Neutron Inelastic Scattering Processes as Background for Double-Beta Decay Experiments

We investigate several Pb$(n,n'γ$) and Ge$(n,n'γ$) reactions. We measure $γ$-ray production from Pb$(n,n'γ$) reactions that can be a significant background for double-beta decay experiments which use lead as a massive inner shield. Particularly worrisome for Ge-based double-beta decay experiments are the 2041-keV and 3062-keV $γ$ rays produced via Pb$(n,n'γ$). The former is very close to the ^{76}Ge double-beta decay endpoint energy and the latter has a double escape peak energy near the endpoint. Excitation $γ$-ray lines from Ge$(n,n'γ$) reactions are also observed. We consider the contribution of such backgrounds and their impact on the sensitivity of next-generation searches for neutrinoless double-beta decay using enriched germanium detectors.

Atomic-charge distribution in glasses by terahertz spectroscopy

It is demonstrated that the width of the uncorrelated atomic-charge distribution in glasses can be extracted from the frequency dependence of the coupling coefficient for the far-infrared absorption measured experimentally by the time-domain terahertz spectroscopy technique. This value for As2S3 glass is found to be 0.12 (e). A density functional theory-based tight-binding molecular dynamics model of As2S3 glass qualitatively supports these findings.

An array of low-background $^3$He proportional counters for the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory

An array of Neutral-Current Detectors (NCDs) has been built in order to make a unique measurement of the total active flux of solar neutrinos in the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO). Data in the third phase of the SNO experiment were collected between November 2004 and November 2006, after the NCD array was added to improve the neutral-current sensitivity of the SNO detector. This array consisted of 36 strings of proportional counters filled with a mixture of $^3$He and CF$_4$ gas capable of detecting the neutrons liberated by the neutrino-deuteron neutral current reaction in the D$_2$O, and four strings filled with a mixture of $^4$He and CF$_4$ gas for background measurements. The proportional counter diameter is 5 cm. The total deployed array length was 398 m. The SNO NCD array is the lowest-radioactivity large array of proportional counters ever produced. This article describes the design, construction, deployment, and characterization of the NCD array, discusses the electronics and data acquisition system, and considers event signatures and backgrounds.

Multiple-Isotope Comparison for Determining Neutrinoless Double-Beta Decay Mechanisms

We present a technique for estimating the number of future neutrinoless double-beta decay results using several distinct nuclei to optimize the physics reach of upcoming experiments. We use presently available matrix element calculations and simulated sets of predicted neutrinoless double-beta decay measured rates in multiple isotopes to estimate the required precision and number of experiments to discern the underlying physics governing the mechanism of the process. Our results indicate that 3 (4) experimental results with total uncertainty (statistical, systematic, theoretical) of less than ~20% (~40%) can elucidate the underlying physics. If the theoretical (i.e. matrix element) uncertainty contribution is below ~18%, then 3-4 experimental results of ~20% precision (statistical and systematic) are required. These uncertainty goals can be taken as guidance for the upcoming theoretical and experimental programs.

Temporal and dimensional effects in evolutionary graph theory

The spread in time of a mutation through a population is studied analytically and computationally in fully-connected networks and on spatial lattices. The time, t_*, for a favourable mutation to dominate scales with population size N as N^{(D+1)/D} in D-dimensional hypercubic lattices and as N ln N in fully-connected graphs. It is shown that the surface of the interface between mutants and non-mutants is crucial in predicting the dynamics of the system. Network topology has a significant effect on the equilibrium fitness of a simple population model incorporating multiple mutations and sexual reproduction. Includes supplementary information.

Vibrational behaviour of a realistic amorphous-silicon model

The vibrational properties of a high-quality realistic model of amorphous silicon are examined. The longitudinal and transverse dynamical structure factors are calculated, and fitted to a damped harmonic oscillator (DHO) function. The width $Γ$ of the best-fit DHO to the longitudinal dynamical structure factor scales approximately as $k^{2}$ for wavevectors $k\lesssim0.55\textrmÅ^{-1}$, which is above the Ioffe-Regel crossover frequency separating the propagating and diffusing regimes, occurring at $k=0.38\pm0.03\textrmÅ^{-1}$. Using the DHO function as a fitting function for the transverse dynamical structure factor (without theoretical justification), gives a dependence of $Γ\propto k^α$ with $α\sim2.5$ for wavevectors $k\lesssim0.7\textrmÅ^{-1}$. There was no evidence for $Γ\propto k^{4}$ behaviour for either polarization.

