Detection and size measurement of individual hemozoin nanocrystals in aquatic environment using a whispering gallery mode resonator

We, for the first time, report the detection and the size measurement of single nanoparticles (i.e. polystyrene) in aquatic environment using mode splitting in a whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonator, namely a microtoroid resonator. Using this method we achieved detecting and measuring individual synthetic hemozoin nanocrystals, which are a hemoglobin degradation by-product of malarial parasites, dispersed in a solution or in air. The results of size measurement in solution and in air agree with each other and with those obtained using scanning electron microscope and dynamic light scattering. Moreover, we compare the sensing capabilities of the degenerate (single resonance) and non-degenerate (split mode, doublet) operation regimes of the WGM resonator.

Photonic molecules formed by coupled hybrid resonators

We describe a method that enables free-standing whispering-gallery-mode microresonators, and report spectral tuning of photonic molecules formed by coupled free and on-chip resonators with different geometries and materials. We study direct coupling via evanescent fields of free silica microtoroids and microspheres with on-chip polymer coated silica microtoroids. We demonstrate thermal tuning of resonance modes to achieve maximal spectral overlap, mode splitting induced by direct coupling, and the effects of distance between the resonators on the splitting spectra.

Encapsulation of a fiber taper coupled microtoroid resonator in a polymer matrix

We encapsulated a high-quality (Q) factor optical whispering gallery mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator together with its side coupled fiber taper inside a low refractive index polymer, achieving a final Q higher than 10^7. Packaging provides stable resonator-fiber taper coupling, long-term maintenance of high-Q, a protective layer against contaminants, and portability to microtoroid resonator based devices. We tested the robustness of the packaged device under various conditions and demonstrated its capability for thermal sensing.

Detecting single viruses and nanoparticles using whispering gallery microlasers

Detection and characterization of individual nano-scale particles, virions, and pathogens are of paramount importance to human health, homeland security, diagnostic and environmental monitoring[1]. There is a strong demand for high-resolution, portable, and cost-effective systems to make label-free detection and measurement of individual nanoparticles, molecules, and viruses [2-6]. Here, we report an easily accessible, real-time and label-free detection method with single nanoparticle resolution that surpasses detection limit of existing micro- and nano-photonic devices. This is achieved by using an ultra-narrow linewidth whispering gallery microlaser, whose lasing line undergoes frequency splitting upon the binding of individual nano-objects. We demonstrate detection of polystyrene and gold nanoparticles as small as 15 nm and 10 nm in radius, respectively, and Influenza A virions by monitoring changes in self-heterodyning beat note of the split lasing modes. Experiments are performed in both air and aqueous environment. The built-in self-heterodyne interferometric method achieved in a microlaser provides a self-reference scheme with extraordinary sensitivity [7,8], and paves the way for detection and spectroscopy of nano-scale objects using micro- and nano-lasers.

An optical fusion gate for W-states

We introduce a simple optical gate to fuse arbitrary size polarization entangled W-states to prepare larger W-states. The gate requires a polarizing beam splitter (PBS), a half wave plate (HWP) and two photon detectors. We study numerically and analytically the necessary resource consumption for preparing larger W-states by fusing smaller ones with the proposed fusion gate. We show analytically that resource requirement scales at most sub-exponentially with the increasing size of the state to be prepared. We numerically determine the resource cost for fusion without recycling where W-states of arbitrary size can be optimally prepared. Moreover, we introduce another strategy which is based on recycling and outperforms the optimal strategy for non-recycling case.

Observation and characterization of mode splitting in microsphere resonators in aquatic environment

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) optical resonators utilizing resonance shift (RS) and mode splitting (MS) techniques have emerged as highly sensitive platforms for label-free detection of nano-scale objects. RS method has been demonstrated in various resonators in air and liquid. MS in microsphere resonators has not been achieved in aqueous environment up to date, despite its demonstration in microtoroid resonators. Here, we demonstrate scatterer-induced MS of WGMs in microsphere resonators in water. We determine the size range of particles that induces MS in a microsphere in water as a function of resonator mode volume and quality factor. The results are confirmed by the experimental observations.

Estimation of Purcell factor from mode-splitting spectra in an optical microcavity

We investigate scattering process in an ultra-high-Q optical microcavity coupled to subwavelength scatterers by introducing "splitting quality" Qsp, a dimensionless parameter defined as the ratio of the scatterer-induced mode splitting to the total loss of the coupled system. A simple relation is introduced to directly estimate the Purcell factor from single-shot measurement of transmission spectrum of scatterer-coupled cavity. Experiments with polystyrene (PS) and gold (Au) nanoparticles, Erbium ions and Influenza A virions show that Purcell-factor-enhanced preferential funneling of scattering into the cavity mode takes place regardless of the scatterer type. Experimentally determined highest Qsp for single PS and Au nanoparticles are 9.4 and 16.19 corresponding to Purcell factors with lower bounds of 353 and 1049, respectively. The highest observed Qsp was 31.2 for an ensemble of Au particles. These values are the highest Qsp and Purcell factors reported up to date.

Demonstration of local expansion toward large-scale entangled webs

We demonstrate an optical gate that increases the size of polarization-based W states by accessing only one of the qubits. Using this gate, we have generated three-photon and four-photon W states with fidelities $0.836\pm 0.042 $ and $0.784\pm 0.028$, respectively. We also confirmed existence of pairwise entanglement in every pair of the qubits including the one that was left untouched by the gate. The gate is applicable to any size of W states and hence is a universal tool for expanding entanglement.

