Signature of Chaos and Delocalization in a Periodically Driven Many Body System : An Out-of-Time-Order Correlation Study

We study out-of-time-order correlation (OTOC) for one-dimensional periodically driven hardcore bosons in the presence of Aubry-André (AA) potential and show that both the spectral properties and the saturation values of OTOC in the steady state of these driven systems provide a clear distinction between the localized and delocalized phases of these models. Our results, obtained via exact numerical diagonalization of these boson chains, thus indicate that OTOC can provide a signature of drive induced delocalization even for systems which do not have a well defined semiclassical (and/or large N) limit. We demonstrate the presence of such signature by analyzing two different drive protocols for hardcore bosons chains leading to distinct physical phenomena and discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Drive Induced Delocalization in Aubry-André Model

Motivated by the recent experiment by Bordia et al [Nat. Phys. 13, 460 (2017)], we study single particle delocalization phenomena of Aubry-André (AA) model subjected to periodic drives. In two distinct cases we construct an equivalent classical description to illustrate that the drive induced delocalization phenomena stems from an instability and onset of chaos in the underlying dynamics. In the first case we analyze the delocalization and the thermalization in a time modulated AA potential with respect to driving frequency and demonstrate that there exists a threshold value of the amplitude of the drive. In the next example, we show that the periodic modulation of the hopping amplitude leads to an unusual effect on delocalization with a non-monotonic dependence on the driving frequency. Within a window of such driving frequency a delocalized Floquet band with mobility edge appears, exhibiting multifractality in the spectrum as well as in the Floquet eigenfunctions. Finally, we explore the effect of interaction and discuss how the results of the present analysis can be tested experimentally.

Bosons with incommensurate potential and spin-orbit coupling

We chart out the phase diagram of ultracold `spin-half' bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of Aubry-André (AA) potential and with spin-orbit (SO) and Raman couplings investigating the transition from superfluid (SF) to localized phases and the existence of density wave phase for nearest-neighbor interaction (NNI). We show that the presence of SO coupling and AA potential leads to a novel spin-split momentum distribution of the bosons in the localized phase near the boundary with the SF phase, which can act as a signature of such a transition. We also obtain the level statistics of the bosons in the superfluid phase with finite NNI and demonstrate its change from Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE) to Gaussian Orthogonal Ensemble (GOE) as a function of the Raman coupling. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager on AstroSat

The Cadmium Zinc Telluride Imager (CZTI) is a high energy, wide-field imaging instrument on AstroSat. CZT's namesake Cadmium Zinc Telluride detectors cover an energy range from 20 keV to > 200 keV, with 11% energy resolution at 60 keV. The coded aperture mask attains an angular resolution of 17' over a 4.6 deg x 4.6 deg (FWHM) field of view. CZTI functions as an open detector above 100 keV, continuously sensitive to GRBs and other transients in about 30% of the sky. The pixellated detectors are sensitive to polarisation above ~100 keV, with exciting possibilities for polarisation studies of transients and bright persistent sources. In this paper, we provide details of the complete CZTI instrument, detectors, coded aperture mask, mechanical and electronic configuration, as well as data and products.

Quantum Signature of Chaos and Thermalization in Kicked Dicke Model

We study the quantum dynamics of the kicked Dicke model(KDM) in terms of the Floquet operator and analyze the connection between the chaos and thermalization in this context. The Hamiltonian map is constructed by taking the classical limit of the Heisenberg equation of motion suitably to study the corresponding phase space dynamics which shows a crossover from regular to chaotic motion by tuning the kicking strength. The fixed point analysis and calculation of the Lyapunov exponent(LE) provides us a complete picture of the onset of chaos in phase space dynamics. We carry out the spectral analysis of the Floquet operator which include the calculation of quasienergy spacing distribution, structural entropy and show the correspondence to the random matrix theory in the chaotic regime. Finally, we analyze the thermodynamics and statistical properties of the bosonic sector as well as the spin sector and discuss how such periodically kicked system relaxes to a thermalized state in accordance with the laws of statistical mechanics. We introduce the notion of an effective temperature and show that a microcanonical picture is emerging out in the thermodynamic limit indicating the thermalization occurring in such system.

