Star Formation in NGC5194 (M51a): The Panchromatic View from GALEX to Spitzer

(Abridged) Far ultraviolet to far infrared images of the nearby galaxy NGC5194, from Spitzer, GALEX, Hubble Space Telescope and ground--based data, are used to investigate local and global star formation, and the impact of dust extinction in HII-emitting knots. In the IR/UV-UV color plane, the NGC5194 HII knots show the same trend observed for normal star-forming galaxies, having a much larger dispersion than starburst galaxies. We identify the dispersion as due to the UV emission predominantly tracing the evolved, non-ionizing stellar population, up to ages 50-100 Myr. While in starbursts the UV light traces the current SFR, in NGC5194 it traces a combination of current and recent-past SFR. Unlike the UV emission, the monochromatic 24 micron luminosity is an accurate local SFR tracer for the HII knots in NGC5194; this suggests that the 24 micron emission carriers are mainly heated by the young, ionizing stars. However, preliminary results show that the ratio of the 24 micron emission to the SFR varies by a factor of a few from galaxy to galaxy. While also correlated with star formation, the 8 micron emission is not directly proportional to the number of ionizing photons. This confirms earlier suggestions that the carriers of the 8 micron emission are heated by more than one mechanism.

Systematic uncertainties in the analysis of star cluster parameters based on broad-band imaging observations

(ABRIDGED) We assess the systematic uncertainties in (young) cluster age, mass, and - to a lesser extent - extinction and metallicity determinations, based on broad-band imaging observations with the Hubble Space Telescope. Our aim here is to intercompare the results obtained using a variety of commonly used modelling techniques, specifically with respect to our own extensively tested multi-dimensional approach. Any significant differences among the resulting parameters are due to the details of the various, independently developed modelling techniques used, rather than to the stellar population models themselves. Despite the model uncertainties and the selection effects inherent to most methods used, we find that the PEAKS in the relative age and mass distributions of a given young (<= 10^9 yr) cluster system can be derived relatively robustly and consistently, to accuracies of sigma_t = Delta <= 0.35 and sigma_M = Delta <= 0.14, respectively, assuming Gaussian distributions in cluster ages and masses for reasons of simplicity. The peaks in the relative mass distributions can be obtained with a higher degree of confidence than those in the relative age distributions, as exemplified by the smaller spread among the peak values of the mass distributions derived. This implies that mass determinations are mostly insensitive to the approach adopted. We reiterate that as extensive a wavelength coverage as possible is required to obtain robust and internally consistent age and mass estimates for the individual objects, with reasonable uncertainties. Finally, we conclude that the ACTUAL filter systems used for the observations should be used for constructing model colours, instead of using conversion equations, to achieve more accurate derivations of ages and masses.

Large-Amplitude Ultraviolet Variations in the RR Lyrae Star ROTSE-I J143753.84+345924.8

The NASA Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) satellite has obtained simultaneous near and far ultraviolet light curves of the ROTSE-I Catalog RR Lyrae ab-type variable star J143753.84+345924.8. A series of 38 GALEX Deep Imaging Survey observations well distributed in phase within the star's 0.56432d period shows an AB=4.9mag variation in the far UV (1350-1750A) band and an AB=1.8mag variation in the near UV (1750-2750A) band, compared with only a 0.8mag variation in the broad, unfiltered ROTSE-I (4500-10000A) band. These GALEX UV observations are the first to reveal a large RR Lyrae amplitude variation at wavelengths below 1800A. We compare the GALEX and ROTSE-I observations to predictions made by recent Kurucz stellar atmosphere models. We use published physical parameters for the comparable period (0.57433d), well-observed RR Lyrae star WY Antliae to compute predicted FUV, NUV, and ROTSE-I light curves for J143753.84+345924.8. The observed light curves agree with the Kurucz predictions for [Fe/H]=-1.25 to within AB=0.2mag in the GALEX NUV and ROTSE-I bands, and within 0.5mag in the FUV. At all metallicities between solar and one hundredth solar, the Kurucz models predict 6-8mag of variation at wavelengths between 1000-1700A. Other variable stars with similar temperature variations, such as Cepheids, should also have large-amplitude FUV light curves, observable during the ongoing GALEX imaging surveys.

Quantum phases of dipolar spinor condensates

We study the zero-temperature ground state structure of a spin-1 condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. We show that the dipolar interactions break the rotational symmetry of the Hamiltonian and induce new quantum phases. Different phases can be reached by tuning the effective strength of the dipolar interactions via modifying the trapping geometry. The experimental feasibility of detecting these phases is investigated. The spin-mixing dynamics is also studied.

