-infrared transmission in Tb3Fe5O12 magnetoelectric single crystals have been studied in the range between 15 and 100 cm-1, in magnetic fields up to 10 T, and for temperatures between 5 and 150 K. We attribute some of the observed infrared-active excitations to electric-dipole transitions between ligand-field split states of Tb3+ ions. Anticrossing between the magnetic exchange excitation and the ligand-field transition occurs at the temperature between 60 and 80 K. The corresponding coupling energy for this interaction is 6 cm-1. Temperature-induced softening of the hybrid IR excitation correlates with the increase of the static dielectric constant. We discuss the possibility for hybrid excitations of magnons and ligand-field states and their possible connection to the magnetoelectric effect in Tb3Fe5O12.

Unveiling the ac Dynamics of Ferroelectric Domains by Investigating the Frequency Dependence of Hysteresis Loops

We investigated nonequilibrium domain wall dynamics under an ac field by measuring the hysteresis loops of epitaxial ferroelectric capacitors at various frequencies and temperatures. Polarization switching is induced mostly by thermally activated creep motion at lower frequencies, and by viscous flow motion at higher frequencies. The dynamic crossover between the creep and flow regimes unveils two frequency-dependent scaling regions of hysteresis loops. Based on these findings, we constructed a dynamic phase diagram for hysteretic ferroelectric domain dynamics in the presence of ac fields.

High Resolution X-ray Imaging of Supernova Remnant 1987A

We report observations of the remnant of Supernova 1987A with the High Resolution Camera (HRC) onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. A direct image from the HRC resolves the annular structure of the X-ray remnant, confirming the morphology previously inferred by deconvolution of lower resolution data from the Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer. Detailed spatial modeling shows that the a thin ring plus a thin shell gives statistically the best description of the overall remnant structure, and suggests an outer radius 0.96" +/- 0.05" +/- 0.03" for the X-ray-emitting region, with the two uncertainties corresponding to the statistical and systematic errors, respectively. This is very similar to the radius determined by a similar modeling technique for the radio shell at a comparable epoch, in contrast to previous claims that the remnant is 10-15% smaller at X-rays than in the radio band. The HRC observations put a flux limit of 0.010 cts/s (99% confidence level, 0.08-10 keV range) on any compact source at the remnant center. Assuming the same foreground neutral hydrogen column density as towards the remnant, this allows us to rule out an unobscured neutron star with surface temperature T^\infty > 2.5MK observed at infinity, a bright pulsar wind nebula or a magnetar.

Large 1/f noise of unipolar resistance switching and its percolating nature

We investigated the 1/f noise of Pt/NiO/Pt capacitors that show unipolar resistance switching. When they were switched from the low to high resistance states, the power spectral density of the voltage fluctuation was increased by approximately five orders of magnitude. At 100 K, the relative resistance fluctuation, SR/R2, in the low resistance state displayed a power law dependence on the resistance R with exponent w = 1.6. This behavior can be explained by percolation theory; however, at higher temperatures or near the switching voltage, SR/R2 becomes enhanced further. This large 1/f noise can be therefore an important problem in the development of resistance random access memory devices.

Magnetic excitations and optical transitions in the multiferroic spin-1/2 system LiCu$_2$O$_2$

Magnetic excitations in cycloidal magnet LiCu$_2$O$_2$ are explored using THz absorption spectroscopy in magnetic fields up to 12 T. Below the spin ordering temperature we observe eight optically active transitions in the spin system of LiCu$_2$O$_2$ in the energy range from 4 to 30 cm$^{-1}$. In magnetic field the number of modes increases and the electric polarization flop is seen as a change in magnetic field dependence of mode energies. The polarization dependence of two of the modes in zero magnetic field fits the selection rules for the cycloid tilted by $θ=41\pm1^{\circ}$ from the bc plane. For the remaining six modes electric and magnetic dipole approximations cannot explain the observed polarization dependence. We do not see the electromagnon in the explored energy range although there is evidence that it could exist below 4 cm$^{-1}$.

Nonlinear Dynamics of Domain Wall Propagation in Epitaxial Ferroelectric Thin Films

We investigated the ferroelectric domain wall propagation in epitaxial Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 thin films over a wide temperature range (3 - 300 K). We measured the domain wall velocity under various electric fields and found that the velocity data is strongly nonlinear with electric fields, especially at low temperature. We found that, as one of surface growth problems, our domain wall velocity data from ferroelectric epitaxial film could be classified into the creep, depinning, and flow regimes due to competition between disorder and elasticity. The measured values of velocity and dynamical exponents indicate that the ferroelectric domain walls in the epitaxial films are fractal and pinned by a disorder-induced local field.

