Mesoscopic interplay of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in ultra-small metallic grains

We review the effects of electron-electron interactions on the ground-state spin and the transport properties of ultra-small chaotic metallic grains. Our studies are based on an effective Hamiltonian that combines a superconducting BCS-like term and a ferromagnetic Stoner-like term. Such terms originate in pairing and spin exchange correlations, respectively. This description is valid in the limit of a large dimensionless Thouless conductance. We present the ground-state phase diagram in the fluctuation-dominated regime where the single-particle mean level spacing is comparable to the bulk BCS pairing gap. This phase diagram contains a regime in which pairing and spin exchange correlations coexist in the ground-state wave function. We discuss the calculation of the tunneling conductance for an almost-isolated grain in the Coulomb-blockade regime, and present measurable signatures of the competition between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in the mesoscopic fluctuations of the conductance.

Mesoscopic competition of superconductivity and ferromagnetism: conductance peak statistics in metallic grains

We investigate the competition between superconductivity and ferromagnetism in chaotic ultra-small metallic grains in a regime where both phases can coexist. We use an effective Hamiltonian that combines a BCS-like pairing term and a ferromagnetic Stoner-like spin exchange term. We study the transport properties of the grain in the Coulomb blockade regime and identify signatures of the coexistence between pairing and exchange correlations in the mesoscopic fluctuations of the conductance peak spacings and peak heights.

Effect of a Zeeman field on the superconductor-ferromagnet transition in metallic grains

We investigate the competition between pairing correlations and ferromagnetism in small metallic grains in the presence of a Zeeman field. Our analysis is based on the universal Hamiltonian, valid in the limit of large Thouless conductance. We show that the coexistence regime of superconducting and ferromagnetic correlations can be made experimentally accessible by tuning an external Zeeman field. We compare the exact solution of the model with a mean-field theory and find that the latter cannot describe pairing correlations in the intermediate regime. We also study the occurrence of spin jumps across the phase boundary separating the superconducting and coexistence regimes.

Thermodynamics of ultra-small metallic grains in the auxiliary-field Monte Carlo approach

We use an auxiliary-field Monte Carlo (AFMC) method to calculate thermodynamic properties (spin susceptibility and heat capacity) of ultra-small metallic grains in the presence of pairing correlations. This method allows us to study the crossover from bulk systems, where mean-field BCS theory is valid, to the fluctuation-dominated regime of ultra-small particles at finite temperature. The computational effort at low temperatures is significantly reduced by exploiting a simple renormalization method.

Reentrant Phenomenon in Quantum Phase Diagram of Optical Boson Lattice

We calculate the location of the quantum phase transitions of a bose gas trapped in an optical lattice as a function of effective scattering length $a_{\eff}$ and temperature $T$. Knowledge of recent high-loop results on the shift of the critical temperature at weak couplings is used to locate a {\em nose} in the phase diagram above the free Bose-Einstein critical temperature $T_c^{(0)}$, thus predicting the existence of a reentrant transition {\em above} $T_c^{(0)}$, where a condensate should form when {\em increasing} $a_{\eff}$. At zero temperature, the transition to the normal phase produces the experimentally observed Mott insulator.

Electron-phonon coupling and its evidence in the photoemission spectra of lead

We present a detailed study on the influence of strong electron-phonon coupling to the photoemission spectra of lead. Representing the strong-coupling regime of superconductivity, the spectra of lead show characteristic features that demonstrate the correspondence of physical properties in the normal and the superconducting state, as predicted by the Eliashberg theory. These features appear on an energy scale of a few meV and are accessible for photoemission only by using modern spectrometers with high resolution in energy and angle.

Temperature dependence of the Kondo resonance and its satellites in CeCu_2Si_2

We present high-resolution photoemission spectroscopy studies on the Kondo resonance of the strongly-correlated Ce system CeCu$_2$Si$_2$. Exploiting the thermal broadening of the Fermi edge we analyze position, spectral weight, and temperature dependence of the low-energy 4f spectral features, whose major weight lies above the Fermi level $E_F$. We also present theoretical predictions based on the single-impurity Anderson model using an extended non-crossing approximation (NCA), including all spin-orbit and crystal field splittings of the 4f states. The excellent agreement between theory and experiment provides strong evidence that the spectral properties of CeCu$_2$Si$_2$ can be described by single-impurity Kondo physics down to $T \approx 5$ K.

Soundwave Anomalies in SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2}

The temperature and high magnetic field dependence of the longitudinal soundwave mode c_{11} in the two dimensional dimer system SrCu_{2}(BO_{3})_{2} is presented. c_{11}(T) shows anomalies due to strong interdimer spin-strain coupling. We can quantitatively interpret the temperature dependence of c_{11}(T) together with the magnetic susceptibility $χ_{m}(T)$ with a molecular field approximation of coupled dimer triplets. The sound velocity up to 50T shows very sharp softening between the magnetization plateaus at low temperature. We argue that these pronounced effects arise from a resonant interaction between the phonons and the magnetic excitations which show softening between the plateaus.

