Recent developments in chiral dynamics of hadrons and hadrons in a nuclear medium

In this talk I present recent developments in chiral dynamics of hadrons and hadrons in a medium addressing the following points: interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the octet of baryons of the nucleon, showing recent experimental evidence on the existence of two $Λ(1405)$ states, the interaction of the octet of pseudoscalar mesons with the decuplet of baryons of the $Δ$, with particular emphasis on the $Λ(1520)$ resonance, dynamically generated by this interaction. Then I review the interaction of kaons in a nuclear medium and briefly discuss the situation around the claims of deeply bound states in nuclei. The large renormalization of the $Λ(1520)$ in the nuclear medium is shown as another example of successful application of the chiral unitary techniques.

Infrared absorption in a quantum wire in the presence of spin-orbit coupling: a technique to measure different types of spin-orbit interaction strengths

We show that the dominant absorption peak due to inter-subband transition in a gated quantum wire, with two occupied subbands, will split into a main peak and two satellite peaks if both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions are present. One satellite peak will be red-shifted, and the other blue-shifted. From the relative intensity of either satellite peak, and the magnitude of the red- or blue-shift, we can determine both Rashba and Dresselhaus interaction strengths separately, if we also carry out a Hall measurement to determine the carrier concentration and a quantized conductance step measurement to determine the energy separation between subbands. This method may be a convenient alternative to usual magneto-transport measurements used to measure spin orbit interaction strengths. It is also more powerful because it allows us to measure the strengths of the two types of interactions separately.

Quantum decoherence and neutrino data

In this work we perform global fits of microscopic decoherence models of neutrinos to all available current data, including LSND and KamLAND spectral distortion results. In previous works on related issues the models used were supposed to explain LSND results by means of quantum gravity induced decoherence. However those models were purely phenomenological without any underlying microscopic basis. It is one of the main purposes of this article to use detailed microscopic decoherence models with complete positivity, to fit the data. The decoherence in these models has contributions not only from stochastic quantum gravity vacua operating as a medium, but also from conventional uncertainties in the energy of the (anti)neutrino beam. All these contributions lead to oscillation-length independent damping factors modulating the oscillatory terms from which one obtains an excellent fit to all available neutrino data, including LSND and Kamland spectral distortion.

Baryonic Resonances from the Interactions of the Baryon Decuplet and Meson Octet

We study $S$-wave interactions of the baryon decuplet with the octet of pseudoscalar mesons using the lowest order chiral Lagrangian. We find two bound states in the SU(3) limit corresponding to the octet and decuplet representations. These are found to split into eight different trajectories in the complex plane when the SU(3) symmetry is broken gradually. Finally, we are able to provide a reasonable description for a good number of 4-star ${3/2}^-$ resonances listed by the Particle Data Group. In particular, the $Ξ(1820)$, the $Λ(1520)$ and the $Σ(1670)$ states are well reproduced. We predict a few other resonances and also evaluate the couplings of the observed resonances to the various channels from the residues at the poles of the scattering matrix from where partial decay widths into different channels can be evaluated.

Critical points in the Bragg glass phase of a weakly pinned crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$

New experimental data are presented on the scan rate dependence of the magnetization hysteresis width $ΔM(H)$ ($\propto$ critical current density $J_c(H)$) in isothermal $M-H$ scans in a weakly pinned single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which displays second magnetization peak (SMP) anomaly as distinct from the peak effect (PE). We observe an interesting modulation in the field dependence of a parameter which purports to measure the dynamical annealing of the disordered bundles of vortices injected through the sample edges towards the destined equilibrium vortex state at a given $H$. These data, in conjunction with the earlier observations made while studying the thermomagnetic history dependence in $J_c(H)$ in the tracing of the minor hysteresis loops, imply that the partially disordered state heals towards the more ordered state between the peak field of the SMP anomaly and the onset field of the PE. The vortex phase diagram in the given crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been updated in the context of the notion of the phase coexistence of the ordered and disordered regions between the onset field of the SMP anomaly and the spinodal line located just prior to the irreversibility line. A multi-critical point and a critical point in the ($H,T$) region of the Bragg glass phase have been marked in this phase diagram and the observed behaviour is discussed in the light of recent data on multi-critical point in the vortex phase diagram in a single crystal of Nb.

Aspects of Open-Closed Duality in a Background B-Field

We study closed string exchanges in background $B$-field. By analysing the two point one loop amplitude in bosonic string theory, we show that tree-level exchange of lowest lying, tachyonic and massless closed string modes, have IR singularities similar to those of the nonplanar sector in noncommutative gauge theories. We further isolate the contributions from each of the massless modes. We interpret these results as the manifestation of open/closed string duality, where the IR behaviour of the boundary noncommutative gauge theory is reconstructed from the bulk theory of closed strings.

Aspects of Open-Closed Duality in a Background B-Field II

It was shown in [hep-th/0503009], in the context of bosonic theory that the IR singular terms that arise as a result of integrating out high momentum modes in nonplanar diagrams of noncommutative gauge theory can be recovered from low lying tree-level closed string exchanges. This follows as a natural consequence of world-sheet open-closed string duality. Here using the same setup we study the phenomenon for noncommutative ${\cal N}=2$ gauge theory realised on a $D_3$ fractional brane localised at the fixed point of $C^2/Z_2$. The IR singularities from the massless closed string exchanges are exactly equal to those coming from one-loop gauge theory. This is as a result of cancellation of all contributions from the massive modes.

