Magnetic-non-magnetic superlattice chain with external electric field: Spin transport and the selective switching effect

Based on Green's function formalism, the existence of multiple mobility edges in a one-dimensional magnetic-non-magnetic superlattice geometry in presence of external electric field is predicted, and, it leads to the possibility of getting a metal-insulator transition at multiple values of Fermi energy. The role of electric field on electron localization is discussed for different arrangements of magnetic and non-magnetic atomic sites in the chain. We also analyze that the model quantum system can be used as a perfect spin filter for a wide range of energy.

Spontaneous Photoemission From Metamaterial Junction: A Conjecture

The possibility of spontaneous photon pair emission from a normal material - metamaterial junction is investigated in a quantum field theory setting. We consider a pair of photons arising from vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field close to the junction where one photon each comes from the normal and metamaterial sectors. Mixing between the positive and negative norm photon modes can give rise to spontaneous photoemission, the rate of which is calculated.

Positional dependence of energy gap on line defect in armchair graphene nanoribbons: Two-terminal transport and related issues

The characteristics of energy band spectrum of armchair graphene nanoribbons in presence of line defect are analyzed within a simple non-interacting tight-binding framework. In metallic nanoribbons an energy gap may or may not appear in the band spectrum depending on the location of the defect line, while in semiconducting ribbons the gaps are customized, yielding the potential applicabilities of graphene nanoribbons in nanoscale electronic devices. With a more general model, we also investigate two-terminal electron transport using Green's function formalism.

Verification of cosine squared relation of electronic conductance in a biphenyl molecule

The experimentally obtained (Venkataraman {\em et al}. \cite{latha}) cosine squared relation of electronic conductance in a biphenyl molecule is verified theoretically within a tight-binding framework. Using Green's function formalism we numerically calculate two-terminal conductance as a function of relative twist angle among the molecular rings and find that the results are in good agreement with the experimental observation.

Quantum transport in mesoscopic ring structures: Effects of impurities, long-range hopping and interactions

In the present review we make a comprehensive analysis of our understanding on electron transport in mesoscopic single-channel rings and multi-channel cylinders within a tight-binding framework. A spectacular mesoscopic phenomenon where a non-decaying current circulates in a small conducting loop is observed upon the application of an Aharonov-Bohm flux $ϕ$. To understand its behavior one has to focus attention on the interplay of quantum phase coherence, electron-electron correlation and disorder. This is a highly challenging problem and here we address it for some simple loop geometries with their detailed energy band structures to get an entire picture at the microscopic level. The behavior of low-field magnetic response of persistent current and its temperature dependence are also discussed.

Conformation-dependent electron transport through a biphenyl molecule: Circular current and related issues

We investigate the conformation-dependent electron transfer in a biphenyl molecule within a simple tight-binding framework. The overall junction current and circular currents in two benzene rings driven by applied bias voltage are calculated by using Green's function formalism. Our analysis may provide the possibilities of using organic molecules with loop substructures to design molecular spintronic devices, indicating the emergence of molecular spintronics.

Complete absence of localization in a family of disordered lattices

We present analytically exact results to show that, certain quasi one-dimensional lattices where the building blocks are arranged in a random fashion, can have an absolutely continuous part in the energy spectrum when special correlations are introduced among some of the parameters describing the corresponding Hamiltonians. We explicitly work out two prototype cases, one being a disordered array of a simple diamond network and isolated dots, and the other an array of triangular plaquettes and dots. In the latter case, a magnetic flux threading each plaquette plays a crucial role in converting the energy spectrum into an absolutely continuous one. A flux controlled enhancement in the electronic transport is an interesting observation in the triangle-dot system that may be useful while considering prospective devices. The analytical findings are comprehensively supported by extensive numerical calculations of the density of states and transmission coefficient in each case.

Mobility edge phenomenon in a Hubbard chain: A mean field study

We show that a tight-binding one-dimensional chain composed of interacting and non-interacting atomic sites can exhibit multiple mobility edges at different values of carrier energy in presence of external electric field. Within a mean field Hartree-Fock approximation we numerically calculate two-terminal transport by using Green's function formalism. Several cases are analyzed depending on the arrangements of interacting and non-interacting atoms in the chain. The analysis may be helpful in designing mesoscale switching devices.

Interplay of magnetic field and geometry in magneto-transport of mesoscopic loops with Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions

Electronic transport in closed loop structures is addressed within a tight-binding formalism and in the presence of both the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions. It has been shown that any one of the spin-orbit fields can be estimated precisely if the other one is known, by observing either the transmission resonance or anti-resonance of unpolarized electrons. The result is obtained through an exact analytic calculation for a simple square loop, and through a numerically exact formulation for a circular ring. The sensitivity of the transport properties on the geometry of the interferometer is discussed in details.

Spin Hall effect in a Kagome lattice driven by Rashba spin-orbit interaction

Using four-terminal Landauer-Büttiker formalism and Green's function technique, in this present paper, we calculate numerically spin Hall conductance (SHC) and longitudinal conductance of a finite size kagome lattice with Rashba spin-orbit (SO) interaction both in presence and absence of external magnetic flux in clean limit. In the absence of magnetic flux, we observe that depending on the Fermi surface topology of the system SHC changes its sign at different values of Fermi energy, along with the band center. Unlike the infinite system (where SHC is a universal constant $\pm \frac{e}{8 π}$), here SHC depends on the external parameters like SO coupling strength, Fermi energy, etc. We show that in the presence of any arbitrary magnetic flux, periodicity of the system is lost and the features of SHC tends to get reduced because of elastic scattering. But again at some typical values of flux ($ϕ=1/2, 1/4, 3/4..., etc.) the system retains its periodicity depending on its size and the features of spin Hall effect (SHE) reappears. Our predicted results may be useful in providing a deeper insight into the experimental realization of SHE in such geometries.

