Quantum measurement backaction from a BEC coupled to a mechanical oscillator

We study theoretically the dynamics of a a hybrid optomechanical system consisting of a macroscopic mechanical membrane magnetically coupled to a spinor Bose-Einstein condensate via a nanomagnet attached at the membrane center. We demonstrate that this coupling permits us to monitor indirectly the center-of-mass position of the membrane via measurements of the spin of the condensed atoms. These measurements normally induce a significant backaction on the membrane motion, which we quantify for the cases of thermal and coherent initial states of the membrane. We discuss the possibility of measuring that quantum backaction via repeated measurements. We also investigate the potential to generate non-classical states of the membrane, in particular Schrodinger cat states, via such repeated measurements.

Optimizing Dialogue Management with Reinforcement Learning: Experiments with the NJFun System

Designing the dialogue policy of a spoken dialogue system involves many nontrivial choices. This paper presents a reinforcement learning approach for automatically optimizing a dialogue policy, which addresses the technical challenges in applying reinforcement learning to a working dialogue system with human users. We report on the design, construction and empirical evaluation of NJFun, an experimental spoken dialogue system that provides users with access to information about fun things to do in New Jersey. Our results show that by optimizing its performance via reinforcement learning, NJFun measurably improves system performance.

ATTac-2000: An Adaptive Autonomous Bidding Agent

The First Trading Agent Competition (TAC) was held from June 22nd to July 8th, 2000. TAC was designed to create a benchmark problem in the complex domain of e-marketplaces and to motivate researchers to apply unique approaches to a common task. This article describes ATTac-2000, the first-place finisher in TAC. ATTac-2000 uses a principled bidding strategy that includes several elements of adaptivity. In addition to the success at the competition, isolated empirical results are presented indicating the robustness and effectiveness of ATTac-2000's adaptive strategy.

Asymmetric Berry-Phase Interference Patterns in a Single-Molecule Magnet

A Mn4 single-molecule magnet displays asymmetric Berry-phase interference patterns in the transverse-field (HT) dependence of the magnetization tunneling probability when a longitudinal field (HL) is present, contrary to symmetric patterns observed for HL=0. Reversal of HL results in a reflection of the transverse-field asymmetry about HT=0, as expected on the basis of the time-reversal invariance of the spin-orbit Hamiltonian which is responsible for the tunneling oscillations. A fascinating motion of Berry-phase minima within the transverse-field magnitude-direction phase space results from a competition between noncollinear magnetoanisotropy tensors at the two distinct Mn sites.

Phase diagram of iron-arsenide superconductors Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 <= x <= 0.2)

Platelet-like single crystals of the Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 series having lateral dimensions up to 15 mm and thickness up to 0.5 mm were obtained from the high temperature solution growth technique using Sn flux. Upon Co doping, the c-axis of the tetragonal unit cell decreases, while the a-axis shows a less significant variation. Pristine CaFe2As2 shows a combined spin-density-wave and structural transition near T = 166 K which gradually shifts to lower temperatures and splits with increasing Co-doping. Both transitions terminate abruptly at a critical Co-concentration of xc = 0.075. For x \geq 0.05, superconductivity appears at low temperatures with a maximum transition temperature TC of around 20 K. The superconducting volume fraction increases with Co concentration up to x = 0.09 followed by a gradual decrease with further increase of the doping level. The electronic phase diagram of Ca(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (0 \leq x \leq 0.2) series is constructed from the magnetization and electric resistivity data. We show that the low-temperature superconducting properties of Co-doped CaFe2As2 differ considerably from those of BaFe2As2 reported previously. These differences seem to be related to the extreme pressure sensitivity of CaFe2As2 relative to its Ba counterpart.

Quadrupolar correlations and deformation effect on two neutrino $\varepsilon β^{+}$ and $\varepsilon \varepsilon $ modes of $^{156}$Dy isotope

The two-neutrino positron double-$β$ decay modes of $^{156}$Dy isotope are studied in the Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov framework for the $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ transition. Theoretically calculated half-lives of electron-positron conversion and double-electron capture modes are presented. The effect of the quadrupolar deformation on nuclear transition matrix element $M_{2ν}$ is also investigated.

