Tropical refined curve counting via motivic integration

We propose a geometric interpretation of Block and Göttsche's refined tropical curve counting invariants in terms of virtual $χ_{-y}$-specializations of motivic measures of semialgebraic sets in relative Hilbert schemes. We prove that this interpretation is correct for linear series of genus 1, and in arbitrary genus after specializing from $χ_{-y}$ to Euler characteristic.

Diagonal splittings of toric varieties and unimodularity

We use a polyhedral criterion for the existence of diagonal splittings to investigate which toric varieties X are diagonally split. Our results are stated in terms of the vector configuration given by primitive generators of the 1-dimensional cones in the fan defining X. We show, in particular, that X is diagonally split at all q if and only if this configuration is unimodular, and X is not diagonally split at any q if this configuration is not 2-regular. We also study implications for the possibilities for the set of q at which a toric variety X is diagonally split.

Combinatorial and inductive methods for the tropical maximal rank conjecture

We produce new combinatorial methods for approaching the tropical maximal rank conjecture, including inductive procedures for deducing new cases of the conjecture on graphs of increasing genus from any given case. Using explicit calculations in a range of base cases, we prove this conjecture for the canonical divisor, and in a wide range of cases for m=3, extending previous results for m=2.

Nonarchimedean geometry, tropicalization, and metrics on curves

We develop a number of general techniques for comparing analytifications and tropicalizations of algebraic varieties. Our basic results include a projection formula for tropical multiplicities and a generalization of the Sturmfels-Tevelev multiplicity formula in tropical elimination theory to the case of a nontrivial valuation. For curves, we explore in detail the relationship between skeletal metrics and lattice lengths on tropicalizations and show that the maps from the analytification of a curve to the tropicalizations of its toric embeddings stabilize to an isometry on finite subgraphs. Other applications include generalizations of Speyer's well-spacedness condition and the Katz-Markwig-Markwig results on tropical j-invariants.

Operational K-theory

We study the operational bivariant theory associated to the covariant theory of Grothendieck groups of coherent sheaves, and prove that it has many geometric properties analogous to those of operational Chow theory. This operational K-theory agrees with Grothendieck groups of vector bundles on smooth varieties, admits a natural map from the Grothendieck group of perfect complexes on general varieties, satisfies descent for Chow envelopes, and is A^1-homotopy invariant. Furthermore, we show that the operational K-theory of a complete linear variety is dual to the Grothendieck group of coherent sheaves. As an application, we show that the K-theory of perfect complexes on any complete toric threefold surjects onto this group. Finally, we identify the equivariant operational K-theory of an arbitrary toric variety with the ring of integral piecewise exponential functions on the associated fan.

Tropical independence II: The maximal rank conjecture for quadrics

Building on our earlier results on tropical independence and shapes of divisors in tropical linear series, we give a tropical proof of the maximal rank conjecture for quadrics. We also prove a tropical analogue of Max Noether's theorem on quadrics containing a canonically embedded curve, and state a combinatorial conjecture about tropical independence on chains of loops that implies the maximal rank conjecture for algebraic curves.

On a Cohen-Lenstra Heuristic for Jacobians of Random Graphs

In this paper, we make specific conjectures about the distribution of Jacobians of random graphs with their canonical duality pairings. Our conjectures are based on a Cohen-Lenstra type heuristic saying that a finite abelian group with duality pairing appears with frequency inversely proportional to the size of the group times the size of the group of automorphisms that preserve the pairing. We conjecture that the Jacobian of a random graph is cyclic with probability a little over .7935. We determine the values of several other statistics on Jacobians of random graphs that would follow from our conjectures. In support of the conjectures, we prove that random symmetric matrices over the p-adic integers, distributed according to Haar measure, have cokernels distributed according to the above heuristic. We also give experimental evidence in support of our conjectures.

Cremona symmetry in Gromov-Witten theory

We establish the existence of a symmetry within the Gromov-Witten theory of $\mathbb{CP}^n$ and its blowup along points. The nature of this symmetry is encoded in the Cremona transform and its resolution, which lives on the toric variety of the permutohedron. This symmetry expresses some difficult to compute invariants in terms of others less difficult to compute. We focus on enumerative implications; in particular this technique yields a one line proof of the uniqueness of the rational normal curve. Our method involves a study of the toric geometry of the permutohedron, and degeneration of Gromov-Witten invariants.

Lifting divisors on a generic chain of loops

Let C be a curve over a complete valued field with infinite residue field whose skeleton is a chain of loops with generic edge lengths. We prove that any divisor on the chain of loops that is rational over the value group lifts to a divisor of the same rank on C, confirming a conjecture of Cools, Draisma, Robeva, and the third author.

On the structure of nonarchimedean analytic curves

Let K be an algebraically closed, complete nonarchimedean field and let X be a smooth K-curve. In this paper we elaborate on several aspects of the structure of the Berkovich analytic space X^an. We define semistable vertex sets of X^an and their associated skeleta, which are essentially finite metric graphs embedded in X^an. We prove a folklore theorem which states that semistable vertex sets of X are in natural bijective correspondence with semistable models of X, thus showing that our notion of skeleton coincides with the standard definition of Berkovich. We use the skeletal theory to define a canonical metric on H(X^an) := X^an - X(K), and we give a proof of Thuillier's nonarchimedean Poincaré-Lelong formula in this language using results of Bosch and Lütkebohmert.

The tropicalization of the moduli space of curves

We show that the skeleton of the Deligne-Mumford-Knudsen moduli stack of stable curves is naturally identified with the moduli space of extended tropical curves, and that this is compatible with the "naive" set-theoretic tropicalization map. The proof passes through general structure results on the skeleton of a toroidal Deligne-Mumford stack. Furthermore, we construct tautological forgetful, clutching, and gluing maps between moduli spaces of extended tropical curves and show that they are compatible with the analogous tautological maps in the algebraic setting.

Limits of tropicalizations

We give general criteria under which the limit of a system of tropicalizations of a scheme over a nonarchimedean field is homeomorphic to the analytification of the scheme. As an application, we show that the analytification of an arbitrary closed subscheme of a toric variety is naturally homeomorphic to the limit of its tropicalizations, generalizing an earlier result of the third author for quasiprojective varieties.

Lifting tropical intersections

We show that points in the intersection of the tropicalizations of subvarieties of a torus lift to algebraic intersection points with expected multiplicities, provided that the tropicalizations intersect in the expected dimension. We also prove a similar result for intersections inside an ambient subvariety of the torus, when the tropicalizations meet inside a facet of multiplicity 1. The proofs require not only the geometry of compactified tropicalizations of subvarieties of toric varieties, but also new results about the geometry of finite type schemes over non-noetherian valuation rings of rank 1. In particular, we prove subadditivity of codimension and a principle of continuity for intersections in smooth schemes over such rings, generalizing well-known theorems over regular local rings. An appendix on the topology of finite type morphisms may also be of independent interest.

Connectivity of tropicalizations

We show that the tropicalization of an irreducible variety over a complete or algebraically closed valued field is connected through codimension 1, giving an affirmative answer in all characteristics to a question posed by Einsiedler, Lind, and Thomas in 2003.

Correction to "Fibers of tropicalization"

This note explains an error in Proposition 5.1 of "Fibers of tropicalization," Math. Z. 262 (2009), no. 2, 301-311, discovered by W. Buczynska and F. Sottile, and fills the resulting gap in the proof of the paper's main theorem.