Observation of a multiferroic critical end point

The study of abrupt increases in magnetization with magnetic field known as metamagnetic transitions has opened a rich vein of new physics in itinerant electron systems, including the discovery of quantum critical end points with a marked propensity to develop new kinds of order. However, the electric analogue of the metamagnetic critical end point, a "metaelectric" critical end point has not yet been realized. Multiferroic materials wherein magnetism and ferroelectricity are cross-coupled are ideal candidates for the exploration of this novel possibility using magnetic-field (\emph{H}) as a tuning parameter. Herein, we report the discovery of a magnetic-field-induced metaelectric transition in multiferroic BiMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$ in which the electric polarization (\emph{P}) switches polarity along with a concomitant Mn spin-flop transition at a critical magnetic field \emph{H}$_{\rm c}$. The simultaneous metaelectric and spin-flop transitions become sharper upon cooling, but remain a continuous crossover even down to 0.5 K. Near the \emph{P}=0 line realized at $μ_{0}$\emph{H}$_{\rm c}$$\approx$18 T below 20 K, the dielectric constant ($\varepsilon$) increases significantly over wide field- and temperature (\emph{T})-ranges. Furthermore, a characteristic power-law behavior is found in the \emph{P}(\emph{H}) and $\varepsilon$(\emph{H}) curves at \emph{T}=0.66 K. These findings indicate that a magnetic-field-induced metaelectric critical end point is realized in BiMn$_2$O$_5$ near zero temperature.

Infrared-active excitations related to Ho3+ ligand-field splitting at the commensurate-incommensurate magnetic phase transition in HoMn2O5

Linearly polarized spectra of far-infrared (IR) transmission in HoMn2O5 multiferroic single crystals have been studied in the frequency range between 8.5 and 105 cm-1 and for temperatures between 5 K and 300 K. Polarization of IR-active excitations depends on the crystallographic directions in HoMn2O5 and is sensitive to the magnetic phase transitions. We attribute some of the infrared-active excitations to electric-dipole transitions between ligand-field split states of Ho3+ ions. For light polarization along crystalline b-axis, the oscillator strength of electric dipoles at low frequencies (10.5, 13, and 18 cm-1) changes significantly at the commensurate-incommensurate antiferromagnetic phase transition at T3 = 19 K. This effect shows a strong correlation with the pronounced steps of the b-directional static dielectric function. We propose that the ligand field (LF) on Ho3+ connects the magnetism and dielectric properties of this compound through coupling with the Mn spin structure. We comment on the possibility for composite excitations of magnons and excited LF states.

Strong resistance nonlinearity and third harmonic generation in the unipolar resistance switching of NiO thin films

We investigated third harmonic generation in NiO thin films, which exhibit unipolar resistance switching behavior. We found that the low resistance states of the films were strongly nonlinear, with variations in the resistance R as large as 60%. This strong nonlinear behavior was most likely caused by Joule heating of conducting filaments inside the films. By carefully controlling the applied dc bias, we obtained several low resistance states, whose values of the third harmonic coefficient B3f were proportional to R2+w (with w = 2.07). This suggested that the resistance changes of the NiO films were accompanied by connectivity changes of the conducting filaments, as observed in classical percolating systems.

A Catalog of X-ray Point Sources from Two Megaseconds of Chandra Observations of the Galactic Center

We present a catalog of 9017 X-ray sources identified in Chandra observations of a 2 by 0.8 degree field around the Galactic center. We increase the number of known X-ray sources in the region by a factor of 2.5. The catalog incorporates all of the ACIS-I observations as of 2007 August, which total 2.25 Msec of exposure. At the distance to the Galactic center (8 kpc), we are sensitive to sources with luminosities >4e32 erg/s (0.5-8.0 keV; 90% confidence) over an area of one square degree, and up to an order of magnitude more sensitive in the deepest exposure (1.0 Msec) around Sgr A*. The positions of 60% of our sources are accurate to <1" (95% confidence), and 20% have positions accurate to <0.5". We search for variable sources, and find that 3% exhibit flux variations within an observation, 10% exhibit variations from observation-to-observation. We also find one source, CXOUGC J174622.7-285218, with a periodic 1745 s signal (1.4% chance probability), which is probably a magnetically-accreting cataclysmic variable. We compare the spatial distribution of X-ray sources to a model for the stellar distribution, and find 2.8 sigma evidence for excesses in the numbers of X-ray sources in the region of recent star formation encompassed by the Arches, Quintuplet, and Galactic center star clusters. These excess sources are also seen in the luminosity distribution of the X-ray sources, which is flatter near the Arches and Quintuplet than elsewhere in the field. These excess point sources, along with a similar longitudinal asymmetry in the distribution of diffuse iron emission that has been reported by other authors, probably have their origin in the young stars that are prominent at l~0.1 degree.

