An integral fluctuation theorem for systems with unidirectional transitions

The fluctuations of a Markovian jump process with one or more unidirectional transitions, where $R_{ij} >0$ but $R_{ji} =0$, are studied. We find that such systems satisfy an integral fluctuation theorem. The fluctuating quantity satisfying the theorem is a sum of the entropy produced in the bidirectional transitions and a dynamical contribution which depends on the residence times in the states connected by the unidirectional transitions. The convergence of the integral fluctuation theorem is studied numerically, and found to show the same qualitative features as in systems exhibiting microreversibility.

Non-equilibrium steady state and induced currents of a mesoscopically-glassy system: interplay of resistor-network theory and Sinai physics

We introduce an explicit solution for the non-equilibrium steady state (NESS) of a ring that is coupled to a thermal bath, and is driven by an external hot source with log-wide distribution of couplings. Having time scales that stretch over several decades is similar to glassy systems. Consequently there is a wide range of driving intensities where the NESS is like that of a random walker in a biased Brownian landscape. We investigate the resulting statistics of the induced current $I$. For a single ring we discuss how $sign(I)$ fluctuates as the intensity of the driving is increased, while for an ensemble of rings we highlight the fingerprints of Sinai physics on the $abs(I)$ distribution.

No-pumping theorem for many particle stochastic pumps

Stochastic pumps are models of artificial molecular machines which are driven by periodic time variation of parameters, such as site and barrier energies. The no-pumping theorem states that no directed motion is generated by variation of only site or barrier energies [S. Rahav, J. Horowitz, and C. Jarzynski, Phys. Rev. Lett., 101, 140602 (2008)]. We study stochastic pumps of several interacting particles and demonstrate that the net current of particles satisfy an additional no- pumping theorem.

Time-dependent Hamiltonians with 100% evolution speed efficiency

The evolution speed in projective Hilbert space is considered for Hermitian Hamiltonians and for non-Hermitian (NH) ones. Based on the Hilbert-Schmidt norm and the spectral norm of a Hamiltonian, resource-related upper bounds on the evolution speed are constructed. These bounds are valid also for NH Hamiltonians and they are illustrated for an optical NH Hamiltonian and for a non-Hermitian $\mathcal{PT}-$symmetric matrix Hamiltonian. Furthermore, the concept of quantum speed efficiency is introduced as measure of the system resources directly spent on the motion in the projective Hilbert space. A recipe for the construction of time-dependent Hamiltonians which ensure 100% speed efficiency is given. Generally these efficient Hamiltonians are NH but there is a Hermitian efficient Hamiltonian as well. Finally, the extremal case of a non-Hermitian non-diagonalizable Hamiltonian with vanishing energy difference is shown to produce a 100% efficient evolution with minimal resources consumption.

The non-equilibrium steady state of sparse systems with nontrivial topology

We study the steady state of a multiply-connected system that is driven out of equilibrium by a sparse perturbation. The prototype example is an $N$-site ring coupled to a thermal bath, driven by a stationary source that induces transitions with log-wide distributed rates. An induced current arises, which is controlled by the strength of the driving, and an associated topological term appears in the expression for the energy absorption rate. Due to the sparsity, the crossover from linear response to saturation is mediated by an intermediate regime, where the current is exponentially small in $\sqrt{N}$, which is related to the work of Sinai on "random walk in a random environment".

Multidimensional measures of impulsively driven stochastic systems based on the Kullback-Leibler distance

By subjecting a dynamical system to a series of short pulses and varying several time delays we can obtain multidimensional characteristic measures of the system. Multidimensional Kullback-Leibler response function (KLRF), which are based on the Kullback-Leibler distance between the initial and final states, are defined. We compare the KLRF, which are nonlinear in the probability density, with ordinary response functions (ORF) obtained from the expectation value of a dynamical variable, which are linear. We show that the KLRF encode different level of information regarding the system's dynamics. For overdamped stochastic dynamics two dimensional KLRF shows a qualitatively different variation with the time delays between pulses, depending on whether the system is initially in a steady state, or in thermal equilibrium.

Gaussian phase-space representation of Fermion dynamics; Beyond the time-dependent-Hartree-Fock approximation

A Gaussian operator representation for the many body density matrix of fermionic systems, developed by Corney and Drummond [Phys. Rev. Lett, v93, 260401 (2004)], is used to derive approximate decoupling schemes for their dynamics. In this approach the reduced single electron density matrix elements serve as stochastic variables which satisfy an exact Fokker-Planck equation. The number of variables scales as ~N^2 rather than ~exp(N) with the basis set size, and the time dependent Hartree Fock approximation (TDHF) is recovered in the "classical" limit. An approximate closed set of equations of motion for the one and two-particle reduced density matrices, provides a direct generalization of the TDHF.

Directed flow in non-adiabatic stochastic pumps

We analyze the operation of a molecular machine driven by the non-adiabatic variation of external parameters. We derive a formula for the integrated flow from one configuration to another, obtain a "no-pumping theorem" for cyclic processes with thermally activated transitions, and show that in the adiabatic limit the pumped current is given by a geometric expression.

Fluctuation relations and coarse-graining

We consider the application of fluctuation relations to the dynamics of coarse-grained systems, as might arise in a hypothetical experiment in which a system is monitored with a low-resolution measuring apparatus. We analyze a stochastic, Markovian jump process with a specific structure that lends itself naturally to coarse-graining. A perturbative analysis yields a reduced stochastic jump process that approximates the coarse-grained dynamics of the original system. This leads to a non-trivial fluctuation relation that is approximately satisfied by the coarse-grained dynamics. We illustrate our results by computing the large deviations of a particular stochastic jump process. Our results highlight the possibility that observed deviations from fluctuation relations might be due to the presence of unobserved degrees of freedom.