Multi-layer scintillation detector for the MOON double beta decay experiment: Scintillation photon responses studied by a prototype detector MOON-1

An ensemble of multi-layer scintillators is discussed as an option of the high-sensitivity detector Mo Observatory Of Neutrinos (MOON) for spectroscopic measurements of neutrino-less double beta decays. A prototype detector MOON-1, which consists of 6 layer plastic-scintillator plates, was built to study the sensitivity of the MOON-type detector. The scintillation photon collection and the energy resolution, which are key elements for the high-sensitivity experiments, are found to be 1835+/-30 photo-electrons for 976 keV electrons and sigma = 2.9+/-0.1% (dE/E = 6.8+/-0.3 % in FWHM) at the Qbb ~ 3 MeV region, respectively. The multi-layer plastic-scintillator structure with good energy resolution as well as good background suppression of beta-gamma rays is crucial for the MOON-type detector to achieve the inverted hierarchy neutrino mass sensitivity.

The BNO-LNGS joint measurement of the solar neutrino capture rate in 71Ga

We describe a cooperative measurement of the capture rate of solar neutrinos by the reaction 71Ga(ν_e,e^-)71Ge. Extractions were made from a portion of the gallium target in the Russian-American Gallium Experiment SAGE and the extraction samples were transported to the Gran Sasso laboratory for synthesis and counting at the Gallium Neutrino Observatory GNO. Six extractions of this type were made and the resultant solar neutrino capture rate was 64 ^{+24}_{-22} SNU, which agrees well with the overall result of the gallium experiments. The major purpose of this experiment was to make it possible for SAGE to continue their regular schedule of monthly solar neutrino extractions without interruption while a separate experiment was underway to measure the response of 71Ga to neutrinos from an 37Ar source. As side benefits, this experiment proved the feasibility of long-distance sample transport in ultralow background radiochemical experiments and familiarized each group with the methods and techniques of the other.

Universal Features of Terahertz Absorption in Disordered Materials

Using an analytical theory, experimental terahertz time-domain spectroscopy data and numerical evidence, we demonstrate that the frequency dependence of the absorption coupling coefficient between far-infrared photons and atomic vibrations in disordered materials has the universal functional form, C(omega) = A + B*omega^2, where the material-specific constants A and B are related to the distributions of fluctuating charges obeying global and local charge neutrality, respectively.

Measurement of the response of a Ga solar neutrino experiment to neutrinos from an 37Ar source

An intense source of 37Ar was produced by the (n,alpha) reaction on 40Ca by irradiating 330 kg of calcium oxide in the fast neutron breeder reactor at Zarechny, Russia. The 37Ar was released from the solid target by dissolution in acid, collected from this solution, purified, sealed into a small source, and brought to the Baksan Neutrino Observatory where it was used to irradiate 13 tonnes of gallium metal in the Russian-American gallium solar neutrino experiment SAGE. Ten exposures of the gallium to the source, whose initial strength was 409 +/- 2 kCi, were carried out during the period April to September 2004. The 71Ge produced by the reaction 71Ga(nu_e,e^-)71Ge was extracted, purified, and counted. The measured production rate was 11.0 ^+1.0 _-0.9 (stat) +/- 0.6 (syst) atoms of 71Ge/d, which is 0.79 ^+0.09_-0.10 of the theoretically calculated production rate. When all neutrino source experiments with gallium are considered together, there is an indication the theoretical cross section has been overestimated.

Pulse shape analysis in segmented detectors as a technique for background reduction in Ge double-beta decay experiments

The need to understand and reject backgrounds in Ge-diode detector double-beta decay experiments has given rise to the development of pulse shape analysis in such detectors to discern single-site energy deposits from multiple-site deposits. Here, we extend this analysis to segmented Ge detectors to study the effectiveness of combining segmentation with pulse shape analysis to identify the multiplicity of the energy deposits.

Influence of copper on the electronic properties of amorphous chalcogenides

We have studied the influence of alloying copper with amorphous arsenic sulfide on the electronic properties of this material. In our computer-generated models, copper is found in two-fold near-linear and four-fold square-planar configurations, which apparently correspond to Cu(I) and Cu(II) oxidation states. The number of overcoordinated atoms, both arsenic and sulfur, grows with increasing concentration of copper. Overcoordinated sulfur is found in trigonal planar configuration, and overcoordinated (four-fold) arsenic is in tetrahedral configuration. Addition of copper suppresses the localization of lone-pair electrons on chalcogen atoms, and localized states at the top of the valence band are due to Cu 3d orbitals. Evidently, these additional Cu states, which are positioned at the same energies as the states due to ([As4]-)-([S_3]+) pairs, are responsible for masking photodarkening in Cu chalcogenides.

