Hopping induced ground-state magnetism in 6H perovskite iridates

Investigation of elementary excitations has advanced our understanding of many-body physics governing most physical properties of matter. Recently spin-orbit excitons have drawn much attention, whose condensates near phase transitions exhibit Higgs mode oscillations, a long-sought physical phenomenon [Nat. Phys. {\bf 13}, 633 (2017)]. These critical transition points resulting from competing spin-orbit coupling (SOC), local crystalline symmetry and exchange interactions, are not obvious in Iridium based materials, where SOC prevails in general. Here, we present results of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering on a spin-orbital liquid Ba$_3$ZnIr$_2$O$_9$ and three other 6H-hexagonal perovskite iridates which show magnetism, contrary to non-magnetic singlet ground state expected due to strong SOC. Our results show that substantial hopping between closely placed Ir$^{5+}$ ions within Ir$_2$O$_9$ dimers in these 6H-iridates, modifies spin-orbit coupled states and reduces spin-orbit excitation energies. Here, we are forced to use at least a two-site model, to match the excitation spectrum going in line with the strong intra-dimer hopping. Apart from SOC, low energy physics of iridates is thus critically dependent on hopping, and may not be ignored even for systems having moderate hopping, where the excitation spectra can be explained using an atomic model. SOC which is generally found to be 0.4-0.5~eV in iridates, is scaled in effect down to $\sim$0.26~eV for the 6H-systems, sustaining the hope to achieve quantum criticality by tuning Ir-Ir separation.

One-dimensional quasicrystals with power-law hopping

One-dimensional quasi-periodic systems with power-law hopping, $1/r^a$, differ from both the standard Aubry-Azbel-Harper (AAH) model and from power-law systems with uncorrelated disorder. Whereas in the AAH model all single-particle states undergo a transition from ergodic to localized at a critical quasi-disorder strength, short-range power-law hops with $a>1$ can result in mobility edges. Interestingly, there is no localization for long-range hops with $a\leq 1$, in contrast to the case of uncorrelated disorder. Systems with long-range hops are rather characterized by ergodic-to-multifractal edges and a phase transition from ergodic to multifractal (extended but non ergodic) states. We show that both mobility and ergodic-to-multifractal edges may be clearly revealed in experiments on expansion dynamics.

Modelling the effects of awareness-based interventions to control the mosaic disease of Jatropha curcas

Plant diseases are responsible for substantial and sometimes devastating economic and societal costs and thus are a major limiting factor for stable and sustainable agricultural production. Diseases of crops are particular crippling in developing countries that are heavily dependent on agriculture for food security and income. Various techniques have been developed to reduce the negative impact of plant diseases and eliminate the associated parasites, but the success of these approaches strongly depends on population awareness and the degree of engagement with disease control and prevention programs. In this paper we derive and analyse a mathematical model of mosaic disease of {\it Jatropha curcas}, an important biofuel plant, with particular emphasis on the effects of interventions in the form of nutrients and insecticides, whose use depends on the level of population awareness. Two contributions to disease awareness are considered in the model: global awareness campaigns, and awareness from observing infected plants. All steady states of the model are found, and their stability is analysed in terms of system parameters. We identify parameter regions associated with eradication of disease, stable endemic infection, and periodic oscillations in the level of infection. Analytical results are supported by numerical simulations that illustrate the behaviour of the model in different dynamical regimes. Implications of theoretical results for practical implementation of disease control are discussed.

Determination of the mass and energy of primary cosmic rays above 100 TeV

This analysis aims to determine the mass composition and energy of cosmic rays at energies above 100 TeV based on the lateral distribution of extensive air showers. Here, we propose quite a few air shower observables for reconstructing the mass and energy of the primary particles. The present reconstruction uses a detailed Monte Carlo simulation for cosmic ray induced air showers in KASCADE and NBU types surface arrays of particle detectors. Some of the observables obtained from this analysis of simulated data are used to infer the nature of the primary particles from a comparison with KASCADE and/or NBU data. It is expected that the determination of primary energy of a cosmic-ray shower may deliver a better accuracy compared to standalone analysis using shower size or S600 or S500 or $N_{\rm {pe}}$ etc, owing to strong fluctuations in the EAS development. Moreover, the present study might be useful to discriminate between hadronic cosmic rays and primary gamma rays, and to measure the cosmic ray all-particle energy spectrum.

