Constraints from Neutrino Oscillation Experiments on the Effective Majorana Mass in Neutrinoless Double $β$-Decay

We determine the possible values of the effective Majorana neutrino mass $|< m > |= |\sum_j U_{ej}^2 m_j|$ in the different phenomenologically viable three and four-neutrino scenarios. The quantities $U_{αj}$ ($α= e,μ,τ,...$) denote the elements of the neutrino mixing matrix and the Majorana neutrino masses $m_j$ ($j=1,2,3,...$) are ordered as $m_1 < m_2 < ... $ Assuming $m_1 \ll m_3$ in the three-neutrino case and $m_1 \ll m_4$ in the four-neutrino case, we discuss, in particular, how constraints on $| < m > |$ depend on the mixing angle relevant in solar neutrino oscillations and on the three mass-squared differences obtained from the analyses of the solar, atmospheric and LSND data. If neutrinoless double $β$-decay proceeds via the mechanism involving $|< m >|$, conclusions about neutrinoless double $β$-decay can be drawn. If one of the two viable four-neutrino schemes (Scheme A) is realized in nature, $|< m >|$ can be as large as 1 eV and neutrinoless double $β$-decay could possibly be discovered in the near future. In this case a Majorana CP phase of the mixing matrix $U$ could be determined. In the other four-neutrino scheme (Scheme B) there is an upper bound on $|< m >|$ of the order of $10^{-2}$ eV. In the case of three-neutrino mixing the same is true if the neutrino mass spectrum is hierarchical, however, if there exist two quasi-degenerate neutrinos and the first neutrino has a much smaller mass, values of $|< m >|$ as large as $\sim 0.1$ eV are possible.

Neutrino Mixing and Oscillations in 1999 and Beyond

The interpretation of the existing experimental evidences for oscillations of neutrinos in schemes with three and four neutrino mixing is reviewed. Forms of the lepton mixing matrix allowed by the neutrino oscillation data are considered. The possible neutrino mass spectra compatible with the observations are analyzed. The possibility to obtain information about the neutrino mass spectrum from the future $^{3}$H $β-$decay and $(ββ)_{0ν}-$decay experiments is also considered.

Enhancing the Seasonal Variation Effect in the Case of the Vacuum Oscillation Solution of the Solar Neutrino Problem

We study in detail the threshold energy dependence of the seasonal variation effect in the energy integrated solar neutrino signal of the Super-Kamiokande detector in the case of the $ν_{e}\leftrightarrow ν_{μ,τ}$ vacuum oscillation (VO) solution of the solar neutrino problem. We show, in particular, that for the values of $Δm^2$ and $\sin^22θ$ from the VO solution region, the predicted time and threshold e^- energy ($T_{e,Th}$) dependence of the event rate factorize to a high degree of accuracy. As a consequence, the VO generated seasonal variation asymmetry is given by the product of an time-independent function of $T_{e,Th}$ and the standard geometrical asymmetry. For any given $Δm^2$ and $\sin^22θ$ from the VO solution region there exists at least one value of $T_{e,Th}$ from the interval (5 - 11) MeV, for which the seasonal variation effect in the solar neutrino sample of events, formed by recoil electrons with kinetic energy $T_{e} \geq T_{e,Th}$, is either maximal or very close to the maximal; it can vary dramatically with $T_{e,Th}$. Measuring the seasonal effect in each one of a large number of samples corresponding to different values of $T_{e,Th}$ from the indicated interval, say, to $T_{e,Th} = 5; 6; 7;...; 11 MeV$, provides a very effective test of the VO solution. Predictions for the magnitude of the seasonal effect in such samples are given for a large set of representative values of $Δm^2$ and $\sin^22θ$ from the VO solution region.

The Oscillation Length Resonance in the Transitions of Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos Crossing the Earth Core

The characteristic features of the neutrino oscillation length resonance, taking place in the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transitions in the Earth of the solar and atmospheric neutrinos crossing the Earth core, are reviewed. The resonance enhances dramatically these transitions at small mixing angles but differs from the MSW one. It can be responsible, e.g., for the small excess of e-like events at Zenith angles $θ_{z} \sim (130^{\circ} - 180^{\circ})$ and can produce at least part of the Zenith angle dependence of the rate of $μ-$like events, exhibited by the Super-Kamiokande atmospheric neutrino data.

On the Oscillation Length Resonance in the Transitions of Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos Crossing the Earth Core

Assuming two-neutrino mixing takes place in vacuum, we study in detail the conditions under which the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transitions in the Earth are strongly enhanced by the neutrino oscillation length resonance when the neutrinos cross the Earth core. We show, in particular, that the neutrino oscillation length resonance is operative also in the $\barν_μ \to \barν_{s}$ transitions at small mixing angles. The properties of the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transition probabilities in the corresponding resonance regions are examined. Some implications of our results for the transitions of solar and atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth core, relevant for the interpretation of the results of the solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, are also discussed.

