Superdeformation and alpha - cluster structure in 35Cl

A superdeformed (SD) band has been identified in a non - alpha - conjugate nucleus 35Cl. It crosses the negative parity ground band above 11/2- and becomes the yrast at 15/2-. Lifetimes of all relevant states have been measured to follow the evolution of collectivity. Enhanced B(E2), B(E1) values as well as energetics provide evidences for superdeformation and existence of parity doublet cluster structure in an odd-A nucleus for the first time in A = 40 region. Large scale shell model calculations assign (sd)16(pf)3 as the origin of these states. Calculated spectroscopic factors correlate the SD states in 35Cl to those in 36Ar.

Pairing and shell evolution in neutron rich nuclei

From the experimental data on odd-even staggering of masses, we have shown that variation of pairing as a function of neutron number plays an important role in many distinctive features like occurrence of new shell closures, shell erosion, anomalous reduction of the energy of the first 2+ state and slower increase in the B(E2, 2_{+}^{1} \rightarrow 0_{+}^{1}) in the neutron-rich even-even nuclei in different mass regions. New predictions have been made in a model independent way. Results of theoretical calculations support the phenomenological findings.

Dark matter profiles and annihilation in dwarf spheroidal galaxies: prospectives for present and future gamma-ray observatories - I. The classical dSphs

Due to their large dynamical mass-to-light ratios, dwarf spheroidal galaxies (dSphs) are promising targets for the indirect detection of dark matter (DM) in gamma-rays. We examine their detectability by present and future gamma-ray observatories. The key innovative features of our analysis are: (i) We take into account the angular size of the dSphs; while nearby objects have higher gamma ray flux, their larger angular extent can make them less attractive targets for background-dominated instruments. (ii) We derive DM profiles and the astrophysical J-factor (which parameterises the expected gamma-ray flux, independently of the choice of DM particle model) for the classical dSphs directly from photometric and kinematic data. We assume very little about the DM profile, modelling this as a smooth split-power law distribution, with and without sub-clumps. (iii) We use a Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique to marginalise over unknown parameters and determine the sensitivity of our derived J-factors to both model and measurement uncertainties. (iv) We use simulated DM profiles to demonstrate that our J-factor determinations recover the correct solution within our quoted uncertainties. Our key findings are: (i) Sub-clumps in the dSphs do not usefully boost the signal; (ii) The sensitivity of atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes to dSphs within 20 kpc with cored halos can be up to ~50 times worse than when estimated assuming them to be point-like. Even for the satellite-borne Fermi-LAT the sensitivity is significantly degraded on the relevant angular scales for long exposures, hence it is vital to consider the angular extent of the dSphs when selecting targets; (iii) No DM profile has been ruled out by current data, but using a prior on the inner dark matter cusp slope 0<=gamma<=1 provides J-factor estimates accurate to a factor of a few if an appropriate angular scale [abridged]

Identification of the slow E3 transition 136mCs -> 136Cs with conversion electrons

We performed at ISOLDE the spectroscopy of the decay of the 8- isomer in 136Cs by and conversion-electron detection. For the first time the excitation energy of the isomer and the multipolarity of its decay have been measured. The half-life of the isomeric state was remeasured to T1/2 = 17.5(2) s. This isomer decays via a very slow 518 keV E3 transition to the ground state. In addition to this, a much weaker decay branch via a 413 keV M4 and a subsequent 105 keV E2 transition has been found. Thus we have found a new level at 105 keV with spin 4+ between the isomeric and the ground state. The results are discussed in comparison to shell model calculations.

Review on dynamically generated resonances

We present recent results on the vector meson-vector meson and vector meson-baryon interaction using a unitary approach based on the hidden-gauge Lagrangians. For the vector-vector case we find that 11 states get dynamically generated, corresponding to poles of the scattering matrices on the second Riemann sheet. In the vector-baryon sector we also find 9 states dynamically generated from the vector-baryon octet interaction and 10 from the vector-baryon decuplet interaction. We also report on baryon states found from the interaction of two mesons and a baryon.

Comparative study of FeCr2S4 and FeSc2S4: Spinels with orbitally active A site

Using first-principles density functional calculations, we perform a comparative study of two Fe based spinel compounds, FeCr2S4 and FeSc2S4. Though both systems contain an orbitally active A site with an Fe2+ ion, their properties are rather dissimilar. Our study unravels the microscopic origin of their behavior driven by the differences in hybridization of Fe d states with Cr/Sc d states and S p states in the two cases. This leads to important differences in the nature of the magnetic exchanges as well as the nearest versus next nearest neighbor exchange parameter ratios, resulting into significant frustration effects in FeSc2S4 which are absent in FeCr2S4.

