Quantum Hall effects in fast rotating Fermi gases with anisotropic dipolar interaction

We investigate fast rotating quasi-two-dimensional dipolar Fermi gases in the quantum Hall regime. By tuning the direction of the dipole moments with respect to the z-axis, the dipole-dipole interaction becomes anisotropic in the $x$-$y$ plane. For a soft confining potential we find that, as we tilt the angle of the dipole moments, the system evolves from a $ν= 1/3$ Laughlin state with dipoles being polarized along the z axis to a series of ground states characterized by distinct mean total angular momentum, and finally to an anisotropic integer quantum Hall state. During the transition from the fractional regime to the integer regime, we find that the density profile of the system exhibits crystal-like structures. We map out the ground states as a function of the tilt angle and the confining potential, revealing the competition of the isotropic confining potential and both the isotropic and anisotropic components of the dipole-dipole interaction.

Dynamical properties of a trapped dipolar Fermi gas at finite temperature

We investigate the dynamical properties of a trapped finite-temperature normal Fermi gas with dipole-dipole interaction. For the free expansion dynamics, we show that the expanded gas always becomes stretched along the direction of the dipole moment. In addition, we present the temperature and interaction dependences of the asymptotical aspect ratio. We further study the collapse dynamics of the system by suddenly increasing the dipolar interaction strength. We show that, in contrast to the anisotropic collapse of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate, a dipolar Fermi gas always collapses isotropically when the system becomes globally unstable. We also explore the interaction and temperature dependences for the frequencies of the low-lying collective excitations.

Density oscillations in trapped dipolar condensates

We investigated the ground state wave function and free expansion of a trapped dipolar condensate. We find that dipolar interaction may induce both biconcave and dumbbell density profiles in, respectively, the pancake- and cigar-shaped traps. On the parameter plane of the interaction strengths, the density oscillation occurs only when the interaction parameters fall into certain isolated areas. The relation between the positions of these areas and the trap geometry is explored. By studying the free expansion of the condensate with density oscillation, we show that the density oscillation is detectable from the time-of-flight image.

Thermodynamic properties of a dipolar Fermi gas

Based on the semi-classical theory, we investigate the thermodynamic properties of a dipolar Fermi gas. Through a self-consistent procedure, we numerically obtain the phase space distribution function at finite temperature. We show that the deformations in both momentum and real space becomes smaller and smaller as one increases the temperature. For homogeneous case, we also calculate pressure, entropy, and heat capacity. In particular, at low temperature limit and in weak interaction regime, we obtain an analytic expression for the entropy, which agrees qualitatively with our numerical result. The stability of a trapped gas at finite temperature is also explored.

Fermi surface of a trapped dipolar Fermi gas

Under the framework of the semiclassical theory, we investigate the equilibrium-state properties of a spin polarized dipolar Fermi gas through full numerical calculation. We show that the Fermi surfaces in both real and momentum spaces are stretched along the attractive direction of dipolar interaction. We further verify that the deformed Fermi surfaces can be well approximated by ellipsoids. In addition, the deformation parameters slightly depend on the local real- and momentum-space densities. We also study the interaction strength dependence of the energy and real- and momentum-space densities. By comparing them with variational results, we find that the ellipsoidal ansatz usually generates accurate results for weak dipolar interaction, while under strong dipolar interaction limit, notable discrepancy can be observed. Finally, we map out the stability boundary of the system.

Singlet and triplet BCS pairs in a gas of two-species fermionic polar molecules

We investigate the BCS pairing in a mixture of fermionic polar molecules with two different hyperfine states. We derive a set of coupled gap equations and find that this system supports both spin-singlet and -triplet BCS pairs. We also calculate the critical temperatures and the angular dependence of order parameters. In addition, by tuning short-range interaction between inter-species molecules, the transition between singlet and triplet paired states may be realized.

Making vortices in dipolar spinor condensates via rapid adiabatic passage

We propose to the create vortices in spin-1 condensates via magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. Starting with a polarized condensate prepared under large axial magnetic field, we show that by gradually inverting the field, population transfer among different spin states can be realized in a controlled manner. Under optimal condition, we generate a doubly quantized vortex state containing nearly all atoms in the condensate. The resulting vortex state is a direct manifestation of the dipole-dipole interaction and spin textures in spinor condensates. We also point out that the whole process can be qualitatively described by a simple rapid adiabatic passage model.