New Enhancement Mechanism of the Transitions in the Earth of the Solar and Atmospheric Neutrinos Crossing the Earth Core

It is shown that the $ν_2 \to ν_{e}$ and $ν_μ \to ν_{e}$ ($ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$) transitions respectively of the solar and atmospheric neutrinos in the Earth in the case of $ν_e - ν_{μ(τ)}$ mixing in vacuum, are strongly enhanced by a new type of resonance when the neutrinos cross the Earth core. The resonance is operative at small mixing angles but differs from the MSW one. It is in many respects similar to the electron paramagnetic resonance taking place in a specific configuration of two magnetic fields. The conditions for existence of the new resonance include, in particular, specific constraints on the neutrino oscillation lengths in the Earth mantle and in the Earth core, thus the resonance is a ``neutrino oscillation length resonance''. It leads also to enhancement of the $ν_2 \to ν_e$ and $ν_e \to ν_s$ transitions in the case of $ν_e - ν_s$ mixing and of the $\barν_μ \to \barν_{s}$ (or $ν_μ \to ν_{s}$) transitions at small mixing angles. The presence of the neutrino oscillation length resonance in the transitions of solar and atmospheric neutrinos traversing the Earth core has important implications for current and future solar and atmospheric neutrino experiments, and more specifically, for the interpretation of the results of the Super-Kamiokande experiment.

A Study of the Day - Night Effect for the \SK Detector: III. The Case of Transitions into Sterile Neutrino

Using the results of a high precision calculation of the solar neutrino survival probability for Earth crossing neutrinos in the case of MSW $ν_e --> ν_s$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem, we derive predictions for the one-year averaged day-night (D-N) asymmetries in the deformed recoil-$e^-$ spectrum and in the energy-integrated event rate due to the solar neutrinos, to be measured with the Super - Kamiokande detector. The asymmetries are calculated for three event samples, produced by solar $ν_e$ crossing the Earth mantle only, the core, and the mantle only + the core (the full night sample). The effects of the uncertainties in the value of the bulk matter density and in the chemical composition of the Earth core on the predictions for the D-N asymmetries are investigated. The dependence of the D - N effect related observables on the threshold recoil - e- kinetic energy, TeTh, is studied. It is shown, in particular, that for $\sin^2 2θ_V \leq 0.030$ the one year average D-N - asymmetry in the sample of events due to the core-crossing neutrinos is larger than the asymmetry in the full night sample typically by a factor $\sim (2 - 4)$. We find, however, that at small mixing angles $\sin^2 2 θ_V \ltap 0.014$, the D-N asymmetry in the case of solar $ν_e --> ν_s$ transitions is considerably smaller than if the transitions were into an active neutrino, $ν_e --> ν_{μ(τ)}$. In particular, a precision better than 1% in the measurement of any of the three one year averaged D-N asymmetries considered by us would be required to test the small mixing angle nonadiabatic $ν_e --> ν_s$ solution at $\sin^2 2θ_V ~\ltap ~0.01$.

Hybrid MSW + VO Solution of the Solar Neutrino Problem in String-Motivated Unified Theories

It is shown that the hybrid MSW + VO solution of the solar neutrino problem, according to which the solar nu_e undergo matter-enhanced transitions into nu_mu, nu_tau in the Sun followed by long wave length (about 1.5 10^8 km) nu_e -> nu_mu, nu_tau oscillations in vacuum between the Sun and the Earth, can occur naturally in string-motivated grand unified theories. We consider the supersymmetric version of a string-type SU(4)xSU(2)_LxSU(2)_R theory with U(1)_X family symmetry, which was shown to successfully describe the charged fermion masses and the quark mixing, and extend the earlier fermion mass analysis to the neutrino sector. We show that the four oscillation parameters Delta m_31^2, Delta m_21^2 and sin^2 2 theta_12, sin^2 2 theta_13, characterising the combined matter-enhanced transitions and vacuum oscillations of the solar nu_e, naturally get values in the ranges of the hybrid MSW + VO solutions found recently.

