Variational calculation of positronium-helium-atom scattering length

We present a variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by helium atom in S wave and apply it to the calculation of the scattering length. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are used in this calculation. We report numerical result for the scattering length in atomic unit: $(1.0\pm 0.1)a_0$. This corresponds to a zero-energy elastic cross section of $(4.0\pm 0.8)πa_0^2$.

S-, P- and D-wave resonances in positronium-sodium and positronium-potassium scattering

Scattering of positronium (Ps) by sodium and potassium atoms has been investigated employing a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model with Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential fitted to reproduce accurate theoretical results for PsNa and PsK binding energies. We find a narrow S-wave singlet resonance at 4.58 eV of width 0.002 eV in the Ps-Na system and at 4.77 eV of width 0.003 eV in the Ps-K system. Singlet P-wave resonances in both systems are found at 5.07 eV of width 0.3 eV. Singlet D-wave structures are found at 5.3 eV in both systems. We also report results for elastic and Ps-excitation cross sections for Ps scattering by Na and K.

Numerical study of the coupled time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation: Application to Bose-Einstein condensation

We present a numerical study of the coupled time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation, which describes the Bose-Einstein condensate of several types of trapped bosons at ultralow temperature with both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. The same approach is used to study both stationary and time-evolution problems. We consider up to four types of atoms in the study of stationary problems. We consider the time-evolution problems where the frequencies of the traps or the atomic scattering lengths are suddenly changed in a stable preformed condensate. We also study the effect of periodically varying these frequencies or scattering lengths on a preformed condensate. These changes introduce oscillations in the condensate which are studied in detail. Good convergence is obtained in all cases studied.

Convergent variational calculation of positronium-hydrogen-atom scattering lengths

We present a convergent variational basis-set calculational scheme for elastic scattering of positronium atom by hydrogen atom in S wave. Highly correlated trial functions with appropriate symmetry are needed for achieving convergence. We report convergent results for scattering lengths in atomic units for both singlet ($=3.49\pm 0.20$) and triplet ($=2.46\pm 0.10$) states.

Mixing of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and $d_{xy}$ superconducting states for different filling and temperature

We investigate the solution of the gap equation for mixed order parameter symmetry states as a function of filling using a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. The principal (major) component of the order parameter is taken to be of the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ type. As suggested in several investigations the minor component of the order parameter is taken to be of the $d_{xy}$ type. Both the permissible mixing angles 0 and $π/2$ between the two components are considered. As a function of filling pronounced maxima of $d_{x^2-y^2}$ order parameter is accompanied by minima of the $d_{xy}$ order parameter. At fixed filling, the temperature dependence of the two components of the order parameter is also studied in all cases. The variation of critical temperature $T_c$ with filling is also studied and $T_c$ is found to increase with second-neighbor hopping.

Integral equations of scattering in one dimension

A self-contained discussion of integral equations of scattering is presented in the case of centrally-symmetric potentials in one dimension, which will facilitate the understanding of more complex scattering integral equations in two and three dimensions. The present discussion illustrates in a simple fashion the concept of partial-wave decomposition, Green's function, Lippmann-Schwinger integral equations of scattering for wave function and transition operator, optical theorem and unitarity relation. We illustrate the present approach with a Dirac delta potential.

Coupled Bose-Einstein condensate: Collapse for attractive interaction

We study the collapse in a coupled Bose-Einstein condensate of two types of bosons 1 and 2 under the action of a trap using the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The system may undergo collapse when one, two or three of the scattering lengths $a_{ij}$ for scattering of boson $i$ with $j$, $i,j = 1, 2 $, are negative representing an attractive interaction. Depending on the parameters of the problem a single or both components of the condensate may experience collapse.

Mixing of superconducting $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state with s-wave states for different filling and temperature

We study the order parameter for mixed-symmetry states involving a major $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state and various minor s-wave states ($s$, $s_{xy}$, and $s_{x^2+y^2}$) for different filling and temperature for mixing angles 0 and $π/2$. We employ a two-dimensional tight-binding model incorporating second-neighbor hopping for tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. There is mixing for the symmetric $s$ state both on tetragonal and orthorhombic lattice. The $s_{xy}$ state mixes with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state only on orthorhombic lattice. The $s_{x^2+y^2}$ state never mixes with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state. The temperature dependence of the order parameters is also studied.

Quantum scattering in one dimension

A self-contained discussion of nonrelativistic quantum scattering is presented in the case of central potentials in one space dimension, which will facilitate the understanding of the more complex scattering theory in two and three dimensions. The present discussion illustrates in a simple way the concept of partial-wave decomposition, phase shift, optical theorem and effective-range expansion.

