Heavy-light flavour correlations of anisotropic flows at LHC energies within event-by-event transport approach

The heavy quarks (HQs) are unique probe of the hot QCD matter properties and their dynamics is coupled to the locally thermalized expanding quark gluon plasma. We present here a novel study of the event by event correlations between light and heavy flavour flow harmonics at LHC energy within a transport approach. Interaction between heavy quarks and light quarks have been taken into account exploring the impact of different temperature dependence of the transport coefficients $D_s$ and $Γ$. Our study indicates that $v^{heavy}_n-v^{light}_n$ correlation and the relative fluctuations of anisotropic flows, $σ_{v_{n}}/\langle v_n \rangle$, are novel observables to understand the heavy quark-bulk interaction and are sensitive to the temperature dependence even to moderate differences of $D_s(T)$, or $Γ(T)$. Hence a comparison of such new observables for HQ to upcoming experimental data at both RHIC and LHC can put further constraints on heavy quark transport coefficients and in particular on its temperature dependence toward a solid comparison between the phenomenological determination and the lattice QCD calculations.

Heavy quark dynamics in a hot magnetized QCD medium

The heavy quark drag and momentum diffusion have been investigated in a hot magnetized quark-gluon plasma, along the directions parallel and perpendicular to the magnetic field. The analysis is done within the framework of Fokker-Planck dynamics by considering the heavy quark scattering with thermal quarks and gluons at the leading order in the coupling constant. An extended quasiparticle model is adopted to encode the thermal QCD medium interactions in the presence of a magnetic field. Further, the higher Landau level effects on the temperature behaviour of the parallel and perpendicular components of the drag force and diffusion coefficients have studied. It has been observed that both the equation of state and the magnetic field play key roles in the temperature dependence of the heavy quark dynamics.

The cathode tube effect: heavy quarks probing the Glasma in p-Pb collisions

We study the propagation of charm quarks in the early stage of high energy proton-lead collision, considering the interaction of these quarks with the evolving Glasma by means of the Wong equations. Neglecting quantum fluctuations at the initial time the Glasma is made of longitudinal fields, but the dynamics leads to a quick formation of transverse fields; we estimate such a formation time as $Δt\approx 0.1$ fm/c which is of the same order of the formation time of heavy quark pairs $t_\mathrm{formation}\approx 1/(2m)$. Limiting ourselves to the simple case of a static longitudinal geometry, we find that heavy quarks are accelerated by the strong transverse color fields in the early stage and this leads to a tilting of the $c-$quarks spectrum towards higher $p_T$ states. This average acceleration can be understood in terms of drag and diffusion of $c-$quarks in a hot medium and appears to be similar to the one felt by the electrons ejected by the electron cannon in a cathode tube: we dub this effect as {\it cathode tube effect}. The tilting of the spectrum affects the nuclear modification factor, $R_\mathrm{pPb}$, suppressing this below one at low $p_T$ and making it larger than one at intermediate $p_T$. We compute $R_\mathrm{pPb}(p_T)$ after the evolution of charm quarks in the gluon fields and we find that its shape is in qualitative agreement with the measurements of the same quantity for $D-$mesons in proton-lead collisions.

Charmed Hadrons from Coalescence plus Fragmentation in relativistic nucleus-nucleus collisions at RHIC and LHC

In a coalescence plus fragmentation approach we calculate the heavy baryon/meson ratio and the $p_T$ spectra of charmed hadrons $D^{0}$, $D_{s}$ and $Λ_{c}^{+}$ in a wide range of transverse momentum from low $p_T$ up to about 10 GeV and discuss their ratios from RHIC to LHC energies without any change of the coalescence parameters. We have included the contribution from decays of heavy hadron resonances and also the one due to fragmentation of heavy quarks which do not undergo the coalescence process. The coalescence process is tuned to have all charm quarks hadronizing in the $p_T\rightarrow 0$ limit and at finite $p_T$ charm quarks not undergoing coalescence are hadronized by independent fragmentation. The $p_T$ dependence of the baryon/meson ratios are found to be sensitive to the masses of coalescing quarks, in particular the $Λ_{c}/D^{0}$ can reach values of about $\rm 1÷1.5 $ at $p_T \approx \, 3$ \mbox{GeV}, or larger, similarly to the light baryon/meson ratio like $p/π$ and $Λ/K$, however a marked difference is a quite weak $p_T$ dependence with respect to the light case, such that a larger value at intermediate $p_T$ implies a relatively large value also for the integrated yields. A comparison with other coalescence model and with the prediction of thermal model is discussed.

