Pattern Formation in the Inhomogeneous Cooling State of Granular Fluids

We present results from comprehensive event-driven (ED) simulations of nonlinear pattern formation in freely-evolving granular gases. In particular, we focus on the the morphologies of density and velocity fields in the inhomogeneous cooling state (ICS). We emphasize the strong analogy between the ICS morphologies and pattern formation in phase ordering systems with a globally conserved order parameter.

Perturbative Linearization of Reaction-Diffusion Equations

We develop perturbative expansions to obtain solutions for the initial-value problems of two important reaction-diffusion systems, viz., the Fisher equation and the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) equation. The starting point of our expansion is the corresponding singular-perturbation solution. This approach transforms the solution of nonlinear reaction-diffusion equations into the solution of a hierarchy of linear equations. Our numerical results demonstrate that this hierarchy rapidly converges to the exact solution.

Surface-Directed Spinodal Decomposition in Binary Fluid Mixtures

We consider the phase separation of binary fluids in contact with a surface which is preferentially wetted by one of the components of the mixture. We review the results available for this problem and present new numerical results obtained using a mesoscopic-level simulation technique for the 3-dimensional problem.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics in the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation

We present results from a comprehensive analytical and numerical study of nonequilibrium dynamics in the 2-dimensional complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. In particular, we use spiral defects to characterize the domain growth law and the evolution morphology. An asymptotic analysis of the single-spiral correlation function shows a sequence of singularities -- analogous to those seen for time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) models with O(n) symmetry, where $n$ is even.

Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Complex Ginzburg-Landau Equation. I. Analytical Results

We present a detailed analytical and numerical study of nonequilibrium dynamics for the complex Ginzburg-Landau (CGL) equation. In particular, we characterize evolution morphologies using spiral defects. This paper (referred to as $\rm I$) is the first in a two-stage exposition. Here, we present analytical results for the correlation function arising from a single-spiral morphology. We also critically examine the utility of the Gaussian auxiliary field (GAF) ansatz in characterizing a multi-spiral morphology. In the next paper of this exposition (referred to as $\rm II$), we will present detailed numerical results.

Segregation of Granular Mixtures in a Rotating Drum

We formulate a phenomenological model for the segregation of binary mixtures of rough and smooth granular materials in a rotating drum. Our model successfully replicates a range of experimental behaviours, e.g., rapid radial segregation; slow axial segregation; and nonuniform radial structure of axial bands. We present some analytical results and detailed numerical results for our model.

Phase Separation Kinetics in a Model with Order-Parameter Dependent Mobility

We present extensive results from 2-dimensional simulations of phase separation kinetics in a model with order-parameter dependent mobility. We find that the time-dependent structure factor exhibits dynamical scaling and the scaling function is numerically indistinguishable from that for the Cahn-Hilliard (CH) equation, even in the limit where surface diffusion is the mechanism for domain growth. This supports the view that the scaling form of the structure factor is "universal" and leads us to question the conventional wisdom that an accurate representation of the scaled structure factor for the CH equation can only be obtained from a theory which correctly models bulk diffusion.

Ordering Kinetics of Conserved XY Models

The zero-temperature ordering kinetics of conserved XY models in spatial dimensions $d=2$ and 3 is studied using cell dynamical simulations. The growth of the characteristic length scale $L(t)$ is fully consistent with recent theoretical predictions: $L(t) \sim t^{1/4}$ for $d=2$ and $L(t) \sim (t\ln t)^{1/4}$ for $d=3$. A gaussian closure approximation describes the form of the structure factor rather well for $d=3$.

A Singular Perturbation Analysis for \\Unstable Systems with Convective Nonlinearity

We use a singular perturbation method to study the interface dynamics of a non-conserved order parameter (NCOP) system, of the reaction-diffusion type, for the case where an external bias field or convection is present. We find that this method, developed by Kawasaki, Yalabik and Gunton for the time-dependant Ginzburg-Landau equation and used successfully on other NCOP systems, breaks down for our system when the strength of bias/convection gets large enough.
