Nitrogen doping of metallic single-walled carbon nanotubes: n-type conduction and dipole scattering

The charge transport properties of individual, metallic nitrogen doped, single-walled carbon nanotubes are investigated. It is demonstrated that n-type conduction can be achieved by nitrogen doping. Evidence was obtained by appealing to electric-field effect measurements at ambient condition. The observed temperature dependencies of the zero-bias conductance indicate a disordered electron system with electric-dipole scattering, caused mainly by the pyridine-type nitrogen atoms in the honeycomb lattice. These results illustrate the possibility of creating all-metallic molecular devices, in which the charge carrier type can be controlled.

Charge Transfer and Charge Broadening of GEM Structures in High Magnetic Fields

We report on measurements of charge transfer in GEM structures in high magnetic fields. These were performed in the framework of the R&D work for a Time Projection Chamber at a future Linear Collider. A small test chamber has been installed into the aperture of a superconducting magnet with the GEM structures mounted perpendicular to the B field direction. The charge transfer is derived from the electrical currents monitored during irradiation with an ${}^{55}$Fe source. No severe loss of primary ionisation charge is observed, but an improved ion feedback suppression is achieved for high magnetic fields. Additionally, the width of the charge cloud released by individual ${}^{55}$Fe photons is measured using a finely segmented strip readout after the triple GEM structure. Charge widths between 0.3 and 0.5 mm RMS are observed, which originate from the charge broadening inside the GEM readout. This charge broadening is only partly suppressed at high magnetic fields.

Modelling and Measurement of Charge Transfer in Multiple GEM Structures

Measurements and numerical simulations on the charge transfer in Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) foils are presented and their implications for the usage of GEM foils in Time Projection Chambers are discussed. A small test chamber has been constructed and operated with up to three GEM foils. The charge transfer parameters derived from the electrical currents monitored during the irradiation with an Fe-55 source are compared with numerical simulations. The performance in magnetic fields up to 2 T is also investigated.

Nonlinear behavior in the Thermopower of Doped Carbon Nanotubes Due to Strong, Localized States

The temperature dependent thermoelectric power (TEP) of boron and nitrogen doped multi-walled carbon nanotube mats has been measured showing that such dopants can be used to modify the majority conduction from p-type to n-type. The TEP of boron doped nanotubes is positive, indicating hole-like carriers. In contrast, the nitrogen doped material exhibits negative TEP over the same temperature range, suggesting electron-like conduction. Therefore, the TEP distinct nonlinearites are primarily due to the formation of donor and acceptor states in the B- and N- doped materials. The sharply varying density of states used in our model can be directly correlated to the scanning tunneling spectroscopy studies of these materials.

Test Results on the Silicon Pixel Detector for the TTF-FEL Beam Trajectory Monitor

Test measurements on the silicon pixel detector for the beam trajectory monitor at the free electron laser of the TESLA test facility are presented. To determine the electronic noise of detector and read-out and to calibrate the signal amplitude of different pixels the 6 keV photons of the manganese K line are used. Two different methods determine the spatial accuracy of the detector: In one setup a laser beam is focused to a straight line and moved across the pixel structure. In the other the detector is scanned using a low-intensity electron beam of an electron microscope. Both methods show that the symmetry axis of the detector defines a straight line within 0.4 microns. The sensitivity of the detector to low energy X-rays is measured using a vacuum ultraviolet beam at the synchrotron light source HASYLAB. Additionally, the electron microscope is used to study the radiation hardness of the detector.

Propylene Carbonate Reexamined: Mode-Coupling $β$ Scaling without Factorisation ?

The dynamic susceptibility of propylene carbonate in the moderately viscous regime above $T_{\rm c}$ is reinvestigated by incoherent neutron and depolarised light scattering, and compared to dielectric loss and solvation response. Depending on the strength of $α$ relaxation, a more or less extended $β$ scaling regime is found. Mode-coupling fits yield consistently $λ=0.72$ and $T_{\rm c}=182 $K, although different positions of the susceptibility minimum indicate that not all observables have reached the universal asymptotics.