The incommensurate magnetic structure of YMn2O5: a stringent test of the multiferroic mechanism

We have determined the magnetic structure of the low-temperature incommensurate phase of multiferroic YMn2O5 using single-crystal neutron diffraction. By employing corepresentation analysis, we have ensured full compliance with both symmetry and physical constraints, so that the electrical polarization must lie along the b axis, as observed. The evolution of the spin components and propagation through the commensurate-incommensurate phase boundary points unambiguously at the exchange-striction mechanism as the primary driving force for ferroelectricity.

Multiferroicity in the spin-1/2 quantum matter of LiCu2O2

Multiferroicity in LiCu2O2 single crystals is studied using resonant soft x-ray magnetic scattering, hard x-ray diffraction, heat capacity, magnetic susceptibility, and electrical polarization. Two magnetic transitions are found at 24.6 K (T1) and 23.2 K (T2). Our data are consistent with a sinusoidal spin structure at T2<T<T1 and with a helicoidal spin structure at T<T2 giving rise to ferroelectricity. Surprisingly, above T2 the correlation lengths of the spin structures increase as the temperature increases with dramatic changes of ~42% along the c-axis. Our results demonstrate the interplay of the geometrical frustration and the electronic and magnetic polarizations.

Pressure-induced polarization reversal in multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$

The low-temperature ferroelectric polarization of multiferroic $YMn_2O_5$ is completely reversed at a critical pressure of 10 kbar and the phase transition from the incommensurate to the commensurate magnetic phase is induced by pressures above 14 kbar. The high-pressure data correlate with thermal expansion measurements indicating a significant lattice strain at the low-temperature transition into the incommensurate phase. The results support the exchange striction model for the ferroelectricity in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$ compounds and they show the importance of magnetic frustration as well as the spin-lattice coupling.

Discovery of Fast-Moving X-Ray--Emitting Ejecta Knots in the Oxygen-Rich Supernova Remnant Puppis A

We report on the discovery of fast-moving X-ray--emitting ejecta knots in the Galactic Oxygen-rich supernova remnant Puppis A from XMM-Newton observations. We find an X-ray knotty feature positionally coincident with an O-rich fast-moving optical filament with blue-shifted line emission located in the northeast of Puppis A. We extract spectra from northern and southern regions of the feature. Applying a one-component non-equilibrium ionization model for the two spectra, we find high metal abundances relative to the solar values in both spectra. This fact clearly shows that the feature originates from metal-rich ejecta. In addition, we find that line emission in the two regions is blue-shifted. The Doppler velocities derived in the two regions are different with each other, suggesting that the knotty feature consists of two knots that are close to each other along the line of sight. Since fast-moving O-rich optical knots/filaments are believed to be recoiled metal-rich ejecta, expelled to the opposite direction against the high-velocity central compact object, we propose that the ejecta knots disclosed here are also part of the recoiled material.

Epitaxial checkerboard arrangement of nanorods in ZnMnGaO4 films studied by x-ray diffraction

The intriguing nano-structural properties of a ZnMnGaO4 film epitaxially grown on MgO (001) substrate have been investigated using synchrotron radiation-based x-ray diffraction. The ZnMnGaO4 film consisted of a self-assembled checkerboard (CB) structure with perfectly aligned and regularly spaced vertical nanorods. The lattice parameters of the orthorhombic and rotated tetragonal phases of the CB structure were analyzed using H-K, H-L, and K-L cross sections of the reciprocal space maps measured around various symmetric and asymmetric reflections of the spinel structure. We demonstrate that the symmetry of atomic displacements at the phases boundaries provides the means for coherent coexistence of two domains types within the volume of the film.
