Peak effect in a superconducting DyBa2Cu3O7-y film at microwave frequencies

We report the observation of a peak in the microwave (9.55 GHz) surface resistance in an epitaxial DyBa2Cu3O7-y superconducting film in magnetic fields (parallel to the c axis) ranging between 0.2 to 0.9 Tesla. Such a peak is absent in the measurements done in zero-field. The temperature and field dependence of the peak suggests that this peak could be associated with the peak effect phenomenon reflecting the order-disorder transformation in the flux-line lattice. A strong dependence of this peak effect at frequencies close to the depinning frequency of the flux line lattice is observed.

Evidence for an inflationary phase transition from the LSS and CMB anisotropy data

In the light of the recent Boomerang and Maxima observations of the CMB which show an anomalously low second acoustic peak, we reexamine the prediction by Adams et al (1997) that this would be the consequence of a 'step' in the primordial spectrum induced by a spontaneous symmetry breaking phase transition during primordial inflation. We demonstrate that a deviation from scale-invariance around $k\sim0.1h$~Mpc$^{-1}$ can simultaneously explain both the feature identified earlier in the APM galaxy power spectrum as well the recent CMB anisotropy data, with a baryon density consistent with the BBN value. Such a break also allows a good fit to the data on cluster abundances even for a critical density matter-dominated universe with zero cosmological constant.

Establishment of a stable vortex state in the peak effect region in a weakly pinned superconductor CeRu_2

We present magnetization data on a weakly pinned CeRu_2 single crystal showing the existence of a stable state of the vortex lattice in the peak effect region. The stable state is achieved by cycling the magnetic field by small amplitude. This stable state is characterized by a unique value of critical current density (J_c), independent of the magnetic history of the sample. The results support the recent model proposed by Ravikumar et al \cite{r39} on the history dependence of the J_c.

Disordered Type-II Superconductors: A Universal Phase Diagram for Low-T$_c$ Systems

A universal phase diagram for weakly pinned low-T$_c$ type-II superconductors is revisited and extended with new proposals. The low-temperature ``Bragg glass'' phase is argued to transform first into a disordered, glassy phase upon heating. This glassy phase, a continuation of the high-field equilibrium vortex glass phase, then melts at higher temperatures into a liquid. This proposal provides an explanation for the anomalies observed in the peak effect regime of 2H-NbSe$_2$ and several other low-T$_c$ materials which is independent of the microscopic mechanisms of superconductivity in these systems.

Critical current of a superconductor measured via injection of spin polarized carriers

In this paper we report a direct evidence of the suppression of critical current due to pair-breaking in a superconducting micro-bridge when the measurement is carried out by injecting spin polarised carriers instead of normal electrons. A thin layer of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was used as the source of spin polarised carriers. The micro-bridge was formed on the DyBa2Cu3O7-d thin film by photo-lithographic techniques. The design of our spin-injection device allowed us to inject spin-polarised carriers from the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 layer directly to the DyBa2Cu3O7- d micro-bridge (without any insulating buffer layer) making it possible to measure the critical current when polarised electrons alone are injected into the superconductor. Our results confirm the role of polarised carriers in breaking the Cooper pairs in the superconductor.

Magnetic properties of a two-electron quantum dot

The low-energy eigenstates of two interacting electrons in a square quantum dot in a magnetic field are determined by numerical diagonalization. In the strong correlation regime, the low-energy eigenstates show Aharonov-Bohm type oscillations, which decrease in amplitude as the field increases. These oscillations, including the decrease in amplitude, may be reproduced to good accuracy by an extended Hubbard model in a basis of localized one-electron Hartree states. The hopping matrix element, $t$, comprises the usual kinetic energy term plus a term derived from the Coulomb interaction. The latter is essential to get good agreement with exact results. The phase of $t$ gives rise to the usual Peierls factor, related to the flux through a square defined by the peaks of the Hartree wavefunctions. The magnitude of $t$ decreases slowly with magnetic field as the Hartree functions become more localized, giving rise to the decreasing amplitude of the Aharonov-Bohm oscillations.

Electron Capture Rates of Mid-fp Shell Nuclei for Supernova and Stellar Evolution

A detailed model is constructed for the calculation of electron capture rates of some fp-shell nuclei for situations prevailing in pre-supernova and collapse phases of the evolution of the core of massive stars leading to supernova explosion. The model uses explicitly the Gamow-Teller strength function obtained through (n,p) reaction studies wherever available. The rates include contribution from the excited states of the mother as well as from the resonant states in equilibrium with the back reaction i.e. the beta decay of the daughter nucleus. Comparisons are made with the shell model results and the earlier calculations by Aufderheide et al. and Fuller, Fowler and Newman. For the nuclei $^{56}$Fe, $^{55}$Mn and $^{60}$Ni with negative Q-values one observes large contribution from the excited states.

