The commensurate phase of multiferroic HoMn2O5 studied by X-ray magnetic scattering

The commensurate phase of multiferroic HoMn2O5 was studied by X-ray magnetic scattering, both off resonance and in resonant conditions at the Ho-L3 edge. Below 40 K, magnetic ordering at the Ho sites is induced by the main Mn magnetic order parameter, and its temperature dependence is well accounted for by a simple Curie-Weiss susceptibility model. A lattice distortion of periodicity twice that of the magnetic order is also evidenced. Azimuthal scans confirm the model of the magnetic structure recently refined from neutron diffraction data for both Mn and Ho sites, indicating that the two sublattices interact via magnetic superexchange.

Electric field switching of antiferromagnetic domains in YMn2O5: a probe of the multiferroic mechanism

We employ neutron spherical polarimetry to determine the nature and population of the coexisting antiferromagnetic domains in multiferroic YMn2O5. By applying an electric field, we prove that reversing the electrical polarization results in the population inversion of two types of in-plane domains, related to each other by inversion. Our results are completely consistent with the exchange striction mechanism of ferroelectricity, and support a unified model where cycloidal ordering is induced by coupling to the main magnetic order parameter.

Infrared and X-Ray Evidence for Circumstellar Grain Destruction by the Blast Wave of Supernova 1987A

Multiwavelength observations of supernova remnant (SNR) 1987A show that its morphology and luminosity are rapidly changing at X-ray, optical, infrared, and radio wavelengths as the blast wave from the explosion expands into the circumstellar equatorial ring, produced by mass loss from the progenitor star. The observed infrared (IR) radiation arises from the interaction of dust grains that formed in mass outflow with the soft X-ray emitting plasma component of the shocked gas. Spitzer IRS spectra at 5 - 30 microns taken on day 6190 since the explosion show that the emission arises from ~ 1.1E-6 Msun of silicate grains radiating at a temperature of ~180+20-15 K. Subsequent observations on day 7137 show that the IR flux had increased by a factor of 2 while maintaining an almost identical spectral shape. The observed IR-to-X-ray flux ratio (IRX) is consistent with that of a dusty plasma with standard Large Magellanic Cloud dust abundances. IRX has decreased by a factor of ~ 2 between days 6190 and 7137, providing the first direct observation of the ongoing destruction of dust in an expanding SN blast wave on dynamic time scales. Detailed models consistent with the observed dust temperature, the ionization timescale of the soft X-ray emission component, and the evolution of IRX suggest that the radiating silicate grains are immersed in a 3.5E6 K plasma with a density of (0.3-1)E4 cm^{-3}, and have a size distribution that is confined to a narrow range of radii between 0.023 and 0.22 microns. Smaller grains may have been evaporated by the initial UV flash from the supernova.

Frustrated minority spins in GeNi2O4

Recently, two consecutive phase transitions were observed, upon cooling, in an antiferromagnetic spinel GeNi$_2$O$_4$ at $T_{N1}=12.1$ K and $T_{N2}=11.4$ K, respectively \cite{matsuno, crawford}. Using unpolarized and polarized elastic neutron scattering we show that the two transitions are due to the existence of frustrated minority spins in this compound. Upon cooling, at $T_{N1}$ the spins on the $<111>$ \kagome planes order ferromagnetically in the plane and antiferromagnetically between the planes (phase I), leaving the spins on the $<111>$ triangular planes that separate the \kagome planes frustrated and disordered. At the lower $T_{N2}$, the triangular spins also order in the $<111>$ plane (phase II). We also present a scenario involving exchange interactions that qualitatively explains the origin of the two purely magnetic phase transitions.

Pressure induced enhancement of ferroelectricity in multiferroic $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$($R$=Tb,Dy, and Ho)

Measurements of ferroelectric polarization and dielectric constant were done on $R$Mn$_2$O$_5$ ($R$=Tb, Dy, and Ho) with applied hydrostatic pressures of up to 18 kbar. At ambient pressure, distinctive anomalies were observed in the temperature profile of both physical properties at critical temperatures marking the onset of long range AFM order (T$_{N1}$), ferroelectricity (T$_{C1}$) as well as at temperatures when anomalous changes in the polarization, dielectric constant and spin wave commensurability have been previously reported. In particular, the step in the dielectric constant at low temperatures (T$_{C2}$), associated with both a drop in the ferroelectric polarization and an incommensurate magnetic structure, was shown to be suddenly quenched upon passing an $R$-dependent critical pressure. This was shown to correlate with the stabilization of the high ferroelectric polarization state which is coincident with the commensurate magnetic structure. The observation is suggested to be due to a pressure induced phase transition into a commensurate magnetic structure as exemplified by the pressure-temperature ($p$-$T$) phase diagrams constructed in this work. The $p$-$T$ phase diagrams are determined for all three compounds.

