Finite temperature phases and excitations of bosons on a square lattice: A cluster mean field study

We study the finite temperature phases and collective excitations of hardcore as well as softcore bosons on a square lattice with nearest and next nearest neighbor interactions, focusing on the formation of various types of supersolid (SS) phases and their stability under thermal fluctuations. The interplay between the on-site, nearest, and next nearest neighbor interactions leads to various density ordering and structural transitions, which we have plotted out. Thermodynamic properties and phase diagrams are obtained by cluster mean field theory at finite temperatures, which includes quantum effects systematically, and they are compared with the single-site mean field results. We investigate the melting process of the SS phase to normal fluid (NF), which can occur in at least two steps due to the presence of two competing orders in the SS. A tetra-critical point exists at finite temperature and exhibits intriguing behavior, which is analyzed for different regimes of interactions. The phase diagrams reveal the different pathways of the thermal transition of SSs to the NF phase, for different interaction regimes, which can be accessible by thermal quench protocols used in recent experiments. We show how the phases and the transitions between them can be identified from the characteristic features of the excitation spectrum. We analyze the appearance of a low-energy gapped mode apart from the gapless sound mode in the SS phase, which is analogous to the gapped mode recently studied for dipolar SS phases. Finally, we discuss the relevance of the results of the present work in the context of ongoing experiments on ultracold atomic gases and newly observed SS phases.

On Zero-Sum Two Person Perfect Information Semi-Markov Games

A zero-sum two-person Perfect Information Semi-Markov game (PISMG) under limiting ratio average payoff has a value and both the maximiser and the minimiser have optimal pure semi-stationary strategies. We arrive at the result by first fixing an arbitrary initial state and forming the matrix of undiscounted payoffs corresponding to each pair of pure stationary strategies of the two players and proving that this matrix has a pure saddle point.

On Zero-Sum Two Person Perfect Information Stochastic Games

A zero-sum two person Perfect Information Stochastic game (PISG) under limiting average payoff has a value and both the maximiser and the minimiser have optimal pure stationary strategies. Firstly we form the matrix of undiscounted payoffs corresponding to each pair of pure stationary strategies (for each initial state) of the two players and prove that this matrix has a pure saddle point. Then by using the results by Derman [1] we prove the existence of optimal pure stationary strategy pair of the players. A crude but finite step algorithm is given to compute such an optimal pure stationary strategy pair of the players.

High critical field superconductivity at ambient pressure in MoB$_2$ stabilized in the P6/mmm structure via Nb substitution

Recently it was discovered that, under elevated pressures, MoB$_2$ exhibits superconductivity at a critical temperature, $T_c$, as high as 32 K. The superconductivity appears to develop following a pressure-induced structural transition from the ambient pressure R$\bar{3}$m structure to an MgB$_2$-like P6/mmm structure. This suggests that remarkably high $T_c$ values among diborides are not restricted to MgB$_2$ as previously appeared to be the case, and that similarly high $T_c$ values may occur in other diborides if they can be coerced into the MgB$_2$ structure. In this paper, we show that density functional theory calculations indicate that phonon free energy stabilizes the P6/mmm structure over the R$\bar{3}$m at high temperatures across the Nb$_{1-x}$Mo$_x$B$_2$ series. X-ray diffraction confirms that the synthesized Nb-substituted MoB$_2$ adopts the MgB$_2$ crystal structure. High magnetic field electrical resistivity measurements and specific heat measurements demonstrate that Nb$_{1-x}$Mo$_x$B$_2$ exhibits superconductivity with $T_c$ as high as 8 K and critical fields approaching 6 T.