Effect of pre-equilibrium phase on $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ of heavy quarks in heavy ion collisions

Heavy quark $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ have been calculated at RHIC energy considering initial conditions with and without pre-equilibrium phase to highlight the effect of the latter on heavy quark observables. The momentum evolution of the heavy quark has been studied by means of the Boltzmann transport equation. To model the pre-equilibrium phase we have used the KLN initial condition. We have found that the pre-equilibrium phase impacts the $R_{AA}$ of about 20-25 $\%$ whereas the impact on $v_2$ is very negligible. We have also calculated heavy quark $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ in the case of initializations with early thermalized quark-gluon plasma. We have checked that the particular form of the initial spectrum is not very important for $R_{AA}$, the larger energy density being more important. In fact, comparing the results obtained within the two initializations we have found that one can mimic the impact of the pre-equilibrium phase using a early thermalized QGP medium.

Estimating the Charm Quark Diffusion Coefficient and thermalization time from D meson spectra at RHIC and LHC

We describe the propagation of charm quarks in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) by means of a Boltzmann transport approach. Non-perturbative interaction between heavy quarks and light quarks have been taken into account through a quasi-particle approach in which light partons are dressed with thermal masses tuned to lQCD thermodynamics. Such a model is able to describe the main feature of the non-perturbative dynamics: the enhancement of the interaction strength near $T_c$. We show that the resulting charm in-medium evolution is able to correctly predict simultaneously the nuclear suppression factor, $R_{AA}$, and the elliptic flow, $v_2$, at both RHIC and LHC energies and at different centralities. The hadronization of charm quarks is described by mean of an hybrid model of fragmentation plus coalescence and plays a key role toward the agreeement with experimental data. We also performed calculations within the Langevin approach which can lead to very similar $R_{AA}(p_T)$ as Boltzmann, but the charm drag coefficient as to be reduced by about a $30\%$ and also generates an elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ is about a $15\%$ smaller. We finally compare the space diffusion coefficient $2πTD_s$ extracted by our phenomenological approach to lattice QCD results, finding a satisfying agreement within the present systematic uncertainties. Our analysis implies a charm thermalization time, in the $p\rightarrow 0$ limit, of about $4-6 \, fm/c$ which is smaller than the QGP lifetime at LHC energy.

Directed Flow of Charm Quarks as a Witness of the Initial Strong Magnetic Field in Ultra-Relativistic Heavy Ion Collisions

Ultra-relativistic Heavy-Ion Collision (HIC) generates very strong initial magnetic field ($\vec B$) inducing a vorticity in the reaction plane. The high $\vec{B}$ influences the evolution dynamics that is opposed by the large Faraday current due to electric field generated by the time varying $\vec{B}$. We show that the resultant effects entail a significantly large directed flow ($v_1$) of charm quarks (CQs) compared to light quarks due to a combination of several favorable conditions for CQs, mainly: (i) unlike light quarks formation time scale of CQs, $τ_f \simeq \, 0.1 \rm fm/c$ is comparable to the time scale when $\vec B$ attains its maximum value and (ii) the kinetic relaxation time of CQs is similar to the QGP lifetime, this helps the CQ to retain the initial kick picked up from the electromagnetic field in the transverse direction. The effect is also odd under charge exchange allowing to distinguish it from the vorticity of the bulk matter due to the initial angular momentum conservation; conjointly thanks to its mass, $M_c >>Λ_{QCD}$, there should be no mixing with the chiral magnetic dynamics. Hence CQs provide very crucial and independent information on the strength of the magnetic field produced in HIC.

Propagation of heavy baryons in heavy-ion collisions

The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy baryons ($Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$) in the hadronic phase created in the latter stage of the heavy-ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies have been evaluated recently. In this work we compute some experimental observables, such as the nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ of heavy baryons at RHIC and LHC energies, highlighting the role of the hadronic phase contribution to these observables, which are going to be measured at Run 3 of LHC. For the time evolution of the heavy quarks in the QGP and heavy baryons in the hadronic phase we use the Langevin dynamics. For the hadronization of the heavy quarks to heavy baryons we employ Peterson fragmentation functions. We observe a strong suppression of both the $Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$. We find that the hadronic medium has a sizable impact on the heavy-baryon elliptic flow whereas the impact of hadronic medium rescattering is almost unnoticeable on the nuclear suppression factor. We evaluate the $Λ_c/D$ ratio at RHIC and LHC. We find that $Λ_c/D$ ratio remain unaffected due to the hadronic phase rescattering which enable it as a nobel probe of QGP phase dynamics along with its hadronization.