Statistical properties of the critical eigenstates in power-law random banded matrices across the band

The level-spacing distribution in the tails of the eigenvalue bands of the power-law random banded matrix (PRBM) ensemble have been investigated numerically. The change of level-spacing statistics across the band is examined for different coupling strengths and compared to the density of states for the different systems. It is confirmed that, by varying the eigenvalue region, the same level-spacing statistics can be reached as by varying the coupling strength.

Modelling the atomic structure of very high-density amorphous ice

The structure of very high-density amorphous (VHDA) ice has been modelled by positionally disordering three crystalline phases, namely ice IV, VI and XII. These phases were chosen because only they are stable or metastable in the region of the ice phase diagram where VHDA ice is formed, and their densities are comparable to that of VHDA ice. An excellent fit to the medium range of the experimentally observed pair-correlation function g(r) of VHDA ice was obtained by introducing disorder into the positions of the H2O molecules, as well as small amounts of molecular rotational disorder, disorder in the O--H bond lengths and disorder in the H--O--H bond angles. The low-k behaviour of the experimental structure factor, S(k), is also very well reproduced by this disordered-crystal model. The fraction of each phase present in the best-fit disordered model is very close to that observed in the probable crystallization products of VHDA ice. In particular, only negligible amounts of ice IV are predicted, in accordance with experimental observation.

A new type of charged defect in amorphous chalcogenides

We report on density-functional-based tight-binding (DFTB) simulations of a series of amorphous arsenic sulfide models. In addition to the charged coordination defects previously proposed to exist in chalcogenide glasses, a novel defect pair, [As4]--[S3]+, consisting of a four-fold coordinated arsenic site in a seesaw configuration and a three-fold coordinated sulfur site in a planar trigonal configuration, was found in several models. The valence-alternation pairs S3+-S1- are converted into [As4]--[S3]+ pairs under HOMO-to-LUMO electronic excitation. This structural transformation is accompanied by a decrease in the size of the HOMO-LUMO band gap, which suggests that such transformations could contribute to photo-darkening in these materials.

Atomic vibrations in disordered systems: Comparison of disordered diamond lattices and a realistic amorphous silicon model

Force-constant and positional disorder have been introduced into diamond lattice models in an attempt to mimic the vibrational properties of a realistic amorphous silicon model. Neither type of disorder is sufficient on its own to mimic the realistic model. By comparing the spectral densities of these models, it is shown that a combination of both disorders is a better representation, but still not completely satisfactory. Topological disorder in these models was investigated by renumbering the atoms and examining the dynamical matrix graphically. The dynamical matrix of the realistic model is similar to that of a positionally-disordered lattice model, implying that the short-range order in both systems is similar.

Structural characteristics of positionally-disordered lattices: relation to the first sharp diffraction peak in glasses

Positional disorder has been introduced into the atomic structure of certain crystalline lattices, and the orientationally-averaged structure factor S(k) and pair-correlation function g(r) of these disordered lattices have been studied. Analytical expressions for S(k) and g(r) for Gaussian positional disorder in 2D and 3D are confirmed with precise numerical simulations. These analytic results also have a bearing on the unsolved Gauss circle problem in mathematics. As the positional disorder increases, high-k peaks in S(k) are destroyed first, eventually leaving a single peak, that with the lowest-k value. The pair-correlation function for lattices with such high levels of positional disorder exhibits damped oscillations, with a period equal to the separation between the furthest-separated (lowest-k) lattice planes. The last surviving peak in S(k) is, for example for silicon and silica, at a wavevector nearly identical to that of the experimentally-observed first sharp diffraction peak (FSDP) in the amorphous phases of those materials. Thus, for these amorphous materials at least, the FSDP can be regarded as arising from scattering from atomic configurations equivalent to the single family of positionally-disordered local Bragg planes having the furthest separation.

Double Beta Decay

We review recent developments in double-beta decay, focusing on what can be learned about the three light neutrinos in future experiments. We examine the effects of uncertainties in already measured neutrino parameters and in calculated nuclear matrix elements on the interpretation of upcoming double-beta decay measurements. We then review a number of proposed experiments.
