Positronium-hydrogen-atom scattering in a five-state model

The scattering of ortho-positronium (Ps) by hydrogen atoms has been investigated in a five-state coupled-channel model allowing for Ps(1s)H(2s,2p) and Ps(2s,2p)H(1s) excitations using a recently proposed electron-exchange model potential. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of the Ps atom are calculated using the first Born approximation. Calculations are reported of scattering lengths, phase shifts, elastic, Ps- and H-excitation, and total cross sections. Remarkable correlations are observed between the S-wave Ps-H binding energy and the singlet scattering length, effective range, and resonance energy obtained in various model calculations. These correlations suggest that if a Ps-H dynamical model yields the correct result for one of these four observables, it is expected to lead to the correct result for the other three. The present model, which is constructed so as to reproduce the Ps-H resonance at 4.01 eV, automatically yields a Ps-H bound state at -1.05 eV which compares well with the accurate value of -1.067 eV. The model leads to a singlet scattering length of 3.72$a_0$ and effective range of 1.67$a_0$, whereas the correlations suggest the precise values of $3.50a_0$ and 1.65$a_0$ for these observables, respectively.

Electron exchange model potential: Application to positronium-helium scattering

The formulation of a suitable nonlocal model potential for electron exchange is presented, checked with electron-hydrogen and electron-helium scattering, and applied to the study of elastic and inelastic scattering and ionization of ortho positronium (Ps) by helium. The elastic scattering and the $n = 2$ excitations of Ps are investigated using a three-Ps-state close-coupling approximation. The higher ($n\ge 3$) excitations and ionization of Ps atom are treated in the framework of Born approximation with present exchange. Calculations are reported of phase shifts, and elastic, Ps-excitation, and total cross sections. The present target elastic total cross section agrees well with experimental results at thermal to medium energies.

Low-energy quenching of positronium by helium

Very low-energy scattering of orthopositronium by helium has been investigated for simultaneous study of elastic cross section and pick-off quenching rate using a model exchange potential. The present calculational scheme, while agrees with the measured cross section of Skalsey et al, reproduces successfully the parameter $^ 1Z_{\makebox{eff}}$, the effective number of electrons per atom in a singlet state relative to the positron. Together with the fact that this model potential also leads to an agreement with measured medium energy cross sections of this system, this study seems to resolve the long-standing discrepancy at low energies among different theoretical calculations and experimental measurements.

Low-energy three-body charge transfer reactions with Coulomb interaction in the final state

Three-body charge transfer reactions with Coulomb interaction in the final state are considered in the framework of coordinate-space integro-differential Faddeev-Hahn-type equations within two- and six-state close coupling approximations. The method is employed to study direct muon transfer in low-energy collisions of the muonic hydrogen H$_μ$ by helium (He$^{++}$) and lithium (Li$^{+++}$) nuclei. The experimentally observed isotopic dependence is reproduced.

Coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type approach to three-body charge transfer reactions involving exotic particles

Low-energy muon-transfer cross sections and rates in collisions of muonic atoms with hydrogen isotopes are calculated using a six-state close-coupling approximation to coordinate-space Faddeev-Hahn-type equations. In the muonic case satisfactory results are obtained for all hydrogen isotopes and the experimentaly observed strong isotopic dependence of transfer rates is also reproduced. A comparison with results of other theoretical and available experimental works is presented. The present model also leads to good transfer cross sections in the well-understood problem of antihydrogen formation in antiproton-positronium collision.

Two phase transitions in ${(d_{x^2-y^2}+is)}$-wave superconductors

We study numerically the temperature dependencies of specific heat, susceptibility, penetration depth, and thermal conductivity of a coupled $(d_{x^2-y^2}+is)$-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schreiffer superconductor in the presence of a weak s-wave component (1) on square lattice and (2) on a lattice with orthorhombic distorsion. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature $T_c$, a less ordered superconducting phase is created in $d_{x^2-y^2}$ wave, which changes to a more ordered phase in $(d_{x^2-y^2}+is)$ wave at $T_{c1}$. This manifests in two second-order phase transitions. The two phase transitions are identified by two jumps in specific heat at $T_c$ and $T_{c1}$. The temperature dependencies of the superconducting observables exhibit a change from power-law to exponential behavior as temperature is lowered below $T_{c1}$ and confirm the new phase transition.

