Combined approach of density functional theory and quantum Monte Carlo method to electron correlation in dilute magnetic semiconductors

We present a realistic study for electronic and magnetic properties in dilute magnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As. A multi-orbital Haldane-Anderson model parameterized by density-functional calculations is presented and solved with the Hirsch-Fye quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Results well reproduce experimental results in the dilute limit. When the chemical potential is located between the top of the valence band and an impurity bound state, a long-range ferromagnetic correlations between the impurities, mediated by antiferromagnetic impurity-host couplings, are drastically developed. We observe an anisotropic character in local density of states at the impurity-bound-state energy, which is consistent with the STM measurements. The presented combined approach thus offers a firm starting point for realistic calculations of the various family of dilute magnetic semiconductors.

Enhanced spin Hall effect by resonant skew scattering in orbital-selective Kondo effect

The enhanced spin Hall effect in Au metal due to the resonant skew scattering is studied with first-principles band structure calculations. Especially the gigantic spin Hall angle $γ_S \cong 0.1$ observed recently (T.Seki et al., Nature Materials {\bf 7}, 125 (2008)) is attributed to the orbital-dependent Kondo effect of Fe in the Au host metal, where the $t_{2g}$-orbitals are in the mixed-valence region while $e_g$-orbitals are in the Kondo limit. The enhanced spin-orbit interaction by the electron correlation in the $t_{2g}$-orbitals leads to the gigantic spin Hall effect. Impurities with 5d orbitals are also discussed.

Inter-impurity and impurity-host magnetic correlations in semiconductors with low-density transition-metal impurities

Experiments on (Ga,Mn)As in the low-doping insulating phase have shown evidence for the presence of an impurity band at 110 meV above the valence band. The motivation of this paper is to investigate the role of the impurity band in determining the magnetic correlations in the low-doping regime of the dilute magnetic semiconductors. For this purpose, we present results on the Haldane-Anderson model of transition-metal impurities in a semiconductor host, which were obtained by using the Hirsch-Fye Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) algorithm. In particular, we present results on the impurity-impurity and impurity-host magnetic correlations in two and three-dimensional semiconductors with quadratic band dispersions. In addition, we use the tight-binding approximation with experimentally-determined parameters to obtain the host band structure and the impurity-host hybridization for Mn impurities in GaAs. When the chemical potential is located between the top of the valence band and the impurity bound state (IBS), the impurities exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) correlations with the longest range. We show that these FM correlations are generated by the antiferromagnetic coupling of the host electronic spins to the impurity magnetic moment. Finally, we obtain an IBS energy of 100 meV, which is consistent with the experimental value of 110 meV, by combining the QMC technique with the tight-binding approach for a Mn impurity in GaAs.

Effects of the crystal structure on the ferromagnetic correlations in ZnO with magnetic impurities

We study the ferromagnetism in the compound (Zn,Mn)O within the Haldane-Anderson impurity model by using the quantum Monte Carlo technique and the tight-binding approximation for determining the host band-structure and the impurity-host hybridization. This computational approach allows us to determine how the host crystal structure influences the impurity bound state, which plays an important role in the development of the ferromagnetic (FM) correlations between the impurities. We find that the FM correlations are strongly influenced by the crystal structure. In particular, in p-type (Zn,Mn)O, we observe the development of FM correlations with an extended range at low temperatures for wurtzite and zincblende crystal structures. However, for the rocksalt structure no FM correlations are observed between the impurities. In addition, in n-type ZnO with magnetic impurities, the impurity bound state and FM correlations are not found.

Enhancement of phonon effects in photoexcited states of one-dimensional Mott insulators

We examine how the electron correlation affects the electron-phonon (EP) interaction in the linear optical absorption spectrum of the one-dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard-Holstein model. A density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculation shows that the effect of the EP interaction on an exciton is enhanced by increasing the on-site Coulomb repulsion. This enhancement is in contrast to the effect of the EP interaction on the ground state where the Peierls instability is suppressed by the on-site Coulomb repulsion. The DMRG data with the EP interaction fit with absorption experiments in 1D cuprates better than those for the extended Hubbard model.

Electron-phonon coupling and spin-charge separation in one-dimensional Mott insulators

We examine the single-particle excitation spectrum in the one-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein model at half-filling by performing the dynamical density matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) calculation. The DDMRG results are interpreted as superposition of spectra for a spinless carrier dressed with phonons. The superposition is a consequence of robustness of the spin-charge separation against electron-phonon coupling. The separation is in contrast to the coupling between phonon and spin degrees of freedom in two-dimensional systems. We discuss implication of the results of the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on SrCuO${}_{2}$.

