Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions

Magnetic skyrmions have attracted considerable attention recently for their huge potential in spintronic applications. Generally skyrmions are big compared to the atomic lattice constant, which allows for the Ginzburg-Landau type description in the continuum limit. Such a description successfully captures the main experimental observations on skyrmions in B20 compound without inversion symmetry. Skyrmions can also exist in inversion-symmetric magnets with competing interactions. Here we derive a general Ginzburg-Landau theory for skyrmions in these magnets valid in the long wavelength limit. We study the unusual static and dynamical properties of skyrmions based on the derived Ginzburg-Landau theory. We show that an easy axis spin anisotropy is sufficient to stabilize a skyrmion lattice. Interestingly, the skyrmion in inversion-symmetric magnets has a new internal degree of freedom associated with the rotation of helicity, i.e. the "spin" of the skyrmion as a particle, in addition to the usual translational motion of skyrmions (orbital motion). The orbital and spin degree of freedoms of an individual skyrmion can couple to each other, and give rise to unusual behavior that is absent for the skyrmions stabilized by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The derived Ginzburg-Landau theory provides a convenient and general framework to discuss skyrmion physics and will facilitate the search for skyrmions in inversion-symmetric magnets.

Vortex Crystals with Chiral Stripes in Itinerant Magnets

We study noncoplanar magnetic ordering in frustrated itinerant magnets. For a family of Kondo square lattice models with classical local moments, we find that a double-$Q$ noncoplanar vortex crystal has lower energy than the single-$Q$ helical order expected from the Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction whenever the lattice symmetry dictates four global maxima in the bare magnetic susceptibility. By expanding in the small Kondo exchange and the degree of noncoplanarity, we demonstrate that this noncoplanar state arises from a Fermi surface instability, and it is generic for a wide range of electron filling fractions whenever the two ordering wave vectors connect independent sections of the Fermi surface.

Spontaneous multipole ordering by local parity mixing

Broken spatial inversion symmetry in spin-orbital coupled systems leads to a mixing between orbitals with different parity, which results in unusual electronic structures and transport properties. We theoretically investigate the possibility of multipole ordering induced by a parity mixing. In particular, we focus on the system in which the parity mixing appears in a sublattice-dependent form. Starting from the periodic Anderson model with such a local parity mixing, we derive an extended Kondo lattice model with sublattice-dependent antisymmetric exchange couplings between itinerant electrons and localized spins. By the variational calculation, simulated annealing, and Monte Carlo simulation, we show that the model on a quasi-one-dimensional zig-zag lattice exhibits an odd-parity multipole order composed of magnetic toroidal and quadrupole components at and near half filling. The multipole order causes a band deformation with the band bottom shift and a magnetoelectric response. The results suggest that unusual odd-parity multipole orders will be widely observed in multi-orbital systems with local parity mixing.

Topological semimetal-to-insulator phase transition between noncollinear and noncoplanar multiple-Q states on a square-to-triangular lattice

Noncollinear and noncoplanar magnetic orders lead to unusual electronic structures and transport properties. We here investigate two types of multiple-Q magnetically ordered states and a topological phase transition between them in two dimensions. One is a coplanar but noncollinear double-Q state on a square lattice, which is a semimetal accommodating massless Dirac electrons. The other is a noncoplanar triple-Q state on a triangular lattice, which is a Chern insulator showing the quantum anomalous Hall effect. We discuss the peculiar electronic structures in these two multiple-Q states in a unified way on the basis of the Kondo lattice model, which suggests a quantum phase transition between the two states in a continuous change of lattice geometry between the square and triangular lattices. We systematically examine the possibility of such a transition by using the mean-field approximation for the ground state of the periodic Anderson model. After clarifying the parameter region in which the double-Q (triple-Q) state is stabilized on the square (triangular) lattice, we show that a continuous topological phase transition indeed takes place between the double-Q Dirac semimetal and the triple-Q Chern insulator on the square-to-triangular lattice. The nature of the transition is discussed by the topologically-protected edge states as well as the bulk magnetic and electronic properties. The results indicate that unusual critical phenomena may occur at finite temperature related with multiple-Q chiral spin-liquid states.