Calibrating dipolar interaction in an atomic condensate

We revisit the topic of a dipolar condensate with the recently derived more rigorous pseudo-potential for dipole-dipole interaction [A. Derevianko, Phys. Rev. A {\bf 67}, 033607 (2003)]. Based on the highly successful variational technique, we find that all dipolar effects estimated before (using the bare dipole-dipole interaction) become significantly larger, i.e. are amplified by the new velocity-dependent pseudo-potential, especially in the limit of large or small trap aspect ratios. This result points to a promising prospect for detecting dipolar effects inside an atomic condensate.

Structural phase transitions of vortex matter in an optical lattice

We consider the vortex structure of a rapidly rotating trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensate in the presence of a co-rotating periodic optical lattice potential. We observe a rich variety of structural phases which reflect the interplay of the vortex-vortex and vortex-lattice interactions. The lattice structure is very sensitive to the ratio of vortices to pinning sites and we observe structural phase transitions and domain formation as this ratio is varied.

The dynamics of quantum phases in a spinor condensate

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion dynamics in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground state distribution of the phases associated with the total atom number ($N$), the total magnetization (${\cal M}$), and the alignment (or hypercharge) ($Y$) of the system. The mean field ground state is stable against fluctuations of atom numbers in each of the spin components, and the phases associated with the order parameter for each spin components diffuse while dynamically recover the two broken continuous symmetries [U(1) and SO(2)] when $N$ and ${\cal M}$ are conserved as in current experiments. We discuss the implications to the quantum dynamics due to an external (homogeneous) magnetic field. We also comment on the case of a spinor-1 condensate with anti-ferromagnetic interactions.

Quantum phase diffusions of a spinor condensate

We discuss the quantum phases and their diffusion in a spinor-1 atomic Bose-Einstein condensate. For ferromagnetic interactions, we obtain the exact ground state distribution of the phase fluctuations corresponding to the total atom number ($N$), the magnetization (${\cal M}$), and the alignment (or hypercharge) ($Y$) of the system. The mean field ground state is shown to be stable against these fluctuations, which dynamically recover the two continuous symmetries associated with the conservation of $N$ and ${\cal M}$ as in current experiments.

Expansion of a dipolar condensate

We discuss the expansion of an initially trapped dipolar condensate. When the nominal isotropic s-wave interaction strength becomes tunable through a Feshbach resonance, anisotropic dipolar effects are shown to be detectable under current experimental conditions [E. Testing intermediate-age stellar evolution models with VLT photometry of LMC clusters. I. The data

This is the first of a series of three papers devoted to the calibration of a few parameters of crucial importance in the modeling of the evolution of intermediate-mass stars, with special attention to the amount of convective core overshoot. To this end we acquired deep V and R photometry for three globular clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), namely NGC 2173, SL 556 and NGC 2155, in the age interval 1-3 Gyr. In this first paper, we describe the aim of the project, the VLT observations and data reduction, and we make preliminary comparisons of the color-magnitude diagrams with both Padova and Yonsei-Yale isochrones. Two following papers in this series present the results of a detailed analysis of these data, independently carried out by members of the Yale and Padova stellar evolution groups. This allows us to compare both sets of models and discuss their main differences, as well as the systematic effects that they would have to the determination of the ages and metallicities of intermediate-age single stellar populations.

Testing intermediate-age stellar evolution models with VLT photometry of LMC clusters. II. Analysis with the Yale models

We present an analysis of CMDs of three intermediate-age LMC clusters, namely NGC 2173, SL 556 and NGC 2155. The main goal of our project is to investigate the amount of convective core overshoot necessary to reproduce the CMDs of relatively metal-poor, intermediate age stellar populations. We conclude that a moderate amount of overshoot and some fraction of binary stars are essential for reproducing the observed shapes around the turnoff in the CMD's of all three clusters: unresolved binary stars fill in the expected core contraction gap, and make a unique sequence near the gap, which cannot be reproduced by single stars alone, even with a larger amount of overshoot. From our overall analysis such as, shape of isochrones, star counts, color distribution, and synthetic CMD comparisons, we conclude that overshoot ~ 20% of the local pressure scale height best reproduces the CMD properties of all three clusters. The best age estimates are 1.5, 2.1 and 2.9 Gyr for NGC 2173, SL 556 and NGC 2155, respectively.