Non-resonant and Resonant X-ray Scattering Studies on Multiferroic TbMn2O5

Comprehensive x-ray scattering studies, including resonant scattering at Mn L-edge, Tb L- and M-edges, were performed on single crystals of TbMn2O5. X-ray intensities were observed at a forbidden Bragg position in the ferroelectric phases, in addition to the lattice and the magnetic modulation peaks. Temperature dependences of their intensities and the relation between the modulation wave vectors provide direct evidences of exchange striction induced ferroelectricity. Resonant x-ray scattering results demonstrate the presence of multiple magnetic orders by exhibiting their different temperature dependences. The commensurate-to-incommensurate phase transition around 24 K is attributed to discommensuration through phase slipping of the magnetic orders in spin frustrated geometries. We proposed that the low temperature incommensurate phase consists of the commensurate magnetic domains separated by anti-phase domain walls which reduce spontaneous polarizations abruptly at the transition.

Symmetry of Multiferroicity in a Frustrated Magnet TbMn$_2$O$_5$

Based on measurements of soft x-ray magnetic scattering and symmetry considerations, we demonstrate that the magnetoelectric effect in TbMn$_2$O$_5$ arises from an internal field determined by $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}} \times {\vec{S}_{-\vec{q}}}$ with $\vec{S}_{\vec{q}}$ being the magnetization at modulation vector $\vec{q}$, whereas the magneto-elastic effect in the exchange energy governs the response to external electric fields. Our results set fundamental symmetry constraints on the microscopic mechanism of multiferroicity in frustrated magnets.

Structure and Magnetism of the mono-layer hydrate Na0.3NiO2 0.7H2O

The mono-layer hydrate (Ni-MLH) Na0.3NiO2 0.7H2O was synthesized with an average Ni valence close to one in the bi-layer hydrate (Ni-BLH) Na0.3NiO2 1.3H2O. A weak unsaturated ferromagnetism and divergence of the magnetic susceptibilities of field and zero-field cooled samples of both Ni-MLH and Ni-BLH are observed. However, as a result of the increased 3-dimensional electronic and magnetic character present in Ni-MLH a frequency dependence of the AC magnetic susceptibility indicative of the spin glass-like behavior as seen in Ni-BLH was no longer observed in Ni-MLH.

Direct transition from a disordered to a multiferroic phase on a triangular lattice

Competing interactions and geometric frustration provide favourable conditions for exotic states of matter. Such competition often causes multiple phase transitions as a function of temperature and can lead to magnetic structures that break inversion symmetry, thereby inducing ferroelectricity [1-4]. Although this phenomenon is understood phenomenologically [3-4], it is of great interest to have a conceptually simpler system in which ferroelectricity appears coincident with a single magnetic phase transition. Here we report the first such direct transition from a paramagnetic and paraelectric phase to an incommensurate multiferroic in the triangular lattice antiferromagnet RbFe(MoO4)2 (RFMO). A magnetic field extinguishes the electric polarization when the symmetry of the magnetic order changes and ferroelectricity is only observed when the magnetic structure has chirality and breaks inversion symmetry. Multiferroic behaviour in RFMO provides a theoretically tractable example of ferroelectricity from competing spin interactions. A Landau expansion of symmetry-allowed terms in the free energy demonstrates that the chiral magnetic order of the triangular lattice antiferromagnet gives rise to a pseudoelectric field, whose temperature dependence agrees with that observed experimentally.

Daehee Formula Associated with the q-Extensions of Trigonometric Functions

In this paper we introduce a Daehee constant which is called q-extension of Napier constant, and consider Daehee formula associated with the qextensions of trigonometric functions. That is, we derive the q-extensions of sine and cosine functions from this Daehee formula. Finally, we give the q-calculus related to the q-extensions of sine and cosine functions.

Discovery of Variable Iron Fluorescence from Reflection Nebulae in the Galactic Center

Based on three years of deep observations of the Galactic center with the Chandra X-ray Observatory, we report the discovery of changes in the intensities and morphologies of two hard X-ray nebulosities. The nebulosities are dominated by fluorescent iron emission, and are coincident with molecular clouds. The morphological changes are manifest on parsec scales, which requires that these iron features are scattered X-rays from a 2 or 3-year-long outburst of a point source (either Sgr A* or an X-ray binary) with a luminosity of at least 1e37 erg/s. The variability precludes the hypotheses that these nebulae either are produced by keV electrons bombarding molecular clouds, or are iron-rich ejecta from supernovae. Moreover, the morphologies of the reflection nebulae implies that the dense regions of the clouds are filamentary, with widths of ~0.3 pc and lengths of ~2 pc.

