Morphological Phase Separation in Unstable Thin Films: Pattern Formation and Growth

We present results from a comprehensive numerical study of {\it morphological phase separation} (MPS) in unstable thin liquid films on a 2-dimensional substrate. We study the quantitative properties of the evolution morphology via several experimentally relevant markers, e.g., correlation function, structure factor, domain-size and defect-size probability distributions, and growth laws. Our results suggest that the late-stage morphologies exhibit dynamical scaling, and their evolution is self-similar in time. We emphasize the analogies and differences between MPS in films and segregation kinetics in unstable binary mixtures.

Domain Growth and Ordering Kinetics in Dense Quark Matter

The kinetics of chiral transitions in quark matter is studied in a two flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model. We focus on the phase ordering dynamics subsequent to a temperature quench from the massless quark phase to the massive quark phase. We study the dynamics by considering a phenomenological model (Ginzburg-Landau free-energy functional). The morphology of the ordering system is characterized by the scaling of the order-parameter correlation function.

Hydrodynamic Crossovers in Surface-Directed Spinodal Decomposition and Surface Enrichment

We present comprehensive molecular dynamics (MD) results for the kinetics of surface-directed spinodal decomposition (SDSD) and surface enrichment (SE) in binary mixtures at wetting surfaces. We study the surface morphology and the growth dynamics of the wetting and enrichment layers. The growth law for the thickness of these layers shows a crossover from a diffusive regime to a hydrodynamic regime. We provide phenomenological arguments to understand this crossover.

Amplification of Fluctuations in Unstable Systems with Disorder

We study the early-stage kinetics of thermodynamically unstable systems with quenched disorder. We show analytically that the growth of initial fluctuations is amplified by the presence of disorder. This is confirmed by numerical simulations of morphological phase separation (MPS) in thin liquid films and spinodal decomposition (SD) in binary mixtures. We also discuss the experimental implications of our results.

Kinetics of Surface Enrichment: A Molecular Dynamics Study

We use molecular dynamics (MD) to study the kinetics of surface enrichment (SE) in a stable homogeneous mixture (AB), placed in contact with a surface which preferentially attracts A. The SE profiles show a characteristic double-exponential behavior with two length scales: ξ_-, which rapidly saturates to its equilibrium value, and ξ_+, which diverges as a power-law with time (ξ_+ \sim t^θ). We find that hydrodynamic effects result in a crossover of the growth exponent from θ\simeq 0.5 to θ\simeq 1.0. There is also a corresponding crossover in the growth dynamics of the SE-layer thickness.

Mass-Transport Models with Fragmentation and Aggregation

We present a review of nonequilibrium phase transitions in mass-transport models with kinetic processes like fragmentation, diffusion, aggregation, etc. These models have been used extensively to study a wide range of physical problems. We provide a detailed discussion of the analytical and numerical techniques used to study mass-transport phenomena.

Mass-Transport Models with Multiple-Chipping Processes

We study mass-transport models with multiple-chipping processes. The rates of these processes are dependent on the chip size and mass of the fragmenting site. In this context, we consider k-chip moves (where k = 1, 2, 3, ....); and combinations of 1-chip, 2-chip and 3-chip moves. The corresponding mean-field (MF) equations are solved to obtain the steady-state probability distributions, P (m) vs. m. We also undertake Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of these models. The MC results are in excellent agreement with the corresponding MF results, demonstrating that MF theory is exact for these models.

Spinodal Phase Separation in Liquid Films with Quenched Disorder

We study spinodal phase separation in unstable thin liquid films on chemically disordered substrates via simulations of the thin-film equation. The disorder is characterized by immobile patches of varying size and Hamaker constant. The effect of disorder is pronounced in the early stages (amplification of fluctuations), remains during the intermediate stages and vanishes in the late stages (domain growth). These findings are in contrast to the well-known effects of quenched disorder in usual phase-separation processes, viz., the early stages remain undisturbed and domain growth is slowed down in the asymptotic regime. We also address the inverse problem of estimating disorder by thin-film experiments.

Scaling Behavior of Response Functions in the Coarsening Dynamics of Disordered Ferromagnets

We study coarsening dynamics in the ferromagnetic random bond Ising model in d = 1; 2. We focus on the validity of super-universality and the scaling properties of the response functions. In the d = 1 case, we obtain a complete understanding of the evolution, from pre- asymptotic to asymptotic behavior. The corresponding response function shows a clear violation of super-universality. Further, our results for d = 1; 2 settle the controversy regarding the decay exponent which characterizes the response function.

Kinetics of Phase Separation in Fluids: A Molecular Dynamics Study

We present results from extensive 3-d molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of phase separation kinetics in fluids. A coarse-graining procedure is used to obtain state-of-the-art MD results. We observe an extended period of temporally linear growth in the viscous hydrodynamic regime. The morphological similarity of coarsening in fluids and solids is also quantified. The velocity field is characterized by the presence of monopole-like defects, which yield a generalized Porod tail in the corresponding structure factor.