A Study of the Day - Night Effect for the Super-Kamiokande Detector: II. Electron Spectrum Deformations and Day - Night Asymmetries

Using the results of a high precision calculation of the solar neutrino survival probability for Earth crossing neutrinos in the case of MSW $ν_e \to ν_{μ(τ)}$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem, performed in an earlier study, we derive predictions for the one-year averaged day-night (D-N) asymmetry in the deformations of the $e^-$ - spectrum to be measured with the Super - Kamiokande detector, and for the D-N asymmetry in the energy- integrated one year signal in this detector. The asymmetries are calculated for solar $ν_e$ crossing the Earth mantle only, the core and the (mantle + core) for a large representative set of values of the MSW transition parameters $Δm^2$ and $\sin^2 2θ_v$ from the ``conservative'' MSW solution region obtained by taking into account possible uncertainties in the values of the $^8$B and $^7$Be neutrino fluxes. The effect of the uncertainties in the value of the bulk matter density and in the chemical composition of the core, on the D-N asymmetry predictions is discussed. It is shown, in particular, that for $\sin^2 2θ_v \leq 0.013$ the one year average D-N asymmetry for neutrinos crossing the Earth core can be larger than the asymmetry for (only mantle crossing + core crossing) neutrinos by a factor of up to six. Iso - (D-N) asymmetry contours in the $Δm^2 - \sin^2 2θ_v$ plane for the Super - Kamiokande detector are derived in the region $\sin^2 2θ_v \gsim 10^{-4}$ for only mantle crossing, core crossing and (only mantle crossing + core crossing) neutrinos. Our results indicate that the Super - Kamiokande experiment might be able to test the $\sin^2 2θ_v \le 0.01$ region of the MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem by performing selective D-N asymmetry measurements.

Three-Neutrino Mixing and Combined Vacuum Oscillations and MSW Transitions of Solar Neutrinos

Assuming three flavour neutrino mixing takes place in vacuum, we investigate the possibility that the solar nu_e take part in MSW transitions in the Sun due to Delta m^2_{31} from 10^{-7} eV^2 to 10^{-4} eV^2, followed by long wave length vacuum oscillations on the way to the Earth, triggered by Delta m^2_{21} (or Delta m^2_{32}) from 10^{-12} eV^2 to 10^{-10} eV^2, Delta m^2_{31} and Delta m^2_{21} (Delta m^2_{32}) being the corresponding neutrino mass squared differences. The solar nu_e survival probability is shown to be described in this case by a simple analytic expression. Depending on whether the vacuum oscillations are due to Delta m^2_{21} or Delta m^2_{32} there are two very different types of interplay between the MSW transitions and the vacuum oscillations of the solar nu_e. Performing an analysis of the most recently published solar neutrino data we have found several qualitatively new solutions of the solar neutrino problem of the hybrid MSW transitions + vacuum oscillations type. The solutions differ in the way the pp, 7Be and 8B neutrino fluxes are affected by the transitions in the Sun and the oscillations in vacuum. The specific features of the new solutions are discussed.

A Study of the Day - Night Effect for the Super - Kamiokande Detector: I. Time Averaged Solar Neutrino Survival Probability

This is the first of two articles aimed at providing comprehensive predictions for the day-night (D-N) effect for the Super-Kamiokande detector in the case of the MSW $ν_e \to \numt$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem. The one-year averaged probability of survival of the solar $\nue$ crossing the Earth mantle, the core, the inner 2/3 of the core, and the (core + mantle) is calculated with high precision (better than 1%) using the elliptical orbit approximation (EOA) to describe the Earth motion around the Sun. Results for the survival probability in the indicated cases are obtained for a large set of values of the MSW transition parameters $Δm^2$ and $sin^22θ_{V}$ from the ``conservative'' regions of the MSW solution, derived by taking into account possible relatively large uncertainties in the values of the $^{8}$B and $^{7}$Be neutrino fluxes. Our results show that the one-year averaged D-N asymmetry in the $ν_e$ survival probability for neutrinos crossing the Earth core can be, in the case of $sin^22 θ_{V} \leq 0.13$, larger than the asymmetry in the probability for (only mantle crossing + core crossing) neutrinos by a factor of up to six. The enhancement is larger in the case of neutrinos crossing the inner 2/3 of the core. This indicates that the Super-Kamiokande experiment might be able to test the $sin^22θ_{V} \leq 0.01$ region of the MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem by performing selective D-N asymmetry measurements.

Constraints on Energy Independent Solutions of the Solar Neutrino Problem

We analyze the latest published solar neutrino data assuming an arbitrary neutrino oscillation/conversion mechanism suppresses the electron neutrino flux from the Sun independent of energy. For oscillations/transitions into active (sterile) neutrinos such mechanisms are ruled out at 99.96 (99.9997) % C.L. assuming the standard solar model by Bahcall and Pinnsoneault '95 correctly predicts all solar neutrino fluxes within their estimated uncertainties. Even if one allows for $^8{\rm B}$ and $^7{\rm Be}$ solar neutrino fluxes that are vastly different from the ones in contemporary standard solar models these mechanisms are strongly disfavored by the data.