Towards all-optical optomechanics: An optical spring mirror

The dominant hurdle to the operation of optomechanical systems in the quantum regime is the coupling of the vibrating element to a thermal reservoir via mechanical supports. Here we propose a scheme that uses an optical spring to replace the mechanical support. We show that the resolved-sideband regime of cooling can be reached in a configuration using a high-reflectivity disk mirror held by an optical tweezer as one of the end-mirrors of a Fabry-Perot cavity. We find a final phonon occupation number of the trapped mirror ${\bar n}$= 0.14 for reasonable parameters, well within the quantum regime. This demonstrates the promise of dielectric disks attached to optical springs for the observation of quantum effects in macroscopic objects.

Critical current and vortex dynamics in single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$

We investigate the critical current density and vortex dynamics in single crystals of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$ ($x$ = 0.051, 0.056, 0.065, and 0.073). The samples exhibit different critical temperatures and superconducting phase fractions. We show that in contrast to their Ba-based counterpart, the crystals do not exhibit a second peak in the field dependence of magnetization. The calculated composition-dependent critical current density ($j_{\rm c}$) increases initially with Co doping, maximizing at $x$ = 0.065, and then decreases. This variation in $j_{\rm c}$ follows the superconducting phase fractions in this series. The calculated $j_{\rm c}$ shows strong temperature dependence, decreasing rapidly upon heating. Magnetic relaxation measurements imply a nonlogarithmic dependence on time. We find that the relaxation rate is large, reflecting weak characteristic pinning energy. The analysis of temperature- and field-dependent magnetic relaxation data suggests that vortex dynamics in these compounds is consistent with plastic creeping rather than the collective creep model, unlike other 122 pnictide superconductors. This difference may cause the absence of the second peak in the field dependent magnetization of Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_2$As$_2$.

Electromagnetically induced transparency in cold 85Rb atoms trapped in the ground hyperfine F = 2 state

We report electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in cold 85Rb atoms, trapped in the lower hyperfine level F = 2, of the ground state 5$^{2}S_{1/2}$ (Tiwari V B \textit{et al} 2008 {\it Phys. Rev.} A {\bf 78} 063421). Two steady state $Λ$-type systems of hyperfine energy levels are investigated using probe transitions into the levels F$^{\prime}$ = 2 and F$^{\prime}$ = 3 of the excited state 5$^{2}P_{3/2}$ in the presence of coupling transitions F = 3 $\to$ F$^{\prime}$ = 2 and F = 3 $\to$ F$^{\prime}$ = 3, respectively. The effects of uncoupled magnetic sublevel transitions and coupling field's Rabi frequency on the EIT signal from these systems are studied using a simple theoretical model.

Local antiferromagnetic correlations in the iron pnictide superconductors LaFeAsO{1-x}F{x} and Ca(Fe,Co)2As2 as seen via normal-state susceptibility

We have studied the interplay of magnetism and superconductivity in LaFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_x$ and Ca(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_x$)$_2$As$_2$. While antiferromagnetic spin density wave formation is suppressed and superconductivity evolves, all samples show a doping independent strong increase of the normal state susceptibility upon heating which appears a general feature of iron pnictides. The data provide evidence for robust local antiferromagnetic correlations persisting even in the superconducting regime of the phase diagram.

Vacancy defect positron lifetimes in strontium titanate

The results of positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy measurements on undoped, electron irradiated, and Nb doped SrTiO3 single crystals are reported. Perfect lattice and vacancy defect positron lifetimes were calculated using two different first-principles schemes. The Sr vacancy defect related positron lifetime was obtained from measurements on Nb doped, electron irradiated, and vacuum annealed samples. Undoped crystals showed a defect lifetime component dominated by trapping to Ti vacancy related defects.

Feshbach resonances in ultracold 85Rb-87Rb and 6Li-87Rb mixtures

We present an analysis of experimentally accessible magnetic Feshbach resonances in ultra-cold hetero-nuclear 85Rb-87Rb and 6Li-87Rb mixtures. Using recent experimental measurements of the triplet scattering lengths for 6Li-87Rb and 7Li-87Rb mixtures and Feshbach resonances for one combination of atomic states, we create model potential curves and fine tune them to reproduce the measured resonances and to predict the location of several experimentally relevant resonances in Li-Rb collisions. To model 85Rb-87Rb collisions, we use accurate Rb_2 potentials obtained previously from the analysis of experiments on 87Rb-87Rb collisions. We find resonances that occur at very low magnetic fields, below 10 G, which may be useful for entanglement generation in optical lattices or atom chip magnetic traps.

Potassium fluoride doped LaOFeAs multiband superconductors: Evidence for extremely high upper critical field

We describe a new methodology of synthesizing the oxypnictide superconductors with potassium fluoride as a source as a source of fluorine instead of LaF3. This route also allows the substitution of potassium at lanthanum sites which leads to an increase in the upper critical field as would be expected for a multiband superconductor. We also report the highest reported Tc onset of 28.5K and highest upper critical field in these superconductors.