On the single mode approximation in spinor-1 atomic condensate

We investigate the validity conditions of the single mode approximation (SMA) in spinor-1 atomic condensate when effects due to residual magnetic fields are negligible. For atomic interactions of the ferromagnetic type, the SMA is shown to be exact, with a mode function different from what is commonly used. However, the quantitative deviation is small under current experimental conditions (for $^{87}$Rb atoms). For anti-ferromagnetic interactions, we find that the SMA becomes invalid in general. The differences among the mean field mode functions for the three spin components are shown to depend strongly on the system magnetization. Our results can be important for studies of beyond mean field quantum correlations, such as fragmentation, spin squeezing, and multi-partite entanglement.

Probing dipolar effects with condensate shape oscillation

We discuss the low energy shape oscillations of a magnetic trapped atomic condensate including the spin dipole interaction. When the nominal isotropic s-wave interaction strength becomes tunable through a Feshbach resonance (e.g. as for $^{85}$Rb atoms), anisotropic dipolar effects are shown to be detectable under current experimental conditions [E. A. Donley {\it et al.}, Nature {\bf 412}, 295 (2001)].

Decoherence of collective atomic spin states due to inhomogeneous coupling

We investigate the decoherence of a superposition of symmetric collective internal states of an atomic ensemble due to inhomogeneous coupling to external control fields. For asymptotically large system, we find the characteristic decoherence rate scales as $\sqrt{N}$ with $N$ being the total number of atoms. Our results shed new light on attempts for quantum information processing and storage with atomic ensembles.

Towards Better Age Estimates for Stellar Populations: The Y^2 Isochrones for Solar Mixture

We have constructed a new set of isochrones, called the Y^2 Isochrones, that represent an update of the Revised Yale Isochrones (RYI), using improved opacities and equations of state. Helium diffusion and convective core overshoot have also been taken into consideration. This first set of isochrones is for the scaled solar mixture. A subsequent paper will consider the effects of alpha-element enhancement, believed to be relevant in many stellar systems. Two additionally significant features of these isochrones are that (1) the stellar models start their evolution from the pre-main sequence birthline instead of from the zero-age main sequence, and (2) the color transformation has been performed using both the latest table of Lejeune et al., and the older, but now modified, Green et al. table. The isochrones have performed well under the tests conducted thus far. The reduction in the age of the Galactic globular clusters caused by this update in stellar models alone is approximately 15% relative to RYI-based studies. When the suggested modification for the alpha-element enhancement is made as well, the total age reduction becomes approximately 20%. When post-RGB evolutionary stages are included, we find that the ages of globular clusters derived from integrated colors are consistent with the isochrone fitting ages. Isochrones are available from http://achee.srl.caltech.edu.

Trapped condensates of atoms with dipole interactions

We discuss in detail properties of trapped atomic condensates with anisotropic dipole interactions. A practical procedure for constructing anisotropic low energy pseudo potentials is proposed and justified by the agreement with results of numerical multi-channel calculations. The time dependent variational method is adapted to reveal several interesting features observed in numerical solutions of condensate wave function. Collective low energy shape oscillations and their stability inside electric fields are investigated. Our results shed new light into macroscopic coherence properties of interacting quantum degenerate atomic gases.

Mass Loss On the Horizontal Branch: an Application to NGC6791

The presence of a substantial number of hot stars in the extremely metal-rich} open cluster NGC6791 has been a mystery. If these hot stars are in their core helium burning phase, they are significantly bluer (hotter) than predicted by canonical stellar evolution theory. No obvious explanation is available yet. We consider the effects of mass loss during the evolution of horizontal branch (HB) stars as their possible origin. We find that the addition of mass loss causes HB stars to evolve to be hotter and fainter. Mass loss has a more pronounced effect for less massive stars and thus naturally widens the temperature (and color) distribution on the HB. If mass loss rates are higher for more metal-rich stars, this phenomenon would be even more pronounced in the metal-rich populations, such as NGC6791. We find that mass loss on the HB may be a viable method of forming subdwarf B (sdB) stars both in the field and in clusters, especially when the metallicity is high.

Trapped atomic condensates with anisotropic interactions

We study the ground state properties of trapped atomic condensates with electric field induced dipole-dipole interactions. A rigorous method for constructing the pseudo potential in the spirit of ladder approximation is developed for general non-spherical (polarized) particles interacting anisotropically. We discuss interesting features not previously considered for currently available alkali condensates. In addition to provide a quantitative assessment for controlling atomic interactions with electric fields, our investigation may also shed new light into the macroscopic coherence properties of the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of dilute interacting atoms.
