F-theory Compactifications for Supersymmetric GUTs

We construct a family of elliptically fibered Calabi-Yau four-folds Y_4 for F-theory compactifications that realize SU(5) GUTs in the low-energy limit. The three-fold base X_3 of these fibrations is almost Fano and satisfies the topological criteria required to ensure that the U(1)_Y gauge boson remains massless, while allowing a decoupling of GUT and Planck scale physics. We study generic features of these models and the ability to engineer three chiral generations of MSSM matter. Finally, we demonstrate that it is relatively easy to implement the topological conditions required to reproduce certain successful features of local F-theory models, such as the emergence of flavor hierarchies.

An Instanton Toolbox for F-Theory Model Building

Several dimensionful parameters needed for model building can be engineered in a certain class of SU(5) F-theory GUTs by adding extra singlet fields which are localized along pairwise intersections of D7-branes. The values of these parameters, however, depend on dynamics external to the GUT which causes the singlets to acquire suitable masses or expectation values. In this note, we demonstrate that D3-instantons which wrap the same 4-cycle as one of the intersecting D7's can provide precisely the needed dynamics to generate several important scales, including the supersymmetry-breaking scale and the right-handed neutrino mass. Furthermore, these instantons seem unable to directly generate the μterm suggesting that, at least in this class of models, it should perhaps be tied to one of the other scales in the problem. More specifically, we study the simple system consisting of a pair of D7-branes wrapping del Pezzo surfaces which intersect along a curve $Σ$ of genus 0 or 1 and classify all instanton configurations which can potentially contribute to the superpotential. This allows one to formulate topological conditions which must be imposed on Σfor various model-building applications. Along the way, we also observe that the construction of arXiv:0808.1286 which engineers a linear superpotential in fact realizes an O'Raifeartaigh model at the KK scale whose 1-loop Coleman-Weinberg potential generically leads to a metastable, long-lived SUSY-breaking vacuum.

Instantons and SUSY breaking in F-theory

We study instanton contributions to the superpotential of local F-theory compactifications which could potentially be used to engineer models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking. These instantons correspond to Euclidean 3-branes which form a threshold bound state with spacetime filling 7-branes. In certain cases, their contributions to the effective 4d superpotential can be determined in both perturbative string theory as well as directly via the topologically twisted theory on the 3-brane worldvolume, and in all cases we observe an exact match between these results. We further present an instanton generated Polonyi-like model, and characterize subleading corrections to the superpotential which arise from multi-instantons. We also study instanton contributions to 4d pure N=1 SU(N) gauge theory realized by a stack of 7-branes wrapping a rigid 4-cycle and find that there is a non-trivial contribution to the glueball superpotential from the single instanton sector. This correction is absent in the purely 4d theory and could conceivably be used either to stabilize moduli or to break supersymmetry.

Monodromies, Fluxes, and Compact Three-Generation F-theory GUTs

We analyze constraints for embedding local SU(5) F-theory GUTs into consistent compactifications and construct explicit three-generation models based on the geometry of arXiv:0904.3932. The key tool for studying constraints in this problem when there is an underlying E_8 structure is the spectral cover, which encodes all of the symmetries that fix the allowed couplings in the superpotential, as well as the consistent, supersymmetric G-fluxes. Imposing phenomenological requirements such as the existence of three generations, top and bottom Yukawa couplings, good flavor structure and absence of exotics and of a tree-level mu-term, we derive stringent constraints on the allowed spectral covers. The resulting spectral covers are in conflict with the neutrino scenarios that have been studied in local F-theory models unless we allow for the possibility of additional charged fields, perhaps playing the role of gauge messengers, that do not comprise complete GUT multiplets. Quite remarkably, the existence of additional incomplete GUT multiplets below the GUT scale is necessary for consistency with gauge coupling "unification", as their effect on weak scale couplings can precisely cancel that of the internal hypercharge flux, which distorts the gauge couplings already at M_GUT.

Coset Construction for Duals of Non-relativistic CFTs

We systematically analyze backgrounds that are holographic duals to non-relativistic CFTs, by constructing them as cosets of the Schrodinger group and variants thereof. These cosets G/H are generically non-reductive and we discuss in generality how a metric on such spaces can be determined from a non-degenerate H-invariant symmetric two-form. Applying this to the d=2 Schrodinger algebra, we reproduce the five-dimensional backgrounds proposed as duals of fermions at unitarity, and under reasonable physical assumptions, we demonstrate uniqueness of this background. The proposed gravity dual of the Lifshitz fixed-point, for which Galileian symmetry is absent, also fits into this organizational scheme and uniqueness of this background can also be shown.

