Characteristics of persistent spin current components in a quasi-periodic Fibonacci ring with spin-orbit interactions: Prediction of spin-orbit coupling and on-site energy

In the present work we investigate the behavior of all three components of persistent spin current in a quasi-periodic Fibonacci ring subjected to Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Analogous to persistent charge current in a conducting ring where electrons gain a Berry phase in presence of magnetic flux, spin Berry phase is associated during the motion of electrons in presence of a spin-orbit field which is responsible for the generation of spin current. The interplay between two spin-orbit fields along with quasi-periodic Fibonacci sequence on persistent spin current is described elaborately, and from our analysis, we can estimate the strength of any one of two spin-orbit couplings together with on-site energy, provided the other is known.

Unconventional low-field magnetic response of a diffusive ring with spin-orbit coupling

We report an unconventional behavior of electron transport in the limit of zero magnetic flux in a one-dimensional disordered ring, be it completely random or any correlated one, subjected to Rashba spin-orbit (SO) coupling. It exhibits much higher circulating current compared to a fully perfect ring for a wide range of SO coupling yielding larger electrical conductivity which is clearly verified from our Drude weight analysis.

Circulating current in 1D Hubbard rings with long-range hopping: Comparison between exact diagonalization method and mean-field approach

The interplay between Hubbard interaction, long-range hopping and disorder on persistent current in a mesoscopic one-dimensional conducting ring threaded by a magnetic flux $ϕ$ is analyzed in detail. Two different methods, exact numerical diagonalization and Hartree-Fock mean field theory, are used to obtain numerical results from the many-body Hamiltonian. The current in a disordered ring gets enhanced as a result of electronic correlation and it becomes more significant when contributions from higher order hoppings, even if they are too small compared to nearest-neighbor hopping, are taken into account. Certainly this can be an interesting observation in the era of long-standing controversy between theoretical and experimental results of persistent current amplitudes. Along with these we also find half-flux quantum periodic current for some typical electron fillings and kink-like structures at different magnetic fluxes apart from $ϕ=0$ and $\pm ϕ_0/2$. The scaling behavior of current is also discussed for the sake of completeness of our present analysis.

Selective spin transport through a quantum heterostructure: Transfer matrix method

In the present work we propose that a one-dimensional quantum heterostructure composed of magnetic and non-magnetic atomic sites can be utilized as a spin filter for a wide range of applied bias voltage. A simple tight-binding framework is given to describe the conducting junction where the heterostructure is coupled to two semi-infinite one-dimensional non-magnetic electrodes. Based on transfer matrix method all the calculations are performed numerically which describe two-terminal spin dependent transmission probability along with junction current through the wire. Our detailed analysis may provide fundamental aspects of selective spin transport phenomena in one-dimensional heterostructures at nano-scale level.

Multiple mobility edges in a 1D Aubry chain with Hubbard interaction in presence of electric field: Controlled electron transport

Electronic behavior of a 1D Aubry chain with Hubbard interaction is critically analyzed in presence of electric field. Multiple energy bands are generated as a result of Hubbard correlation and Aubry potential, and, within these bands localized states are developed under the application of electric field. Within a tight-binding framework we compute electronic transmission probability and average density of states using Green's function approach where the interaction parameter is treated under Hartree-Fock mean field scheme. From our analysis we find that selective transmission can be obtained by tuning injecting electron energy, and thus, the present model can be utilized as a controlled switching device.

Circulating persistent current and induced magnetic field in a fractal network

We present the overall conductance as well as the circulating currents in individual loops of a Sierpinski gasket (SPG) as we apply bias voltage via the side attached electrodes. SPG being a self-similar structure, its manifestation on loop currents and magnetic fields are examined in various generations of this fractal and it has been observed that for a given configuration of the electrodes, the physical quantities exhibit certain regularity as we go from one generation to another. Also a notable feature is the introduction of anisotropy in hopping causes an increase in magnitude of overall transport current. These features are a subject of interest in this article.

