Resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of holon-antiholon continuum in SrCuO2

We report a resonant inelastic x-ray scattering study of charge excitations in the quasi-one-dimensional Mott insulator SrCuO2. We observe a continuum of low-energy excitations, in which a highly dispersive feature with a large sinusoidal dispersion (~1.1 eV) resides. We have also measured the optical conductivity, and studied the dynamic response of the extended Hubbard model with realistic parameters, using a dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In contrast to earlier work, we do not find a long-lived exciton, but rather these results suggest that the excitation spectrum comprises a holon-antiholon continuum together with a broad resonance.

Effects of next-nearest-neighbor hopping $t^{\prime}$ on the electronic structure of cuprates

Photoemission spectra of underdoped and lightly-doped Bi$_{2-z}$Pb$_z$Sr$_2$Ca$_{1-x}${\it R}$_{x}$Cu$_2$O$_{8+y}$ ($R=$ Pr, Er) (BSCCO) have been measured and compared with those of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO). The lower-Hubbard band of the insulating BSCCO, like Ca$_2$CuO$_2$Cl$_2$, shows a stronger dispersion than La$_2$CuO$_4$ from ${\bf k}\sim$($π/2,π/2$) to $\sim$($π,0$). The flat band at ${\bf k}\sim$($π,0$) is found generally deeper in BSCCO. These observations together with the Fermi-surface shapes and the chemical potential shifts indicate that the next-nearest-neighbor hopping $|t^{\prime}|$ of the single-band model is larger in BSCCO than in LSCO and that $|t^{\prime}|$ rather than the super-exchange $J$ influences the pseudogap energy scale.

Fully Gapped Single-Particle Excitations in the Lightly Doped Cuprates

The low-energy excitations of the lightly doped cuprates were studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A finite gap was measured over the entire Brillouin zone, including along the d_{x^2 - y^2} nodal line. This effect was observed to be generic to the normal states of numerous cuprates, including hole-doped La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} and Ca_{2-x}Na_{x}CuO_{2}Cl_{2} and electron-doped Nd_{2-x}Ce_{x}CuO_{4}. In all compounds, the gap appears to close with increasing carrier doping. We consider various scenarios to explain our results, including the possible effects of chemical disorder, electronic inhomogeneity, and a competing phase.

Vorticity and the Nernst Effect in Cuprate Superconductors

We present a review of the vortex-Nernst effect in the 3 cuprate families La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4, Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_8, and YBa_2Cu_3O_{y}, and discuss the scenario that the superconducting transition in the hole-doped cuprates corresponds to the destruction of long-range phase coherence rather than the vanishing of the order-parameter amplitude.

Nodal metallic behavior of lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$

Lightly-doped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ in the so-called "insulating" spin-glass/diagonal-stripe phase has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. A quasi-particle (QP) peak crossing the Fermi level has been observed in the node direction of the d-wave superconducting gap, forming an "arc" of Fermi surface consistent with the recently observed metallic transport behavior at high temperatures of lightly-doped materials. The spectral weight of the nodal QP smoothly increases with hole doping, corresponding to the $n \sim x$ behavior of the carrier number in the underdoped and lightly-doped regions.

Comment on ''Phase Diagram of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ Probed in the Infrared: Imprints of Charge Stripe Excitations''

Recently Lucarelli {\it et al.} have reported\cite{lucarelli} temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical reflectivity of La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ over a wide doping range, focusing on the infrared peaks at 30 cm$^{-1}$ (for $x$=0.12), 250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$. They interpreted the first peak (30 cm$^{-1}$) as a signature of charge stripe ordering, while the latter two (250 cm$^{-1}$ and 510 cm$^{-1}$) are attributed to the polaronic charge excitations. However, careful readers would notice that the reported spectra are largely different from those so far measured on the same system. As we illustrate below, all these peaks are caused by an uncontrolled leakage of the c-axis reflectivity into the measured spectra.

The c-axis optical sum rule and possible new collective mode in LSCO

We present the c-axis optical conductivity $σ_{1c}(ω, T)$ of underdoped ($x$ = 0.12) and optimally doped ($x$ = 0.15) LSCO from 4 meV to 1.8 eV obtained by a combination of reflectivity and transmission spectra. In addition to the opening of the superconducting gap, we observe an {\it increase} of conductivity above the gap up to 270 meV with a maximal effect at about 120 meV. This may indicate a new collective mode at a surprisingly large energy scale. The Ferrell-Glover-Tinkham sum rule is violated for both doping levels. Although the relative value of the violation is much larger for the underdoped sample, the absolute increase of the low-frequency spectral weight, including that of the condensate, is higher in the optimally doped regime. Our results resemble in many respects the observations in YBCO.

