Testing the Vacuum Oscillation and the MSW Solutions of the Solar Neutrino Problem

Solar model independent tests of the vacuum oscillation and MSW solutions of the solar neutrino problem are considered. Detailed predictions for time (seasonal) variations of the signals in the future solar neutrino detectors (SNO, Super Kamiokande, BOREXINO, HELLAZ), if solar neutrinos take part in vacuum oscillations, are given. Results on the distortions of the spectra of boron neutrinos, and of electrons from the neutrino-electron scattering induced by boron neutrinos, in the cases of vacuum oscillations or MSW transitions are presented for a large number of values of the relevant parameters. The possibilities to distinguish between the vacuum oscillation, the MSW adiabatic, and the MSW nonadiabatic transitions (solutions) in the future solar neutrino experiments are discussed.

New Constraints on Neutrino Oscillations in Vacuum as a Possible Solution of the Solar Neutrino Problem

Two-neutrino oscillations in vacuum are studied as a possible solution of the solar neutrino problem. New constraints on the parameter sn2, characterizing the mixing of the electron neutrino with another active or sterile neutrino, as well as on the mass--squared difference, dm2, of their massive neutrino components, are derived using the latest results from the four solar neutrino experiments. Oscillations into a sterile neutrino are ruled out at 99 % C.L. by the observed mean event rates even if one includes the uncertainties of the standard solar model predictions in the analysis.

Neutrinoless Double Beta Decay and the Solar Neutrino Problem

The MSW or vacuum oscillation solution of the solar neutrino problem can be reconciled with possible existence of the $(ββ)_{0ν}$ decay with a half-life corresponding to an effective Majorana mass of the electron neutrino $|m_{ee}| \cong (0.1 - 1.0)~$eV. The phenomenological consequences of such a possibility are analyzed and the implications for the mechanisms of neutrino mass generation are considered.

Pontecorvo's Original Oscillations Revisited

We show that a left-handed neutrino $ν_L$ can oscillate into its $CP$- conjugated state $\barν_R$ with maximal amplitude, in direct analogy with $K^0-\bar{K}^0$ oscillations. Peculiarities of such oscillations under different conditions are studied.

Implications of Gallium Solar Neutrino Data for the Resonant Spin-Flavor Precession Scenario

We consider the implications of the recent results of SAGE and GALLEX experiments for the solution of the solar neutrino problem in the framework of the resonant neutrino spin-flavor precession scenario. It is shown that this scenario is consistent with all the existing solar neutrino data including the gallium results. The quality of the fit of the data depends crucially on the magnetic field profile used which makes it possible to get information about the magnetic field in the solar interior. In particular, the magnetic field in the core of the sun must not be too strong ($<3 \times 10^6$ G). The detection rate in the gallium detectors turns out to be especially sensitive to the magnitude of $Δm^2$. Predictions for forthcoming solar-neutrino experiments are made.

Neutrinos with Mixing in Twisting Magnetic Fields

Transitions in a system of neutrinos with vacuum mixing and magnetic moments, propagating in matter and transverse magnetic field, are considered. It is shown that in the realistic case of magnetic field direction varying along the neutrino path qualitatively new phenomena become possible: permutation of neutrino conversion resonances, appearance of resonances in the neutrino-antineutrino ($ν_{lL}\leftrightarrow\barν_{lR}$) transition channels, neutrino-antineutrino resonant conversion, large amplitude $ν_{lL}\leftrightarrow\barν_{lR}$ oscillations, merging of different resonances (triple resonances). Possible phenomenological implications of these effects are briefly discussed.
