Neutron capture cross section of unstable 63Ni: implications for stellar nucleosynthesis

The $^{63}$Ni($n, γ$) cross section has been measured for the first time at the neutron time-of-flight facility n\_TOF at CERN from thermal neutron energies up to 200 keV. In total, capture kernels of 12 (new) resonances were determined. Maxwellian Averaged Cross Sections were calculated for thermal energies from kT = 5 keV to 100 keV with uncertainties around 20%. Stellar model calculations for a 25 M$_\odot$ star show that the new data have a significant effect on the $s$-process production of $^{63}$Cu, $^{64}$Ni, and $^{64}$Zn in massive stars, allowing stronger constraints on the Cu yields from explosive nucleosynthesis in the subsequent supernova.

The coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in nano-scale metallic grains

A nano-scale metallic grain in which the single-particle dynamics are chaotic is described by the so-called universal Hamiltonian. This Hamiltonian includes a superconducting pairing term and a ferromagnetic exchange term that compete with each other: pairing correlations favor minimal ground-state spin, while the exchange interaction favors maximal spin polarization. Of particular interest is the fluctuation-dominated regime where the bulk pairing gap is comparable to or smaller than the single-particle mean level spacing and the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory of superconductivity breaks down. Superconductivity and ferromagnetism can coexist in this regime. We identify signatures of the competition between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in a number of quantities: ground-state spin, conductance fluctuations when the grain is weakly coupled to external leads and the thermodynamic properties of the grain, such as heat capacity and spin susceptibility.

A curved-element unstructured discontinuous Galerkin method on GPUs for the Euler equations

In this work we consider Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin methods (RKDG) for the solution of hyperbolic equations enabling high order discretization in space and time. We aim at an efficient implementation of DG for Euler equations on GPUs. A mesh curvature approach is presented for the proper resolution of the domain boundary. This approach is based on the linear elasticity equations and enables a boundary approximation with arbitrary, high order. In order to demonstrate the performance of the boundary curvature a massively parallel solver on graphics processors is implemented and utilized for the solution of the Euler equations of gas-dynamics.

Neutron-skin thickness from the study of the anti-analog giant dipole resonance

The gamma-decay of the anti-analog of the giant dipole resonance (AGDR) has been measured to the isobaric analog state excited in the p(124Sn,n) reaction at a beam energy of 600 MeV/nucleon. The energy of the transition was also calculated with state-of-the-art self-consistent random-phase approximation (RPA) and turned out to be very sensitive to the neutron-skin thickness (\DeltaR_(pn)). By comparing the theoretical results with the measured one, the \DeltaR_(pn) value for 124Sn was deduced to be 0.175 \pm 0.048 fm, which agrees well with the previous results. The energy of the AGDR measured previously for ^(208)Pb was also used to determine the \DeltaR_(pn) for ^(208)Pb. In this way a very precise \DeltaR_(pn) = 0.181 \pm 0.031 neutron-skin thickness has been obtained for 208Pb. The present method offers new possibilities for measuring the neutron-skin thicknesses of very exotic isotopes.

An Analytic Initial-State Parton Shower

We present a new algorithm for an analytic parton shower. While the algorithm for the final-state shower has been known in the literature, the construction of an initial-state shower along these lines is new. The aim is to have a parton shower algorithm for which the full analytic form of the probability distribution for all branchings is known. For these parton shower algorithms it is therefore possible to calculate the probability for a given event to be generated, providing the potential to reweight the event after the simulation. We develop the algorithm for this shower including scale choices and angular ordering. Merging to matrix elements is used to describe high-energy tails of distributions correctly. Finally, we compare our results with those of other parton showers and with experimental data from LEP, Tevatron and LHC.

Polariton Mott insulator with trapped ions or circuit QED

We consider variants of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model of lattice polaritons, taking into account next-nearest-neighbor, diagonal and long-range photon hopping in one and two dimensions. These models are relevant for potential experimental realizations of polariton Mott insulators based on trapped ions or microwave stripline resonators. We obtain the Mott-superfluid phase boundary and calculate excitation spectra in the Mott phase using numerical and analytical methods. Including the additional hopping terms leads to a larger Mott phase in the case of trapped ions, and to a smaller Mott phase in the case of stripline resonators, compared to the original model with nearest-neighbor hopping only. The critical hopping for the transition changes by up to about 50 percent in one dimension, and by up to about 20 percent in two dimensions. In contrast, the excitation spectra remain largely unaffected.

