Spin-relaxation and magnetoresistance in FM/SC/FM tunnel junctions

The effect of spin relaxation on tunnel magnetoresistance (TMR) in a ferromagnet/superconductor/ferromagnet (FM/SC/FM) double tunnel junction is theoretically studied. The spin accumulation in SC is determined by balancing of the spin-injection rate and the spin-relaxation rate. In the superconducting state, the spin-relaxation time becomes longer with decreasing temperature, resulting in a rapid increase of TMR. The TMR of FM/SC/FM junctions provides a useful probe to extract information about spin-relaxation in superconductors.

Systematic Study of Magnetic Interactions in Insulating Cuprates

The magnetic interactions in one-dimensional, two-dimensional (2D) and ladder cuprates are evaluated systematically by using small Cu-O clusters. We find that the superexchange interaction J between nearest neighbor Cu spins strongly depends on Cu-O structure through the Madelung potential, and in 2D and ladder cuprates there is a four-spin interaction Jcyc, with magnitude of 10% of J. We show that Jcyc has a strong influence on the magnetic excitation in the high-energy region of 2D cuprates.

Theory of Orbital Ordering, Fluctuation and Resonant X-ray Scattering in Manganites

A theory of resonant x-ray scattering in perovskite manganites is developed by applying the group theory to the correlation functions of the pseudospin operators for the orbital degree of freedom. It is shown that static and dynamical informations of the orbital state are directly obtained from the elastic, diffuse and inelastic scatterings due to the tensor character of the scattering factor. We propose that the interaction and its anisotropy between orbitals are directly identified by the intensity contour of the diffuse scattering in the momentum space.

Conductance Quantization and Magnetoresistance in Magnetic Point Contacts

We theoretically study the electron transport through a magnetic point contact (PC) with special attention to the effect of an atomic scale domain wall (DW). The spin precession of a conduction electron is forbidden in such an atomic scale DW and the sequence of quantized conductances depends on the relative orientation of magnetizations between left and right electrodes. The magnetoresistance is strongly enhanced for the narrow PC and oscillates with the conductance.

Magnetic Interaction in Insulating Cuprates

We examine two-spin (2S) and cyclic four-spin (4S) magnetic interactions in insulating ladder and two-dimensional (2D) cuprates. By a comparison of eigenstates between d-p and Heisenberg models, we evaluate magnitudes of these interactions. We find that the 4S interaction is $\sim$10% of nearest neighboring 2S interaction, and a diagonal 2S interaction is considerably small. The 4S interaction for a ladder cuprate is larger than that for 2D one, and plays an important role in the low-energy excitation. The Heisenberg ladder with the obtained 2S and 4S interactions reproduces very well the experimental result of the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility.

Orbital Ordering and Resonant X-ray Scattering in Layered Manganites

In layered manganites with orbital and charge orderings, the degeneracy of the Mn $4p$ orbitals as well as the $3d$ ones is lifted by the effects of the $4p$ bands and the local Coulomb interactions. We formulate the atomic scattering factor for the resonant x-ray scattering in the memory function method by taking into account these effects on an equal footing. It is shown that the polarization dependences of the scattering intensities at the orbital and charge superlattice reflections observed in LaSr$_{2}$Mn$_2$O$_7$ are caused by the local and itinerant characters of $4p$ electrons, respectively. We examine the type of the orbital ordered state.

Theory of Orbital Excitation and Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering in Manganites

We study theoretically the collective orbital excitation named orbital wave in the orbital ordered manganites. The dispersion relation of the orbital wave is affected by the static spin structure through the coupling between spin and orbital degrees of freedom. As a probe to detect the dispersion relation, we propose two possible methods by utilizing resonant inelastic x-ray scattering. The transition probability of the orbital wave scattering is formulated, and the momentum and polarization dependences of the structure factor are calculated in several types of the orbital and spin structures. The elastic x-ray scattering in the L-edge case to observe the orbital ordering is also discussed.

Spin-Dependent Coulomb Blockade in Ferromagnet/Normal-Metal/Ferromagnet Double Tunnel Junctions

We study theoretically the spin-dependent transport in ferromagnet/normal-metal/ferromagnet double tunnel junctions by special attention to cotunneling in the Coulomb blockade region. The spin accumulation caused by cotunneling squeezes the Coulomb blockade region when the magnetizations in the ferromagnetic electrodes are antiparallel. Outside the squeezed Coulomb blockade region, we propose a new anomalous region, where the sequential tunneling in one of the spin bands is suppressed by the Coulomb blockade and that in the other is not. In this region, the tunnel magnetoresistance oscillates as a function of bias voltage. The temperature dependences of the tunnel magnetoresistance and the magnitude of the spin accumulation are calculated.

Range dependence of interlayer exchange coupling

We have considered the effects of non magnetic impurities and interface roughness on the interlayer coupling between magnetic layers in metallic multilayers. The two types of defects alter the interlayer coupling in quite different ways. Elastic electron scattering by impurities in the non magnetic spacer layers between magnetic layers produces an exponential decay of the coupling with a characteristic decay length that is considerably longer than the ``global'' transport mean free path for the spacer layer with its surrounding interfaces. Interfacial roughness leads to an attenuation of the coupling that is related to the width of the roughness in relation to the Fermi wavelength; roughness does not alter the range dependence of the coupling. For certain types of electrical transport, e.g., for current perpendicular to the plane of the layers, the scattering from interface roughness and impurities in the spacer layers contribute on an equal footing to the exponential decay of the electron propagators, i.e., global mean free path. We show that interface roughness and impurities in the spacer layer affect the interlayer coupling differently.