Magnetoresistance behavior of a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy: Ni_1.75Mn_1.25Ga

A negative-positive-negative switching behavior of magnetoresistance (MR) with temperature is observed in a ferromagnetic shape memory alloy Ni_1.75Mn_1.25Ga. In the austenitic phase between 300 and 120 K, MR is negative due to s-d scattering. Curiously, below 120K MR is positive, while at still lower temperatures in the martensitic phase, MR is negative again. The positive MR cannot be explained by Lorentz contribution and is related to a magnetic transition. Evidence for this is obtained from ab initio density functional theory, a decrease in magnetization and resistivity upturn at 120 K. Theory shows that a ferrimagnetic state with anti-ferromagnetic alignment between the local magnetic moments of the Mn atoms is the energetically favoured ground state. In the martensitic phase, there are two competing factors that govern the MR behavior: a dominant negative trend up to the saturation field due to the decrease of electron scattering at twin and domain boundaries; and a weaker positive trend due to the ferrimagnetic nature of the magnetic state. MR exhibits a hysteresis between heating and cooling that is related to the first order nature of the martensitic phase transition.

Coupling nanomechanical cantilevers to dipolar molecules

We investigate the coupling of a nanomechanical oscillator in the quantum regime with molecular (electric) dipoles. We find theoretically that the cantilever can produce single-mode squeezing of the center-of-mass motion of an isolated trapped molecule and two-mode squeezing of the phonons of an array of molecules. This work opens up the possibility of manipulating dipolar crystals, which have been recently proposed as quantum memory, and more generally, is indicative of the promise of nanoscale cantilevers for the quantum detection and control of atomic and molecular systems.

Nuclear deformation and the two neutrino double-βdecay in ^{124,126}Xe,^{128,130}Te, ^{130,132}Ba and ^{150}Nd isotopes

The two neutrino double beta decay of $^{124,126}$Xe,$^{128,130}$Te, $ ^{130,132}$Ba and $^{150}$Nd isotopes is studied in the Projected Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (PHFB) model. Theoretical 2$ν$ $β^{-}β^{-}$ half-lives of $^{128,130}$Te, and $^{150}$Nd isotopes, and 2$νβ^{+}β^{+}$, 2$ν$ $β^{+}EC$ and 2$ν$ $ECEC$ for $ ^{124,126}$Xe and $^{130,132}$Ba nuclei are presented. Calculated quadrupolar transition probabilities B(E2: $0^+\to 2^+$), static quadrupole moments and $g$ factors in the parent and daughter nuclei reproduce the experimental information, validating the reliability of the model wave functions. The anticorrelation between nuclear deformation and the nuclear transition matrix element $M_{2ν} $ is confirmed.

Matrix product decomposition and classical simulation of quantum dynamics in the presence of a symmetry

We propose a refined matrix product state representation for many-body quantum states that are invariant under SU(2) transformations, and indicate how to extend the time-evolving block decimation (TEBD) algorithm in order to simulate time evolution in an SU(2) invariant system. The resulting algorithm is tested in a critical quantum spin chain and shown to be significantly more efficient than the standard TEBD.

The $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ positron double-$β$ decay with emission of two neutrinos in the nuclei $^{96}$Ru, $^{102}$Pd, $^{106}$Cd and $^{108}$Cd

Theoretical results for %the $0^{+}\to 0^{+}$ positron double-$β$ decay with emission of two neutrinos in the nuclei $^{96}$Ru, $^{102}$Pd, $^{106}$Cd and $^{108}$Cd are presented. The study employs the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model to obtain the wave functions of the parent and daughter nuclei, in conjunction with the summation method to estimate the double beta decay nuclear matrix elements. The reliability of the intrinsic wave functions of $^{96,102}$Ru, $% ^{96}$Mo, $^{102,106,108}$Pd and $^{106,108}$Cd nuclei are tested by comparing the theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties with the available experimental data. Calculated half-lives $T_{1/2}^{2ν}$ of $% ^{96}$Ru, $^{102}$Pd, $^{106}$Cd and $^{108}$Cd nuclei for 2$ν$ $β^{+}β^{+}$, 2$ν$ $β^{+}EC$ and 2$ν$ $ECEC$ modes are presented. The effect of deformation on the nuclear transition matrix element $M_{2ν}$ is also studied.