Creating superconductivity in WB2 through pressure-induced metastable planar defects

High-pressure electrical resistivity measurements reveal that the mechanical deformation of ultra-hard WB2 during compression induces superconductivity above 50 GPa with a maximum superconducting critical temperature, Tc of 17 K at 90 GPa. Upon further compression up to 190 GPa, the Tc gradually decreases. Theoretical calculations show that electron-phonon mediated superconductivity originates from the formation of metastable stacking faults and twin boundaries that exhibit a local structure resembling MgB2} (hP3, space group 191, prototype AlB2). Synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements up to 145 GPa} show that the ambient pressure hP12 structure (space group 194, prototype WB2) continues to persist to this pressure, consistent with the formation of the planar defects above 50 GPa. The abrupt appearance of superconductivity under pressure does not coincide with a structural transition but instead with the formation and percolation of mechanically-induced stacking faults and twin boundaries. The results identify an alternate route for designing superconducting materials.

Hitting two BSM particles with one lepton-jet: search for a top partner decaying to a dark photon, resulting in a lepton-jet

A maverick top partner model, decaying to a dark photon was suggested. The dark photon decays to two overlapping electrons for dark photon masses of $\approx 100$ GeV, and results in a so-called lepton-jet. The event includes a top quark as well, which results in events with two boosted objects, one heavy and the other light. We propose a search strategy exploiting the unique signal topology. We show that for a set of kinematic selections, both in hadronic and leptonic decay channel of the SM top quark, almost all background can be eliminated, leaving enough signal events up to top partner mass of about 3 TeV for the search to be viable at the LHC.

Quantum transitions, ergodicity, and quantum scars in the coupled top model

We consider an interacting collective spin model known as coupled top (CT), exhibiting a rich variety of phenomena related to quantum transitions, ergodicity, and formation of quantum scars, discussed in [Phys. Rev. E 102, 020101(R) (2020)]. In this work, we present a detailed analysis of the different type of transitions in CT model, and find their connection with the underlying collective spin dynamics. Apart from the quantum scarring phenomena, we also identify another source of deviation from ergodicity due to the presence of non-ergodic multifractal states. The degree of ergodicity of the eigenstates across the energy band is quantified from the relative entanglement entropy as well as multifractal dimensions, which can be probed from non-equilibrium dynamics. Finally, we discuss the detection of non-ergodic behavior and different types of quantum scars using `out-of-time-order correlators', which has relevance in the recent experiments.

Beam power scale-up in MEMS based multi-beam ion accelerators

We report on the development of multi-beam RF linear ion accelerators that are formed from stacks of low cost wafers and describe the status of beam power scale-up using an array of 120 beams. The total argon ion current extracted from the 120-beamlet extraction column was 0.5 mA. The measured energy gain in each RF gap reached as high as 7.25 keV. We present a path of using this technology to achieve ion currents >1 mA and ion energies >100 keV for applications in materials processing.

Chaos and quantum scars in Bose-Josephson junction coupled to a bosonic mode

We consider a model describing Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to a single bosonic mode exhibiting quantum phase transition (QPT). Onset of chaos above QPT is observed from semiclassical dynamics as well from spectral statistics. Based on entanglement entropy we analyze the ergodic behavior of eigenstates with increasing energy density which also reveals the influence of dynamical steady state known as $π$-mode on it. We identify the imprint of unstable $π$-oscillation as many body quantum scar (MBQS), which leads to the deviation from ergodicity and quantify the degree of scarring. Persistence of phase coherence in nonequilibrium dynamics of such initial state corresponding to the $π$-mode is an observable signature of MBQS which has relevance in experiments on BJJ.

Chaos and quantum scars in a coupled top model

We consider a coupled top model describing two interacting large spins, which is studied semiclassically as well as quantum mechanically. This model exhibits variety of interesting phenomena such as quantum phase transition (QPT), dynamical transition and excited state quantum phase transitions above a critical coupling strength. Both classical dynamics and entanglement entropy reveals ergodic behavior at the center of energy density band for an intermediate range of coupling strength above QPT, where the level spacing distribution changes from Poissonian to Wigner-Dyson statistics. Interestingly, in this model we identify quantum scars as reminiscence of unstable collective dynamics even in presence of interaction. Statistical properties of such scarred states deviate from ergodic limit corresponding to random matrix theory and violate Berry's conjecture. In contrast to ergodic evolution, oscillatory behavior in dynamics of unequal time commutator and survival probability is observed as dynamical signature of quantum scar, which can be relevant for its detection.

