Relativistic Anyon Beam: Construction and Properties

Motivated by recent interest in photon and electron vortex beams, we propose the construction of a relativistic anyon beam. Following Jackiw and Nair [Phys. Rev. D 43, 1933 (1991)] we derive explicit form of relativistic plane wave solution of a single anyon. Subsequently we construct the planar anyon beam by superposing these solutions. Explicit expressions for the conserved anyon current are derived. Finally, we provide expressions for the anyon beam current using the superposed waves and discuss its properties. We also comment on the possibility of laboratory construction of anyon beam.

Particle current rectification in a quasi-periodic double-stranded ladder

We report transport properties and particle current rectification operation in a double-stranded tight-binding ladder network within non-equilibrium Green's function (NEGF) formalism that can easily be generalized in multi-stranded systems. First, we explore the rectification operation considering the model of an artificial double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) molecular system with Fibonacci type substitutional sequence. Substitutional sequences form quasi-periodic potentials. This analysis may shed new light in designing efficient nanoscale rectifier. It can also be directly implemented to different biomolecular systems like nucleic acids and most proteins as they follow quasi-periodic orders. Motivated with this fact, we consider different configurations depending on the choices of on-site energies and/or inter or intra strand nearest-neighbor hopping integrals in the form of Aubry-André-Harper (AAH) model (that also obeys quasi-periodic order), and in all the cases we find almost $100\%$ current rectification even at very low bias region. Along with this, we observe that the phase (positive or negative) of rectification can suitably be engineered by tuning the Fermi energy and AAH phase. The effects of electron-electron (e-e) interaction and temperature are also studied, which show that a reasonably large rectification can be observed even for moderate temperature range and e-e interaction strength.

Engineering magnetoresistance: A new perspective

A new proposal is given to achieve high degree of magnetoresistance (MR) in a magnetic quantum device where two magnetic layers are separated by a non-magnetic (NM) quasiperiodic layer that acts as a spacer. The NM spacer is chosen in the form of well-known Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model which essentially gives the non-trivial features in MR due to its gaped spectrum and yields the opportunities of controlling MR selectively by tuning the AAH phase externally. We also explore the role of dephasing on magnetotransport to make the model more realistic. Finally, we illustrate the experimental possibilities of our proposed quantum system.

Controlled charge and spin current rectifications in a spin polarized device

Quasicrystals have been the subject of intense research in the discipline of condensed matter physics due to their non-trivial characteristic features. In the present work we put forward a new prescription to realize both charge and spin current rectifications considering a one-dimensional quasicrystal whose site energies and/or nearest-neighbor hopping (NNH) integrals are modulated in the form of well known Aubry-André or Harper (AAH) model, a classic example of an aperiodic system. Each site of the chain contains a finite magnetic moment which is responsible for spin separation, and, in presence of finite bias an electric field is generated along the chain which essentially makes the asymmetric band structures under forward and reverse biased conditions, yielding finite rectification. Rectification is observed in two forms: (i) positive and (ii) negative, depending on the sign of currents in two bias polarities. These two forms can only be observed in the case of spin current rectification, while charge current shows conventional rectification operation. Moreover, we discuss how rectification ratio and especially its direction can be controlled by AAH phase which is always beneficial for efficient designing of a device. Finally, we critically examine the role of dephasing on rectification operations. Our study gives a new platform to analyze current rectification at nano-scale level, and can be verified in different quasi-crystals along with quantum Hall systems.

Unconventional charge and spin dependent transport properties of a graphene nanoribbon with line-disorder

Electronic transport with a line (or a few lines) of Anderson type disorder in a zigzag graphene nanoribbon is investigated in presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Such line disorders give rise to peculiar behavior in both charge as well as spin-polarized transmission in the following sense. In the weak disorder regime, the charge transport data show Anderson localization up to a certain disorder strength, beyond which the extended states emerge and start dominating over the localized states. These results are the hallmark signature of a selectively disordered (as opposed to bulk disorder) graphene nanoribbon. However, the spin-polarized transport shows a completely contradicting behavior. Further, the structural symmetries are shown to have an important role in the spintronic properties of the nanoribbons. Moreover, the edge-disorder scenario (disorder selectively placed at the edges) seems to hold promise for the spin-filter and switching device applications.