Phases, collective modes, and non-equilibrium dynamics of dissipative Rydberg atoms

We use a density matrix formalism to study the equilibrium phases and non-equilibrium dynamics of a system of dissipative Rydberg atoms in an optical lattice within mean-field theory. We provide equations for the fixed points of the density matrix evolution for atoms with infinite on-site repulsion and analyze these equations to obtain their Mott insulator- superfluid (MI-SF) phase boundary. A stability analysis around these fixed points provides us with the excitation spectrum of the atoms both in the MI and SF phases. We study the nature of the MI-SF critical point in the presence of finite dissipation of Rydberg excitations, discuss the fate of the superfluidity of the atoms in the presence of such dissipation in the weak-coupling limit using a coherent state representation of the density matrix, and extend our analysis to Rydberg atoms with finite on-site interaction via numerical solution of the density matrix equations. Finally, we vary the boson (atom) hopping parameter $J$ and the dissipation parameter $Γ$ according to a linear ramp protocol. We study the evolution of entropy of the system following such a ramp and show that the deviation of the entropy from its steady state value for the latter protocol exhibits power-law behavior as a function of the ramp time. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.

Quantum phases of hardcore bosons in two coupled chains: A density matrix renormalization group study

We consider hardcore bosons in two coupled chain of one dimensional lattices at half filling with repulsive intra-chain interaction and inter-chain attraction. This can be mapped on to a coupled chain of spin-1/2 XXZ model with inter chain ferromagnetic coupling. We investigate various phases of hardcore bosons (and related spin model) at zero temperature by density matrix renormalization group method. Apart from the usual superfluid and density wave phases, pairing of inter chain bosons leads to the formation of novel phases like pair-superfluid and density wave of strongly bound pairs. We discuss the possible experimental realization of such correlated phases in the context of cold dipolar gas.

Localization of weakly interacting Bose gas in quasiperiodic potential

We study the localization properties of weakly interacting Bose gas in a quasiperiodic potential commonly known as Aubry-André model. Effect of interaction on localization is investigated by computing the `superfluid fraction' and `inverse participation ratio'. For interacting Bosons the inverse participation ratio increases very slowly after the localization transition due to `multisite localization' of the wave function. We also study the localization in Aubry-André model using an alternative approach of classical dynamical map, where the localization is manifested by chaotic classical dynamics. For weakly interacting Bose gas, Bogoliubov quasiparticle spectrum and condensate fraction are calculated in order to study the loss of coherence with increasing disorder strength. Finally we discuss the effect of trapping potential on localization of matter wave.

Effect of spin-orbit interaction on the critical temperature of an ideal Bose gas

We consider Bose-Einstein condensation of an ideal bose gas with an equal mixture of `Rashba' and `Dresselhaus' spin-orbit interactions and study its effect on the critical temperature. In uniform bose gas a `cusp' and a sharp drop in the critical temperature occurs due to the change in the density of states at a critical Raman coupling where the degeneracy of the ground states is lifted. Relative drop in the critical temperature depends on the diluteness of the gas as well as on the spin-orbit coupling strength. In the presence of a harmonic trap, the cusp in the critical temperature smoothened out and a minimum appears. Both the drop in the critical temperature and lifting of `quasi-degeneracy' of the ground states exhibit crossover phenomena which is controlled by the trap frequency. By considering a 'Dicke' like model we extend our calculation to bosons with large spin and observe a similar minimum in the critical temperature near the critical Raman frequency, which becomes deeper for larger spin. Finally in the limit of infinite spin, the critical temperature vanishes at the critical frequency, which is a manifestation of Dicke type quantum phase transition.