Thermalization in parametrically driven coupled oscillators

We consider a system of two coupled oscillators one of which is driven parametrically and investigate both classical and quantum dynamics within Floquet description. Characteristic changes in the time evolution of the quantum fluctuations are observed for dynamically stable and unstable regions. Dynamical instability generated by the parametrically driven oscillator leads to infinite temperature thermalization of the undriven oscillator which is evident from the equi-partitioning of energy, reduced density matrix and saturation of entanglement entropy. We also confirm that the classical Lyapunov exponent is correctly captured from the growth rate of `unequal time commutator' of dynamical variables which indicates thermalization stems from the instability in quantum system.

Phases and collective modes of bosons in a triangular lattice at finite temperature: A cluster mean field study

Motivated by the realization of Bose-Einstein condensates (BEC) in non-cubic lattices, in this work we study the phases and collective excitation of bosons with nearest neighbor interaction in a triangular lattice at finite temperature, using mean field (MF) and cluster mean field (CMF) theory. We compute the finite temperature phase diagram both for hardcore and softcore bosons, as well analyze the effect of correlation arising due to lattice frustration and interaction systematically using CMF method. A semi-analytic estimate of the transition temperatures between different phases are derived within the framework of MF Landau theory, particularly for hardcore bosons. Apart from the usual phases such as density waves (DW) and superfluid (SF), we also characterize different supersolids (SS). These phases and their transitions at finite temperature are identified from the collective modes. The low lying excitations, particularly Goldstone and Higgs modes of the supersolid can be detected in the ongoing cold atom experiments.

On Semimonotone Star Matrices and Linear Complementarity Problem

In this article, we introduce the class of semimonotone star ($E_0^s$) matrices. We establish the importance of the class of $E_0^s$-matrices in the context of complementarity theory. We show that the principal pivot transform of $E_0^s$-matrix is not necessarily $E_0^s$ in general. However, we prove that $\tilde{E_0^s}$-matrices, a subclass of the $E_0^s$-matrices with some additional conditions, is in $E_0^f$ by showing this class is in $P_0.$ We prove that LCP$(q, A)$ can be processable by Lemke's algorithm if $A\in \tilde{E_0^s}\cap P_0.$ We find some conditions for which the solution set of LCP$(q, A)$ is bounded and stable under the $\tilde{E^s_0}$-property. We propose an algorithm based on an interior point method to solve LCP$(q, A)$ given $A \in \tilde{E^{s}_{0}}.$

Dissipative Bose-Josephson junction coupled to bosonic baths

We investigate the effect of dissipation in a Bose-Josephson junction (BJJ) coupled to bath of bosons at two sites. Apart from the dynamical transition due to repulsive interactions, the BJJ undergoes a quantum phase transition by increasing the coupling strength with the bath modes. We analyze this system by mapping to an equivalent spin model coupled to the bosonic modes. The excitation energies and fluctuation of number imbalance are obtained within Holstein-Primakoff approximation, which exhibit vanishing of energy gap and enhanced quantum fluctuations at the critical coupling. We study the dynamics of BJJ using time dependent variational method and analyze stability of different types of steady states. As a special case we study in details the phase space dynamics of BJJ coupled to a single mode, which reveals diffusive and incoherent behaviour with increasing coupling to the bath mode. The dynamical steady states corresponding to the Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state become unstable in the region where their oscillation frequencies are in resonance with the bath modes. We investigate the time evolution of number imbalance and relative phase in presence of Ohmic bath with Gaussian noise to incorporate thermal fluctuations. Apart from damping of Josephson oscillations and transition to symmetry broken state for strong coupling we observe decay of Pi-oscillation and self-trapped state to the ground state as a result of dissipation. Variation of phase fluctuation with temperature of the bath shows similar behaviour as observed in experiment. Finally we discuss the experimental setup to study the observable effects of dissipation in BJJ.