Polarization Dependence of Anomalous X-ray Scattering in Orbital Ordered Manganites

In order to determine types of the orbital ordering in manganites, we study theoretically the polarization dependence of the anomalous X-ray scattering which is caused by the anisotropy of the scattering factor. The general formulae of the scattering intensity in the experimental optical system is derived and the atomic scattering factor is calculated in the microscopic electronic model. By using the results, the X-ray scattering intensity in several types of the orbital ordering is numerically calculated as a function of azimuthal and analyzer angles.

``Flux'' state in double exchange model

We study the ground state properties of the double-exchange systems. The phase factor of the hopping matrix elements arises from $t_{2g}$ spin texture in two or more dimensions. A novel ``flux'' state is stabilized against the canted antiferromagnetic and spiral spin states. In a certain range of hole doping, the phase separation occurs between the ``flux'' state and antiferromagnetic states. Constructing a trial state which provides the rigorous upper bound on the ground state, we show that the metallic canted antiferromagnetic state is not stable in the double exchange model.

Effect of Spin Gap on Single-Hole Excitation Spectrum in the One-Dimensional t-J-J'Model

We examine the effect of spin gap on single-hole spectral function in the one-dimensional t-J-J'model. At J'/J=1/2, where a dimer state is the ground state, an analytic expression is derived for J/t \to 0. At finite values of J/t, the numerical diagonalizations for finite-size clusters are performed. In contrast to the gapless case, we find that (i) the dispersion becomes symmetric around k=π/2, (ii) the singularity of the holon band is strongly suppressed, and (iii) the quasi-particle weight Z_{h} becomes finite at finite J/t. The feature (iii) is related to the presence of a bound state of the doped hole and an unpaired spin.

Electronic States and Excitation Spectra of Copper Oxides with Ladder and/or Chain

Recently the superconductivity has been reported in the copper oxides (Sr,Ca)$_{14}$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ with ladders and edge-sharing chains under pressure. In order to understand the mechanism of the superconductivity, it is crucial to clarify the distribution of self-doped holes. From the analysis of the optical conductivity by ionic model and exact diagonalization method, we confirm that with substituting Ca for Sr, the self-doped holes are transferred from the chains to the ladders. We also examine the electronic states of edge-sharing chain in a variety of copper oxides, and derive the effective Hamiltonian. The dependences of the magnetic interactions between Cu ions and of the hopping energies of the Zhang-Rice singlet on the bond angle of Cu-O-Cu are discussed.

Electronic States and Magnetic Propertis of Edge-sharing Cu-O Chains

The electronic states and magnetic properties for the copper oxides containing edge-sharing Cu-O chains such as Li$_2$CuO$_2$, La$_6$Ca$_8$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ and CuGeO$_3$ are systematically studied. The optical conductivity $σ(ω)$ and the temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ for single crystalline samples Li$_2$CuO$_2$ are measured as a reference system and analyzed by using the exact diagonalization method for small Cu-O clusters. It is shown that the spectral distribution of $σ(ω)$ is different between edge-sharing and corner-sharing Cu-O-Cu bonds. The charge transfer gap in edge-sharing chains is larger than that of high-$T_{c}$ cuprates. The exchange interaction between nearest-neighbor copper ions in edge-sharing chains $J_1$ depends sensitively on the Cu-O-Cu bond angles. In addition to $J_1$, the exchange interaction between next-nearest-neighbor copper ions $J_2$ has sufficient contribution to the magnetic properties. We calculate $J_1$ and $J_2$ for all the copper oxides containing edge-sharing Cu-O chains and discuss the magnetic properties.

Theory of Anomalous X-ray Scattering in Orbital Ordered Manganites

We study theoretically the anomalous X-ray scattering as a new probe to observe the orbital orderings and excitations in perovskite manganites. The scattering matrix is given by the virtual electronic excitations from Mn $1s$ level to unoccupied Mn $4p$ level. We find that orbital dependence of the Coulomb interaction between Mn $3d$ and Mn $4p$ electrons is essential to bring about the anisotropy of the scattering factor near the K edge. The calculated results in $MnO_6$ clusters explain the forbidden reflections observed in $La_{0.5}Sr_{1.5}MnO_4$ and $LaMnO_3$. A possibility of the observation of the orbital waves by the X-ray scattering is discussed.

Pressure Effects in Manganites with Layered Perovskite Structure

Pressure effects on the charge and spin dynamics in the bilayer manganite compounds $La_{2-2x}Sr_{1+2x}Mn_2O_7$ are studied theoretically by taking into account the orbital degrees of freedom. The orbital degrees are active in the layered crystal structure, and applied hydrostatic pressure stabilizes the $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital in comparison with $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$. The change of the orbital states weakens the interlayer charge and spin couplings, and suppresses the three dimensional ferromagnetic transition. Numerical results, based on an effective Hamiltonian which includes the energy level difference of the orbitals, show that the applied pressure controls the dimensionality of the spin and charge dynamics through changes of the orbital states.

Electronic States of doped spin ladders (Sr,Ca)14Cu24O41

We examine the electronic states of Sr$_{14-x}$Ca$_x$Cu$_{24}$O$_{41}$ by the ionic and cluster model approach. It is found that self-doped holes are likely to stay on the chain at $x=0$ and the Ca substitution drives the holes to move to the ladder. This feature is caused by the change of the positions of (Sr,Ca) layers, which enhances the electrostatic potentials in the chain. The optical conductivity is calculated applying the exact diagonalization method to small Cu-O clusters. It is shown that the excitations below 2 eV are governed by the ladder, giving rise to the spectral weight transfer from the charge-transfer excitation around 2 eV to low energy Drude excitation, while the contribution from the chain mainly emerges in higher energy region showing large weight around 3 eV. These provide consistent explanation to recent experiment.
