Non-quasiparticle microwave absorption in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$

We show that a non-quasiparticle charge collective mode, in parallel and coincident with the d-wave pair conductivity, leads to a quantitative understanding of microwave surface impedance measurements on superconducting $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$. The analysis suggests an inhomogeneous charge ground state in $Bi_{2}Sr_{2}CaCu_{2}O_{8+δ}$ and other HTS.

Quantum fingerprints of classical Ruelle-Pollicot resonances

N-disk microwave billiards, which are representative of open quantum systems, are studied experimentally. The transmission spectrum yields the quantum resonances which are consistent with semiclassical calculations. The spectral autocorrelation of the quantum spectrum is shown to be determined by the classical Ruelle-Pollicot resonances, arising from the complex eigenvalues of the Perron-Frobenius operator. This work establishes a fundamental connection between quantum and classical correlations in open systems.

Correlations due to localization in quantum eigenfunctions of disordered microwave cavities

Non-universal correlations due to localization are observed in statistical properties of experimental eigenfunctions of quantum chaotic and disordered microwave cavities. Varying energy {E} and mean free path {l} enable us to experimentally tune from localized to delocalized states. Large level-to-level Inverse Participation Ratio (IPR I_{2}) fluctuations are observed for the disordered billiards, whose distribution is strongly asymmetric about . The density auto-correlations of eigenfunctions are shown to decay exponentially and the decay lengths are experimentally determined. All the results are quantitatively consistent with calculations based upon nonlinear sigma-models.

Observation of Individual Josephson Vortices in YBCO Bicrystal Grain-boundary Junctions

The response of YBCO bicrystal grain-boundary junctions to small dc magnetic fields (0 - 10 Oe) has been probed with a low-power microwave (rf) signal of 4.4 GHz in a microwave-resonator setup. Peaks in the microwave loss at certain dc magnetic fields are observed that result from individual Josephson vortices penetrating into the grain-boundary junctions under study. The system is modeled as a long Josephson junction described by the sine-Gordon equation with the appropriate boundary conditions. Excellent quantitative agreement between the experimental data and the model has been obtained. Hysteresis effect of dc magnetic field is also studied and the results of measurement and calculation are compared.

Precision microwave dielectric and magnetic susceptibility measurements of correlated electronic materials using superconducting cavities

We analyze microwave cavity perturbation methods, and show that the technique is an excellent, precision method to study the dynamic magnetic and dielectric response in the $GHz$ frequency range. Using superconducting cavities, we obtain exceptionally high precision and sensitivity for measurements of relative changes. A dynamic electromagnetic susceptibility $\tildeζ(T)=ζ^{\prime}+iζ^{\prime \prime}$ is introduced, which is obtained from the measured parameters: the shift of cavity resonant frequency $δf$ and quality factor $Q$. We focus on the case of a spherical sample placed at the center of a cylindrical cavity resonant in the $TE_{011}$ mode. Depending on the sample characteristics, the magnetic permeability $\tildeμ$, the dielectric permittivity $\tildeε$ and the complex conductivity $\tildeσ$ can be extracted from $\tildeζ_{H}$. A full spherical wave analysis of the cavity perturbation is given. This analysis has led to the observation of new phenomena in novel low dimensional materials.

Microwave study of quantum n-disk scattering

We describe a wave-mechanical implementation of classically chaotic n-disk scattering based on thin 2-D microwave cavities. Two, three, and four-disk scattering are investigated in detail. The experiments, which are able to probe the stationary Green's function of the system, yield both frequencies and widths of the low-lying quantum resonances. The observed spectra are found to be in good agreement with calculations based on semiclassical periodic orbit theory. Wave-vector autocorrelation functions are analyzed for various scattering geometries, the small wave-vector behavior allowing one to extract the escape rate from the quantum repeller. Quantitative agreement is found with the value predicted from classical scattering theory. For intermediate energies, non-universal oscillations are detected in the autocorrelation function, reflecting the presence of periodic orbits.

Microwave Absorption Peaks : Signatures of Spin Dynamics in Cuprates

We show that a common feature of temperature-dependent microwave absorption is the presence of absorption peaks. $ac$ loss peaks can arise when the internal $T$-dependent magnetic relaxation time crosses the measurement frequency. These features are observed in the \QTR{em}{insulating} ($Sr_{x}Ca_{14-x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$, $La_{5/3}Sr_{1/3}NiO_{4}$ and $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6.0}$), \QTR{em}{pseudo-gap} ($T>T_{c}$ in underdoped $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7-δ}$, $Hg:1223$ and $Hg:1201$) and \QTR{em}{superconducting} ($T<T_{c}$) states of the oxides. The commonality of these features suggests a magnetic (spin) mechanism, rather than a quasiparticle origin, for the so-called ``conductivity'' peaks observed in the cuprate superconductors.