Phases and collective modes of Rydberg atoms in an optical lattice

We chart out the possible phases of laser driven Rydberg atoms in the presence of a hypercubic optical lattice. We define a pseudospin degree of freedom whose up(down) components correspond to the excited(ground) states of the Rydberg atoms and use them to demonstrate the realization of a canted Ising antiferromagnetic (CIAF) Mott phase of the atoms in these systems. We also show that on lowering the lattice depth, the quantum melting of the CIAF and density-wave (DW) Mott states (which are also realized in these systems) leads to supersolid (SS) phases of the atoms. We provide analytical expressions for the phase boundaries and collective excitations of these phases in the hardcore limit within mean-field theory and discuss possible experiments to test our theory.

Quantum dynamics and macroscopic quantum tunneling of two weakly coupled condensates

We study the quantum dynamics of a Bose Josephson junction(BJJ) made up of two coupled Bose-Einstein condensates. Apart from the usual ac Josephson oscillations, two different dynamical states of BJJ can be observed by tuning the inter-particle interaction strength, which are known as '$π$-oscillation' with relative phase $π$ between the condensates and 'macroscopic self-trapped' (MST) state with finite number imbalance. By choosing appropiate intial state we study above dynamical branches quantum mechanically and compare with classical dynamics. The stability region of the '$π$-oscillation' is separated from that of 'MST' state at a critical coupling strength. Also a significant change in the energy spectrum takes place above the critical coupling strength, and pairs of (quasi)-degenerate excited states appear. The original model of BJJ can be mapped on to a simple Hamiltonian describing quantum particle in an 'effective potential' with an effective Planck constant. Different dynamical states and degenerate excited states in the energy spectrum can be understood in this 'effective potential' approach. Also possible novel quantum phenomena like 'macroscopic quantum tunneling'(MQT) become evident from the simple picture of 'effective potential'. We study decay of metastable '$π$-oscillation' by MQT through potential barrier. The doubly degenerate excited states in the energy spectrum are associated with the classically degenerate MST states with equal and opposite number imbalance. We calculate the energy splitting between these quasi-degenerate excited states due to MQT of the condensate between classically degenerate MST states.

Absence of arsenate in DNA from arsenate-grown GFAJ-1 cells

A strain of Halomonas bacteria, GFAJ-1, has been reported to be able to use arsenate as a nutrient when phosphate is limiting, and to specifically incorporate arsenic into its DNA in place of phosphorus. However, we have found that arsenate does not contribute to growth of GFAJ-1 when phosphate is limiting and that DNA purified from cells grown with limiting phosphate and abundant arsenate does not exhibit the spontaneous hydrolysis expected of arsenate ester bonds. Furthermore, mass spectrometry showed that this DNA contains only trace amounts of free arsenate and no detectable covalently bound arsenate.

Strong quantum violation of the gravitational weak equivalence principle by a non-Gaussian wave-packet

The weak equivalence principle of gravity is examined at the quantum level in two ways. First, the position detection probabilities of particles described by a non-Gaussian wave-packet projected upwards against gravity around the classical turning point and also around the point of initial projection are calculated. These probabilities exhibit mass-dependence at both these points, thereby reflecting the quantum violation of the weak equivalence principle. Secondly, the mean arrival time of freely falling particles is calculated using the quantum probability current, which also turns out to be mass dependent. Such a mass-dependence is shown to be enhanced by increasing the non-Gaussianity parameter of the wave packet, thus signifying a stronger violation of the weak equivalence principle through a greater departure from Gaussianity of the initial wave packet. The mass-dependence of both the position detection probabilities and the mean arrival time vanish in the limit of large mass. Thus, compatibility between the weak equivalence principle and quantum mechanics is recovered in the macroscopic limit of the latter. A selection of Bohm trajectories is exhibited to illustrate these features in the free fall case.