Phase transition from a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ to $d_{x^2-y^2}+d_{xy}$ superconductor

We study the phase transition from a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ to $d_{x^2-y^2}+d_{xy}$ superconductor using the tight-binding model of two-dimensional cuprates. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature $T_c$, first a $ d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconducting phase is created. With further reduction of temperature, the $ d_{x^2-y^2}+d_{xy}$ phase is created at temperature $T=T_{c1}$. We study the temperature dependencies of the order parameter, specific heat and spin susceptibility in these mixed-angular-momentum states on square lattice and on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. The above-mentioned phase transitions are identified by two jumps in specific heat at $T_c$ and $T_{c1}$.

Phase transition from a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ to $d_{x^2-y^2}+id_{xy}$ superconductor

The temperature dependencies of specific heat and spin susceptibility of a coupled $d_{x^2-y^2} +id_{xy}$ superconductor in the presence of a weak $d_{xy}$ component are investigated in the tight-binding model (1) on square lattice and (2) on a lattice with orthorhombic distortion. As the temperature is lowered past the critical temperature $T_c$, first a less ordered $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor is created, which changes to a more ordered $d_{x^2-y^2} +id_{xy}$ superconductor at $T_{c1} (<T_c)$. This manifests in two second order phase transitions identified by two jumps in specific heat at $T_c$ and $T_{c1}$. The temperature dependencies of the superconducting observables exhibit a change from power-law to exponential behavior as temperature is lowered below $T_{c1}$ and confirm the new phase transition.

Dimensional versus cut-off renormalization and the nucleon-nucleon potential of the effective field theory

The role of cut-off and dimensional regularizations is discussed in the context of obtaining a renormalized nucleon-nucleon potential from the chiral Lagrangian formulation of the effective field theory due to Weinberg. Both types of renormalizations are performed for the sum of an attractive delta function and its derivatives. The equivalence between the two forms of regularizations can be established with the use of energy-dependent bare couplings and the explicit forms of these couplings are determined.

Dimensional versus cut-off renormalization and the nucleon-nucleon interaction

The role of dimensional regularization is discussed and compared with that of cut-off regularization in some quantum mechanical problems with ultraviolet divergence in two and three dimensions with special emphasis on the nucleon-nucleon interaction. Both types of renormalizations are performed for attractive divergent one- and two-term separable potentials, a divergent tensor potential, and the sum of a delta function and its derivatives. We allow energy-dependent couplings, and determine the form that these couplings should take if equivalence between the two regularization schemes is to be enforced. We also perform renormalization of an attractive separable potential superposed on an analytic divergent potential.

Absence of Cooper-type bound states in three- and few-electron systems

It is shown that the appearance of a fixed-point singularity in the kernel of the two-electron Cooper problem is responsible for the formation of the Cooper pair for an arbitrarily weak attractive interaction between two electrons. This singularity is absent in the problem of three and few superconducting electrons at zero temperature on the full Fermi sea. Consequently, such three- and few-electron systems on the full Fermi sea do not form Cooper-type bound states for an arbitrarily weak attractive pair interaction.

Two phase transitions in (s+id)-wave Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductivity

We establish universal behavior in temperature dependencies of some observables in $(s+id)$-wave BCS superconductivity in the presence of a weak $s$ wave. There also could appear a second second-order phase transition. As temperature is lowered past the usual critical temperature $T_c$, a less ordered superconducting phase is created in $d$ wave, which changes to a more ordered phase in $(s+id)$ wave at $T_{c1}$ ($< T_c$). The presence of two phase transitions manifest in two jumps in specific heat at $T_c$ and $T_{c1}$. The temperature dependencies of susceptibility, penetration depth, and thermal conductivity also confirm the new phase transition.