Metal-insulator transition in an one-dimensional half-filled interacting mesoscopic ring with spinless fermions: Exact results

We calculate persistent current of one-dimensional rings of fermions neglecting the spin degrees of freedom considering only nearest-neighbor Coulomb interactions with different electron fillings in both ordered and disordered cases. We treat the interaction exactly and find eigenenergies by exact diagonalization of many-body Hamiltonian and compute persistent current by numerical derivative method. We also determine Drude weight to estimate the conducting nature of the system. From our numerical results, we obtain a metal-insulator transition in half-filled case with increasing correlation strength U but away from half-filling no such transition is observed even for large U.

Anomalous magnetic response of a quasi-periodic mesoscopic ring in presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions

We investigate the properties of persistent charge current driven by magnetic flux in a quasi-periodic mesoscopic Fibonacci ring with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Within a tight-binding framework we work out individual state currents together with net current based on second-quantized approach. A significant enhancement of current is observed in presence of spin-orbit coupling and sometimes it becomes orders of magnitude higher compared to the spin-orbit interaction free Fibonacci ring. We also establish a scaling relation of persistent current with ring size, associated with the Fibonacci generation, from which one can directly estimate current for any arbitrary flux, even in presence of spin-orbit interaction, without doing numerical simulation. The present analysis indeed gives a unique opportunity of determining persistent current and has not been discussed so far.

Mathematica: A System of Computer Programs

Starting from the basic level of mathematica here we illustrate how to use a mathematica notebook and write a program in the notebook. Next, we investigate elaborately the way of linking of external programs with mathematica, so-called the mathlink operation. Using this technique we can run very tedious jobs quite efficiently, and the operations become extremely fast. Sometimes it is quite desirable to run jobs in background of a computer which can take considerable amount of time to finish, and this allows us to do work on other tasks, while keeping the jobs running. The way of running jobs, written in a mathematica notebook, in background is quite different from the conventional methods i.e., the techniques for the programs written in other languages like C, C++, F77, F90, F95, etc. To illustrate it, in the present article we study how to create a mathematica batch-file from a mathematica notebook and run it in the background. Finally, we explore the most significant issue of this article. Here we describe the basic ideas for parallelizing a mathematica program by sharing its independent parts into all other remote computers available in the network. Doing the parallelization, we can perform large computational operations within a very short period of time, and therefore, the efficiency of the numerical works can be achieved. Parallel computation supports any version of mathematica and it also works significantly well even if different versions of mathematica are installed in different computers. All the operations studied in this article run under any supported operating system like Unix, Windows, Macintosh, etc. For the sake of our illustrations, here we concentrate all the discussions only for the Unix based operating system.

Magneto-transport in closed and open mesoscopic loop structures: A review

Magneto-transport properties in closed and open loop structures are carefully reviewed within a tight-binding formalism. A novel mesoscopic phenomenon where a non-vanishing current is observed in a conducting loop upon the application of an Aharonov-Bohm flux $ϕ$ and we explore its behavior in the aspects of quantum phase coherence, electron-electron correlation and disorder. The essential results are analyzed in three different parts. First, we examine the behavior of persistent current in different branches of a zigzag carbon nanotube within a Hartree-Fock mean field approach using the second quantized formulation. The phase reversal of persistent current in several branches as a function of Hubbard interaction is found to exhibit interesting patterns. Our numerical results suggest a filling-dependent metal-insulator transition in a zigzag carbon nanotube. Next, we address the behavior of persistent current in an ordered-disordered separated nanotube keeping in mind a possible experimental realization of shell-doped nanowire which can provide a strange electronic behavior rather than uniformly doped nanowires. Finally, we focus our attention on the behavior of persistent current in an open loop geometry where we clamp an ordered binary alloy ring between two ideal semi-infinite electrodes to make an electrode-ring-electrode bridge. From our investigation we propose that under suitable choices of the parameter values the system can act as a $p$-type or an $n$-type semiconductor.

Conformation dependent magnetotransport in a single handed helical geometry

Conformation dependent circular current is investigated in a single handed helical geometry in presence of magnetic flux $ϕ$ within a Hartree-Fock mean field approach. The helical model is described by a set of non-planar rings connected by some vertical bonds where each ring is formed by introducing a non-zero hopping between the atoms $a$ and $b$ as shown in Fig.1. By stretching and compressing the geometry, circular current can be regulated significantly and thus the system can be exploited to design current controlled device at the nano-scale level. The proximity effect between the atomic sites $a$ and $b$ is also discussed in detail which exhibits interesting results.