Short-baseline neutrino oscillations and neutrinoless double-beta decay in schemes with an inverted mass spectrum

We have considered short-baseline neutrino oscillations, tritium beta-decay and neutrinoless double-beta decay in two schemes with an inverted mass spectrum and mixing of three and four massive neutrino fields. We have analyzed the results of the latest experiments on the search for oscillations of terrestrial neutrinos and we have discussed the compatibility of the LSND indication in favor of neutrino oscillations with the results of the other experiments. In the framework of the models under consideration, it is shown that the observation of neutrinoless double-beta decay could allow to obtain information about the CP violation in the lepton sector.

Resonant neutrino spin-flavor precession and supernova shock revival

A new mechanism of supernova shock revival is proposed, which involves resonant spin--flavor precession of neutrinos with a transition magnetic moment in the magnetic field of the supernova. The mechanism can be operative in supernovae for transition magnetic moments as small as $10^{-14}μ_B$ provided the neutrino mass squared difference is in the range $Δm^2 \sim (3 \;{\rm eV})^2-(600 \;{\rm eV})^2$. It is shown that this mechanism can increase the neutrino--induced shock reheating energy by about 60\%.

On the MSW $ν_e \to ν_s$ transition solution of the solar neutrino problem

We study the stability of the two--neutrino MSW solution of the solar neutrino problem, corresponding to solar $ν_e$ transitions into sterile neutrino, $ν_e \rightarrow ν_s$, with respect to changes of the total fluxes of $^{8}$B and $^{7}$Be neutrinos, $Φ_{\rm B}$ and $Φ_{\rm Be}$. For any value of $Φ_{\rm Be}$ from the interval $0.7Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}\leq Φ_{\rm Be} \leq 1.3Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$ (for $Φ_{\rm Be} = 0.7Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$) the $ν_e \rightarrow ν_{s}$ MSW transitions provide at 95\% C.L. a description of the existing solar neutrino data for $0.40~(0.39)~Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm B} \ltap Φ_{\rm B} \ltap 36~(40)Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm B}$, $Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm B}$ and $Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$ being the fluxes in the solar model of Bahcall--Pinsonneault from 1992. The corresponding allowed regions of values of the parameters \dm2 and \sn2, characterizing the solar neutrino transitions, are derived. The physical implications of the found MSW $ν_e \rightarrow ν_s$ solutions for the future solar neutrino experiments are considered as well.

On The Vacuum Oscillation Solution of The Solar Neutrino Problem

We study the stability of the two--neutrino vacuum oscillation solution of the solar neutrino problem with respect to changes of the total fluxes of boron and beryllium neutrinos. For any value of $Φ_{\rm Be}$ from the interval $0.7Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}\leq Φ_{\rm Be} \leq 1.3Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$ the solar $ν_e$ oscillations into an active neutrino provide at 95\% C.L. a description of the existing solar neutrino data for $Φ_{\rm B} \cong (0.35 - 3.4) Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm B}$, $Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm B}$ and $Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$ being the fluxes in the solar model of Bahcall--Pinsonneault from 1992. For $Φ_{\rm Be}\cong (0.7 - 1.3)Φ^{\rm BP}_{\rm Be}$ we find also at 95\% C.L. two new (one new) oscillation solutions for oscillations into active (sterile) neutrinos. The physical implications of the new solutions for the future solar neutrino experiments are discussed. The data rule out at 97\% -- 98\% (99 \%) C.L. the possibility of a universal (neutrino energy independent) suppression of the different components of the solar neutrino flux, resulting from solar $ν_e$ oscillations or transitions into active (sterile) neutrino.

Solar Neutrino Data, Neutrino Magnetic Moments and Flavor Mixing

The results of all currently operating solar neutrino experiments are analyzed in the framework of the resonant neutrino spin--flavor precession scenario including the effects of neutrino mixing. Nine different profiles of the solar magnetic field are used in the calculations. It is shown that the available experimental data can be accounted for within the considered scenario. The Ga--Ge data lead to an upper limit on the neutrino mixing angle: $\sin 2θ_0 \aprle 0.25$. One can discriminate between small mixing angle ($\sin 2θ_0 \aprle 0.1$) and moderate mixing angle solutions by studying the solar $\barν_{e}$ flux which is predicted to be sizeable for moderate mixing angles. The expected signals due to $\barν_{e}$ in the SNO, Super--Kamiokande and Borexino experiments are calculated and found to be detectable for $\sin 2θ_0 \aprge 0.1$.