Universal scaling in BCS superconductivity in two dimensions in non-s waves

The solutions of a renormalized BCS model are studied in two space dimensions in $s$, $p$ and $d$ waves for finite-range separable potentials. The gap parameter, the critical temperature $T_c$, the coherence length $ξ$ and the jump in specific heat at $T_c$ as a function of zero-temperature condensation energy exhibit universal scalings. In the weak-coupling limit, the present model yields a small $ξ$ and large $T_c$ appropriate to those for high-$T_c$ cuprates. The specific heat, penetration depth and thermal conductivity as a function of temperature show universal scaling in $p$ and $d$ waves.

Universal scaling in BCS superconductivity in three dimensions in non-$s$ waves

The solutions of a renormalized BCS equation are studied in three space dimensions in $s$, $p$ and $d$ waves for finite-range separable potentials in the weak to medium coupling region. In the weak-coupling limit, the present BCS model yields a small coherence length $ξ$ and a large critical temperature, $T_c$, appropriate for some high-$T_c$ materials. The BCS gap, $T_c$, $ξ$ and specific heat $C_s(T_c)$ as a function of zero-temperature condensation energy are found to exhibit potential-independent universal scalings. The entropy, specific heat, spin susceptibility and penetration depth as a function of temperature exhibit universal scaling below $T_c$ in $p$ and $d$ waves.

Lattice Discretization in Quantum Scattering

The utility of lattice discretization technique is demonstrated for solving nonrelativistic quantum scattering problems and specially for the treatment of ultraviolet divergences in these problems with some potentials singular at the origin in two and three space dimensions. This shows that lattice discretization technique could be a useful tool for the numerical solution of scattering problems in general. The approach is illustrated in the case of the Dirac delta function potential.

Renormalization in Nonrelativistic Quantum Mechanics

The importance and usefulness of renormalization are emphasized in nonrelativistic quantum mechanics. The momentum space treatment of both two-body bound state and scattering problems involving some potentials singular at the origin exhibits ultraviolet divergence. The use of renormalization techniques in these problems leads to finite converged results for both the exact and perturbative solutions. The renormalization procedure is carried out for the quantum two-body problem in different partial waves for a minimal potential possessing only the threshold behavior and no form factors. The renormalized perturbative and exact solutions for this problem are found to be consistent with each other. The useful role of the renormalization group equations for this problem is also pointed out.

Relativistic Effect on Low-Energy Nucleon-Deuteron Scattering

The relativistic effect on differential cross sections, nucleon-to-nucleon and nucleon-to-deuteron polarization transfer coefficients, and the spin correlation function, of nucleon-deuteron elastic scattering is investigated employing several three-dimensional relativistic three-body equations and several nucleon-nucleon potentials. The polarization transfer coefficients are found to be sensitive to the details of the nucleon-nucleon potentials and the relativistic dynamics employed, and prefer trinucleon models with the correct triton binding energy. Model for asymptotic $D$-state parameters of light nuclei: Application to $^4He$

A simple method for calculating the asymptotic $D$ state observables for light nuclei is suggested. The method exploits the dominant clusters of the light nuclei. The method is applied to calculate the $^4He$ asymptotic $D$ to $S$ normalization ratio $ρ^α$ and the closely related $D$ state parameter $D_2^α$. The study predicts a correlation between $D_2^α$ and $B_α$, and between $ρ^α$ and $B_α$, where $B_α$ is the binding energy of $^4He$. The present study yields $ρ^α\simeq -0.14$ and $D_2^α\simeq -0.12$ fm$^2$ consistent with the correct experimental $η^D$ and the binding energies of the deuteron, triton, and the $α$ particle, where $η^d$ is the deuteron $D$ state to $S$ state normalization ratio.
