High-spin structure and Band Termination in $^{103}$Cd

Excited states of the neutron deficient $^{103}$Cd nucleus have been investigated via the $^{72}$Ge($^{35}$Cl, p3n) reaction at beam energy of 135 MeV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. Gamma rays depopulating the excited states were detected using the Gammasphere spectrometer with high-fold $γ$-ray coincidences. A quadrupole $γ$-ray coincidence analysis ($γ^{4}$) has been used to extend the known level scheme. The positive parity levels have been established up to $J = 35/2\hbar$ and $E_{x} = 7.071$ MeV. In addition to the observation of highly-fragmented level scheme belonging to the positive-parity sequences at E$_{x}\sim$ 5 MeV, the termination of a negative-parity sequence connected by $E2$ transitions has been established at $J = 47/2 \hbar$ and $E_{x} = 11.877$ MeV. The experimental results corresponding to both the positive- and negative-parity sequences have been theoretically interpreted in the framework of the core particle coupling model. Evidence is presented for a shape change from collective prolate to non-collective oblate above the $J^π = 39/2^{-}$ (8011 keV) level and for a smooth termination of the negative-parity band.

Parton Distributions in Impact Parameter Space

Fourier transform of the generalized parton distributions (GPDs) at zero skewness with respect to the transverse momentum transfer gives the distribution of partons in the impact parameter space. We investigate the GPDs as well as the impact parameter dependent parton distributions (ipdpdfs) by expressing them in terms of overlaps of light front wave functions (LFWFs) and present a comparative study using three different model LFWFs.

Optical Properties of Nanocrystalline Y2O3:Eu3+

Optical properties of nanocrystalline red-emitting phosphor, Europium doped Yttria (Y$_{2}$O$_{3}$:Eu$^{3+})$, of average particle size 15 nm are investigated. The intensity of the strongest emission line at 612 nm is found to be highest in the nanocrystalline sample with 4 at. wt. % of Europium. The narrow electronic emission spectrum suggests a crystalline surrounding in this nanomaterial. We have estimated the strength of the crystal field parameter at the dopant site, which plays a crucial role in determining the appearance of the intense emission line. The equilibrium temperature of this system has also been calculated from the intensity ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering. Though known for the bulk samples, our approach and consequent results on the crystalline nanomaterial of Y$_{2}$O$_{3}$:Eu$^{3+}$ provide a unique report, which, we believe, can be of considerable significance in nanotechnology.the intensity ratio of Stokes and anti-Stokes Raman scattering. Entrance channel dependence in compound nuclear reactions with loosely bound nuclei

The measurement of light charged particles evaporated from the reaction 6,7Li+6Li has been carried out at extreme backward angle in the energy range 14 - 20 MeV. Calculations from the code ALICE91 show that the symmetry of the target-projectile combination and the choice of level density parameter play important roles in explaining the evaporation spectra for these light particle systems. In above barrier energy region the fusion cross-section is not suppressed for these loosely bound nuclei.

Gravitational Collapse in an Expanding Universe: Scaling Relations for Two-Dimensional Collapse Revisited

We investigate non-linear scaling relations for two-dimensional gravitational collapse in an expanding background using a 2D TreePM code and study the strongly non-linear regime ($\barξ\leq 200$) for power law models. Evolution of these models is found to be scale-invariant in all our simulations. We find that the stable clustering limit is not reached, but there is a model independent non-linear scaling relation in the asymptotic regime. This confirms results from an earlier study which only probed the mildly non-linear regime ($\barξ\leq 40$). The correlation function in the extremely non-linear regime is a less steep function of scale than reported in earlier studies. We show that this is due to coherent transverse motions in massive haloes. We also study density profiles and find that the scatter in the inner and outer slopes is large and that there is no single universal profile that fits all cases. We find that the difference in typical density profiles for different models is smaller than expected from similarity solutions for halo profiles and transverse motions induced by substructure are a likely reason for this difference being small.

Entropy & equation of state (EOS) for hot bare strange stars

Compactness of some stars is explained if they are strange stars (SS) as shown by Dey et al. (1998) (D98) and Li et al. (1999a). One of these compact star candidates is the SAX J1808.4-3658 (SAX in short) believed to be an important link in the genesis of radio pulsars. SS have also been suggested for bursting X-ray pulsars (GRO J1744-28, Cheng et al. 1998), from quasi-periodic oscillations (QPO) of X-ray binaries (4U 1728-34, Li et al. 1999b) and from peculiarity of properties of radio pulsars (PSR 0943+10, Xu et al.1999; Kapoor et al. 2000). We now extend the calculation to include high temperatures upto T = 70 MeV ~ 8 times 10^{11} ^oK and find that the nature of the mass (M) and radius (R), derived from astrophysical data, is still retained. The entropy is calculated and matches onto that calculated from hadronic models thus supporting the idea that the quark-hadron transition may be continuous.

Rotating compact strange stars

We compute numerical models of uniformly rotating strange stars (SS) in general relativity for the recently proposed QCD-based equation of state (EOS) of strange quark matter (Dey et al. 1998). Static models based on this EOS are characterised by a larger surface redshift than strange stars within the MIT bag model. The frequencies of the fastest rotating configurations described by Dey model are much higher than these for neutron stars (NS) and for the simplest SS MIT bag model. We determine a number of physical parameters for such stars and compare them with those obtained for NS. We construct constant baryon mass equilibrium sequences both normal and supramassive. Similarly to the NS a supramassive SS, prior to collapse to a black hole, spins up as it loses angular momentum. We find the upper limits on maximal masses and maximal frequencies of the rotating configurations. We show that the maximal rotating frequency for each of considered evolutionary sequences is never the Keplerian one. A normal and low mass supramassive strange stars gaining angular momentum always slows down just before reaching the Keplerian limit. For a high mass supramassive SS sequence the Keplerian configuration is the one with the lowest rotational frequency in the sequence. The value of $T/W$ for rapidly rotating SS of any mass is significantly higher than those for ordinary NS. For Keplerian configurations it increases as mass decreases. The results are robust for all linear self-bound equations of state.

Isospin Lattice-Gas Model and Liquid-Gas Phase Transition in Asymmetric Nuclear Matter

An isospin lattice-gas model, which is a spin-1 Ising model, is employed to investigate the liquid-gas phase transition in asymmetric nuclear matter. We consider nuclear matter as a lattice where each lattice site can be either empty or occupied by a proton or a neutron, with a nearest-neighbor interaction among the nucleons. With the Bragg-Williams mean field approximation, we calculate various thermodynamic properties of nuclear matter for different densities and different proton-neutron asymmetry parameter $s$. Our model exhibits liquid-gas phase transition below a critical temperature $T_c$, and predicts a monotonic decreasing of $T_c$ as the magnitude of $s$ is increased. The dependence of the nuclear matter isotherms on the asymmetry parameter $s$ is discussed.

Isospin Lattice Gas Model and Nuclear-Matter Phase Diagram and Pressure-Volume Isotherms

We study a cubic lattice gas model for nuclear matter where each lattice site can be either occupied, by one proton or one neutron, or unoccupied. A nearest-neighbor interaction of the form $ - \sum_{ } J_{ij}τ_{zi} τ_{zj}$ is assumed. Our model is an isospin-1 Ising model, with ${τ_z}$ = (1,0,-1) representing respectively (proton, vacancy, neutron). A kinetic-energy term has been included in our model. Under the Bragg-Williams mean field approximation our model exhibits the existence of a dense phase (liquid-like) and a rare phase (gas-like). The nuclear-matter p-v isotherms given by our model are discussed.