Controlled engineering of spin polarized transport properties in a zigzag graphene nanojunction

We investigate a novel way to manipulate the spin polarized transmission in a two terminal zigzag graphene nanoribbon in presence of Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction with circular shaped cavity engraved into it. A usual technique to control the spin polarized transport behaviour of a nanoribbon can be achieved by tuning the strength of the SO coupling, while we show that an efficient engineering of the spin polarized transport properties can also be done via cavities of different radii engraved in the nanoribbon. Simplicity of the technique in creating such cavities in the experiments renders an additional handle to explore transport properties as a function of the location of the cavity in the nanoribbon. Further, a systematic assessment of the interplay of the Rashba interaction and the dimensions of the nanoribbon is presented. These results should provide useful input to the spintronic behaviour of such devices. In addition to the spin polarization, we have also included an interesting discussion on the charge transmission properties of the nanoribbon, where, in absence of any SO interaction a metal-insulator transition induced by the presence of a cavity is observed.

Charge-based re-programmable logic device with built-in memory: New era in molecular electronics

We put forward a new proposal of designing charge-based logic devices considering a cyclic molecule that can be programmed and re-programmed for different functional logical operations and suitably engineered for data storage as well. The key idea is based on the appearance of bias induced circular current under asymmetric molecule-to-electrode interface configuration which does not dissipate even when the bias is off. Our results are valid for a broad range of parameter values, and provide a boost in the field of storage mechanism, reconfigurable computing, charge-based logic functions and other nano-scale applications.

Analytical study of nano-scale logical operations

A complete analytical prescription is given to perform three basic (OR, AND, NOT) and two universal (NAND, NOR) logic gates at nano-scale level using simple tailor made geometries. Two different geometries, ring-like and chain-like, are taken into account where in each case the bridging conductor is coupled to a local atomic site through a dangling bond whose site energy can be controlled by means of external gate electrode. The main idea is that when injecting electron energy matches with site energy of local atomic site transmission probability drops exactly to zero, whereas the junction exhibits finite transmission for other energies. Utilizing this prescription we perform logical operations, and, we strongly believe that the proposed results can be verified in laboratory. Finally, we numerically compute two-terminal transmission probability considering general models and the numerical results matches exactly well with our analytical findings.

Unconventional localization phenomena in a spatially non-uniform disordered material

A completely opposite behavior of electronic localization is revealed in a spatially non-uniform disordered material compared to the traditional spatially uniform disordered one. This fact is substantiated by considering an order-disorder separated (ODS) nanotube and studying the response of non-interacting electrons in presence of magnetic flux. We critically examine the behavior of flux induced energy spectra and circular current for different band fillings, and it is observed that maximum current amplitude (MCA) gradually decreases with disorder strength for weak disorder regime, while surprisingly it (MCA) increases in the limit of strong disorder suppressing the effect of disorder, resulting higher conductivity. This is further confirmed by investigating Drude weight and exactly same anomalous feature is noticed. It clearly gives a hint that localization-to-delocalization transition (LTD) is expected upon the variation of disorder strength which is justified by analyzing the nature of different eigenstates. Our analysis may give some significant inputs in analyzing conducting properties of different doped materials.

Logical operations using phenyl ring

Exploiting the effects of quantum interference we put forward an idea of designing three primary logic gates, OR, AND and NOT, using a benzene molecule. Under a specific molecule-lead interface geometry, anti-resonant states appear which play the crucial role for AND and NOT operations, while for OR gate no such states are required. Our analysis leads to a possibility of designing logic gates using simple molecular structure which might be significant in the area of molecular electronics.

Interface sensitivity on spin transport through a three-terminal graphene nanoribbon

Spin dependent transport in a three-terminal graphene nanoribbon (GNR) is investigated in presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction. Such a three-terminal structure is shown to be highly effective in filtering electron spins from an unpolarized source simultaneously into two output leads and thus can be used as an efficient spin filter device compared to a two-terminal one. The study of sensitivity of the spin-polarized transmission on the location of the outgoing leads results in interesting consequences and is explored in details. There exist certain symmetry relations between the two outgoing leads with regard to spin-polarized transport, especially when they are connected to the system in a particular manner. We believe that the prototype presented here can be realized experimentally and hence the results can also be verified.