Cooperative orbital ordering and Peierls instability in the checkerboard lattice with doubly degenerate orbitals

It has been suggested that the metal-insulator transitions in a number of spinel materials with partially-filled t_2g d-orbitals can be explained as orbitally-driven Peierls instabilities. Motivated by these suggestions, we examine theoretically the possibility of formation of such orbitally-driven states within a simplified theoretical model, a two-dimensional checkerboard lattice with two directional metal orbitals per atomic site. We include orbital ordering and inter-atom electron-phonon interactions self-consistently within a semi-classical approximation, and onsite intra- and inter-orbital electron-electron interactions at the Hartree-Fock level. We find a stable, orbitally-induced Peierls bond-dimerized state for carrier concentration of one electron per atom. The Peierls bond distortion pattern continues to be period 2 bond-dimerization even when the charge density in the orbitals forming the one-dimensional band is significantly smaller than 1. In contrast, for carrier density of half an electron per atom the Peierls instability is absent within one-electron theory as well as mean-field theory of electron-electron interactions, even for nearly complete orbital ordering. We discuss the implications of our results in relation to complex charge, bond, and orbital-ordering found in spinels.

Physics with the KLOE-2 experiment at the upgraded DA$ϕ$NE

Investigation at a $ϕ$--factory can shed light on several debated issues in particle physics. We discuss: i) recent theoretical development and experimental progress in kaon physics relevant for the Standard Model tests in the flavor sector, ii) the sensitivity we can reach in probing CPT and Quantum Mechanics from time evolution of entangled kaon states, iii) the interest for improving on the present measurements of non-leptonic and radiative decays of kaons and eta/eta$^\prime$ mesons, iv) the contribution to understand the nature of light scalar mesons, and v) the opportunity to search for narrow di-lepton resonances suggested by recent models proposing a hidden dark-matter sector. We also report on the $e^+ e^-$ physics in the continuum with the measurements of (multi)hadronic cross sections and the study of gamma gamma processes.

New magic number for neutron rich Sn isotopes

The variation of E(2+_1) of (134-140)Sn calculated with empirical SMPN interaction has striking similarity with that of experimental E(2+_1) of even-even (18-22)O and (42-48)Ca, showing clearly that N=84-88 spectra exhibit the effect of gradual filling up of ν(2f_{7/2}) orbital which finally culminates in a new shell closure at N=90. Realistic two-body interaction CWG does not show this feature. Spin-tensor decomposition of SMPN and CWG interactions and variation of their components with valence neutron number reveals that the origin of the shell closure at 140Sn lies in the three body effects. Calculations with CWG3, which is obtained by including a simple three-body monopole term in the CWG interaction, predict decreasing E(2+_1) for (134-138)Sn and a shell closure at 140Sn.

Baryon Resonances

In this talk I show recent results on how many excited baryon resonances appear as systems of one meson and one baryon, or two mesons and one baryon, with the mesons being either pseudoscalar or vectors. Connection with experiment is made including a discussion on old predictions and recent results for the photoproduction of the $Λ(1405)$ resonance, as well as the prediction of one $1/2^+$ baryon state around 1920 MeV which might have been seen in the $γp \to K^+ Λ$ reaction.

Astrophysical Implication of Low E(2^+_1) in Neutron-rich Sn Isotopes

The observation and prediction of unusually depressed first excited 2^+_1 states in even-A neutron - rich isotopes of semi-magic Sn above 132Sn provide motivations for reviewing the problems related to the nuclear astrophysics in general. In the present work, the beta-decay rates of the exotic even Sn isotopes (134,136Sn) above the 132Sn core have been calculated as a function of temperature (T). In order to get the necessary ft values, B(GT) values corresponding to allowed Gamow Teller (GT-) beta-decay have been theoretically calculated using shell model. The total decay rate shows decrease with increasing temperature as the ground state population is depleted and population of excited states with slower decay rates increases. The abundance at each Z value is inversely proportional to the decay constant of the waiting point nucleus for that particular Z. So the increase in half-life of isotopes of Sn, like 136Sn, might have substantial impact on the r-process nucleosynthesis.