Constrained Violent Relaxation to a Spherical Halo

Violent relaxation during the collapse of a galaxy halo is known to be incomplete in realistic cases such as cosmological infall or mergers. We adopt a physical picture of strong but short lived interactions between potential fluctuations and particle orbits, using the broad framework outlined by Tremaine (1987) for incorporating incompleteness of the relaxation. We are guided by results from plasma physics, viz. the quasilinear theory of Landau damping, but allow for significant differences in our case. Crucially, wave particle scattering does not drive the system to an equilibrium distribution function of the exponential type, even in regions of phase space allowed by the constraints. The physical process is mixing without friction in ``action'' space, for which the simplest possible model is a constant phase space density modulated by the constraints. Our distribution function does not use the exponential functions of the energy prevalent in other work, which we regard as inappropriate to collisionless systems. The halo of the self-consistent, parameter-free solutions show an r^(-4) behavior in density at large r, an r^(1/4) surface brightness profile in the region 0.1-8 r_e, and a radially anisotropic velocity dispersion profile outside an isotropic core. The energy distribution seen in simulations N(E) singles out the pericenter cutoff model as the most realistic among the variants we have explored.

Harmonic generation from YBCO microwave resonators

Measurement of harmonic power on a suspended stripline microwave resonator patterned out of thin film YBa_2Cu_3O_7 (YBCO) has been carried out as a function of temperature and microwave power. The third harmonic power P_3 shows a subtle nonlinear dependence on the fundamental power P_1 on a log-log scale. Fit to a straight line yields slopes of P_3 vs. P_1 between 1.5 to 3, contrary to elementary calculations that predict a slope of exactly 3. It is shown that third harmonic power generated from higher order terms in the nonlinear impedance could account for the discrepancy quantitatively without resorting to any additional ad-hoc assumptions. Results of measurement of fifth harmonic power is presented as a confirmation. A small second harmonic power is also observed that does not show anomalous power dependence within the experimental accuracy.

Tunneling Proximity Resonances: Interplay between Symmetry and Dissipation

We report the first observation of bound-state proximity resonances in coupled dielectric resonators. The proximity resonances arise from the combined action of symmetry and dissipation. We argue that the large ratio between the widths is a distinctive signature of the multidimensional nature of the system. Our experiments shed light on the properties of 2D tunneling in the presence of a dissipative environment.

Quantum resonances and decay of a chaotic fractal repeller observed using microwaves

The quantum resonances of classically chaotic n-disk geometries were studied experimentally utilizing thin 2-D microwave geometries. The experiments yield the frequencies and widths of low-lying resonances, which are compared with semiclassical calculations. The longtime or small energy behavior of the wave-vector auto-correlation gives information about the quantum decay rate, which is in good agreement with that obtained from classical scattering theory. The intermediate energy behavior shows non-universal oscillations determined by periodic orbits.

Observation of spin freezing and relaxation at microwave frequencies in the spin ladder compound $Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$

We report the observation of a frequency ($ω$) and temperature (T) -dependent loss peak in $χ''$ and accompanying dispersion in $χ'$ from microwave (2-18GHz) measurements of the complex susceptibility $\tildeχ(ω, T)=χ'+iχ''$ of $Sr_{14-x}Ca_{x}Cu_{24}O_{41}$. We associate this phenomenon with a rapid decrease of spin disorder and corresponding spin relaxation rate, representing a ``spin freezing transition'' accompanying charge ordering which occurs at temperatures $\sim 250K$. Our results enable direct quantitative measurements of the spin relaxation rate, and yield information on spin dynamics in these materials and the related compounds $SrCuO_{2}$ and $Sr_{2}CuO_{3}$.

High frequency magneto-impedance of double perovskite $La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_{2}O_{7}$: secondary transitions at high temperatures

Radio frequency magneto-impedance measurements clearly reveal a pronounced anomaly at 260K besides the main MI transition at 125K in the double perovskite material $La_{1.2}Sr_{1.8}Mn_{2}O_{7}$. This feature is not seen clearly in static resistivity and magnetization measurements. We suggest that this anomaly represents short range magnetic correlations enhanced at radio frequencies, with the easy axis along the c-axis .