Toroidal order in a partially disordered state on a layered triangular lattice: implication to UNi4B

A partial disorder on a layered triangular lattice is theoretically investigated from a viewpoint of toroidal ordering and magnetoelectric effects. We consider an extended periodic Anderson model including a site-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling between conduction and localized electrons. We show that, by the mean-field approximation, the model exhibits a coplanar vortex-lattice-type magnetic order as observed in a hexagonal uranium compound UNi4B, in the parameter region with intermediate hybridization and electron correlation. This peculiar state accommodates a toroidal order, which leads to the linear magnetoelectric effect. We discuss the implications of our results to UNi4B, focusing on the possible source of the site-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling.

Quantum spin Hall effect in a two-orbital model on a honeycomb lattice

The spin Hall effect is investigated in a two-orbital tight-binding model on a honeycomb lattice. We show that the model exhibits three topologically-different insulating phases at half filling, which are distinguished by different quantized values of the spin Hall conductivity. We analytically determine the phase boundaries, where the valence and conduction bands touch with each other with forming the Dirac nodes at the Fermi level. The results are discussed in terms of the effective antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling. The relation to the Kane-Mele model and implications for a magnetoelectric effect are also discussed.

Multiple-Q Instability by (d-2)-dimensional Connections of Fermi Surfaces

We propose a general mechanism of multiple-Q ordering with noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures in itinerant magnets. By analyzing the fourth-order perturbation with respect to the spin-charge coupling, we find that the instability toward multiple-Q ordering is caused by (d-2)-dimensional connections of the Fermi surfaces in the extended Brillouin zone by the multiple-Q wave vectors: zero(one)-dimensional point (line) connections in the two(three)-dimensional systems. The instabilities are obtained as the "fixed points" in the two-parameter flow diagram, irrespective of lattice structures. The hidden Fermi surface instability provides a universal origin of noncollinear and noncoplanar instabilities common to frustrated and unfrustrated lattice systems.

Spontaneous Parity Breaking in Spin-Orbital Coupled Systems

Effects of spontaneous parity breaking by charge, spin, and orbital orders are investigated in a two-band Hubbard model on a honeycomb lattice. This is a minimal model in which the inter-orbital hopping, atomic spin-orbit coupling, and strong electron correlation give rise to fascinating properties, such as the magnetoelectric effects, quantum spin Hall effect, and spin or valley splitting in the band structure. We perform the symmetry analysis of possible broken-parity states and the mean-field analysis of their competition. We find that the model at 1/4 filling exhibits a spin-orbital composite ordered state and a charge ordered state, in addition to a paramagnetic quantum spin-Hall insulator. We show that the composite ordered phase exhibits two types of magnetoelectric responses. The charge ordered state shows spin splitting in the band structure, while the topological nature varies depending on electron correlations.

Toroidal order in metals without local inversion symmetry

Toroidal order, given by a composite of electric and magnetic orders, manifests itself not only in the peculiar magnetism but also in anomalous transport and magnetoelectric effect. We report our theoretical results on the influence and stability of a toroidal order in metals on the basis of a microscopic model. We consider an effective single-band Hubbard-type model with a site-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling, which is derived from a four-band tight-binding model including the atomic spin-orbit coupling, off-site hybridizations between orbitals with different parities, and odd-parity crystalline electric field. For this single-band model on a layered honeycomb lattice, we investigate the electronic structure, magnetotransport, and magnetoelectric effect in the toroidal ordered state with a vortex-like magnetic structure. The ferroic order of the microscopic toroidal moments acts as an effective gauge field for electrons, which modulates the electronic band structure with a shift of the band bottom in the momentum space. In addition, the site-dependent antisymmetric spin-orbit coupling gives rise to highly anisotropic Hall responses. The most salient feature is two different types of magnetoelectric responses: one is a magnetic order with net toroidal magnetization induced by an electric current perpendicular to the planes, and the other is a uniform transverse magnetization induced by an electric current within the planes. We examine the ground state of the effective model by the mean-field approximation, and show that the toroidal order is stabilized by strong electron correlations at low electron density. We also discuss the temperature dependence of the magnetoelectric effects associated with spontaneous toroidal ordering. Implications to experiments are also presented.