Heavy quark dynamics in QCD matter

Simultaneous description of heavy quark nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$ is a top challenge for all the existing models. We highlight how the temperature dependence of the energy loss/transport coefficients is responsible to address a large part of such a puzzle along with the the full solution of the Boltzmann collision integral for the momentum evolution of heavy quark. We consider four different models to evaluate the temperature dependence of drag coefficients of the heavy quark in the QGP. We have also highlighted the heavy quark dynamics in the presence of an external electromagnetic field which develops a sizable heavy quark directed flow, $v_1(y)$, can be measurable at LHC.

Transport coefficients of heavy baryons

We compute the transport coefficients (drag and momentum diffusion) of the low-lying heavy baryons $Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$ in a medium of light mesons formed at the later stages of high-energy heavy-ion collisions. We employ the Fokker-Planck approach to obtain the transport coefficients from unitarized baryon-meson interactions based on effective field theories that respect chiral and heavy-quark symmetries. We provide the transport coefficients as a function of temperature and heavy-baryon momentum, and analyze the applicability of certain nonrelativistic estimates. Moreover we compare our outcome for the spatial diffusion coefficient to the one coming from the solution of the Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck transport equation and we find a very good agreement between both calculations. The transport coefficients for $Λ_c$ and $Λ_b$ in a thermal bath will be used in a subsequent publication as input in a Langevin evolution code for the generation and propagation of heavy particles in heavy-ion collisions at LHC and RHIC energies.

Diffusion of hidden charm mesons in hadronic medium

The drag and diffusion coefficients of a hot hadronic medium have been evaluated by using hidden charm mesons as probes. The matrix elements for the evaluation of these coefficients are calculated using an effective theory as well as from scattering lengths. Although the transport coefficients show a significant rise with temperature its effects on the suppression of $J/ψ$ in hadronic matter is not significant.

Impact of momentum-space anisotropy on heavy quark dynamics in a QGP medium

Momentum space anisotropy present in the quark and gluon distribution functions in relativistic heavy ion collisions induces Chromo-Weibel instability in the hot QCD medium created therein. The impact of the Chromo-Weibel instability on the dynamics of a heavy-quark (HQ) traversing in the QGP medium is investigated within the framework of kinetic theory by studying the momentum and temperature behavior of HQ drag and diffusion coefficients. The physics of anisotropy is captured in an effective Vlasov term in the transport equation. The effects of the instability are handled by making a relation with the phenomenologically known jet quenching parameter in RHIC and LHC. Interestingly, the presence of instability significantly affect the temperature and momentum dependences of the HQ drag and diffusion coefficients. These results may have appreciable impact on the experimental observables such as, the nuclear suppression factor, $R_{AA}(p_T)$, and the elliptic flow, $v_2(p_T)$, of heavy mesons in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies which is a matter of future investigation.

Toward a simultaneous description of $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ for heavy quarks

The two key observables related to heavy quarks that have been measured in RHIC and LHC energies are the nuclear suppression factor $R_{AA}$ and the elliptic flow $v_2$. Simultaneous description of these two observables is a top challenge for all the existing models. We have highlighted how a consistent combination of four ingredients i.e the temperature dependence of the energy loss, full solution of the Boltzmann collision integral for the momentum evolution of heavy quark, hadronization by coalescence, then the hadronic rescattering, responsible to address a large part of such a puzzle. We have considered four different models to evaluate the temperature dependence of drag coefficients of the heavy quark in QGP. All these four different models are set to reproduce the same $R_{AA}$ as of the experiments. We have shown that for the same $R_{AA}$, the $v_2$ could be quite different depending on the interaction dynamics as well as other ingredients.

Heavy quark diffusion in pre-equilibrium stage of heavy ion collisions

The drag and diffusion coefficients of heavy quarks (HQs) have been evaluated in the pre-equilibrium phase of the evolving fireball produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The KLN and classical Yang-Mills spectra have been used for describing the momentum distributions of the gluons produced just after the collisions but before they thermalize. The interaction of the HQs with these gluons has been treated within the framework of perturbative QCD. We have observed that the HQs are dragged almost equally by the kinetically equilibrated and out-of-equilibrium gluonic systems. We have also noticed that the HQs diffusion in the pre-equilibrium gluonic phase is as fast as in the kinetically equilibrated gluons. Moreover, the diffusion is faster in the pre-equilibrium phase than in the chemically equilibrated quark-gluon plasma. These findings may have significant impact on the analysis of experimental results on the elliptic flow and the high momentum suppression of the open charm and beauty hadrons.