Temperature dependence of spinon and holon excitations in one-dimensional Mott insulators

Motivated by the recent angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements on one-dimensional Mott insulators, SrCuO${}_{2}$ and Na${}_{0.96}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{5}$, we examine the single-particle spectral weight of the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at half-filling. We are particularly interested in the temperature dependence of the spinon and holon excitations. For this reason, we have performed the dynamical density matrix renormalization group and determinantal quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations for the single-particle spectral weight of the 1D Hubbard model. In the QMC data, the spinon and holon branches become observable at temperatures where the short-range antiferromagnetic correlations develop. At these temperatures, the spinon branch grows rapidly. In the light of the numerical results, we discuss the spinon and holon branches observed by the ARPES experiments on SrCuO${}_{2}$. These numerical results are also in agreement with the temperature dependence of the ARPES results on Na${}_{0.96}$V${}_{2}$O${}_{5}$.

Nonequilibrium Kondo Effect in a Quantum Dot Coupled to Ferromagnetic Leads

We study the Kondo effect in the electron transport through a quantum dot coupled to ferromagnetic leads, using a real-time diagrammatic technique which provides a systematic description of the nonequilibrium dynamics of a system with strong local electron correlations. We evaluate the theory in an extension of the `resonant tunneling approximation', introduced earlier, by introducing the self-energy of the off-diagonal component of the reduced propagator in spin space. In this way we develop a charge and spin conserving approximation that accounts not only for Kondo correlations but also for the spin splitting and spin accumulation out of equilibrium. We show that the Kondo resonances, split by the applied bias voltage, may be spin polarized. A left-right asymmetry in the coupling strength and/or spin polarization of the electrodes significantly affects both the spin accumulation and the weight of the split Kondo resonances out of equilibrium. The effects are observable in the nonlinear differential conductance. We also discuss the influence of decoherence on the Kondo resonance in the frame of the real-time formulation.

Crossed Andreev Reflection in Structures Consisting of a Superconductor with Ferromagnetic Leads

A theory of crossed Andreev reflection in structures consisting of a superconductor with two ferromagnetic leads is presented. The electric current due to the crossed Andreev reflection strongly depends on the relative orientation of the magnetization of two ferromagnetic leads. It is shown that the dependence of the electric current and the magnetoresistance on the distance between two ferromagnetic leads is understood by considering the interference between the wave functions in ferromagnets. The current and the magnetoresistance are calculated as functions of the exchange field and the height of the interfacial barriers.

Resonant two-magnon Raman scattering in two-dimensional and ladder-type Mott insulators

We investigate the resonant two-magnon Raman scattering in the two-dimensional (2D) and ladder-type Mott insulators by using a half-filled Hubbard model in the strong coupling limit. By performing numerical diagonalization calculations for small clusters, we find that the model can reproduce the experimental features in the 2D that the Raman intensity is enhanced when the incoming photon energy is not near the absorption edge but well above it. In the ladder-type Mott insulators, the Raman intensity is found to resonate with absorption spectrum in contrast to the 2D system. The difference between 2D and the ladder systems is explained by taking into account the fact that the ground state in 2D is a spin-ordered state while that in ladder is a spin-gapped one.

Andreev Reflection in Ferromagnet/Superconductor/Ferromagnet Double Junction Systems

We present a theory of Andreev reflection in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet double junction system. The spin polarized quasiparticles penetrate to the superconductor in the range of penetration depth from the interface by the Andreev reflection. When the thickness of the superconductor is comparable to or smaller than the penetration depth, the spin polarized quasiparticles pass through the superconductor and therefore the electric current depends on the relative orientation of magnetizations of the ferromagnets. The dependences of the magnetoresistance on the thickness of the superconductor, temperature, the exchange field of the ferromagnets and the height of the interfacial barriers are analyzed. Our theory explains recent experimental results well.

Nonequilibrium spin fluctuations in single-electron transistors

We show that nonequilibrium spin fluctuations significantly influence the electronic transport in a single-electron transistor, when the spin relaxation on the island is slow compared to other relaxation processes, and when size effects play a role. To describe spin fluctuations we generalize the `orthodox' tunneling theory to take into account the electron spin, and show that the transition between consecutive charge states can occur via a high-spin state. This significantly modifies the shape of Coulomb steps and gives rise to additional resonances at low temperatures. Recently some of our predictions were confirmed by Fujisawa et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 236802 (2002)], who demonstrated experimentally the importance of nonequilibrum spin fluctuations in transport through quantum dots.