Peak Effect in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ : Vortex Phase Diagram and Evidences for Stepwise Amorphization of Flux Line Lattice

The Peak Effect (PE) regime in a single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been investigated in detail via ac susceptibility as well as dc magnetization measurements. The PE region comprises two discontinuous first order like transitions, located near its onset and peak positions and reflects a stepwise fracturing of the flux line lattice (FLL). This scenario can be construed as an alternative to a scheme involving the appearance of Generalized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (GFFLO) state as considered in the case of PE phenomenon in isostructural Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ system. The procedure of thermal cycling across the onset position of PE produces an open hysteresis loop, which is consistent with the notion of the fracturing of the FLL. A study of thermomagnetic history dependence of different metastable vortex states shows the path dependence in the critical current density J_c(H,T) over a large part of the (H,T) parameter space. The path dependence in J_c ceases above the peak position of the PE, suggesting a complete amorphization and the loss of long range correlations of the FLL at (T_p, H_p) line. A plausible vortex phase diagram has been illustrated for Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$n and phases like an elastic solid, a plastic solid, a pinned amorphous and an unpinned amorphous states have been identified.

Abelian-Higgs-Navier-Stokes Hydrodynamics for Nematic Films with Defects

A new theory of hydrodynamics of uniaxial nematic liquid crystal films in the presence of defects is developed. A gauge field incorporating screening is introduced, resulting in the static elastic free energy having the form of a two-dimensional Abelian-Higgs model. Hydrodynamic equations are derived via the standard methods of de~Groot and Mazur. By working in the vicinity of the Bogomol'nyi equations consequences for defect centre motion are outlined.

Half-lives and pre-supernova weak interaction rates for nuclei away from the stability line

A detailed model for the calculation of beta decay rates of the $fp$ shell nuclei for situations prevailing in pre-supernova and collapse phases of evolution of the core of massive stars leading to supernova explosion has been extended for electron-capture rates. It can also be used to determine the half-lives of neutron-rich nuclei in the $fp/fpg$ shell. The model uses an averaged Gamow-Teller (GT) strength function. But it can also use the experimental log ft values and GT strength function from $(n,p)$ reaction studies wherever available. The calculated rate includes contributions from each of the low-lying excited states of the mother including some specific resonant states ("back resonance") having large GT matrix elements.

Magnetic field dependent variable range hopping behaviour in resistivity at low temperatures in polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive manganites: evidence of spin polarised tunnelling

It has been observed that the low temperature magnetoresistance behaviour in polycrystalline colossal magnetoresistive (CMR) manganites differ significantly from the single crystals. The polycrystalline samples show large magnetoresistance at temperatures much below the ferromagnetic transition temperature where the magnetoresistance of single crystals is very small. This has conventionally been attributed to spin polarised tunnelling at the grain boundaries in polycrystalline samples. In this paper we show the existence of a variable range hopping behaviour in resistivity at low temperatures in polycrystalline CMR samples. This behaviour gets gradually suppressed under the application of magnetic field. We discuss the significance of these results with respect to spin polarised tunnelling.

Spectral Distribution Studies of fp shell nuclei with modified Kuo--Brown Interaction

The structure of nuclei in the lower half of fp shell is investigated by the spectral distribution method using the modified Kuo-Brown interaction. This interaction recently showed success in reproducing observed properties through detailed shell model studies. Spectral distribution studies avoid explicit diagonalization and hold promise for applications to astrophysics.

Successful Supersymmetric Inflation

We reconsider the problems of cosmological inflation in effective supergravity theories. A singlet field in a hidden sector is demonstrated to yield an acceptable inflationary potential, without fine tuning. In the simplest such model, the requirement of generating the microwave background anisotropy measured by COBE fixes the inflationary scale to be about $10^{14}$ GeV, implying a reheat temperature of order $10^{5}$ GeV. This is low enough to solve the gravitino problem but high enough to allow baryogenesis after inflation. Such consistency requires that the generation of gravitational waves be negligible and that the spectrum of scalar density perturbations depart significantly from scale-invariance, thus improving the fit to large-scale structure in an universe dominated by cold dark matter. We also consider the problems associated with gravitino production through inflaton decay and with other weakly coupled fields such as the moduli encountered in (compactified) string theories.

Flavour Equilibration in Quark-Gluon Plasma

Within the framework of a dynamical and physically transparent model developed earlier, we study the time evolution of various quark flavours in the baryon-free region in ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions. We show that even under optimistic conditions, the quark-gluon system fails to achieve chemical equilibrium.

Cosmology of the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We discuss the domain wall problem in the Next-to-Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, with particular attention to the usual solution of explicit breaking of the discrete symmetry by non-renormalisable operators. This ``solution'' leads to a contradiction between the requirements of cosmology and those of avoiding the destabilisation of the hierarchy.