High Magnetic Field ESR in the Haldane Spin Chains NENP and NINO

We present electron spin resonance experiments in the one-dimensional antiferromagnetic S=1 spin chains NENP and NINO in pulsed magnetic fields up to 50T. The measured field dependence of the quantum energy gap for B||b is analyzed using the exact diagonalization method and the density matrix renormalization group method (DMRG). A staggered anisotropy term (-1)^i d(S_i^x S_i^z + S_i^z S_i^x) was considered for the first time in addition to a staggered field term (-1)^i S_i^x B_st. We show that the spin dynamics in high magnetic fields strongly depends on the orthorhombic anisotropy E.

A dynamical, confining model and hot quark stars

We explore the consequences of an equation of state (EOS) obtained in a confining Dyson-Schwinger equation model of QCD for the structure and stability of nonstrange quark stars at finite-T, and compare the results with those obtained using a bag-model EOS. Both models support a temperature profile that varies over the star's volume and the consequences of this are model independent. However, in our model the analogue of the bag pressure is (T,mu)-dependent, which is not the case in the bag model. This is a significant qualitative difference and comparing the results effects a primary goal of elucidating the sensitivity of quark star properties to the form of the EOS.

Non-Markovian effects in strong-field pair creation

We analyze a quantum kinetic equation describing both boson and fermion pair production and explore analytically and numerically the solution of the non-Markovian kinetic equation. In the Markovian limit of the kinetic equation we find an analytical solution for the single particle distribution function of bosons and fermions. The numerical investigation for a homogeneous, constant electric field shows an enhancement (bosons) or a suppression (fermions) of the pair creation rate according to the symmetry character of the produced particles. For strong fields non-Markovian effects are important while they disappear for weak fields. Hence it is sufficient to apply the low density limit for weak fields but necessary to take into account memory effects for strong fields.

ESR Modes in CsCuCl3 in Pulsed Magnetic Fields

We present ESR results for 35-134GHz in the antiferromagnet CsCuCl3 at T=1.5K. The external field is applied perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis. With our pulsed field facility we reach 50T an unprecedented field for low temperature ESR. We observe strong resonances up to fields close to the ferromagnetic region of ~30T. These results are discussed in a model for antiferromagnetic modes in a two-dimensional frustrated triangular spin system.

Creation of boson and fermion pairs in strong fields

We analyze a quantum kinetic equation describing both boson and fermion pair production. We explore the solution of the kinetic equation in its Markovian limit. The numerical study shows an enhancement (bosons) or a suppression (fermions) of the pair creation rate according to their quantum statistics. The modification of the time evolution of the distribution function is small but for strong fields more pronounced than for weak fields.

A quantum kinetic equation for particle production in the Schwinger mechanism

A quantum kinetic equation is derived for the description of pair production in a time-dependent homogeneous electric field $E(t)$. As a source term, the Schwinger mechanism for particle creation is incorporated. Possible particle production due to collisions and collisional damping are neglected. The main result is a kinetic equation of non-Markovian character. In the low density approximation, the source term is reduced to the leading part of the well known Schwinger formula for the probability of pair creation. We discuss the momentum and time dependence of the derived source term and compare with other approaches.

Analysis of chiral and thermal susceptibilities

We calculate the chiral and thermal susceptibilities for two confining Dyson-Schwinger equation models of QCD with two light flavours, a quantitative analysis of which yields the critical exponents, beta and delta, that characterise the second-order chiral symmetry restoration transition. The method itself is of interest, minimising the influence of numerical noise in the calculation of the order parameter for chiral symmetry breaking near the critical temperature. For the more realistic of the two models we find: T_c approx. 153 MeV, and the non-mean-field values: beta = 0.46 +/- 0.04, delta = 4.3 +/- 0.3 and 1/(beta delta)= 0.54 +/- 0.05, which we discuss in comparison with the results of other models.

Excess low energy photon pairs from pion annihilation at the chiral phase transition

The photon pair production by pion annihilation in a hot and dense medium at the chiral phase transition is investigated within a chiral quark model. As a direct consequence of this transition the $σ$ meson appears as a bound state in the domain of temperatures and chemical potentials where the condition $M_σ(T,μ) \approx 2 M_π(T,μ)$ is fulfilled. This effect results in a strong enhancement of the cross section for the pion annihilation process $2 π\to 2 γ$ compared with the vacuum case. The calculation of the photon pair production rate as function of the invariant mass shows a strong enhancement and narrowing of the $σ$ meson resonance at threshold due to chiral symmetry restoration.

Chemical potential dependence of pi and rho properties

Using a confining, Dyson-Schwinger equation model of QCD at finite temperature (T) and chemical potential (mu) we study the behaviour of , m_pi, f_pi and the masses of the rho- and phi-mesons. For each of these quantities there is a necessary anticorrelation between its response to T and its response to mu. (- ) and f_pi decrease with T and increase with mu; m_pi is almost insensitive to T and mu until very near the border of the confinement domain; and the mass of the longitudinal component of the vector mesons increases with T and decreases with mu. At T=0, the rho-meson mass is reduced by approximately 15% at nuclear matter density. These results are a consequence of the necessary momentum-dependence of the dressed-quark self-energy.
