Ideals, Cohen sets and consistent extensions of the Erdős-Dushnik-Miller Theorem

We present two different types of models where, for certain singular cardinals lambda of uncountable cofinality, lambda -> (lambda, omega+1)^2, although lambda is not a strong limit cardinal. We announce, here, and will present in a subsequent paper, that, for example, consistently, aleph_{omega_1} not-> (aleph_{omega_1}, omega+1)^2 and consistently, 2^{aleph_0} not-> (2^{aleph_0},omega +1)^2 .

The Kaplansky test problems for aleph_1-separable groups

We answer a long-standing open question by proving in ordinary set theory, ZFC, that the Kaplansky test problems have negative answers for aleph_1-separable abelian groups of cardinality aleph_1. In fact, there is an aleph_1-separable abelian group M such that M is isomorphic to M oplus M oplus M but not to M oplus M .

A note on some versions of club

This note gives two results on guessing unbounded subsets of lambda^+. The first is a positive result and applies to the situation of lambda regular, while the second is a negative consistency result which applies to the situation of lambda singular. Both results are connected to an earlier result of the same authors in which they showed that a certain version of clubsuit holds at a successor of singular just in ZFC. The first result here shows that that fact can to a certain extent be extended to the successor of singular. The negative result here gives limitations to the extent to which one can hope to extend the afore mentioned fact. This note is presently only available as an electronic publication. It can be obtained as a ps file either from the e-prints archive, or from the authors' home pages.

A tree--arrowing graph

We answer a variant of a question of Rodl and Voigt by showing that, for a given infinite cardinal lambda, there is a graph G of cardinality kappa =(2^lambda)^+ such that for any colouring of the edges of G with lambda colours, there is an induced copy of the kappa-tree in G in the set theoretic sense with all edges having the same colour.

A cardinal invariant related to homogeneous families

Let "ex" be the cardinality of the smallest independent family of subsets of omega (independent means that all nontrivial Boolean combinations are infinite) which cannot be extended to a homogeneous independent family. "Homogeneous" means that every finite partial map (points to points, sets to sets) that is compatible with the family is induced by a permutation of omega. Despite its apparently ``complex'' (second order) definition, this cardinal is equal to a well-known ``simple'' cardinal invariant from Cichon's diagram.

A Partial Order Where All Monotone Maps Are Definable

It is consistent that there is a partial order (P,<) of size aleph_1 such that every monotone (unary) function from P to P is first order definable in (P,<). The partial order is constructed in an extension obtained by finite support iteration of Cohen forcing. The main points is that (1) all monotone functions from P to P will (essentially) have countable range (this uses a Delta-system argument) and (2) that all countable subsets of P will be first order definable, so we have to code these countable sets into the partial order. Amalgamation of finite structures plays an essential role.

Order polynomially complete lattices must be LARGE

If L is an order polynomially complete lattice, (that is: every monotone function from L^n to L is induced by a lattice-theoretic polynomial) then the cardinality of L is a strongly inaccessible cardinal. In particular, the existence of such lattices is not provable in ZFC, nor from ZFC+GCH. Although the problem originates in algebra, the proof is purely set-theoretical. The main tools are partition and canonisation theorems. It is still open if the existence of infinite o.p.c. lattices can be refuted in ZFC.

Not collapsing cardinals <= kappa in (< kappa) --support iterations

We deal with the problem of preserving various versions of completeness in (< kappa) --support iterations of forcing notions, generalizing the case ``S --complete proper is preserved by CS iterations for a stationary co-stationary S subseteq omega_1''. We give applications to Uniformization and the Whitehead problem. In particular, for a strongly inaccessible cardinal kappa and a stationary set S subseteq kappa with fat complement we can have uniformization for < A_delta : delta in S'>, A_delta subseteq delta = sup A_delta, cf(delta)=otp(A_delta) and a stationary non-reflecting set S' subseteq S .

Erdős and Renyi conjecture

Affirming a conjecture of Erdős and Renyi we prove that for any (real number) c_1>0 for some c_2>0, if a graph G has no c_1(log n) nodes on which the graph is complete or edgeless (i.e. G exemplifies |G| not-> (c_1 log n)^2_2) then G has at least 2^{c_2n} non-isomorphic (induced) subgraphs.

Toward categoricity for classes with no maximal models

We provide here the first steps toward Classification Theory of Abstract Elementary Classes with no maximal models, plus some mild set theoretical assumptions, when the class is categorical in some lambda greater than its Lowenheim-Skolem number. We study the degree to which amalgamation may be recovered, the behaviour of non mu-splitting types. Most importantly, the existence of saturated models in a strong enough sense is proved, as a first step toward a complete solution to the Los Conjecture for these classes.

Stationary sets and infinitary logic

Let K^0_lambda be the class of structures < lambda,<,A>, where A subseteq lambda is disjoint from a club, and let K^1_lambda be the class of structures < lambda,<,A>, where A subseteq lambda contains a club. We prove that if lambda = lambda^{< kappa} is regular, then no sentence of L_{lambda^+ kappa} separates K^0_lambda and K^1_lambda. On the other hand, we prove that if lambda = mu^+, mu = mu^{< mu}, and a forcing axiom holds (and aleph_1^L= aleph_1 if mu = aleph_0), then there is a sentence of L_{lambda lambda} which separates K^0_lambda and K^1_lambda .

Choiceless polynomial time

Turing machines define polynomial time (PTime) on strings but cannot deal with structures like graphs directly, and there is no known, easily computable string encoding of isomorphism classes of structures. Is there a computation model whose machines do not distinguish between isomorphic structures and compute exactly PTime properties? This question can be recast as follows: Does there exist a logic that captures polynomial time (without presuming the presence of a linear order)? Earlier, one of us conjectured the negative answer. The problem motivated a quest for stronger and stronger PTime logics. All these logics avoid arbitrary choice. Here we attempt to capture the choiceless fragment of PTime. Our computation model is a version of abstract state machines (formerly called evolving algebras). The idea is to replace arbitrary choice with parallel execution. The resulting logic is more expressive than other PTime logics in the literature. A more difficult theorem shows that the logic does not capture all PTime.

On a problem of Steve Kalikov

The Kalikow problem for a pair (lambda, kappa) of cardinal numbers, lambda > kappa (in particular kappa =2) is whether we can map the family of omega --sequences from lambda to the family of omega --sequences from kappa in a very continuous manner. Namely, we demand that for eta, nu in lambda^omega we have: eta, nu are almost equal if and only if their images are. We show consistency of the negative answer e.g. for aleph_omega but we prove it for smaller cardinals. We indicate a close connection with the free subset property and its variants.