Kinetics of chiral phase transition in hot and dense quark matter

The kinetics of chiral transitions in hot and dense quark matter is studied via a microscopic framework (Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model) and a phenomenological model (Ginzburg-Landau free energy). We focus on the far-from-equilibrium ordering dynamics subsequent to a quench from the massless quark phase to the massive quark phase. The morphology of the ordering system is characterized by the scaling of the order-parameter correlation function. The domain growth process obeys the Allen-Cahn growth law, $L(t)\sim t^{1/2}$. We also study the growth of bubble of the stable massive phase in a background of the metastable massive phase.

Reliability of fluctuation-induced transport in a Maxwell-demon-type engine

We study the transport properties of an overdamped Brownian particle which is simultaneously in contact with two thermal baths. The first bath is modeled by an additive thermal noise at temperature $T_A$. The second bath is associated with a multiplicative thermal noise at temperature $T_B$. The analytical expressions for the particle velocity and diffusion constant are derived for this system, and the reliability or coherence of transport is analyzed by means of their ratio in terms of a dimensionless Péclet number. We find that the transport is not very coherent, though one can get significantly higher currents.

Kinetics of Spinodal Phase Separation in Unstable Thin Liquid Films

We study universality in the kinetics of spinodal phase separation in unstable thin liquid films, via simulations of the thin film equation. It is shown that in addition to morphology and free energy, the number density of local maxima in the film profile can also be used to identify the early, intermediate and late stages of spinodal phase separation. A universal curve between the number density of local maxima and rescaled time describes the kinetics of early stage in d = 2, 3. The Lifshitz-Slyozov exponent of -1/3 describes the kinetics of the late stage in d = 2 even in the absence of coexisting equilibrium phases.

Spinodal decomposition in polymer mixtures via surface diffusion

We present experimental results for spinodal decomposition in polymer mixtures of gelatin and dextran. The domain growth law is found to be consistent with t^1/4-growth over extended time-regimes. Similar results are obtained from lattice simulations of a polymer mixture. This slow growth arises due to the suppression of the bulk mobility of polymers. In that case, spinodal decomposition is driven by the diffusive transport of material along domain interfaces, which gives rise to a t^1/4-growth law.

Kinetics of Phase Separation in Thin Films: Simulations for the Diffusive Case

We study the diffusion-driven kinetics of phase separation of a symmetric binary mixture (AB), confined in a thin-film geometry between two parallel walls. We consider cases where (a) both walls preferentially attract the same component (A), and (b) one wall attracts A and the other wall attracts B (with the same strength). We focus on the interplay of phase separation and wetting at the walls, which is referred to as {\it surface-directed spinodal decomposition} (SDSD). The formation of SDSD waves at the two surfaces, with wave-vectors oriented perpendicular to them, often results in a metastable layered state (also referred to as ``stratified morphology''). This state is reminiscent of the situation where the thin film is still in the one-phase region but the surfaces are completely wet, and hence coated with thick wetting layers. This metastable state decays by spinodal fluctuations and crosses over to an asymptotic growth regime characterized by the lateral coarsening of pancake-like domains. These pancakes may or may not be coated by precursors of wetting layers. We use Langevin simulations to study this crossover and the growth kinetics in the asymptotic coarsening regime.

Domain Growth in Ising Systems with Quenched Disorder

We present results from extensive Monte Carlo (MC) simulations of domain growth in ferromagnets and binary mixtures with quenched disorder. These are modeled by the "random-bond Ising model" and the "dilute Ising model" with either nonconserved (Glauber) spin-flip kinetics or conserved (Kawasaki) spin-exchange kinetics. In all cases, our MC results are consistent with power-law growth with an exponent $θ(T,ε)$ which depends on the quench temperature $T$ and the disorder amplitude $ε$. Such exponents arise naturally when the coarsening domains are trapped by energy barriers which grow logarithmically with the domain size. Our MC results show excellent agreement with the predicted dependence of $θ(T,ε)$.

Phase separation driven by surface diffusion: a Monte Carlo study

We propose a kinetic Ising model to study phase separation driven by surface diffusion. This model is referred to as "Model S", and consists of the usual Kawasaki spin-exchange kinetics ("Model B") in conjunction with a kinetic constraint. We use novel multi-spin coding techniques to develop fast algorithms for Monte Carlo simulations of Models B and S. We use these algorithms to study the late stages of pattern dynamics in these systems.

Domain Growth in Random Magnets

We study the kinetics of domain growth in ferromagnets with random exchange interactions. We present detailed Monte Carlo results for the nonconserved random-bond Ising model, which are consistent with power-law growth with a variable exponent. These results are interpreted in the context of disorder barriers with a logarithmic dependence on the domain size. Further, we clarify the implications of logarithmic barriers for both nonconserved and conserved domain growth.
