Bitangents to plane quartics via tropical geometry: rationality, $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumeration, and real signed count

We explore extensions of tropical methods to arithmetic enumerative problems such as $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumeration with values in the Grothendieck-Witt ring, and rationality over Henselian valued fields, using bitangents to plane quartics as a test case. We consider quartic curves over valued fields whose tropicalizations are smooth and satisfy a mild genericity condition. We then express obstructions to rationality of bitangents and their points of tangency in terms of twisting of edges of the tropicalization; the latter depends only on the tropicalization and the initial coefficients of the defining equation modulo squares. We also show that the GW-multiplicity of a tropical bitangent, i.e., the multiplicity with which its lifts contribute to the $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumeration of bitangents as defined by Larson and Vogt, can be computed from the tropicalization of the quartic together with the initial coefficients of the defining equation. As an application, we show that the four lifts of most tropical bitangent classes contribute $2\mathbb{H}$, twice the class of the hyperbolic plane, to the $\mathbb{A}^1$-enumeration. These results rely on a degeneration theorem relating the Grothendieck-Witt ring of a Henselian valued field to the Grothendieck-Witt ring of its residue field, in residue characteristic not equal to two.

Resolutions of local face modules, functoriality, and vanishing of local $h$-vectors

We study the local face modules of triangulations of simplices, i.e., the modules over face rings whose Hilbert functions are local $h$-vectors. In particular, we give resolutions of these modules by subcomplexes of Koszul complexes as well as functorial maps between modules induced by inclusions of faces. As applications, we prove a new monotonicity result for local $h$-vectors and new results on the structure of faces in triangulations with vanishing local $h$-vectors.

Tropical Linear Series and Tropical Independence

We propose a definition of tropical linear series that isolates some of the essential combinatorial properties of tropicalizations of not-necessarily-complete linear series on algebraic curves. The definition combines the Baker-Norine notion of rank with the notion of tropical independence and has the property that the restriction of a tropical linear series of rank r to a connected subgraph is a tropical linear series of rank r. We show that tropical linear series of rank 1 are finitely generated as tropical modules and state a number of open problems related to algebraic, combinatorial, and topological properties of higher rank tropical linear series

Compactified Jacobians as Mumford models

We show that relative compactified Jacobians of one-parameter smoothings of a nodal curve of genus g are Mumford models of the generic fiber. Each such model is given by an admissible polytopal decomposition of the skeleton of the Jacobian. We describe the decompositions corresponding to compactified Jacobians explicitly in terms of the auxiliary stability data and find, in particular, that in degree g there is a unique compactified Jacobian encoding slop stability, and it is induced by the tropical break divisor decomposition.

Valuations, completions, and hyperbolic actions of metabelian groups

Actions on hyperbolic metric spaces are an important tool for studying groups, and so it is natural, but difficult, to attempt to classify all such actions of a fixed group. In this paper, we build strong connections between hyperbolic geometry and commutative algebra in order to classify the cobounded hyperbolic actions of numerous metabelian groups up to a coarse equivalence. In particular, we turn this classification problem into the problems of classifying ideals in the completions of certain rings and calculating invariant subspaces of matrices. We use this framework to classify the cobounded hyperbolic actions of many abelian-by-cyclic groups associated to expanding integer matrices. Each such action is equivalent to an action on a tree or on a Heintze group (a classically studied class of negatively curved Lie groups). Our investigations incorporate number systems, factorization in formal power series rings, completions, and valuations.

The non-abelian Brill-Noether divisor on $\overline{\mathcal{M}}_{13}$ and the Kodaira dimension of $\overline{\mathcal{R}}_{13}$

The paper is devoted to highlighting several novel aspects of the moduli space of curves of genus 13, the first genus g where phenomena related to K3 surfaces no longer govern the birational geometry of M_g. We compute the class of the non-abelian Brill-Noether divisor on M_13 of curves that have a stable rank 2 vector bundle with many sections. This provides the first example of an effective divisor on M_g with slope less than 6+10/g. Earlier work on the Slope Conjecture suggested that such divisors may not exist. The main geometric application of our result is a proof that the Prym moduli space of genus 13 is of general type. Among other things, we also prove the Bertram-Feinberg-Mukai and the Strong Maximal Rank Conjectures on M_13

Recent Developments in Brill-Noether Theory

We briefly survey recent results related to linear series on curves that are general in various moduli spaces, highlighting the interplay between algebraic geometry on a general curve and the combinatorics of its degenerations. Breakthroughs include the proof of the Maximal Rank Theorem, which determines the Hilbert function of the general linear series of given degree and rank on the general curve in M_g, and complete analogs of the standard Brill-Noether theorems for curves that are general in Hurwitz spaces. Other advances include partial results in a similar direction for linear series in the Prym locus of a general unramified double cover of a general k-gonal curve and instances of the Strong Maximal Rank Conjecture.