Toward a solution to the $R_{AA}$ and $v_2$ puzzle for heavy quarks

The heavy quarks constitutes a unique probe of the quark-gluon plasma properties. Both at RHIC and LHC energies a puzzling relation between the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and the elliptic flow $v_2(p_T)$ has been observed which challenged all the existing models, especially for D mesons. We discuss how the temperature dependence of the heavy quark drag coefficient is responsible for a large part of such a puzzle. In particular, we have considered four different models to evaluate the temperature dependence of drag and diffusion coefficients propagating through a quark gluon plasma (QGP). All the four different models are set to reproduce the same $R_{AA}(p_T)$ observed in experiments at RHIC and LHC energy. We point out that for the same $R_{AA}(p_T)$ one can generate 2-3 times more $v_2$ depending on the temperature dependence of the heavy quark drag coefficient. A non-decreasing drag coefficient as $ T \rightarrow\ T_c \,$ is a major ingredient for a simultaneous description of $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and $v_2(p_T)$.

Heavy Flavor in Medium Momentum Evolution: Langevin vs Boltzmann

The propagation of heavy quarks in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP) has been often treated within the framework of the Langevin equation (LV), i.e. assuming the momentum transfer is small or the scatterings are sufficiently forward peaked, small screening mass $m_D$. We address a direct comparison between the Langevin dynamics and the Boltzmann collisional integral (BM) when a bulk medium is in equilibrium at fixed temperature. We show that unless the cross section is quite forward peaked ($m_D\cong T $) or the mass to temperature ratio is quite large ($M_{HQ}/T \gtrsim 8-10$) there are significant differences in the evolution of the $p-$spectra and consequently on nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}(p_T)$. However for charm quark we find that very similar $R_{AA}(p_T)$ between the LV and BM can be obtained, but with a modified diffusion coefficient by about $\sim 15-50\%$ depending on the angular dependence of the cross section which regulates the momentum transfer. Studying also the momentum spread suffered by a single heavy quarks we see that at temperatures $T\gtrsim \, 250\,\rm MeV$ the dynamics of the scatterings is far from being of Brownian type for charm quarks. In the case of bottom quarks we essentially find no differences in the time evolution of the momentum spectra between the LV and the BM dynamics independently of the angular dependence of the cross section, at least in the range of temperature relevant for ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Finally, we have shown the possible impact of this study on $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and $v_2(p_T)$ for a realistic simulation of relativistic HIC. For larger $m_D$ the elliptic flow can be about $50\%$ larger for the Boltzmann dynamics with respect to the Langevin. This is helpful for a simultaneous reproduction of $R_{AA}(p_T)$ and $v_2(p_T)$.

Diffusion of $Λ_c$ in hot hadronic medium and its impact on $Λ_c/D$ ratio

The drag and diffusion coefficients of the $Λ_c(2286$ MeV) have been evaluated in the hadronic medium which is expected to be formed in the later stages of the evolving fire ball produced in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies. The interactions between the $Λ_c$ and the hadrons in the medium have been derived from an effective hadronic Lagrangian as well as from the scattering lengths, obtained in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HB$χ$PT). In both the approaches, the magnitude of the transport coefficients are turn out to be significant. A larger value is obtained in the former approach with respect to the latter. Significant values of the coefficients indicate substantial amount of interaction of the $Λ_c$ with the hadronic thermal bath. Furthermore, the transport coefficients of the $Λ_c$ is found to be different from the transport coefficients of $D$ meson. Present study indicates that the hadronic medium has a significant impact on the $Λ_c/D$ ratio in heavy ion collisions.

Nonconformal holographic model for D-meson suppression at energies available at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

The drag force of charm quarks propagating through a thermalized system of Quark Gluon Plasma (QGP) has been considered within the framework of both conformal/non-conformal Anti de Sitter (AdS) correspondence. Newly derived Einstein Fluctuation-Dissipation relation has been used to calculate the heavy flavor diffusion coefficients. Using the drag and diffusion coefficients as inputs Langevin equation has been solved to study the heavy flavor suppression factor. It has been shown that within conformal AdS correspondence the D-meson suppression at LHC energy can be reproduced where as the non-conformal AdS correspondence fail to reproduce the experimental results. It suggests collisional loss alone within non-conformal AdS correspondence can not reproduce the experimental results and inclusion of radiative loss becomes important.