Magneto-transport in a quantum network: Evidence of a mesoscopic switch

We investigate magneto-transport properties of a $θ$ shaped three-arm mesoscopic ring where the upper and lower sub-rings are threaded by Aharonov-Bohm fluxes $ϕ_1$ and $ϕ_2$, respectively, within a non-interacting electron picture. A discrete lattice model is used to describe the quantum network in which two outer arms are subjected to binary alloy lattices while the middle arm contains identical atomic sites. It is observed that the presence of the middle arm provides localized states within the band of extended regions and lead to the possibility of switching action from a high conducting state to a low conducting one and vice versa. This behavior is justified by studying persistent current in the network. Both the total current and individual currents in three separate branches are computed by using second-quantized formalism and our idea can be utilized to study magnetic response in any complicated quantum network. The nature of localized eigenstates are also investigated from probability amplitudes at different sites of the quantum device.

A proposal for the measurement of Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interaction strengths in a single sample

We establish an exact analytical treatment for the determination of the strengths of the Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit interactions in a single sample by measuring persistent spin current. A hidden symmetry is exploited in the Hamiltonian to show that the spin current vanishes when the strength of the Dresselhaus interaction becomes equal to the strength of the Rashba term. The results are sustained even in the presence of disorder and thus an experiment in this regard will be challenging.

Magneto-transport in mesoscopic rings and cylinders: Effects of electron-electron interaction and spin-orbit coupling

We undertake an in-depth analysis of the magneto-transport properties in mesoscopic single-channel rings and multi-channel cylinders within a tight-binding formalism. The main focus of this review is to illustrate how the long standing anomalies between the calculated and measured current amplitudes carried by a small conducting ring upon the application of a magnetic flux $ϕ$ can be removed. We discuss two different cases. First, we examine the combined effect of second-neighbor hopping integral and Hubbard correlation on the enhancement of persistent current in presence of disorder. A significant change in current amplitude is observed compared to the traditional nearest-neighbor hopping model and the current amplitude becomes quite comparable to experimental realizations. In the other case we verify that in presence of spin-orbit interaction a considerable enhancement of persistent current amplitude takes place, and the current amplitude in a disordered ring becomes almost comparable to that of an ordered one. In addition to these, we also present the detailed band structures and some other related issues to get a complete picture of the phenomena at the microscopic level.

Magneto-transport in a binary alloy ring

Magneto-transport properties are investigated in a binary alloy ring subjected to an Aharonov-Bohm (AB) flux ϕwithin a single-band non-interacting tight-binding framework. In the first part, we expose analytically the behavior of persistent current in an isolated ordered binary alloy ring as functions of electron concentration N_e and AB flux ϕ. While, in the second part of the article, we discuss electron transport properties through a binary alloy ring attached to two semi-infinite one-dimensional metallic electrodes. The effect of impurities is also analyzed. From our study we propose that under suitable choices of the parameter values the system can act as a p-type or an n-type semiconductor.

Integer quantum Hall effect in a square lattice revisited

We investigate the phenomenon of integer quantum Hall effect in a square lattice, subjected to a perpendicular magnetic field, through Landauer-Büttiker formalism within the tight-binding framework. The oscillating nature of longitudinal resistance and near complete suppression of momentum relaxation processes are examined by studying the flow of charge current using Landauer-Keldysh prescription. Our analysis for the lattice model corroborates the finding obtained in the continuum model and provides a simple physical understanding.

Integer Quantum Hall Effect in a Lattice Model Revisited: Kubo Formalism

We investigate numerically the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) in a two-dimensional square lattice with non-interacting electrons subjected to disorder and uniform magnetic field in a direction perpendicular to the lattice plane. We employ nearest-neighbor tight-binding Hamiltonian to describe the system and obtain the longitudinal and transverse conductivities by using Kubo formalism. The interplay between the magnetic field and disorder is also discussed. Our analysis may be helpful in studying IQHE in any discrete lattice model.

Magnetic Response in a Zigzag Carbon Nanotube

Magnetic response of interacting electrons in a zigzag carbon nanotube threaded by a magnetic flux is investigated within a Hartree-Fock mean field approach. Following the description of energy spectra for both non-interacting and interacting cases we analyze the behavior of persistent current in individual branches of a nanotube. Our present investigation leads to a possibility of getting a filling-dependent metal-insulator transition in a zigzag carbon nanotube.

Multi-terminal magneto-transport in an interacting fractal network: a mean field study

Magneto-transport of interacting electrons in a Sierpinski gasket fractal is studied within a mean field approach. We work out the three-terminal transport and study the interplay of the magnetic flux threading the planar gasket and the dephasing effect introduced by the third lead. For completeness we also provide results of the two-terminal transport in presence of electron-electron interaction. It is observed that dephasing definitely reduces the transport, while the magnetic field generates a continuum in the transmission spectrum signaling a band of extended eigenstates in this non-translationally invariant fractal structure. The Hubbard interaction and the dephasing introduced by the third lead play their parts in reducing the average transmission, and opens up gaps in the spectrum, but can not destroy the continuum in the spectrum.