Positronium atom scattering by H_2 in a coupled-channel framework

The scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by H$_2$ has been investigated using a three-Ps-state [Ps(1s,2s,2p)H$_2($X $^1Σ_g^+$)] coupled-channel model and using Born approximation for higher excitations and ionization of Ps and B $^1Σ_u^+$ and b $^3Σ_u^+$ excitations of H$_2$. We employ a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric nonlocal electron-exchange model potential. We present a calculational scheme for solving the body-frame fixed-nuclei coupled-channel scattering equations for Ps-H$_2$, which simplifies the numerical solution technique considerably. Ps ionization is found to have the leading contribution to target-elastic and all target-inelastic processes. The total cross sections at low and medium energies are in good agreement with experiment.

Dynamical calculation of direct muon-transfer rates from thermalized muonic hydrogen to C^{6+} and O^{8+}

We perform dynamical calculations of direct muon-transfer rates from thermalized muonic hydrogen isotopes to bare nuclei C$^{6+}$ and O$^{8+}$. For these three-body charge-transfer reactions with Coulomb interaction in the final state we use two-component integro-differential Faddeev-Hahn-type equations in configuration space using close-coupling approximation. To take into account the high polarizability of the muonic hydrogen due to the large charge of the incident nuclei, a polarization potential is included in the elastic channel. The large final-state Coulomb interaction is explicitly included in the transfer channel. The transfer rates so calculated are in good agreement with recent experiments.

Differential and partial cross sections of elastic and inelastic positronium-helium-atom scattering

Scattering of positronium (Ps) by helium atom has been investigated in a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model including Ps(1s,2s,2p) states using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. Specifically, we report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering and target-elastic Ps excitations. We also present results for total and different partial cross sections and compare them with experiment and other calculations.

Differential cross sections for elastic and inelastic positronium-hydrogen-atom scattering

We report results of differential cross sections for elastic scattering, target-elastic Ps excitations and target-inelastic excitation of hydrogen in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric regularized electron-exchange model potential. The present model yields a singlet Ps-H S-wave resonance at 4.01 eV of width 0.15 eV and a P-wave resonance at 5.08 eV of width 0.004 eV. We also study the effect of the inclusion of the excited Ps and H states on the convergence of the coupled-channel scheme.

Bose-Einstein condensation thermodynamics of a trapped gas with attractive interaction

We study the Bose-Einstein condensation of an interacting gas with attractive interaction confined in a harmonic trap using a semiclassical two-fluid mean-field model. The condensed state is described by converged numerical solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. By solving the system of coupled equations of this model iteratively we obtain converged results for the temperature dependencies of the condensate fraction, chemical potential, and internal energy for the Bose-Einstein condensate of $^7$Li atoms.

Limits of validity for a semiclassical mean-field two-fluid model for Bose-Einstein condensation thermodynamics

We reinvestigate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) thermodynamics of a weakly interacting dilute Bose gas under the action of a trap using a semiclassical two-fluid mean-field model in order to find the domain of applicability of the model. Such a model is expected to break down once the condition of diluteness and weak interaction is violated. We find that this breakdown happens for values of coupling and density near the present experimental scenario of BEC. With the increase of the interaction coupling and density the model may lead to unphysical results for thermodynamic observables.

Numerical study of the spherically-symmetric Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two space dimensions

We present a numerical study of the time-dependent and time-independent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation in two space dimensions, which describes the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped bosons at ultralow temperature with both attractive and repulsive interatomic interactions. Both time-dependent and time-independent GP equations are used to study the stationary problems. In addition the time-dependent approach is used to study some evolution problems of the condensate. Specifically, we study the evolution problem where the trap energy is suddenly changed in a stable preformed condensate. In this case the system oscillates with increasing amplitude and does not remain limited between two stable configurations. Good convergence is obtained in all cases studied.

Numerical Solution of the Two-Dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii Equation for Trapped Interacting Atoms

We present a numerical scheme for solving the time-independent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation in two dimensions describing the Bose-Einstein condensate of trapped interacting neutral atoms at zero temperature. The trap potential is taken to be of the harmonic-oscillator type and the interaction both attractive and repulsive. The Gross-Pitaevskii equation is numerically integrated consistent with the correct boundary conditions at the origin and in the asymptotic region. Rapid convergence is obtained in all cases studied. In the attractive case there is a limit to the maximum number of atoms in the condensate.

Scattering of positronium by H, He, Ne, and Ar

The low-energy scattering of ortho positronium (Ps) by H, He, Ne, and Ar atoms has been investigated in the coupled-channel framework by using a recently proposed time-reversal-symmetric nonlocal electron-exchange model potential with a single parameter $C$. For H and He we use a three-Ps-state coupled-channel model and for Ar and Ne we use a static-exchange model. The sensitivity of the results is studied with respect to the parameter $C$. Present low-energy cross sections for He, Ne and Ar are in good agreement with experiment.