Twisting/Swirling Motions During a Prominence Eruption as seen from SDO/AIA

A quiescent prominence was observed at north-west limb of the Sun using different channels of Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA) onboard Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO). We report and analyse twisting/swirling motions during and after the prominence eruption. We segregate the observed rotational motions into small and large scale. Small scale rotational motions manifest in the barbs of the prominence while the large scale rotation manifests as the roll motion during the prominence eruption. We noticed that both footpoints of the prominence rotate in the counter-clockwise direction. We propose that similar sense of rotation in both footpoints leads to prominence eruption. The prominence erupted asymmetrically near the southern footpoint which may be due to uneven mass distribution and location of the cavity near southern footpoint. Furthermore, we study the swirling motion of the plasma along different circular paths in the cavity of the prominence after the prominence eruption. The rotational velocities of the plasma moving along different circular paths are estimated to be $\sim$ 9-40 km s$^{-1}$. These swirling motions can be explained in terms of twisted magnetic field lines in the prominence cavity. Finally, we observe the twist built up in the prominence, being carried away by the coronal mass ejection (CME) as seen in the Large Angle Spectrometric Coronagraph (LASCO) onboard Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO).

Signature of Chaos and Delocalization in a Periodically Driven Many Body System : An Out-of-Time-Order Correlation Study

We study out-of-time-order correlation (OTOC) for one-dimensional periodically driven hardcore bosons in the presence of Aubry-André (AA) potential and show that both the spectral properties and the saturation values of OTOC in the steady state of these driven systems provide a clear distinction between the localized and delocalized phases of these models. Our results, obtained via exact numerical diagonalization of these boson chains, thus indicate that OTOC can provide a signature of drive induced delocalization even for systems which do not have a well defined semiclassical (and/or large N) limit. We demonstrate the presence of such signature by analyzing two different drive protocols for hardcore bosons chains leading to distinct physical phenomena and discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Drive Induced Delocalization in Aubry-André Model

Motivated by the recent experiment by Bordia et al [Nat. Phys. 13, 460 (2017)], we study single particle delocalization phenomena of Aubry-André (AA) model subjected to periodic drives. In two distinct cases we construct an equivalent classical description to illustrate that the drive induced delocalization phenomena stems from an instability and onset of chaos in the underlying dynamics. In the first case we analyze the delocalization and the thermalization in a time modulated AA potential with respect to driving frequency and demonstrate that there exists a threshold value of the amplitude of the drive. In the next example, we show that the periodic modulation of the hopping amplitude leads to an unusual effect on delocalization with a non-monotonic dependence on the driving frequency. Within a window of such driving frequency a delocalized Floquet band with mobility edge appears, exhibiting multifractality in the spectrum as well as in the Floquet eigenfunctions. Finally, we explore the effect of interaction and discuss how the results of the present analysis can be tested experimentally.

Quantum Signature of Chaos and Thermalization in Kicked Dicke Model

We study the quantum dynamics of the kicked Dicke model(KDM) in terms of the Floquet operator and analyze the connection between the chaos and thermalization in this context. The Hamiltonian map is constructed by taking the classical limit of the Heisenberg equation of motion suitably to study the corresponding phase space dynamics which shows a crossover from regular to chaotic motion by tuning the kicking strength. The fixed point analysis and calculation of the Lyapunov exponent(LE) provides us a complete picture of the onset of chaos in phase space dynamics. We carry out the spectral analysis of the Floquet operator which include the calculation of quasienergy spacing distribution, structural entropy and show the correspondence to the random matrix theory in the chaotic regime. Finally, we analyze the thermodynamics and statistical properties of the bosonic sector as well as the spin sector and discuss how such periodically kicked system relaxes to a thermalized state in accordance with the laws of statistical mechanics. We introduce the notion of an effective temperature and show that a microcanonical picture is emerging out in the thermodynamic limit indicating the thermalization occurring in such system.