Universal parametric correlations in the classical limit of quantum transport

Quantum corrections to transport through a chaotic ballistic cavity are known to be universal. The universality not only applies to the magnitude of quantum corrections, but also to their dependence on external parameters, such as the Fermi energy or an applied magnetic field. Here we consider such parameter dependence of quantum transport in a ballistic chaotic cavity in the semiclassical limit obtained by sending Planck's constant to zero without changing the classical dynamics of the open cavity. In this limit quantum corrections are shown to have a universal parametric dependence which is not described by random matrix theory.

Semiclassical theory of a quantum pump

In a quantum charge pump, the periodic variation of two parameters that affect the phase of the electronic wavefunction causes the flow of a direct current. The operating mechanism of a quantum pump is based on quantum interference, the phases of interfering amplitudes being modulated by the external parameters. In a ballistic quantum dot, there is a minimum time before which quantum interference can not occur: the Ehrenfest time. Here we calculate the current pumped through a ballistic quantum dot when the Ehrenfest time is comparable to the mean dwell time. Remarkably, we find that the pumped current has a component that is not suppressed if the Ehrenfest time is much larger than the mean dwell time.

The spectral form factor near the Ehrenfest-time

We calculate the Ehrenfest-time dependence of the leading quantum correction to the spectral form factor of a ballistic chaotic cavity using periodic orbit theory. For the case of broken time-reversal symmetry, our result differs from that previously obtained using field-theoretic methods [Tian and Larkin, Phys. Rev. B 70, 035305 (2004)]. The discrepancy shows that short-time regularization procedures dramatically affect physics near the Ehrenfest-time.

Towards a semiclassical justification of the `effective random matrix theory' for transport through ballistic chaotic quantum dots

The scattering matrix S of a ballistic chaotic cavity is the direct sum of a `classical' and a `quantum' part, which describe the scattering of channels with typical dwell time smaller and larger than the Ehrenfest time, respectively. According to the `effective random matrix theory' of Silvestrov, Goorden, and Beenakker [Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 116801 (2003)], statistical averages involving the quantum-mechanical scattering matrix are given by random matrix theory. While this effective random matrix theory is known not to be applicable for quantum interference corrections to transport, which appear to subleading order in the number of scattering channels N, it is believed to correctly describe quantum transport to leading order in N. We here partially verify this belief, by comparing the predictions of the effective random matrix theory for the ensemble averages of polynomial functions of S and S^dagger of degree 2, 4, and 6 to a semiclassical calculation.

Ehrenfest time and the coherent backscattering off ballistic cavities

If the Ehrenfest time tau_E of a ballistic cavity is not negligible in comparison to its dwell time tau_D, the weak localization correction to the cavity's transmission is suppressed proportional to exp(-tau_E/tau_D). At the same time, quantum interference enhances the probability of reflection into the mode of incidence by a factor two. This `enhanced backscattering' does not depend on the Ehrenfest time. We show that, in addition to the diagonal enhanced backscattering, there are off-diagonal contributions to coherent backscattering that become relevant if the Ehrenfest time is not negligible.

A semiclassical theory of the Ehrenfest-time dependence of quantum transport in ballistic quantum dots

We present a trajectory-based semiclassical calculation of the Ehrenfest-time dependence of the weak localization correction and the universal conductance fluctuations of a ballistic quantum dot with ideal point contacts. While the weak localization correction is proportional to exp(-tau_E/tau_D), where tau_E and tau_D are the dot's Ehrenfest time and dwell time, respectively, the variance of the conductance is found to be independent of tau_E. The latter is in agreement with numerical simulations of the quantum kicked rotator [Tworzydlo et al., Phys. Rev. B 69, 165318 (2004) and Jacquod and Sukhorukov, Phys. Rev. Lett. 92, 116801 (2004)].

Classical limit of transport in quantum kicked maps

We investigate the behavior of weak localization, conductance fluctuations, and shot noise of a chaotic scatterer in the semiclassical limit. Time resolved numerical results, obtained by truncating the time-evolution of a kicked quantum map after a certain number of iterations, are compared to semiclassical theory. Considering how the appearance of quantum effects is delayed as a function of the Ehrenfest time gives a new method to compare theory and numerical simulations. We find that both weak localization and shot noise agree with semiclassical theory, which predicts exponential suppression with increasing Ehrenfest time. However, conductance fluctuations exhibit different behavior, with only a slight dependence on the Ehrenfest time.

Mesoscopic anisotropic magnetoconductance fluctuations in ferromagnets

The conductance of a ferromagnetic particle depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization with respect to the direction of current flow. This phenomenon is known as "anisotropic magnetoresistance". Quantum interference leads to an additional, random dependence of the conductance on the magnetization direction. These "anisotropic magnetoresistance fluctuations" are caused by spin-orbit scattering, which couples the electron motion to the exchange field in the ferromagnet. We report a calculation of the dependence of the conductance autocorrelation function on the rotation angle of the magnetization direction.

Ehrenfest-time dependence of weak localization in open quantum dots

Semiclassical theory predicts that the weak localization correction to the conductance of a ballistic chaotic cavity is suppressed if the Ehrenfest time exceeds the dwell time in the cavity [I. L. Aleiner and A. I. Larkin, Phys. Rev. B {\bf 54}, 14424 (1996)]. We report numerical simulations of weak localization in the open quantum kicked rotator that confirm this prediction. Our results disagree with the `effective random matrix theory' of transport through ballistic chaotic cavities.