Effect of a magnetic field on the spin- and charge-density wave order in La1.45Nd0.4Sr0.15CuO4

The spin-density wave (SDW) and charge-density wave (CDW) order in superconducting La1.45Nd0.4Sr0.15CuO4 were studied under an applied magnetic field using neutron and X-ray diffraction techniques. In zero field, incommensurate (IC) SDW order appears below ~ 40 K, which is characterized by neutron diffraction peaks at (1/2 +/- 0.134, 1/2 +/- 0.134, 0). The intensity of these IC peaks increases rapidly below T_Nd ~ 8 K due to an ordering of the Nd^3+ spins. The application of a 1 T magnetic field parallel to the c-axis markedly diminishes the intensity below T_Nd, while only a slight decrease in intensity is observed at higher temperatures for fields up to 7 T. Our interpretation is that the c-axis field suppresses the parasitic Nd^3+ spin order at the incommensurate wave vector without disturbing the stripe order of Cu^2+ spins. Consistent with this picture, the CDW order, which appears below 60 K, shows no change for magnetic fields up to 4 T. These results stand in contrast to the significant field-induced enhancement of the SDW order observed in superconducting La2-xSrxCuO4 with x ~ 0.12 and stage-4 La2CuO4+y. The differences can be understood in terms of the relative volume fraction exhibiting stripe order in zero field, and the collective results are consistent with the idea that suppression of superconductivity by vortices nucleates local patches of stripe order.

Sliding conduction by the quasi one-dimensional charge-ordered state in Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$

Nonlinear conduction (NLC) of the two-leg spin ladder, Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$, was investigated for the $x$=0, 1 and 12 materials . Although insulating materials ($x$=0 and 1) exibited the NLC both in the ladder- and rung directions, the NLC in the ladder direction of the $x$=0-material was found to be very special. We considered this to be due to the sliding motion of the charge ordered state, which was responsible for the resonance at microwave frequencies. We discussed possible candidates for the charge ordered state responsible for the NLC, including Wigner crystal in quasi one dimension (4$k_F$-CDW).

Imaging Quasiparticle Interference in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Scanning tunneling spectroscopy of the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d reveals weak, incommensurate, spatial modulations in the tunneling conductance. Images of these energy-dependent modulations are Fourier analyzed to yield the dispersion of their wavevectors. Comparison of the dispersions with photoemission spectroscopy data indicates that quasiparticle interference, due to elastic scattering between characteristic regions of momentum-space, provides a consistent explanation for the conductance modulations, without appeal to another order parameter. These results refocus attention on quasiparticle scattering processes as potential explanations for other incommensurate phenomena in the cuprates. The momentum-resolved tunneling spectroscopy demonstrated here also provides a new technique with which to study quasiparticles in correlated materials.

Sliding Density-Wave in Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} Ladder Compounds

We used transport and Raman scattering measurements to identify the insulating state of self-doped spin 1/2 two-leg ladders of Sr_{14}Cu_{24}O_{41} as a weakly pinned, sliding density wave with non-linear conductivity and a giant dielectric response that persists to remarkably high temperatures.

Collective density wave excitations in two-leg Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41} ladders

Raman measurements in the 1.5 - 20 cm-1 energy range were performed on single crystals of Sr_{14-x}Ca_xCu_{24}O_{41}. A quasielastic scattering peak (QEP) which softens with cooling is observed in the polarization parallel to the ladder direction for samples with x = 0, 8 and 12. The QEP is a Raman fingerprint of pinned collective density wave excitations screened by uncondensed carriers. Our results suggest that transport in metallic samples, which is similar to transport in underdoped high-T_c cuprates, is driven by a collective electronic response.

Conical Singular Solutions in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity Employing the ADM Canonical Formalism

Topological solutions in the (2+1)-dimensional Einstein theory of gravity are studied within the ADM canonical formalism. It is found that a conical singularity appears in the closed de Sitter universe solution as a topological defect in the case of the Einstein theory with a cosmological constant. Quantum effects on the conical singularity are studied using the de Broglie-Bohm interpretation. Finite quantum tunneling effects are obtained for the closed de Sitter universe, while no quantum effects are obtained for an open universe.