Phases, collective modes, and non-equilibrium dynamics of dissipative Rydberg atoms

We use a density matrix formalism to study the equilibrium phases and non-equilibrium dynamics of a system of dissipative Rydberg atoms in an optical lattice within mean-field theory. We provide equations for the fixed points of the density matrix evolution for atoms with infinite on-site repulsion and analyze these equations to obtain their Mott insulator- superfluid (MI-SF) phase boundary. A stability analysis around these fixed points provides us with the excitation spectrum of the atoms both in the MI and SF phases. We study the nature of the MI-SF critical point in the presence of finite dissipation of Rydberg excitations, discuss the fate of the superfluidity of the atoms in the presence of such dissipation in the weak-coupling limit using a coherent state representation of the density matrix, and extend our analysis to Rydberg atoms with finite on-site interaction via numerical solution of the density matrix equations. Finally, we vary the boson (atom) hopping parameter $J$ and the dissipation parameter $Γ$ according to a linear ramp protocol. We study the evolution of entropy of the system following such a ramp and show that the deviation of the entropy from its steady state value for the latter protocol exhibits power-law behavior as a function of the ramp time. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Transverse Wobbling in $^{135}$Pr

A pair of transverse wobbling bands has been observed in the nucleus $^{135}$Pr. The wobbling is characterized by $ΔI$ =1, E2 transitions between the bands, and a decrease in the wobbling energy confirms its transverse nature. Additionally, a transition from transverse wobbling to a three-quasiparticle band comprised of strong magnetic dipole transitions is observed. These observations conform well to results from calculations with the Tilted Axis Cranking (TAC) model and the Quasiparticle Triaxial Rotor (QTR) Model.

Some simple models for quark stars

We find two new classes of exact solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The solutions are obtained by considering charged anisotropic matter with a linear equation of state consistent with quark stars. The field equations are integrated by specifying forms for the measure of anisotropy and a gravitational potential which are physically reasonable. The solutions found generalize the Mark-Harko model and the Komathiraj-Maharaj model. A graphical analysis indicates that the matter variables are well behaved.

Charged compact objects in the linear regime

Astrophysical compact stars provide a natural laboratory for testing theoretical models which are otherwise difficult to prove from an experimental setup. In our present work we analyse an exact solution to the Einstein-Maxwell system for a charged anisotropic compact body in the linear regime. The charged parameter may be set to zero which gives us the case of neutral solutions. We have tuned the model parameters for the uncharged case so as to match with recent updated mass-radius estimates for five different compact objects. Then we make a systematic study of the effect of charge for the different parameter set that fits the observed stars. The effect of charge is clearly illustrated in the increase of mass. We show that the physical quantities for the objects PSR J1614-2230, PSR J1903+327, Vela X-1, SMC X-1, Cen X-3 are well behaved.

Linear Polarization Measurements for High-Spin States in 146Gd

A γ-ray linear polarization measurement has been performed to directly determine the parities for the levels in 146Gd nucleus. High-spin states in this nucleus were populated in a reaction 115In + 34S at 140 MeV incident energy. Linearly polarized γ - rays emitted from oriented states were measured using a Compton polarimeter consisting of an array of 8 Compton-suppressed Clover detectors. Unambiguous assignments of the spin and parity have been made for most of the observed levels and changes made in the previously reported spin-parity assignments for a few levels. Shell model calculations performed with judicious truncation over the π(gdsh) valence space interpret the structure of only the low-lying levels up to Jπ = 19+ and 9-. N = 82 neutron-core breaking is found to be essential for high spin states with excitation energies Ex > 7 MeV.