One-dimensional quasicrystals with power-law hopping

One-dimensional quasi-periodic systems with power-law hopping, $1/r^a$, differ from both the standard Aubry-Azbel-Harper (AAH) model and from power-law systems with uncorrelated disorder. Whereas in the AAH model all single-particle states undergo a transition from ergodic to localized at a critical quasi-disorder strength, short-range power-law hops with $a>1$ can result in mobility edges. Interestingly, there is no localization for long-range hops with $a\leq 1$, in contrast to the case of uncorrelated disorder. Systems with long-range hops are rather characterized by ergodic-to-multifractal edges and a phase transition from ergodic to multifractal (extended but non ergodic) states. We show that both mobility and ergodic-to-multifractal edges may be clearly revealed in experiments on expansion dynamics.

A finite temperature study of ideal quantum gases in the presence of one dimensional quasi-periodic potential

We study the thermodynamics of ideal Bose gas as well as the transport properties of non interacting bosons and fermions in a one dimensional quasi-periodic potential, namely Aubry-André (AA) model at finite temperature. For bosons in finite size systems, the effect of quasi-periodic potential on the crossover phenomena corresponding to Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC), superfluidity and localization phenomena at finite temperatures are investigated. From the ground state number fluctuation we calculate the crossover temperature of BEC which exhibits a non monotonic behavior with the strength of AA potential and vanishes at the self-dual critical point following power law. Appropriate rescaling of the crossover temperatures reveals universal behavior which is studied for different quasi-periodicity of the AA model. Finally, we study the temperature and flux dependence of the persistent current of fermions in presence of a quasi-periodic potential to identify the localization at the Fermi energy from the decay of the current.

Raman spectroscopic investigations of carbon nanowalls

Carbon nanowall (CNW) is a two dimensional graphitic nanostructures with many potential applications like field emission, catalyst support for fuel cell and negative electrode for batteries. CNWs were grown here on Si substrates by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition using N2/CH4 plasma at 6500C temperature. Deposited CNWs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. Results obtained by Raman spectroscopic techniques are extensively studied. It shows existence of D, G, D/, G/, and D+D/ bands. These bands are analyzed to obtain detail structural information about CNWs. Analysis of each Raman band is done using a Lorentzian fit and their significance have been explained from the perspectives of CNWs. Different bands appeared in Raman spectra of CNWs have further been compared with of the same bands of graphene, single-wall and multi-wall nanotubes. Similarities and differences of CNWs with these carbon nanostructures have been pointed out during analysis. Our detailed analysis of the experimental results shows that CNWs have close similarity to turbostratic graphite i.e. with substantial amount of defects present in the graphene sheets stacked over one another.

Actinide Decontamination by Microwave Atmospheric Pressure Plasma jet: A Systematic Study Supported by Optical Emission Spectroscopy

A single electrode microwave based atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ) had been developed, characterized and applied for decontamination of Pu based synthetic radioactive waste. Argon plasma with small amount of CF4 and O2 was used for this purpose. The device was initially characterized by optical emission spectroscopy (OES) to determine its operational regime and used on Ta, a known surrogate of Pu for testing its efficacy in etching. Parametric optimization studies had been conducted thereafter on solid radioactive wastes of Pu and it was seen that presence of oxygen in plasma plays a crucial role in efficient removal of contamination. A scaled up multi-electrode version of this device was later designed and employed inside the glove box for similar studies. It was seen that ~ 92% decontamination could be achieved under optimized condition with both the devices and the scaled up APPJ device reduced operation time by 50%.