The high-field phase diagram of the cuprates derived from the Nernst effect

Measurements of the Nernst signal in the vortex-liquid state of the cuprates to high fields (33 T) reveal that vorticity extends to very high fields even close to the zero-field critical temperature $T_{c0}$. In overdoped $\rm La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4$ (LSCO) we show that the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ curve does not end at $T_{c0}$, but at a much higher temperature. These results imply that $T_{c0}$ corresponds to a loss in phase rigidity rather than a vanishing of the pairing amplitude. An intermediate field $H^*(T)\ll H_{c2}(T)$ is shown to be the field scale for the flux-flow resistivity.

New Josephson Plasma Modes in Underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 Induced by Parallel Magnetic Field

The c-axis reflectivity spectrum of underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.6 (YBCO) is measured below Tc=59K in parallel magnetic fields H//CuO2 up to 7T. Upon application of a parallel field, a new peak appears at finite frequency in the optical conductivity at the expense of suppression of c-axis condensate weight. We conclude that the dramatic change originates from different Josephson coupling strengths between bilayers with and without Josephson vortices. We find that the 400cm^-1 broad conductivity peak in YBCO gains the spectral weight under parallel magnetic field; this indicates that the condensate weight at ω=0 is distributed to the intra-bilayer mode as well as to the new optical Josephson mode.

A Four-Unit-Cell Periodic Pattern of Quasiparticle States Surrounding Vortex Cores in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d

Scanning tunneling microscopy is used to image the additional quasiparticle states generated by quantized vortices in the high-Tc superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+d. They exhibit a Cu-O bond oriented 'checkerboard' pattern, with four unit cell (4a0) periodicity and a ~30 angstrom decay length. These electronic modulations may be related to the magnetic field-induced, 8a0 periodic, spin density modulations of decay length ~70 angstroms recently discovered in La1.84Sr0.16CuO4. The proposed explanation is a spin density wave localized surrounding each vortex core. General theoretical principles predict that, in the cuprates, a localized spin modulation of wavelength L should be associated with a corresponding electronic modulation of wavelength L/2, in good agreement with our observations.

Doping dependent evolution of the electronic structure of La2-xSrxCuO4 in the superconducting and metallic phases

The electronic structure of the La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$ (LSCO) system has been studied by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We report on the evolution of the Fermi surface, the superconducting gap and the band dispersion around the extended saddle point $k=(π,0)$ with hole doping in the superconducting and metallic phases. As hole concentration $x$ decreases, the flat band at $(π,0)$ moves from above the Fermi level ($E_F$) for $x>0.2$ to below $E_F$ for $x<0.2$, and is further lowered down to $x=0.05$. From the leading-edge shift of ARPES spectra, the magnitude of the superconducting gap around $(π,0)$ is found to monotonically increase as $x$ decreases from $x=0.30$ down to $x=0.05$ even though $T_c$ decreases in the underdoped region, and the superconducting gap appears to smoothly evolve into the normal-state gap at $x=0.05$. It is shown that the energy scales characterizing these low-energy structures have similar doping dependences. For the heavily overdoped sample ($x=0.30$), the band dispersion and the ARPES spectral lineshape are analyzed using a simple phenomenological self-energy form, and the electronic effective mass enhancement factor $m^*/m_b \simeq 2$ has been found. As the hole concentration decreases, an incoherent component that cannot be described within the simple self-energy analysis grows intense in the high-energy tail of the ARPES peak. Some unusual features of the electronic structure observed for the underdoped region ($x \lesssim 0.10$) are consistent with the numerical works on the stripe model.

Imaging the granular structure of high-Tc superconductivity in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x

Granular superconductivity occurs when microscopic superconducting grains are separated by non-superconducting regions through which they communicate by Josephson tunneling to establish the macroscopic superconducting state [1]. Although crystals of the cuprate high-Tc superconductors are not granular in a structural sense, theory indicates that at low hole densities the holes can become concentrated at some locations resulting in hole-rich superconducting domains [2-5]. Granular superconductivity due to Josephson tunneling through 'undoped' regions between such domains would represent a new paradigm for the underdoped cuprates. Here we report studies of the spatial interrelationships between STM tunneling spectra in underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x. They reveal an apparent spatial segregation of the electronic structure into ~3nm diameter domains (with superconducting characteristics and local energy gap delta<50 meV) in an electronically distinct background. To explore whether this represents nanoscale segregation of two distinct electronic phases, we employ scattering-resonances at Ni impurity atoms [6] as 'markers' for the local existence of superconductivity [7-9]. No Ni-resonances are detected in any regions where delta>50(2.5) meV. These observations suggest that underdoped Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x is a mixture of two different short-range electronic orders with the long-range characteristics of a granular superconductor.