Magnetoelastic Effects and Magnetic Phase Diagram of Multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$

The magnetoelastic coupling in multiferroic $DyMn_2O_5$ is investigated by magnetostriction measurements along the three crystallographic orientations. Strong lattice anomalies as a function of the magnetic field are detected at the low temperature magnetic and ferroelectric phase transitions. The sign and magnitude of the magnetostrictive coefficient as well as the lattice anomalies at the transitions are correlated with the Dy moment order and with the sharp changes of the dielectric constant and the ferroelectric polarization. With the magnetic field applied along the c-axis a new high-field phase has been detected the magnetic structure of which has yet to be explored.

Magnetic Excitation Spectrum of the Square Lattice S=1/2 Heisenberg Antiferromagnet K2V3O8

We have explored the magnetic excitation spectrum of the S=1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet, K2V3O8 using both triple-axis and time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The long-wavelength spin waves are consistent with the previously determined Hamiltonian for this material. A small energy gap of 72+/-9 micro-eV is observed at the antiferromagnetic zone center and the near-neighbor exchange constant is determined to be 1.08+/-0.03 meV. A finite ferromagnetic interplanar coupling is observed along the crystallographic c-axis with a magnitude of Jc=-0.0036+/-0.006 meV. However, upon approaching the zone boundary, the observed excitation spectrum deviates significantly from the expectation of linear spin wave theory resulting in split modes at the (pi/2,pi/2) zone boundary point. The effects of magnon-phonon interaction, orbital degrees of freedom, multimagnon scattering, and dilution/site randomness are considered in the context of the mode splitting. Unfortunately, no fully satisfactory explanation of this phenomenon is found and further theoretical and experimental work is needed.

Electromagnons in multiferroic YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5

Based on temperature dependent far infrared transmission spectra of YMn2O5 and TbMn2O5 single crystals, we report the observation of electric dipole-active magnetic excitations, or electromagnons, in these multiferroics. Electromagnons are found to be directly responsible for the step-like anomaly of the static dielectric constant at the commensurate--incommensurate magnetic transition and are the origin of the colossal magneto-dielectric effect reported in these multiferroics.

IR Phonon signatures of multiferroicity in TbMn$_{2}$O$_{5}$

The infrared (IR) active phonons in multiferroic TbMn$_2$O$_5$ are studied as a function of temperature. Most of the symmetry allowed IR modes polarized along the \textit{a} and \textit{b} crystal axes are observed and the behavior of several \textit{b} polarized phonons is correlated with the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions. A high frequency \textit{b} polarized phonon only Raman allowed in the paraelectric phase becomes IR active at the ferroelectric transition. The IR strength of this mode is proportional to the square of the ferroelectric order parameter and gives a sensitive measure of the symmetry lowering lattice distortions in the ferroelectric phase.

Erratum: Dynamics and scaling in a quantum spin chain material with bond randomness

Follow-up neutron measurements, performed on a sample much larger than the one used in the original study, show that in the energy range 0.5-45 meV the magnetic excitations in BaCu2SiGeO7 are indistinguishable from those in conventional (disorder-free) quantum S=1/2 chains. Scrutinizing the previous data, we found that the analysis was affected by a poorly identified structured background and an additional technical mistake in the data reduction.

Structural Anomalies at the Magnetic and Ferroelectric Transitions in $RMn_2O_5$ (R=Tb, Dy, Ho)

Strong anomalies of the thermal expansion coefficients at the magnetic and ferroelectric transitions have been detected in multiferroic $RMn_2O_5$. Their correlation with anomalies of the specific heat and the dielectric constant is discussed. The results provide evidence for the magnetic origin of the ferroelectricity mediated by strong spin-lattice coupling in the compounds. Neutron scattering data for $HoMn_2O_5$ indicate a spin reorientation at the two low-temperature phase transitions.

Relating supercooling and glass-like arrest of kinetics for phase separated systems: studies on doped CeFe$_2$ and (La,Pr,Ca)MnO$_3$

Coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases over a range of temperature as well as magnetic field have been reported in many materials of current interest, showing disorder-broadened 1st order transitions. Anomalous history effects observed in magnetization and resistivity are being explained invoking the concepts of kinetic arrest akin to glass transitions. From magnetization measurements traversing novel paths in field-temperature space, we obtain the intriguing result that the regions of the sample which can be supercooled to lower temperatures undergo kinetic-arrest at higher temperatures, and vice versa. Our results are for two diverse systems viz. the inter-metallic doped CeFe$_2$ which has an antiferromagnetic ground state, and the oxide La-Pr-Ca-Mn-O which has a ferromagnetic ground state, indicating the possible universality of this effect of disorder on the widely encountered phenomenon of glass-like arrest of kinetics.