Dynamically generated resonances

In this talk I report on recent work related to the dynamical generation of baryonic resonances, some made up from pseudoscalar meson-baryon, others from vector meson-baryon and a third type from two meson-one baryon systems. We can establish a correspondence with known baryonic resonances, reinforcing conclusions previously drawn and bringing new light on the nature of some baryonic resonances of higher mass.

Effect of self-affine fractal characteristics of surfaces on wetting

The relation between the contact angle of a liquid drop and the morphological parameters of self-affine solid surfaces have been investigated. We show experimentally that the wetting property of a solid surface crucially depends on the surface morphological parameters such as: (1) root mean square (rms) roughness $σ$, (2) in-plane roughness correlation length $ξ$ and (3) roughness exponent $α$ of the self-affine surface. We have shown that the contact angle monotonically decreases with the increase in the rms local surface slope $ρ$ ($\propto σ/ξ^α$) for the cases where the liquid wets the crevices of the surface upon contact. We have shown that the same solid surface can be made hydrophobic or hydrophilic by merely tuning these self-affine surface morphological parameters.

Proposed Orbital Ordering in MnV2O4 from First-principles Calculations

Based on density functional calculations, we propose a possible orbital ordering in MnV2O4 which consists of orbital chains running along crystallographic a and b directions with orbitals rotated alternatively by about 45 degrees within each chain. We show that the consideration of correlation effects as implemented in the local spin density approximation (LSDA)+U approach is crucial for a correct description of the space group symmetry. This implies that the correlation-driven orbital ordering has a strong influence on the structural transitions in this system. Inclusion of spin-orbit effects does not seem to influence the orbital ordering pattern. We further find that the proposed orbital arrangement favours a noncollinear magnetic ordering of V spins, as observed experimentally. Exchange couplings among V spins are also calculated and discussed.

Structure of A=138 isobars above the 132Sn core and the N-N interaction in the neutron-rich environment

Large basis untruncated shell model calculations have been done for the A=138 neutron -rich nuclei in the pi(gdsh) X nu(hfpi) valence space above the 132Sn core. Two (1+2) -body nuclear Hamiltonians, viz., realistic CWG and empirical SMPN in this model space have been used. Calculated ground state binding energies, level spectra and other spectroscopic properties have been compared with the available experimental data. Importance of untruncated shell model calculations in this model space has been pointed out. Shell model results for the very neutron rich Sn isotope (138Sn, N/Z=1.76) of astrophysical interest for which no spectroscopic information except beta -decay half life is available, have been presented. Shell structure and evolution of collectivity in the even-even A=138 isobars have been studied as a function of valence neutron and /or proton numbers. Calculations done for the first time, reproduce remarkably well the collective vibrational states in 138Te and 138Xe. Comparison of some of the important two-body matrix elements of the empirical SMPN, CW5082 and the realistic CWG interactions has been done. These matrix elements are important for ground state binding energies and low-lying spectra of nuclei in this region. Consideration of the predictability of the two interactions seems to suggest that, in order to incorporate the special features of the N-N interaction in such exotic n-rich environment above the 132Sn core, the use of local spectroscopic information from the region might be essential.

High-spin structure and Band Termination in $^{103}$Cd

Excited states of the neutron deficient $^{103}$Cd nucleus have been investigated via the $^{72}$Ge($^{35}$Cl, p3n) reaction at beam energy of 135 MeV by use of in-beam spectroscopic methods. Gamma rays depopulating the excited states were detected using the Gammasphere spectrometer with high-fold $γ$-ray coincidences. A quadrupole $γ$-ray coincidence analysis ($γ^{4}$) has been used to extend the known level scheme. The positive parity levels have been established up to $J = 35/2\hbar$ and $E_{x} = 7.071$ MeV. In addition to the observation of highly-fragmented level scheme belonging to the positive-parity sequences at E$_{x}\sim$ 5 MeV, the termination of a negative-parity sequence connected by $E2$ transitions has been established at $J = 47/2 \hbar$ and $E_{x} = 11.877$ MeV. The experimental results corresponding to both the positive- and negative-parity sequences have been theoretically interpreted in the framework of the core particle coupling model. Evidence is presented for a shape change from collective prolate to non-collective oblate above the $J^π = 39/2^{-}$ (8011 keV) level and for a smooth termination of the negative-parity band.