Curvature effect on spin polarization in a three-terminal geometry in presence of Rashba spin-orbit interaction

The robust effect of curvature on spin polarization is reported in a three-terminal bridge system where the bridging material is subjected to Rashba spin-orbit interaction. The results are examined considering two different geometric configurations, ring- and linear-like, of the material which is coupled to one input and two output leads. Our results exhibit absolute zero spin polarization for the linear sample, while finite polarization is obtained in output leads for the ring-like sample.

Externally controlled selective spin transfer through a two-terminal bridge setup

A new way of getting controlled spin dependent transport through a two-terminal bridge setup is explored. The system comprises a magnetic quantum ring which is directly coupled to a magnetic quantum wire and subjected to an in-plane electric field perpendicular to the wire. Without directly changing system parameters, one can regulate spin currents simply by tuning the external electric field under a finite bias drop across the wire. For some particular field strengths a high degree of spin polarization can be achieved and thus the system can essentially be utilized as an externally controlled spin polarized device. A detailed comparison of spin current magnitudes obtained from other bridge setups is also examined to make the present investigation a self contained study.

Externally controlled local magnetic field in a conducting mesoscopic ring coupled to a quantum wire

In the present work the possibility of regulating local magnetic field in a quantum ring is investigated theoretically. The ring is coupled to a quantum wire and subjected to an in-plane electric field. Under a finite bias voltage across the wire a net circulating current is established in the ring which produces a strong magnetic field at its centre. This magnetic field can be tuned externally in a wide range by regulating the in-plane electric field, and thus, our present system can be utilized to control magnetic field at a specific region. The feasibility of this quantum system in designing spin-based quantum devices is also analyzed.

Persistent charge and spin currents in a quantum ring using Green's function technique: Interplay between magnetic flux and spin-orbit interactions

We put forward a new approach based on Green's function formalism to evaluate precisely persistent charge and spin currents in an Aharonov-Bohm ring subjected to Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Unlike conventional methods our present scheme circumvents direct evaluation of eigenvalues and eigenstates of the system Hamiltonian to determine persistent currents which essentially reduces possible numerical errors, especially for larger rings. The interplay of Aharonov-Bohm flux and spin-orbit interactions in persistent charge and spin currents of quantum rings is analyzed in detail and our results lead to a possibility of estimating the strength of any one of the spin-orbit fields provided the other one is known. All these features are exactly invariant even in presence of impurities, and therefore, can be substantiated experimentally.

Electric field induced localization phenomena in a ladder network with superlattice configuration: Effect of backbone environment

Electric field induced localization properties of a tight-binding ladder network in presence of backbone sites are investigated. Based on Green's function formalism we numerically calculate two-terminal transport together with density of states for different arrangements of atomic sites in the ladder and its backbone. Our results lead to a possibility of getting multiple mobility edges which essentially plays a switching action between a completely opaque to fully or partly conducting region upon the variation of system Fermi energy, and thus, support in fabricating mesoscopic or DNA-based switching devices.

Spin-orbit interaction induced spin selective transmission through a multi-terminal mesoscopic ring

Spin dependent transport in a multi-terminal mesoscopic ring is investigated in presence of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. Within a tight-binding framework we use a general spin density matrix formalism to evaluate all three components ($P_x$, $P_y$ and $P_z$) of the polarization vector associated with the charge current through the outgoing leads. It explores the dynamics of the spin polarization vector of current propagating through the system subjected to the Rashba and/or the Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings. The sensitivity of the polarization components on the electrode-ring interface geometry is discussed in detail. Our present analysis provides an understanding of the coupled spin and electron transport in mesoscopic bridge systems.

A renormalization group study of persistent current in a quasiperiodic ring

We propose a real-space renormalization group approach for evaluating persistent current in a multi-channel quasiperiodic fibonacci tight-binding ring based on a Green's function formalism. Unlike the traditional methods, the present scheme provides a powerful tool for the theoretical description of persistent current with a very high degree of accuracy in large periodic and quasiperiodic rings, even in the micron scale range, which emphasizes the merit of this work.