Planar hybrid superconductor-normal metal-superconductor thin film junctions based on BaFe1.8Co0.2As2

To investigate the transport properties of iron based superconductors, we prepared planar hybrid superconductor-normal metal-superconductor (SNS') thin film junctions with BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 as base electrode. As counter electrode we used a lead indium alloy, while the normal metal layer was formed by thin gold films. Temperature dependent measurements of the electrical conductivity were strongly influenced by the properties of the electrodes. We developed a junction structure that allows us to characterize the electrodes, too, including the behavior of their normal state resistance in order to correct their influences on the conduction spectra. The corrected conductivity of the junction was described within an extended BTK-model and shows a behavior dominated by Andreev reflexion.

Dynamical critical exponent of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model

An array of high-Q electromagnetic resonators coupled to qubits gives rise to the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model describing a superfluid to Mott insulator transition of lattice polaritons. From mean-field and strong coupling expansions, the critical properties of the model are expected to be identical to the scalar Bose-Hubbard model. A recent Monte Carlo study of the superfluid density on the square lattice suggested that this does not hold for the fixed-density transition through the Mott lobe tip. Instead, mean-field behavior with a dynamical critical exponent z=2 was found. We perform large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulations to investigate the critical behavior of the superfluid density and the compressibility. We find z=1 at the tip of the insulating lobe. Hence the transition falls in the 3D XY universality class, analogous to the Bose-Hubbard model.

Dispersive Photon Blockade in a Superconducting Circuit

Mediated photon-photon interactions are realized in a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity coupled to a superconducting charge qubit. These non-resonant interactions blockade the transmission of photons through the cavity. This so-called dispersive photon blockade is characterized by measuring the total transmitted power while varying the energy spectrum of the photons incident on the cavity. A staircase with four distinct steps is observed and can be understood in an analogy with electron transport and the Coulomb blockade in quantum dots. This work differs from previous efforts in that the cavity-qubit excitations retain a photonic nature rather than a hybridization of qubit and photon and provides the needed tolerance to disorder for future condensed matter experiments.

Fast transport of Bose-Einstein condensates

We propose an inverse method to accelerate without final excitation the adiabatic transport of a Bose Einstein condensate. The method, applicable to arbitrary potential traps, is based on a partial extension of the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariants, and provides transport protocols that satisfy exactly the no-excitation conditions without constraints or approximations. This inverse method is complemented by optimizing the trap trajectory with respect to different physical criteria and by studying the effect of noise.

The competition between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in small metallic grains: thermodynamic properties

We study the thermodynamic properties of a small superconducting metallic grain using a quantum Monte Carlo method. The grain is described by the universal Hamiltonian, containing pairing and ferromagnetic exchange correlations. In particular, we study how the thermodynamic signatures of pairing correlations are affected by the spin exchange interaction. We find the exchange interaction effects to be qualitatively different in the BCS and fluctuation-dominated regimes of pairing correlations.

Non-equilibrium delocalization-localization transition of photons in circuit QED

We show that photons in two tunnel-coupled microwave resonators each containing a single superconduct- ing qubit undergo a sharp non-equilibrium delocalization-localization (self-trapping) transition due to strong photon-qubit coupling. We find that dissipation favors the self-trapped regime and leads to the possibility of observing the transition as a function of time without tuning any parameter of the system. Furthermore, we find that self-trapping of photons in one of the resonators (spatial localization) forces the qubit in the opposite resonator to remain in its initial state (energetic localization). This allows for an easy experimental observation of the transition by local read-out of the qubit state.

BaFe_{1.8}Co_{0.2}As_2 thin film hybrid Josephson junctions

Josephson junctions with iron pnictides open the way for fundamental experiments on superconductivity in these materials and their application in superconducting devices. Here, we present hybrid Josephson junctions with a BaFe_{1.8}Co_{0.2}As_2 thin film electrode, an Au barrier and a PbIn counter electrode. The junctions show RSJ-like current-voltage characteristics up to the critical temperature of the counter electrode of about 7.2K. The temperature dependence of the critical current, IC, does not show an Ambegaokar-Baratoff behavior. Well-pronounced Shapiro steps are observed at microwave frequencies of 10-18GHz. Assuming an excess current, I_ex, of 200 μA at 4.2K we get an effective I_C R_N product of 6 μV.

