Necessary and sufficient condition for neutral-type delay systems: Polynomial approximations

A new necessary and sufficient stability test in a tractable number of operations for linear neutral-type delay systems is introduced. It is developed in the Lyapunov-Krasovskii framework via functionals with prescribed derivatives. The necessary conditions, which stem from substituting any polynomial approximation of the functional argument, reduce to a quadratic form of monomials whose matrix is independent of the coefficients of the approximation under consideration. In the particular case of Chebyshev polynomials, the functional approximation error is quantified, leading to an estimate of the order of approximation such that the positive semi-definiteness of the functional is verified. Some examples illustrate the obtained results.

Dominant-Pole Placement for Predictor Synthesis

This article analyzes the high-gain prediction approach for nonlinear input-delay systems. The problem is discussed in the light of weighted homogeneity and input-to-state stability. The canonical form for uniformly observable nonlinear systems allows tuning the spectrum of the linear part by multiplicity-induced dominance and ensures closed-loop system input-to-state stability using the descriptor method for Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. Due to the trade-off between delay and gain margin, a limitation of high-gain results for time-delay systems. The limitation is overcome by using a cascade of sub-predictors. A comparative analysis is also presented, showing that our proposal achieves a better trade-off between delay and gain margin.

Lyapunov stability tests for linear time-delay systems

An overview of stability conditions in terms of the Lyapunov matrix for time-delay systems is presented. The main results and proof are presented in details for the case of systems with multiple delays. The state of the art, ongoing research and potential extensions to other classes of delay systems are discussed.

Technical comments on the optimal control for linear distributed time-delay

The solution to the infinite horizon optimal control problem for linear distributed time-delay systems is presented. The proposal is based on the use of the Cauchy solution for distributed time-delay systems. In contrast with previous results (for punctual time delay systems), the form of the functional and its properties are formally justified. An important property is demonstrated: the Bellman functional admits upper and lower bounds, thus it is proved to be positive definite. Additionally, some experimental results on a temperature process are presented.

Necessary and sufficient stability conditions for integral delay systems

A Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional with prescribed derivative whose construction does not require the stability of the system is introduced. It leads to the presentation of stability/instability theorems. By evaluating the functional at initial conditions depending on the fundamental matrix we are able to present necessary and sufficient stability conditions expressed exclusively in terms of the delay Lyapunov matrix for integral delay systems. Some examples illustrate and validate the stability conditions.

Estimates for solutions of homogeneous time-delay systems: Comparison of Lyapunov-Krasovskii and Lyapunov-Razumikhin techniques

In this contribution, the estimates for the response of time delay systems with nonlinear homogeneous right-hand side of degree strictly greater than one are constructed. The existing results obtained via the Lyapunov--Razumikhin approach are reminded. Their proofs, revisited in the appendix, lead to explicit expressions of the involved constants. Based on a recently introduced Lyapunov--Krasovskii functional and known estimates of the domain of attraction, we present new estimates of the system response. We compare both approaches and discuss the illustrative examples.

Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals for some classes of nonlinear time delay systems

In this contribution, we study an homogeneous class of nonlinear time delay systems with time-varying perturbations. Using the Lyapunov-Krasovskii approach, we introduce a functional that leads to perturbation conditions matching those obtained previously in the Razumikhin framework. The functionals are applied to the estimation of the domain of attraction and of the system solutions. An illustrative example is given.

Estimates for weighted homogeneous delay systems: A Lyapunov-Krasovskii-Razumikhin approach

In this paper, we present estimates for solutions and for the attraction domain of the trivial solution for systems with delayed and nonlinear weighted homogeneous right-hand side of positive degree. The results are achieved via a generalization of the Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional construction presented recently for homogeneous systems with standard dilation. Along with the classical approach for the calculation of the estimates within the Lyapunov-Krasovskii framework, we develop a novel approach which combines the use of Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals with ideas of the Razumikhin framework. More precisely, a lower bound for the functional on a special set of functions inspired by the Razumikhin condition is constructed, and an additional condition imposed on the solution of the comparison equation ensures that this bound can be used to estimate all solutions in a certain neighbourhood of the trivial one. An example shows that this approach yields less conservative estimates in comparison with the classical one.

Observer-based predictor for a SIR model with delays

We propose an observer for a SIR epidemic model. The observer is then uplifted into a predictor to compensate for time delays in the input and the output. Tuning criteria are given for tuning gains of the predictor, while the estimation-error stability is ensured using Lyapunov-Krasovskii functionals. The predictor's performance is evaluated in combination with a time-optimal control. We show that the predictor nearly recovers the performance level of the delay-free system.

On the Lyapunov Matrix of Linear Delay Difference Equations in Continuous Time

The fundamental matrix and the delay Lyapunov matrix of linear delay difference equations are introduced. Some properties of the Lyapunov matrix, and the jump discontinuities of its derivative are proven, leading to its construction in the case of single delay or commensurate delays. An approximation is proposed for the non-commensurate case.

Passivity-based PI control of first-order systems with I/O communication delays: A complete sigma-stability analysis

The PI control of first-order linear passive systems through a delayed communication channel is revisited in light of the relative stability concept called sigma-stability. Treating the delayed communication channel as a transport PDE, the passivity of the overall control-loop is guaranteed, resulting in a closed-loop system of neutral nature. Spectral methods are then applied to the system to obtain a complete stability map. In particular, we perform the D-subdivision method to declare the exact sigma-stability regions in the space of PI parameters. This framework is then utilized to analytically determine the maximum achievable exponential decay rate of the system while achieving the PI tuning as an explicit function of the decay rate and the system parameters.