Splitting groups with cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity two

A group $G$ splits over a subgroup $C$ if $G$ is either a free product with amalgamation $A \underset{C}{\ast} B$ or an HNN-extension $G=A \underset{C}{\ast} (t)$. We invoke Bass-Serre theory and classify all infinite groups which admit cubic Cayley graphs of connectivity two in terms of splittings over a subgroup.

Equivariant Grothendieck-Riemann-Roch and localization in operational K-theory

We produce a Grothendieck transformation from bivariant operational $K$-theory to Chow, with a Riemann-Roch formula that generalizes classical Grothendieck-Verdier-Riemann-Roch. We also produce Grothendieck transformations and Riemann-Roch formulas that generalize the classical Adams-Riemann-Roch and equivariant localization theorems. As applications, we exhibit a projective toric variety $X$ whose equivariant $K$-theory of vector bundles does not surject onto its ordinary $K$-theory, and describe the operational $K$-theory of spherical varieties in terms of fixed-point data. In an appendix, Vezzosi studies operational $K$-theory of derived schemes and constructs a Grothendieck transformation from bivariant algebraic $K$-theory of relatively perfect complexes to bivariant operational $K$-theory.

Topology of moduli spaces of tropical curves with marked points

We study a space of genus $g$ stable, $n$-marked tropical curves with total edge length $1$. Its rational homology is identified both with top-weight cohomology of the complex moduli space $M_{g,n}$ and with the homology of a marked version of Kontsevich's graph complex, up to a shift in degrees. We prove a contractibility criterion that applies to various large subspaces. From this we derive a description of the homotopy type of the tropical moduli space for $g = 1$, the top weight cohomology of $M_{1,n}$ as an $S_n$-representation, and additional calculations for small $(g,n)$. We also deduce a vanishing theorem for homology of marked graph complexes from vanishing of cohomology of $M_{g,n}$ in appropriate degrees, and comment on stability phenomena, or lack thereof.

Tropical curves, graph complexes, and top weight cohomology of M_g

We study the topology of a space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with volume 1, showing that its reduced rational homology is canonically identified with both the top weight cohomology of M_g and also with the genus g part of the homology of Kontsevich's graph complex. Using a theorem of Willwacher relating this graph complex to the Grothendieck-Teichmueller Lie algebra, we deduce that H^{4g-6}(M_g;Q) is nonzero for g=3, g=5, and g at least 7. This disproves a recent conjecture of Church, Farb, and Putman as well as an older, more general conjecture of Kontsevich. We also give an independent proof of another theorem of Willwacher, that homology of the graph complex vanishes in negative degrees.

Tropical moduli spaces as symmetric Delta-complexes

We develop techniques for studying fundamental groups and integral singular homology of symmetric Delta-complexes, and apply these techniques to study moduli spaces of stable tropical curves of unit volume, with and without marked points. As one application, we show that Delta_g and Delta_{g,n} are simply connected, for positive g. We also show that Delta_3 is homotopy equivalent to the 5-sphere, and that Delta_4 has 3-torsion in H_5.

On the strong maximal rank conjecture in genus 22 and 23

We develop new methods to study tropicalizations of linear series and show linear independence of sections. Using these methods, we prove two new cases of the strong maximal rank conjecture for linear series of degree 25 and 26 on curves of genus 22 and 23, respectively.

The tropicalization of the moduli space of curves II: Topology and applications

We study the topology of the tropical moduli space parametrizing stable tropical curves of genus g with n marked points in which the bounded edges have total length 1, and prove that it is highly connected. Using the identification of this space with the dual complex of the boundary in the moduli space of stable algebraic curves, we give a simple expression for the top weight cohomology of M_{1,n} as a representation of the symmetric group and describe an explicit dual basis in homology consisting of abelian cycles for the pure mapping class group.

A tropical motivic Fubini theorem with applications to Donaldson-Thomas theory

We present a new tool for the calculation of Denef and Loeser's motivic nearby fiber and motivic Milnor fiber: a motivic Fubini theorem for the tropicalization map, based on Hrushovski and Kazhdan's theory of motivic volumes of semi-algebraic sets. As applications, we prove a conjecture of Davison and Meinhardt on motivic nearby fibers of weighted homogeneous polynomials, and give a very short and conceptual new proof of the integral identity conjecture of Kontsevich and Soibelman, first proved by Lê Quy Thuong. Both of these conjectures emerged in the context of motivic Donaldson-Thomas theory.

Tropical refined curve counting via motivic integration

We propose a geometric interpretation of Block and Göttsche's refined tropical curve counting invariants in terms of virtual $χ_{-y}$-specializations of motivic measures of semialgebraic sets in relative Hilbert schemes. We prove that this interpretation is correct for linear series of genus 1, and in arbitrary genus after specializing from $χ_{-y}$ to Euler characteristic.