Superdeformation and alpha - cluster structure in 35Cl

A superdeformed (SD) band has been identified in a non - alpha - conjugate nucleus 35Cl. It crosses the negative parity ground band above 11/2- and becomes the yrast at 15/2-. Lifetimes of all relevant states have been measured to follow the evolution of collectivity. Enhanced B(E2), B(E1) values as well as energetics provide evidences for superdeformation and existence of parity doublet cluster structure in an odd-A nucleus for the first time in A = 40 region. Large scale shell model calculations assign (sd)16(pf)3 as the origin of these states. Calculated spectroscopic factors correlate the SD states in 35Cl to those in 36Ar.

A hybrid metal/semiconductor electron pump for quantum metrology

Electron pumps capable of delivering a current higher than 100pA with sufficient accuracy are likely to become the direct mise en pratique of the possible new quantum definition of the ampere. Furthermore, they are essential for closing the quantum metrological triangle experiment which tests for possible corrections to the quantum relations linking e and h, the electron charge and the Planck constant, to voltage, resistance and current. We present here single-island hybrid metal/semiconductor transistor pumps which combine the simplicity and efficiency of Coulomb blockade in metals with the unsurpassed performances of silicon switches. Robust and simple pumping at 650MHz and 0.5K is demonstrated. The pumped current obtained over a voltage bias range of 1.4mV corresponds to a relative deviation of 5e-4 from the calculated value, well within the 1.5e-3 uncertainty of the measurement setup. Multi-charge pumping can be performed. The simple design fully integrated in an industrial CMOS process makes it an ideal candidate for national measurement institutes to realize and share a future quantum ampere.

High-pressure structural phase transitions in CuWO4

We study the effects of pressure on the structural, vibrational, and magnetic behavior of cuproscheelite. We performed powder x-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy experiments up to 27 GPa as well as ab initio total-energy and lattice-dynamics calculations. Experiments provide evidence that a structural phase transition takes place at 10 GPa from the low-pressure triclinic phase (P-1) to a monoclinic wolframite-type structure (P2/c). Calculations confirmed this finding and indicate that the phase transformation involves a change in the magnetic order. In addition, the equation of state for the triclinic phase is determined: V0 = 132.8(2) A3, B0 = 139 (6) GPa and = 4. Furthermore, experiments under different stress conditions show that non-hydrostatic stresses induce a second phase transition at 17 GPa and reduce the compressibility of CuWO4, B0 = 171(6) GPa. The pressure dependence of all Raman modes of the triclinic and high-pressure phases is also reported and discussed.

Study of nuclei in the vicinity of the "Island of Inversion" through fusion-evaporation reaction

We report the first observation of high-spin states in nuclei in the vicinity of the "island of inversion", populated via the 18O+18O fusion reaction at an incident beam energy of 34 MeV. The fusion reaction mechanism circumvents the limitations of non-equilibrated reactions used to populate these nuclei. Detailed spin-parity measurements in these difficult to populate nuclei have been possible from the observed coincidence anisotropy and the linear polarization measurements. The spectroscopy of 33,34P and 33S is presented in detail along with the results of calculations within the shell model framework.

Level Structure of 103Ag at high spins

High spin states in $^{103}$Ag were investigated with the Gammasphere array, using the $^{72}$Ge($^{35}$Cl,$2p2n$)$^{103}$Ag reaction at an incident beam energy of 135 MeV. A $ΔJ$=1 sequence with predominantly magnetic transitions and two nearly-degenerate $ΔJ=1$ doublet bands have been observed. The dipole band shows a decreasing trend in the $B(M1)$ strength as function of spin, a well established feature of magnetic bands. The nearly-degenerate band structures satisfy the three experimental signatures of chirality in the nuclei; however microscopic calculations are indicative of a magnetic phenomenon