Externally controlled high degree of spin polarization and spin inversion in a conducting junction: Two new approaches

We propose two new approaches for regulating spin polarization and spin inversion in a conducting junction within a tight-binding framework based on wave-guide theory. The system comprises a magnetic quantum ring with finite modulation in site potential is coupled to two non-magnetic electrodes. Due to close proximity an additional tunneling is established between the electrodes which regulates electronic transmission significantly. At the same time the phase associated with site potential, which can be tuned externally yields controlled transmission probabilities. Our results are valid for a wide range of parameter values which demonstrates the robustness of our proposition. We strongly believe that the proposed model can be realized in the laboratory.

All-spin logic operations: Memory device and Reconfigurable computing

Exploiting spin degree of freedom of electron a new proposal is given to characterize spin-based logical operations using a quantum interferometer that can be utilized as a programmable spin logic device (PSLD). The ON and OFF states of both inputs and outputs are described by {\em spin} state only, circumventing spin-to-charge conversion at every stage as often used in conventional devices with the inclusion of extra hardware that can eventually diminish the efficiency. All possible logic functions can be engineered from a single device without redesigning the circuit which certainly offers the opportunities of designing new generation spintronic devices. Moreover we also discuss the utilization of the present model as a memory device and suitable computing operations with proposed experimental setups.

Simultaneous spin-based Boolean logic operations with re-programmable functionality

Construction of parallel logic gates at nano-scale level undoubtedly improves the efficiency of computable operations. In this work we put forward a new idea of designing two distinct logical operations {\em simultaneously} in the two output leads of a three-terminal bridge setup which on one hand is highly stable as all the results are valid for a wide range of parameter values and on the other hand easy to engineer. Our system can be reprogrammed to have all the two-input logic gates with two operations at a time by selectively choosing the physical parameters describing the system, viz, Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction, magnetic flux, and Fermi energy. Finally, we explore the possible storage mechanism as well using our model.

High degree of current rectification at nanoscale level

We address an unexpectedly large rectification using a simple quantum wire with correlated site potentials. The external electric field, associated with voltage bias, leads to unequal charge currents for two different polarities of external bias and this effect is further enhanced by incorporating the asymmetry in wire-to-electrode coupling. Our calculations suggest that in some cases almost cent percent rectification is obtained for a wide bias window. This performance is valid against disorder configurations and thus we can expect an experimental verification of our theoretical analysis in near future.

Phase controlled metal-insulator transition in multi-leg quasiperiodic optical lattices

A tight-binding model of a multi-leg ladder network with a continuous quasiperiodic modulation in both the site potential and the inter-arm hopping integral is considered. The model mimics optical lattices where ultra-cold fermionic or bosonic atoms are trapped in double well potentials. It is observed that, the relative phase difference between the on-site potential and the inter-arm hopping integral, which can be controlled by the tuning of the interfering laser beams trapping the cold atoms, can result in a mixed spectrum of one or more absolutely continuous subband(s) and point like spectral measures. This opens up the possibility of a re-entrant metal-insulator transition. The subtle role played by the relative phase difference mentioned above is revealed, and we corroborate it numerically by working out the multi-channel electronic transmission for finite two-, and three-leg ladder networks. The extension of the calculation beyond the two-leg case is trivial, and is discussed in the work.

Modulation of circular current and associated magnetic field in a molecular junction: A new approach

A new proposal is given to control local magnetic field in a molecular junction. In presence of finite bias a net circular current is established in the molecular ring which induces a magnetic field at its centre. Allowing a direct coupling between two electrodes, due to their close proximity, and changing its strength we can regulate circular current as well as magnetic field for a wide range, without disturbing any other physical parameters. We strongly believe that our proposal is quite robust compared to existing approaches of controlling local magnetic field and can be verified experimentally.

Magnetic response of non-interacting and interacting electrons in a Möbius strip

We investigate characteristic features of both non-interacting and interacting electrons in a Möbius strip, the simplest possible one-sided topological system, in presence of an Aharonov-Bohm flux $ϕ$. Using Hartree-Fock mean field theory we determine energy eigenvalues for the interacting model, while for the non-interacting system an analytical prescription is given. The interplay between longitudinal and vertical motions of electrons along with on-site Hubbard interaction yield several anomalous features of persistent current associated with energy-flux characteristics. The variation of current with system size and its temperature dependences are also critically examined. Current is highly sensitive to both these two factors, and we find that for a particular system size it decreases exponentially with temperature. Our analysis can be helpful in investigating electronic transport through any non-trivial topological material.