Control of photon propagation via electromagnetically induced transparency in lossless media

We study the influence of a lossless material medium on the coherent storage and quantum state transfer of a quantized probe light in an ensemble of $Λ$-type atoms. The medium is modeled as uniformly distributed two-level atoms with same energy level spacing, coupling to a probe light. This coupled system can be simplified to a collection of two-mode polaritons which couple to one transition of the $Λ$-type atoms. We show that, when the other transition of $Λ$-type atoms is controlled by a classical light, the electromagnetically induced transparency can also occur for the polaritons. In this case the coherent storage and quantum transfer for photon states are achievable through the novel dark states with respect to the polaritons. By calculating the corresponding dispersion relation, we find the ensemble of the three-level atoms with $Λ$-type transitions may serve as quantum memory for it slows or even stops the light propagation through the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency. the corresponding dispersion relation, we find the ensemble of the three-level atoms with $Λ$-type transitions may serve as quantum memory for it slows or even stops the light propagation through the mechanism of electromagnetically induced transparency.

The stability and free expansion of a dipolar Fermi gas

We investigate the stability and the free expansion of a trapped dipolar Fermi gas. We show that stabilizing the system relying on tuning the trap geometry is generally inefficient. We further show that the expanded density profile always gets stretched along the attractive direction of dipolar interaction. We also point out that by switching off the dipolar interaction simultaneously with the trapping potential, the deformation of momentum distribution can be directly observed.

Deflection of Slow Light by Magneto-Optically Controlled Atomic Media

We present a semi-classical theory for light deflection by a coherent $Λ$-type three-level atomic medium in an inhomogeneous magnetic field or an inhomogeneous control laser. When the atomic energy levels (or the Rabi coupling by the control laser) are position-dependent due to the Zeeman effect by the inhomogeneous magnetic field (or the inhomogeneity of the control field profile), the spatial dependence of the refraction index of the atomic medium will result in an observable deflection of slow signal light when the electromagnetically induced transparency happens to avoid medium absorption. Our theoretical approach based on Fermat's principle in geometrical optics not only provides a consistent explanation for the most recent experiment in a straightforward way, but also predicts the new effects for the slow signal light deflection by the atomic media in an inhomogeneous off-resonant control laser field.

Novel quantum phases of dipolar Bose gases in optical lattices

We investigate the quantum phases of polarized dipolar Bosons loaded into a two-dimensional square and three-dimensional cubic optical lattices. We show that the long-range and anisotropic nature of the dipole-dipole interaction induces a rich variety of quantum phases, including the supersolid and striped supersolid phases in 2D lattices, and the layered supersolid phase in 3D lattices.

Chemical and Photometric Evolution of Extended Ultraviolet Disks: Optical Spectroscopy of M83 (NGC5236) and NGC4625

We present the results from the analysis of optical spectra of 31 Halpha-selected regions in the extended UV (XUV) disks of M83 (NGC5236) and NGC4625 recently discovered by GALEX. The spectra were obtained using IMACS at Las Campanas Observatory 6.5m Magellan I telescope and COSMIC at the Palomar 200-inch telescope, respectively for M83 and NGC4625. The line ratios measured indicate nebular oxygen abundances (derived from the R23 parameter) of the order of Zsun/5-Zsun/10. For most emission-line regions analyzed the line fluxes and ratios measured are best reproduced by models of photoionization by single stars with masses in the range 20-40 Msun and oxygen abundances comparable to those derived from the R23 parameter. We find indications for a relatively high N/O abundance ratio in the XUV disk of M83. Although the metallicities derived imply that these are not the first stars formed in the XUV disks, such a level of enrichment could be reached in young spiral disks only 1 Gyr after these first stars would have formed. The amount of gas in the XUV disks allow maintaining the current level of star formation for at least a few Gyr.

Dipolar effect in coherent spin mixing of two atoms in a single optical lattice site

We show that atomic dipolar effects are detectable in the system that recently demonstrated two-atom coherent spin dynamics within individual lattice sites of a Mott state. Based on a two-state approximation for the two-atom internal states and relying on a variational approach, we have estimated the spin dipolar effect. Despite the absolute weakness of the dipole-dipole interaction, it is shown that it leads to experimentally observable effects in the spin mixing dynamics.

