Negative Refraction and Left-handed electromagnetism in Microwave Photonic Crystals

We demonstrate negative refraction of microwaves in metallic photonic crystals. The spectral response of the photonic crystal, which manifests both positive and negative refraction, is in complete agreement with band-structure calculations and numerical simulations. The negative refraction observed corresponds to left-handed electromagnetism and arises due to the dispersion characteristics of waves in a periodic medium. This mechanism for negative refraction is different from that in metamaterials.

Recovery of transverse velocities of steadily rotating patterns in flat galaxies

The transverse velocities of steadily rotating, non--axisymmetric patterns in flat galaxies may be determined by a purely kinematical method, using two dimensional maps of a tracer surface brightness and radial current density. The data--maps could be viewed as the zeroth and first velocity moments of the line--of--sight velocity distribution, which is the natural output of integral--field spectrographs. Our method is closely related to the Tremaine--Weinberg method of estimating pattern speeds of steadily rotating patterns, when the tracer surface brightness satisfies a source--free continuity equation. We prove that, under identical assumptions about the pattern, two dimensional maps may be used to recover not just one number (the pattern speed), but the full vector field of tracer flow in the disc plane. We illustrate the recovery process by applying it to simulated data, and test its robustness by including the effects of noise.

Fractal Weyl laws for chaotic open systems

We present a result relating the density of quantum resonances for an open chaotic system to the fractal dimension of the associated classical repeller. The result is supported by numerical computation of the resonances of the system of n disks on a plane. The result generalizes the Weyl law for the density of states of a closed system to chaotic open systems.

Isospectrality in Chaotic Billiards

We consider a modification of isospectral cavities whereby the classical dynamics changes from pseudointegrable to chaotic. We construct an example where we can prove that isospectrality is retained. We then demonstrate this explicitly in microwave resonators.

The superconducting gap of \QTR{em}{in situ} $MgB_{2}$ thin films by microwave surface impedance measurements

Precision measurements of the microwave surface resistance $R_{s}$ of in situ $MgB_{2}$ films directly reveal an exponential behavior of $R_{s}$ at low temperature indicating a fully-gapped order parameter. The entire temperature dependence of $R_{s}$ is well described by a Mattis-Bardeen formalism but with a small gap ratio of $Δ(0)/kT_{c}=0.72$, corresponding to $Δ(0)=1.9meV$.

Sinai billiards, Ruelle zeta-functions and Ruelle resonances: microwave experiments

We discuss the impact of recent developments in the theory of chaotic dynamical systems, particularly the results of Sinai and Ruelle, on microwave experiments designed to study quantum chaos. The properties of closed Sinai billiard microwave cavities are discussed in terms of universal predictions from random matrix theory, as well as periodic orbit contributions which manifest as `scars' in eigenfunctions. The semiclassical and classical Ruelle zeta-functions lead to quantum and classical resonances, both of which are observed in microwave experiments on n-disk hyperbolic billiards.

From chaos to disorder: Statistics of the eigenfunctions of microwave cavities

We study the statistics of the experimental eigenfunctions of chaotic and disordered microwave billiards in terms of the moments of their spatial distributions, such as the Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR) and density-density auto-correlation. A path from chaos to disorder is described in terms of increasing IPR. In the chaotic, ballistic limit, the data correspond well with universal results from random matrix theory. Deviations from universal distributions are observed due to disorder induced localization, and for the weakly disordered case the data are well-described by including finite conductance and mean free path contributions in the framework of nonlinear sigma models of supersymetry.

Dynamical Modeling of the Stellar Nucleus of M31

We present stellar dynamical models of the lopsided, double-peaked nucleus of M31, derived from Hubble Space Telescope (HST) photometry. A Schwarzscild-type method, in conjunction with Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, was employed to construct steadily rotating, hot, stellar disks. The stars orbit a massive dark object, on prograde and retrograde quasi-periodic loop orbits. Our results support Tremaine's eccentric disk model, extended to include a more massive disk, non zero pattern speed ($Ω$), and different viewing angle. Most of the disk mass populated prograde orbits, with $\simeq 3.4%$ on retrograde orbits. The best fits to photometric and kinematic maps were disks with $Ω\approx 16\kmspc $. We speculate on the origins of the lopsidedness, invoking recent work on the linear overstability of nearly Keplerian disks, that possess even a small amount of a counter-rotating component. Accretion of material-no more massive than a globular cluster-onto a preexisting stellar disk, will account for the mass in our retrograde orbits, and could have stimulated the lopsidedness seen in the nucleus of M31.

Dielectric signatures of lattice instabilities at 32K and 245K in $La_{2-y}Sr_{y}MO_{4+x}$ (M=Cu,Ni) Cuprates and Nickelates

New dielectric transitions are observed at common temperatures 32K and 245K, in isostructural $La_{2}CuO_{4+x}$ and $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4},$ that are signatures of local lattice (octahedral) instabilities. The present dielectric transitions reveal new aspects of the phase diagram of the perovskite cuprates and nickelates. They suggest that competition and coexistence of superconductivity with dielectricity occurs that is analogous to that between superconductivity and anti-ferromagnetism. These results also indicate that inhomogeneous electronic states, such as charge stripes and oxygen ordering, are strongly connected to underlying lattice instabilities.