Gauge Mediation in F-Theory GUT Models

We study a simple framework for gauge-mediated supersymmetry-breaking in local GUT models based on F-theory 7-branes and demonstrate that a mechanism for solving both the μand μ/B_μ problems emerges in a natural way. In particular, a straightforward coupling of the messengers to the Higgs sector leads to a geometry which not only provides us with an approximate U(1)_{PQ} symmetry that forbids the generation of μat the GUT scale, it also forces the SUSY-breaking spurion field to carry a nontrivial PQ charge. This connects the breaking of SUSY to the generation of μso that the same scale enters both. Moreover, the messenger sector naturally realizes the D3-instanton triggered Polonyi model of arXiv:0808.1286 so this scale is exponentially suppressed relative to M_{GUT}. The effective action at low scales is in fact precisely of the form of the "sweet spot supersymmetry" scenario studied by Ibe and Kitano in arXiv:0705.3686.

Efficient precision quantization in AdS/CFT

Understanding finite-size effects is one of the key open questions in solving planar AdS/CFT. In this paper we discuss these effects in the AdS_5xS^5 string theory at one-loop in the world-sheet coupling. First we provide a very general, efficient way to compute the fluctuation frequencies, which allows to determine the energy shift for very general multi-cut solutions. Then we apply this to two-cut solutions, in particular the giant magnon and determine the finite-size corrections at subleading order. The latter are then compared to the finite-size corrections from Luscher-Klassen-Melzer formulas and found to be in perfect agreement.

Sine-Gordon-like action for the Superstring in AdS(5) x S(5)

We propose an action for a sine-Gordon-like theory, which reproduces the classical equations of motion of the Green-Schwarz-Metsaev-Tseytlin superstring on AdS(5) x S(5). The action is relativistically invariant. It is a mass-deformed gauged WZW model for SO(4,1) x SO(5) / SO(4) x SO(4) interacting with fermions.

Algebra of transfer-matrices and Yang-Baxter equations on the string worldsheet in AdS(5) x S(5)

Integrability of the string worldsheet theory in AdS(5) x S(5) is related to the existence of a flat connection depending on the spectral parameter. The transfer matrix is the open-ended Wilson line of this flat connection. We study the product of transfer matrices in the near-flat space expansion of the AdS(5) x S(5) string theory in the pure spinor formalism. The natural operations on Wilson lines with insertions are described in terms of r- and s-matrices satisfying a generalized classical Yang-Baxter equation. The formalism is especially transparent for infinite or closed Wilson lines with simple gauge invariant insertions.

Quantum Wrapped Giant Magnon

Understanding the finite-size corrections to the fundamental excitations of a theory is the first step towards completely solving for the spectrum in finite volume. We compute the leading exponential correction to the quantum energy of the fundamental excitation of the light-cone gauged string in AdS(5) x S(5), which is the giant magnon solution. We present two independent ways to obtain this correction: the first approach makes use of the algebraic curve description of the giant magnon. The second relies on the purely field-theoretical Luscher formulas, which depend on the world-sheet S-matrix. We demonstrate the agreement to all orders in g/Delta of these approaches, which in particular presents a further test of the S-matrix. We comment on generalizations of this method of computation to other string configurations.

Perturbative study of the transfer matrix on the string worldsheet in AdS(5)xS(5)

Quantum non-local charges are central to the quantum integrability of a sigma-model. In this paper we study the quantum consistency and UV finiteness of non-local charges of string theory in AdS(5)xS(5). We use the pure spinor formalism. We develop the near-flat space expansion of the transfer matrix and calculate the one-loop divergences. We find that the logarithmic divergences cancel at the level of one loop. This gives strong support to the quantum integrability of the full string theory. We develop a calculational setup for the renormalization group analysis of Wilson line type of operators on the string worldsheet.