PHAT: PHoto-z Accuracy Testing

Here we introduce PHAT, the PHoto-z Accuracy Testing programme, an international initiative to test and compare different methods of photo-z estimation. Two different test environments are set up, one (PHAT0) based on simulations to test the basic functionality of the different photo-z codes, and another one (PHAT1) based on data from the GOODS survey. The accuracy of the different methods is expressed and ranked by the global photo-z bias, scatter, and outlier rates. Most methods agree well on PHAT0 but produce photo-z scatters that can differ by up to a factor of two even in this idealised case. A larger spread in accuracy is found for PHAT1. Few methods benefit from the addition of mid-IR photometry. Remaining biases and systematic effects can be explained by shortcomings in the different template sets and the use of priors on the one hand and an insufficient training set on the other hand. Scatters of 4-8% in Delta_z/(1+z) were obtained, consistent with other studies. However, somewhat larger outlier rates (>7.5% with Delta_z/(1+z)>0.15; >4.5% after cleaning) are found for all codes. There is a general trend that empirical codes produce smaller biases than template-based codes. The systematic, quantitative comparison of different photo-z codes presented here is a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art of photo-z estimation and sets a standard for the assessment of photo-z accuracy in the future. The rather large outlier rates reported here for PHAT1 on real data should be investigated further since they are most probably also present (and possibly hidden) in many other studies. The test data sets are publicly available and can be used to compare new methods to established ones and help in guiding future photo-z method development. (abridged)

Excitations of strongly correlated polaritons

We use an analytic slave-boson approach to calculate the elementary excitations of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard Model (JCHM) describing strongly correlated polaritons on a lattice in various quantum optical systems. In the superfluid phase near the Mott transition we find a gapless, linear Goldstone mode and a gapped Amplitude mode corresponding to phase and density fluctuations, respectively. The sound velocity of the Goldstone mode develops a peculiar anomaly as a function of detuning at low densities, which persists into the weakly interacting regime of a polariton BEC.

Construction and Commissioning of the CALICE Analog Hadron Calorimeter Prototype

An analog hadron calorimeter (AHCAL) prototype of 5.3 nuclear interaction lengths thickness has been constructed by members of the CALICE Collaboration. The AHCAL prototype consists of a 38-layer sandwich structure of steel plates and highly-segmented scintillator tiles that are read out by wavelength-shifting fibers coupled to SiPMs. The signal is amplified and shaped with a custom-designed ASIC. A calibration/monitoring system based on LED light was developed to monitor the SiPM gain and to measure the full SiPM response curve in order to correct for non-linearity. Ultimately, the physics goals are the study of hadron shower shapes and testing the concept of particle flow. The technical goal consists of measuring the performance and reliability of 7608 SiPMs. The AHCAL was commissioned in test beams at DESY and CERN. The entire prototype was completed in 2007 and recorded hadron showers, electron showers and muons at different energies and incident angles in test beams at CERN and Fermilab.

Fast optimal frictionless atom cooling in harmonic traps

A method is proposed to cool down atoms in a harmonic trap without phase-space compression as in a perfectly slow adiabatic expansion, i.e., keeping the populations of the instantaneous initial and final levels invariant, but in a much shorter time. This may require that the harmonic trap becomes an expulsive parabolic potential in some time interval. The cooling times achieved are also shorter than previous minimal times using optimal-control bang-bang methods and real frequencies.

Strong coupling theory for the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model

We present an analytic strong-coupling approach to the phase diagram and elementary excitations of the Jaynes-Cummings-Hubbard model describing a superfluid-insulator transition of polaritons in an array of coupled QED cavities. In the Mott phase, we find four modes corresponding to particle/hole excitations with lower and upper polaritons, respectively. Simple formulas are derived for the dispersion relation and spectral weights within a strong-coupling random-phase approximation (RPA). The phase boundary is calculated beyond RPA by including the leading correction due to quantum fluctuations.