Microwave properties of superconducting $MgB_{2}$

Measurements of the $10GHz$ microwave surface resistance of dense $MgB_{2}$ wire and pellet are reported. Significant improvements are observed in the wire with reduction of porosity. The data lie substantially above the theoretical estimates for a pure BCS s-wave superconductor . However the $R_{s}(20K)$ of the wire is an order of magnitude lower than that of polycrystal $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}$ and matches with single crystal $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.95}.$The results show promise for the use of $MgB_{2}$ in microwave applications.

Anomalous scattering rate and microwave absorption in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ and $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$

We determine the scattering rate from microwave measurements for an optimally doped Bi-2212 single crystal, using a simple two fluid model with a d-wave symmetry order parameter. In the superconducting state, the calculated scattering rate is three orders of magnitude smaller than that determined from ARPES experiments. A similar anomalously large decrease in the scattering rate is also required to explain the data within a gap-quasiparticle scenario for other HTS, such as $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$. The results suggest that the assumption of normal excitations vanishing at low $T$ is invalid and an additional charge mode is responsible for the microwave absorption.

Quantum correlations and classical resonances in an open chaotic system

We show that the autocorrelation of quantum spectra of an open chaotic system is well described by the classical Ruelle-Pollicott resonances of the associated chaotic strange repeller. This correspondence is demonstrated utilizing microwave experiments on 2-D n-disk billiard geometries, by determination of the wave-vector autocorrelation C(κ) from the experimental quantum spectra S_{21}(k). The correspondence is also established via "numerical experiments" that simulate S_{21}(k) and C(κ) using periodic orbit calculations of the quantum and classical resonances. Semiclassical arguments that relate quantum and classical correlation functions in terms of fluctuations of the density of states and correlations of particle density are also examined and support the experimental results. The results establish a correspondence between quantum spectral correlations and classical decay modes in an open systems.

rf susceptibility of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals : magnetic signatures of structural changes

A sensitive tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) operating at 4MHz is used to probe the dynamic response of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals for x=0.125,0.175,0.28 and 0.33 doping. Systematics of the measured change in reactance as a function of temperature (30K<T<320K) and DC magnetic field (0<H<6kOe) reveal distinct temperature and field scales associated with the dynamic response of spin. It is notable that these features are far more striking than the corresponding features in static measurements. The results are discussed in the context of structural changes leading to polaron ordering.

Stellar orbits in triaxial clusters around black holes in galactic nuclei

We investigate the orbital structure of a model triaxial star cluster, centered around a supermassive black hole (BH), appropriate to galactic nuclei. Sridhar and Touma (1999) proved that the presence of the BH enforces some regularity in the dynamics within the radius of influence of the BH. We employ their averaging method to reduce the degrees of freedom from three to two. Numerical orbit integrations, together with Poincaré surfaces of section allow us to draw a global portrait of the orbital structure; in our calculations we employ a model cluster potential that is triaxial and harmonic. The averaged dynamics of the axisymmetric case is integrable, and we present a detailed comparison of orbits in oblate and prolate axisymmetric potentials. Both cases support resonant orbits with fixed values of eccentricity, inclination, and periapse, whose lines of nodes rotates steadily. We then systematically explore significantly triaxial potentials, possessing small oblateness, or prolateness. Resonant orbits and their families are studied both numerically, and through secular perturbation theory. Chaos appears to be suppressed for all the cases we studied, and we obtain effective third integrals. Some of the orbits appear to reinforce the shape of the potential; we provide phase space, as well as real space portraits of these orbits. A particularly promising resonant orbit exists in highly prolate, triaxial potentials.

The pattern speed of the nuclear disk of M31 using a variant of the Tremaine-Weinberg method

The twin peaks in the nucleus of M31 have been interpreted by Tremaine as a thick, eccentric, disk of stars orbiting a massive dark object; the required alignment of the apoapsides of the stellar orbits could be maintained by self-gravity, and the whole structure might be a discrete, nonlinear eigenmode. The pattern speed of this mode could, in principle, be determined by the Tremaine-Weinberg (TW) method, which requires measurements of the surface brightness, and radial velocity along a strip parallel to the line of nodes. However, spectroscopic observations along the line of nodes are not available. We propose a variant of the TW method, which exploits a basic feature of the eccentric disk model, to extract estimates of the pattern speed from {\it Hubble Space Telescope} spectroscopic data, taken along the line joining the two peaks. Within limitations imposed by the data, we estimate that the pattern rotates in a prograde manner and, for an assumed disk inclination of $77^{\circ}$, the pattern speed $|Ω_p| < 30 {\rm km s^{-1} pc^{-1}}$, or period more than $200,000$ years.

Onset of dielectric modes at 110K and 60K due to local lattice distortions in non-superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0} crystals

We report the observation of two dielectric transitions at 110K and 60K in the microwave response of non-superconducting YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0} crystals. The transitions are characterized by a change in polarizability and presence of loss peaks, associated with overdamped dielectric modes. An explanation is presented in terms of changes in polarizability of the apical O atoms in the Ba-O layer, affected by lattice softening at 110K, due to change in buckling of the Cu-O layer. The onset of another mode at 60K strongly suggests an additional local lattice change at this temperature. Thus microwave dielectric measurements are sensitive indicators of lattice softening which may be relevant to superconductivity.