3D Dirac Electrons on a Cubic Lattice with Noncoplanar Multiple-Q Order

Noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures in solids manifest themselves not only in their peculiar magnetism but also in unusual electronic and transport properties. We here report our theoretical studies of a noncoplanar order on a simple cubic lattice and its influence on the electronic structure. We show that a four-sublattice triple-Q order induces three-dimensional massless Dirac electrons at commensurate electron fillings. The Dirac state is doubly degenerate, while it splits into a pair of Weyl nodes by lifting the degeneracy by an external magnetic field; the system is turned into a Weyl semimetal in applied field. In addition, we point out the triple-Q Hamiltonian in the strong coupling limit is equivalent to the 3D π-flux model relevant to an AIII topological insulator. We examine the stability of such a triple-Q order in two fundamental models for correlated electron systems: a Kondo lattice model with classical localized spins and a periodic Anderson model. For the Kondo lattice model, performing a variational calculation and Monte Carlo simulation, we show that the triple-Q order is widely stabilized around 1/4 filling. For the periodic Anderson model, we also show the stability of the same triple-Q state by using the mean-field approximation. For both models, the triple-Q order is widely stabilized via the couplings between conduction electrons and localized electrons even without any explicit competing magnetic interactions and geometrical frustration. We also show that the Dirac electrons induce peculiar surface states: Fermi "arcs" connecting the projected Dirac points, similarly to Weyl semimetals.

Charge Order with a Noncoplanar Triple-Q Magnetic Order on a Cubic Lattice

Ground state of the periodic Anderson model on a cubic lattice is investigated by mean-field calculations, with focusing on the possibility of charge ordering. We show that three different charge-ordered phases appear at 3/2 filling, which are accompanied by ferromagnetic, noncoplanar triple-Q, and ferrimagnetic order, respectively. The triple-Q magnetic order is likely stabilized by emergent geometrical frustration in the charge-ordered phase with the ordering wave vector (pi,pi,pi). We show that the nearest-neighbor hopping between localized electrons stabilizes the triple-Q phase relative to the other two phases. We also discuss the electronic structure in the triple-Q charge-ordered phase.

Partial Disorder and Metal-Insulator Transition in the Periodic Anderson Model on a Triangular Lattice

Ground state of the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice is systematically investigated by the mean-field approximation. We found that the model exhibits two different types of partially disordered states: one is at half filling and the other is at other commensurate fillings. In the latter case, the kinetic energy is lowered by forming an extensive network involving both magnetic and nonmagnetic sites, in sharp contrast to the former case in which the nonmagnetic sites are rather isolated. This spatially extended nature of nonmagnetic sites yields a metallic partially-disordered state by hole doping. We discuss the mechanism of the metal-insulator transition by the change of electronic structure.

Carrier doping to a partially disordered state in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice

We investigate the effect of hole and electron doping to half-filling in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice by the Hartree-Fock approximation at zero temperature. At half-filling, the system exhibits a partially disordered insulating state, in which a collinear antiferromagnetic order on an unfrustrated honeycomb subnetwork coexists with nonmagnetic state at the remaining sites. We find that the carrier doping destabilizes the partially disordered state, resulting in a phase separation to a doped metallic state with different magnetic order. The partially disordered state is restricted to the half-filled insulating case, while its metallic counterpart is obtained as a metastable state in a narrow electron doped region.

Partial Disorder in the Periodic Anderson Model on a Triangular Lattice

We report our theoretical results on the emergence of a partially-disordered state at zero temperature and its detailed nature in the periodic Anderson model on a triangular lattice at half filling. The partially-disordered state is characterized by coexistence of a collinear antiferromagnetic order on an unfrustrated honeycomb subnetwork and nonmagnetic state at the remaining sites. This state appears with opening a charge gap between a noncollinear antiferromagnetic metal and Kondo insulator while changing the hybridization and Coulomb repulsion. We also find a characteristic crossover in the low-energy excitation spectrum as a result of coexistence of magnetic order and nonmagnetic sites. The result demonstrates that the partially-disordered state is observed distinctly even in the absence of spin anisotropy, in marked contrast to the partial Kondo screening state found in the previous study for the Kondo lattice model.