Stellar Dynamics around Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei

We classify orbits of stars that are bound to central black holes in galactic nuclei. The stars move under the combined gravitational influences of the black hole and the central star cluster. Within the sphere of influence of the black hole, the orbital periods of the stars are much shorter than the periods of precession. We average over the orbital motion and end up with a simpler problem and an extra integral of motion: the product of the black hole mass and the semimajor axis of the orbit. Thus the black hole enforces some degree of regularity in its neighborhood. Well within the sphere of influence, (i) planar, as well as three dimensional, axisymmetric configurations-both of which could be lopsided-are integrable, (ii) fully three dimensional clusters with no spatial symmetry whatsover must have semi-regular dynamics with two integrals of motion. Similar considerations apply to stellar orbits when the black hole grows adiabatically. We introduce a family of planar, non-axisymmetric potential perturbations, and study the orbital structure for the harmonic case in some detail. In the centered potentials there are essentially two main families of orbits: the familiar loops and lenses, which were discussed in Sridhar and Touma (1997, MNRAS, 287, L1-L4). We study the effect of lopsidedness, and identify a family of loop orbits, whose orientation reinforces the lopsidedness, an encouraging sign for the construction of self-consistent models of eccentric, discs around black holes, such as in M31 and NGC 4486B.

Non-linear microwave impedance of short and long Josephson Junctions

The non-linear dependence on applied $ac$ field ($b_ω$) or current ($% i_ω$) of the microwave (ac) impedance $R_ω+iX_ω$ of both short and long Josephson junctions is calculated under a variety of excitation conditions. The dependence on the junction width is studied, for both field symmetric (current anti-symmetric) and field anti-symmetric (current symmetric) excitation configurations. The resistance shows step-like features every time a fluxon (soliton) enters the junction, with a corresponding phase slip seen in the reactance. For finite widths the interference of fluxons leads to some interesting effects which are described. Many of these calculated results are observed in microwave impedance measurements on intrinsic and fabricated Josephson junctions in the high temperature superconductors, and new effects are suggested. When a $% dc$ field ($b_{dc}$) or current ($i_{dc}$) is applied, interesting phase locking effects are observed in the ac impedance $Z_ω$. In particular an almost periodic dependence on the dc bias is seen similar to that observed in microwave experiments at very low dc field bias. These results are generic to all systems with a $\cos (ϕ)$ potential in the overdamped limit and subjected to an ac drive.

High frequency magneto-electrodynamics of La_(1-x)Sr_xMnO3 single crystals

The radio frequency (RF) response of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals reveal a variety of features associated with the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the system. The resonance technique operating at ~ 4 MHz employed in this study is sensitive to small changes in both the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of the samples. Very sharp changes in frequency are observed at the ferromagnetic (FM) and structural phase transitions in both the metallic (x = 0.175) and insulating (0.125) crystals studied. In addition to the known transitions identified as FM and orthorhombic distortions, our experiments show rich structures which are not observed in conventional DC magnetization and transport experiments. Our results demonstrate that RF experiments are ideally suited to investigate the complex phase diagram in the manganites. The colossal frequency change that we observe at the FM transition in the La1-xSrxMnO3 crystals is indicative of the enormous potential for using these materials in high frequency switching applications.

Magneto-electrodynamics at high frequencies in the antiferromagnetic and superconducting states of DyNi_2B_2C

We report the observation of novel behaviour in the radio frequency (rf) and microwave response of DyNi_2B_2C over a wide range of temperature (T) and magnetic field (H) in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) and superconducting (SC) states. At microwave frequencies of 10 GHz, the T dependence of the surface impedance Z_s=R_s+iX_s was measured which yields the T dependence of the complex conductivity σ_1-iσ_2 in the SC and AFM states. At radio frequencies (4 MHz), the H and T dependence of the penetration depth λ(T,H) were measured. The establishment of antiferromagnetic order at T_N=10.3 K results in a marked decrease in the scattering of charge carriers, leading to sharp decreases in R_s and X_s. However, R_s and X_s differ from each other in the AFM state. We show that the results are consistent with conductivity relaxation whence the scattering rate becomes comparable to the microwave frequency. The rf measurements yield a rich dependence of the scattering on the magnetic field near and below T_N. Anomalous decrease of scattering at moderate applied fields is observed at temperatures near and above T_N, and arises due to a crossover from a negative magnetoresistance state, possibly associated with a loss of spin disorder scattering at low fields, to a positive magnetoresistance state associated with the metallic nature. The normal state magnetoresistance is positive at all temperatures for μ_0H>2T and at all fields for T>15K. Several characteristic field and temperature scales associated with metamagnetic transitions (H_M1(T), H_M2(T)) and onset of spin disorder H_D(T), in addition to T_c, T_N and H_c2(T) are observed in the rf measurements.