Superfluid-Insulator transition of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field

We study the Mott insulator-superfluid transition of ultracold bosonic atoms in a two-dimensional square optical lattice in the presence of a synthetic magnetic field with p/q (p and q being co-prime integers) flux quanta passing through each lattice plaquette. We show that on approach to the transition from the Mott side, the momentum distribution of the bosons exhibits q precursor peaks within the first magnetic Brillouin zone. We also provide an effective theory for the transition and show that it involves q interacting boson fields. We construct, from a mean-field analysis of this effective theory, the superfluid ground states near the transition and compute, for q=2,3, both the gapped and the gapless collective modes of these states. We suggest experiments to test our theory.

Dissipative Quantum Systems and the Heat Capacity Enigma

We present a detailed study of the quantum dissipative dynamics of a charged particle in a magnetic field. Our focus of attention is the effect of dissipation on the low- and high-temperature behavior of the specific heat at constant volume. After providing a brief overview of two distinct approaches to the statistical mechanics of dissipative quantum systems, viz., the ensemble approach of Gibbs and the quantum Brownian motion approach due to Einstein, we present exact analyses of the specific heat. While the low-temperature expressions for the specific heat, based on the two approaches, are in conformity with power-law temperature-dependence, predicted by the third law of thermodynamics, and the high-temperature expressions are in agreement with the classical equipartition theorem, there are surprising differences between the dependencies of the specific heat on different parameters in the theory, when calculations are done from these two distinct methods. In particular, we find puzzling influences of boundary-confinement and the bath-induced spectral cutoff frequency. Further, when it comes to the issue of approach to equilibrium, based on the Einstein method, the way the asymptotic limit (time going to infinity) is taken, seems to assume significance.

Dark energy from quantum wave function collapse of dark matter

Dynamical wave function collapse models entail the continuous liberation of a specified rate of energy arising from the interaction of a fluctuating scalar field with the matter wave function. We consider the wave function collapse process for the constituents of dark matter in our universe. Beginning from a particular early era of the universe chosen from physical considerations, the rate of the associated energy liberation is integrated to yield the requisite magnitude of dark energy around the era of galaxy formation. Further, the equation of state for the liberated energy approaches $w \to -1$ asymptotically, providing a mechanism to generate the present acceleration of the universe.

Dissipative dynamics of a Harmonic Oscillator : A non-perturbative approach

Starting from a microscopic theory, we derive a master equation for a harmonic oscillator coupled to a bath of non-interacting oscillators. We follow a non-perturbative approach, proposed earlier by us for the free Brownian particle. The diffusion constants are calculated analytically and the positivity of the Master Equation is shown to hold above a critical temperature. We compare the long time behaviour of the average kinetic and potential energies with known thermodynamic results. In the limit of vainishing oscillator frequency of the system, we recover the results of the free Brownian particle.

Phases and collective modes of hardcore Bose-Fermi mixture in an optical lattice

We obtain the phase diagram of a Bose-Fermi mixture of hardcore spinless Bosons and spin-polarized Fermions with nearest neighbor intra-species interaction and on-site inter-species repulsion in an optical lattice at half-filling using a slave-boson mean-field theory. We show that such a system can have four possible phases which are a) supersolid Bosons coexisting with Fermions in the Mott state, b) Mott state of Bosons coexisting with Fermions in a metallic or charge-density wave state, c) a metallic Fermionic state coexisting with superfluid phase of Bosons, and d) Mott insulating state of Fermions and Bosons. We chart out the phase diagram of the system and provide analytical expressions for the phase boundaries within mean-field theory. We demonstrate that the transition between these phases are generically first order with the exception of that between the supersolid and the Mott states which is a continuous quantum phase transition. We also obtain the low-energy collective excitations of the system in these phases. Finally, we study the particle-hole excitations in the Mott insulating phase and use it to determine the dynamical critical exponent $z$ for the supersolid-Mott insulator transition. We discuss experiments which can test our theory.