Demonstration of mode splitting in an optical microcavity in aqueous environment

Scatterer induced modal coupling and the consequent mode splitting in a whispering gallery mode resonator is demonstrated in aqueous environment. The rate of change in splitting as particles enter the resonator mode volume strongly depends on the concentration of particle solution: The higher is the concentration, the higher is the rate of change. Polystyrene nanoparticles of radius 50nm with concentration as low as 5x10^(-6)wt% have been detected using the mode splitting spectra. Observation of mode splitting in water paves the way for constructing advanced resonator based sensors for measuring nanoparticles and biomolecules in various environments.

Controlled Manipulation of Mode Splitting in an Optical Microcavity by Two Rayleigh Scatterers

We report controlled manipulation of mode splitting in an optical microresonator coupled to two nanoprobes. It is demonstrated that, by controlling the positions of the nanoprobes, the split modes can be tuned simultaneously or individually and experience crossing or anti-crossing in frequency and linewidth. A tunable transition between standing wave mode and travelling wave mode is also observed. Underlying physics is discussed by developing a two-scatterer model which can be extended to multiple scatterers. Observed rich dynamics and tunability of split modes in a single microresonator will find immediate applications in optical sensing, opto-mechanics, filters and will provide a platform to study strong light-matter interactions in two-mode cavities.

Ultra-sensitive detection of mode splitting in active optical microcavities

Scattering induced mode splitting in active microcavities is demonstrated. Below the lasing threshold, quality factor enhancement by optical gain allows resolving, in the wavelength-scanning transmission spectrum, the resonance dips of the split modes which otherwise would not be detected in a passive resonator. In the lasing regime, mode splitting manifests itself as two lasing modes with extremely narrow linewidths. Mixing of these laser modes in a detector leads to a heterodyne beat signal whose frequency corresponds to the amount of splitting. Lasing regime not only allows ultrahigh sensitivity for mode-splitting measurements but also provides an easily accessible scheme by eliminating the need for wavelength scanning around resonant modes. Mode splitting in active microcavities has immediate impact in enhancing the sensitivity of sub-wavelength scatterer detection and in studying light-matter interactions in strong coupling regime.

Scatterer induced mode splitting in poly(dimethylsiloxane) coated microresonators

We investigate scatterer induced mode splitting in a composite microtoroidal resonator (Q ~ 10^6) fabricated by coating a silica microtoroid (Q ~ 10^7) with a thin poly(dimethylsiloxane) layer. We show that the two split modes in both coated and uncoated silica microtoroids respond in the same way to the changes in the environmental temperature. This provides a self-referencing scheme which is robust to temperature perturbations. Together with the versatile functionalities of polymer materials, mode splitting in polymer and polymer coated microresonators offers an attractive sensing platform that is robust to thermal noise.

On-chip Single Nanoparticle Detection and Sizing by Mode Splitting in an Ultra-high-Q Microresonator

The ability to detect and size individual nanoparticles with high resolution is crucial to understanding behaviours of single particles and effectively using their strong size-dependent properties to develop innovative products. We report real-time, in-situ detection and sizing of single nanoparticles, down to 30 nm in radius, using mode-splitting in a monolithic ultra-high-Q whispering-gallery-mode (WGM) microtoroid resonator. Particle binding splits a WGM into two spectrally shifted resonance modes, forming a self-referenced detection scheme. This technique provides superior noise suppression and enables extracting accurate size information in a single-shot measurement. Our method requires neither labelling of the particles nor apriori information on their presence in the medium, providing an effective platform to study nanoparticles at single particle resolution.

Local transformation of two EPR photon pairs into a three-photon W state

We propose and experimentally demonstrate a transformation of two EPR photon pairs distributed among three parties into a three-photon W state using local operations and classical communication. We then characterize the final state using quantum state tomography on the three-photon state and on its marginal bipartite states. The fidelity of the final state to the ideal W state is $0.778\pm 0.043$ and the expectation value for its witness operator is $-0.111\pm 0.043$ implying the success of the proposed local transformation.

Optimal entanglement generation for efficient hybrid quantum repeaters

We propose a realistic protocol to generate entanglement between quantum memories at neighboring nodes in hybrid quantum repeaters. Generated entanglement includes only one type of error, which enables efficient entanglement distillation. In contrast to the known protocols with such a property, our protocol with ideal detectors achieves the theoretical limit of the success probability and the fidelity to a Bell state, promising higher efficiencies in the repeaters. We also show that the advantage of our protocol remains even with realistic threshold detectors.

Local expansion of photonic W state using a polarization dependent beamsplitter

We propose a simple probabilistic optical gate to expand polarization entangled W states. The gate uses one polarization-dependent beamsplitter and a horizontally polarized single photon as an ancilla. The gate post-selectively expands $N$-photon W states to $(N+1)$-photon W states. A feasibility analysis considering the realistic experimental conditions show that the scheme is within the reach of the current quantum optical technologies.

Robust photonic entanglement distribution via state-independent encoding onto decoherence-free subspace

Efficient and faithful implementation of quantum information tasks, e.g., quantum computing, quantum communication and quantum metrology, requires robust and state-independent decoherence-suppressing measures to protect quantum information carriers. Here we present an experimental demonstration of a robust distribution scheme in which one photon of an entangled photon pair is successfully encoded into and decoded from a decoherence-free subspace (DFS) by a state-independent scheme. We achieved a high-fidelity distribution of the entangled state over fibre communication channel, and also demonstrated that the scheme is robust against fragility of the reference frame. The scheme, thanks to its state-independence, is also applicable to multipartite case where the photon to be distributed is entangled with many other photons. Such a universal scheme opens the possibility of robust distribution of quantum information among quantum communication and computing networks.