Nonlinear Optical Response in two-dimensional Mott Insulators

We study the third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility $χ^{(3)}$ and photoexcited states of two-dimensional (2D) Mott insulators by using an effective model in the strong-coupling limit of a half-filled Hubbard model. In the numerically exact diagonalization calculations on finite-size clusters, we find that the coupling of charge and spin degrees of freedom plays a crucial role in the distribution of the dipole-allowed states with odd parity and the dipole-forbidden states with even parity in the photoexcited states. This is in contrast with the photoexcited states in one dimension, where the charge and spin degrees of freedom are decoupled. In the third-harmonic generation (THG) spectrum, main contribution is found to come from the process of three-photon resonance associated with the odd-parity states. As a result, the two-photon resonance process is less pronounced in the THG spectrum. The calculated THG spectrum is compared with recent experimental data. We also find that $χ^{(3)}$ with cross-polarized configuration of pump and probe photons shows spectral distributions similar to $χ^{(3)}$ with co-polarized configuration, although the weight is small. These findings will help the analyses of the experimental data of $χ^{(3)}$ in the 2D Mott insulators.

Electronic States and Superconductivity in Multi-layer High-Tc Cuprates

We study electronic states of multilayer cuprates in the normal phases as functions of the number of CuO_2 planes and the doping rate. The resonating valence bond wave function and the Gutzwiller approximation are used for a two-dimensional multilayer t-t'-t''-J model. We calculate the electron-removal spectral functions at (π,0) in the CuO_2 plane next to the surface to understand the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) spectra. We find that the trilayer spectrum is narrower than the bilayer spectrum but is wider than the monolayer spectrum. In the tri- and tetralayer systems, the outer CuO_2 plane has different superconducting amplitude from the inner CuO_2 plane, while each layer in the bilayer systems has same amplitude. The recent ARPES and NMR experiments are discussed in the light of the present theory.

Spin accumulation in ferromagnetic single-electron transistors in the cotunneling regime

We propose a new method of direct detection of spin accumulation, which overcomes problems of previous measurement schemes. A spin dependent current in a single-electron transistor with ferromagnetic electrodes leads to spin accumulation on the metallic island. The resulting spin-splitting of the electrochemical potentials of the island, because of an additional shift by the charging energy, can be detected from the spacing between two resonances in the current-voltage characteristics. The results were obtained in the framework of a real-time diagrammatic approach which allows to study higher order (co-)tunneling processes in the strong nonequlibrium situation.

Resonant X-ray Scattering in Manganites - Study of Orbital Degree of Freedom -

Orbital degree of freedom of electrons and its interplay with spin, charge and lattice degrees of freedom are one of the central issues in colossal magnetoresistive manganites. The orbital degree of freedom has until recently remained hidden, since it does not couple directly to most of experimental probes. Development of synchrotron light sources has changed the situation; by the resonant x-ray scattering (RXS) technique the orbital ordering has successfully been observed . In this article, we review progress in the recent studies of RXS in manganites. We start with a detailed review of the RXS experiments applied to the orbital ordered manganites and other correlated electron systems. We derive the scattering cross section of RXS where the tensor character of the atomic scattering factor (ASF) with respect to the x-ray polarization is stressed. Microscopic mechanisms of the anisotropic tensor character of ASF is introduced and numerical results of ASF and the scattering intensity are presented. The azimuthal angle scan is a unique experimental method to identify RXS from the orbital degree of freedom. A theory of the azimuthal angle and polarization dependence of the RXS intensity is presented. The theoretical results show good agreement with the experiments in manganites. Apart from the microscopic description of ASF, a theoretical framework of RXS to relate directly to the 3d orbital is presented. The scattering cross section is represented by the correlation function of the pseudo-spin operator for the orbital degree of freedom. A theory is extended to the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering and methods to observe excitations of the orbital degree of freedom are proposed.

Re-examination of orbital ordering in LaMnO$_3$: Electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions

The interactions between $e_g$ orbitals in neighboring sites are investigated in LaMnO$_3$ by taking into account virtual exchange of electrons and phonons. The spin and orbital ordering temperatures and the spin wave dispersion relation are calculated. We find that the orbital ordering is mainly caused by the electronic interactions and that the Jahn-Teller coupling is much smaller than that reported previously. We propose that the elastic constant shows a characteristic change at the N{é}el temperature by the spin and orbital coupling and the higher-order Jahn-Teller coupling.

Andreev Reflection in Narrow Ferromagnet/Superconductor Point Contacts

The Andreev reflection of narrow ferromagnet/superconductor point contacts is theoretically studied. We show that the conductance quantization depends on whether the contact region is superconducting or ferromagnetic as well as on the strength of the exchange field in the ferromagnet. The Andreev reflection of the ferromagnetic contact is more suppressed than that of the superconducting contact. We also show that the conductance-voltage curve has a bump at zero bias-voltage if there is no interfacial-scattering. On the contrary, the conductance-voltage curve shows a dip if the system has an interfacial-scattering.