Towards mirror symmetry à la SYZ for generalized Calabi-Yau manifolds

Fibrations of flux backgrounds by supersymmetric cycles are investigated. For an internal six-manifold M with static SU(2) structure and mirror \hat{M}, it is argued that the product M x \hat{M} is doubly fibered by supersymmetric three-tori, with both sets of fibers transverse to M and \hat{M}. The mirror map is then realized by T-dualizing the fibers. Mirror-symmetric properties of the fluxes, both geometric and non-geometric, are shown to agree with previous conjectures based on the requirement of mirror symmetry for Killing prepotentials. The fibers are conjectured to be destabilized by fluxes on generic SU(3)xSU(3) backgrounds, though they may survive at type-jumping points. T-dualizing the surviving fibers ensures the exchange of pure spinors under mirror symmetry.

T-duality with H-flux: non-commutativity, T-folds and G x G structure

Various approaches to T-duality with NSNS three-form flux are reconciled. Non-commutative torus fibrations are shown to be the open-string version of T-folds. The non-geometric T-dual of a three-torus with uniform flux is embedded into a generalized complex six-torus, and the non-geometry is probed by D0-branes regarded as generalized complex submanifolds. The non-commutativity scale, which is present in these compactifications, is given by a holomorphic Poisson bivector that also encodes the variation of the dimension of the world-volume of D-branes under monodromy. This bivector is shown to exist in SU(3) x SU(3) structure compactifications, which have been proposed as mirrors to NSNS-flux backgrounds. The two SU(3)-invariant spinors are generically not parallel, thereby giving rise to a non-trivial Poisson bivector. Furthermore we show that for non-geometric T-duals, the Poisson bivector may not be decomposable into the tensor product of vectors.

Exact expressions for quantum corrections to spinning strings

The one-loop worldsheet quantum corrections to the energy of spinning strings on R x S^3 within AdS_5 x S^5 are reexamined. The explicit expansion in the effective 't Hooft coupling λ'= λ/J^2 is rigorously derived. The expansion contains both analytic and non-analytic terms in λ', as well as exponential corrections. Furthermore, we pin down the origin of the terms that are not captured by the quantum string Bethe ansatz, which only produces analytic terms in λ'. It is shown that the analytic terms arise from string fluctuations within the S^3, whereas the non-analytic and exponential terms, which are not captured by the Bethe ansatz, originate from the fluctuations in all directions within the supersymmetric sigma model on AdS_5 x S^5. We also comment on the case of spinning string in AdS_3 x S^1.

D-Brane Charges in Gepner Models

We construct Gepner models in terms of coset conformal field theories and compute their twisted equivariant K-theories. These classify the D-brane charges on the associated geometric backgrounds and therefore agree with the topological K-theories. We show this agreement for various cases, in particular the Fermat quintic.

On the plane-wave cubic vertex

The exact bosonic Neumann matrices of the cubic vertex in plane-wave light-cone string field theory are derived using the contour integration techniques developed in our earlier paper. This simplifies the original derivation of the vertex. In particular, the Neumann matrices are written in terms of μ-deformed Gamma-functions, thus casting them into a form that elegantly generalizes the well-known flat-space solution. The asymptotics of the μ-deformed Gamma-functions allow one to determine the large-μbehaviour of the Neumann matrices including exponential corrections. We provide an explicit expression for the first exponential correction and make a conjecture for the subsequent exponential correction terms.

Stringy sums and corrections to the quantum string Bethe ansatz

We analyze the effects of zeta-function regularization on the evaluation of quantum corrections to spinning strings. Previously, this method was applied in the sl(2) subsector and yielded agreement to third order in perturbation theory with the quantum string Bethe ansatz. In this note we discuss related sums and compare zeta-function regularization against exact evaluation of the sums, thereby showing that the zeta-function regularized expression misses out perturbative as well as non-perturbative terms. In particular, this may imply corrections to the proposed quantum string Bethe equations. This also explains the previously observed discrepancy between the semi-classical string and the quantum string Bethe ansatz in the regime of large winding number.

The Algebraic Curve of 1-loop Planar N=4 SYM

The algebraic curve for the psu (2,2|4) quantum spin chain is determined from the thermodynamic limit of the algebraic Bethe ansatz. The Hamiltonian of this spin chain has been identified with the planar 1-loop dilatation operator of N=4 SYM. In the dual AdS_5 x S^5 string theory, various properties of the data defining the curve for the gauge theory are compared to the ones obtained from semiclassical spinning-string configurations, in particular for the case of strings on AdS_5 x S^1 and the su(2,2) spin chain agreement of the curves is shown.