Absence of M2 Retardation in $^{35}Cl$: Evidence for Stronger Isospin-Mixing Effects in A=35 Mirror Nuclei

The lifetime of the 3163 keV, 7/2$^-$ isomeric state in $^{35}Cl$ that decays by a stretched M2 transition to the $3/2^+$ ground state, has been re-measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, by gating on the 1185 keV transition which directly feeds this state. This eliminates the uncertainties in the measurement arising from the direct feedings from the continuum. A mean life of 0.6$^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$ ps has been obtained from the present work. This is considerably smaller than the adopted value 45.3(6) ps. Implication of this major reduction in the lifetime has been pointed out.

Study of isomers in neutron-rich magic $^{132}$Sn region

Shell model calculations have been done for interpreting two representative isomeric states in neutron rich $^{132}Sn$ region using SMN and SMPN Hamiltonians. They are, (i) 2.91 min isomer in $^{138}Cs$ and (ii) the 0.57 $μs$ isomer in $^{136}$Sb nuclei. The results are compared with those obtained with KH5082 and CW5082 Hamiltonians. How the results clearly distinguish the most appropriate interaction has been discussed.

Chiral dynamics of baryon resonances and hadrons in a nuclear medium

In these lectures I make an introduction to chiral unitary theory applied to the meson baryon interaction and show how several well known resonances are dynamically generated, and others are predicted. Two very recent experiments are analyzed, one of them showing the existence of two $Λ(1405)$ states and the other one providing support for the $Λ(1520)$ resonance as a quasibound state of $Σ(1385) π$. The use of chiral Lagrangians to account for the hadronic interaction at the elementary level introduces a new approach to deal with the modification of meson and baryon properties in a nuclear medium. Examples of it for $\bar{K}$, $η$ and $ϕ$ modification in the nuclear medium are presented.

Dynamically Generated Resonances in the Chiral Unitary Approach to Meson Baryon Interaction

In this talk we report on the use of a chiral unitary approach for the interaction of the octets of meson and baryon and the octet of mesons with the decuplet of baryons. Two octets of $J^π=1/2^-$ baryon states and a singlet are generated dynamically in the first case, resulting in the case of strangeness $S=-1$ in two poles of the scattering matrix close to the nominal $Λ(1405)$ resonance. In the second case many resonances are also generated, among them an exotic baryon with S=1 corresponding to a $ΔK$ resonance. We make suggestions of experiments which could show evidence for the existence of these states.

Hadronic aspects of exotic baryons

In this talk I look into three different topics, addressing first the possibility that the $Θ^+$ is a bound state of $K πN$, exploiting the results of this study to find out the contribution of two meson and one baryon components in the baryon antidecuplet and in the third place I present results on a new resonant exotic baryonic state which appears as dynamically generated by the Weinberg Tomozawa $ΔK$ interaction.

Closed String Tachyons on C/Z_N

We analyse the condensation of closed string tachyons on the $C/Z_N$ orbifold. We construct the potential for the tachyons upto the quartic interaction term in the large $N$ limit. In this limit there are near marginal tachyons. The quartic coupling for these tachyons is calculated by subtracting from the string theory amplitude for the tachyons, the contributions from the massless exchanges, computed from the effective field theory. We argue that higher point interaction terms are are also of the same order in 1/N as the quartic term and are necessary for existence of the minimum of the tachyon potential that is consistent with earlier analysis.

Global Optimization on an Evolving Energy Landscape

Locating the global minimum of a complex potential energy surface is facilitated by considering a homotopy, namely a family of surfaces that interpolate continuously from an arbitrary initial potential to the system under consideration. Different strategies can be used to follow the evolving minima. It is possible to enhance the probability of locating the global minimum through a heuristic choice of interpolation schemes and parameters, and the continuously evolving potential landscape reduces the probability of trapping in local minima. In application to a model problem, finding the ground--state configuration and energy of rare--gas (Lennard--Jones) atomic clusters, we demonstrate the utility and efficacy of this method.

The CDF-II Online Silicon Vertex Tracker

The Online Silicon Vertex Tracker is the new CDF-II level 2 trigger processor designed to reconstruct 2-D tracks within the Silicon Vertex Detector with high speed and accuracy. By performing a precise measurement of impact parameters the SVT allows tagging online B events which typically show displaced secondary vertices. Physics simulations show that this will greatly enhance the CDF-II B-physics capability. The SVT has been fully assembled and operational since the beginning of Tevatron RunII in April 2001. In this paper we briefly review the SVT design and physics motivation and then describe its performance during the early phase (April-October 2001) of run II.

Evolution of induced axial magnetization in a two-component magnetized plasma

In this paper, the evolution of the induced axial magnetization due to the propagation of an electromagnetic (em) wave along the static background magnetic field in a two-component plasma has been investigated using the Block equation. The evolution process induces a strong magnetic anisotropy in the plasma medium, depending nonlinearly on the incident wave amplitude. This induced magnetic anisotropy can modify the dispersion relation of the incident em wave, which has been obtained in this paper. In the low frequency Alfven wave limit, this dispersion relation shows that the resulting phase velocity of the incident wave depends on the square of the incident wave amplitude and on the static background magnetic field of plasma. The analytical results are in well agreement with the numerically estimated values in solar corona and sunspots.

Comparison of History Effects in Magnetization in Weakly pinned Crystals of high-$T_c$ and low-T$_c$ Superconductors

A comparison of the history effects in weakly pinned single crystals of a high $T_c$ YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7 - δ}$ (for H $\parallel$ c) and a low $T_c$ Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$, which show anomalous variations in critical current density $J_c(H)$ are presented via tracings of the minor magnetization hysteresis loops using a vibrating sample magnetometer. The sample histories focussed are, (i) the field cooled (FC), (ii) the zero field cooled (ZFC) and (iii) an isothermal reversal of field from the normal state. An understanding of the results in terms of the modulation in the plastic deformation of the elastic vortex solid and supercooling across order-disorder transition is sought.