An Improved Nonperturbative Method for Studying Two-dimensional Vortex Liquids

We show how a systematic improvement can be made on the nonperturbative parquet approximation method which was previously used to study the effect of thermal fluctuations in vortex liquids in high-temperature superconductors. This is achieved by including an infinite subset of Feynman diagrams contributing to the renormalized four-point vertex function of the Ginzburg-Landau model, which was omitted in the original approximation. We find that the growing crystalline order in the vortex liquid is more pronounced in the improved approximation. In particular, the second and third peaks in the liquid structure factor, which appeared as one peak in the original approximation, are now resolved.

The GALEX Ultraviolet Atlas of Nearby Galaxies

We present images, integrated photometry, surface-brightness and color profiles for a total of 1034 nearby galaxies recently observed by the GALEX satellite in its far-ultraviolet (FUV; 1516A) and near-ultraviolet (NUV; 2267A) bands. (...) This data set has been complemented with archival optical, near-infrared, and far-infrared fluxes and colors. We find that the integrated (FUV-K) color provides robust discrimination between elliptical and spiral/irregular galaxies and also among spiral galaxies of different sub-types. Elliptical galaxies with brighter K-band luminosities (i.e. more massive) are redder in (NUV-K) color but bluer in (FUV-NUV) than less massive ellipticals. In the case of the spiral/irregular galaxies our analysis shows the presence of a relatively tight correlation between the (FUV-NUV) color and the total infrared-to-UV ratio. The correlation found between (FUV-NUV) color and K-band luminosity (with lower luminosity objects being bluer than more luminous ones) can be explained as due to an increase in the dust content with galaxy luminosity. The images in this Atlas along with the profiles and integrated properties are publicly available through a dedicated web page at http://nedwww.ipac.caltech.edu/level5/GALEX_Atlas/

Spontaneous spin textures in dipolar spinor condensates

We have mapped out a detailed phase diagram that shows the ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the interplay between the dipolar and the spin-exchange interactions induces a rich variety of quantum phases that exhibit spontaneous magnetic ordering in the form of intricate spin textures.

The Space Density and Colors of Massive Galaxies at 2<z<3: the Predominance of Distant Red Galaxies

Using the deep multi-wavelength MUSYC, GOODS, and FIRES surveys we construct a stellar mass-limited sample of galaxies at 2 10^11 Solar masses distributed over four independent fields with a total area of almost 400 sq arcmin. The mean number density of massive galaxies in this redshift range is (2.2+-0.6) x 10^-4 Mpc^-3. We present median values and 25th and 75th percentiles for the distributions of observed R mags, observed J-K colors, and rest-frame UV continuum slopes, M/L(V) ratios, and U-V colors. The galaxies show a large range in all these properties. The ``median galaxy'' is faint in the observer's optical (R=25.9), red in the observed near-IR (J-K=2.48), has a rest-frame UV spectrum which is relatively flat (beta=-0.4), and rest-frame optical colors resembling those of nearby spiral galaxies (U-V=0.62). We determine which galaxies would be selected as Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) or Distant Red Galaxies (DRGs, having J-K>2.3) in this mass-limited sample. By number DRGs make up 69% of the sample and LBGs 20%, with a small amount of overlap. By mass DRGs make up 77% and LBGs 17%. Neither technique provides a representative sample of massive galaxies at 2<z<3 as they only sample the extremes of the population. As we show here, multi-wavelength surveys with high quality photometry are essential for an unbiased census of massive galaxies in the early Universe. The main uncertainty in this analysis is our reliance on photometric redshifts; confirmation of the results presented here requires extensive near-infrared spectroscopy of optically-faint samples.

Novel vortex structures in dipolar condensates

We investigate the properties of single vortices and of vortex lattice in a rotating dipolar condensate. We show that vortices in this system possess many novel features induced by the long-range anisotropic dipolar interaction between particles. For example, when the dipoles are polarized along the rotation axis, vortices may display a crater-like structure; when dipoles are polarized orthogonal to the rotation axis, vortex cores takes an elliptical shape and the vortex lattice no longer possesses hexagonal symmetry.
