Electric Ferro-Axial Moment as Nanometric Rotator and Source of Longitudinal Spin Current

An electric ferro-axial moment, which is characterized by a nonzero expectation value of a time-reversal-even axial vector, exhibits distinct spatial-inversion and time-reversal properties from conventional ferroelectric, ferromagnetic, and ferro-magnetoelectric orders. Nevertheless, physical properties characteristic of the electric ferro-axial moment have been obscure owing to the absence of its conjugate electromagnetic fields. We theoretically investigate consequences of the presence of the ferro-axial moment on the basis of the symmetry and microscopic model analyses. We show that atomic-scale electric toroidal multipoles are the heart of the ferro-axial moment, which act as a nanometric rotator against external stimuli. Furthermore, we propose an intrinsic generation of a spin current parallel to an applied electric field in both metals and insulators. Our results not only provide a deep microscopic understanding of the role of the ferro-axial moment but also stimulate a new development for functional materials with use of the electric toroidal moment.

Widely-sweeping magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams for skyrmion-hosting centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets

We numerically investigate the stabilization mechanisms of skyrmion crystals under thermal fluctuations and external magnetic field in itinerant centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets. By adopting an efficient steepest descent method with a small computational cost, we systematically construct the magnetic field-temperature phase diagrams of the effective spin model derived from the itinerant electron model on a two-dimensional square lattice. As a result, we find that a square-type skyrmion crystal is stabilized by either or both of the high-harmonic wave-vector interaction and the biquadratic interaction under an external magnetic field. Especially, we discover that the former high-harmonic wave-vector interaction can stabilize the skyrmion crystal only at finite temperatures when its magnitude is small. In addition to the skyrmion crystal, we also find other stable multiple-$Q$ states in the phase diagram. Lastly, we discuss the correspondence of the phase diagrams between the effective spin model and the skyrmion-hosting material GdRu$_2$Si$_2$. The present results suggest a variety of multiple-$Q$ states could be driven by thermal fluctuations and external magnetic fields in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets.

Ferrochiral, antiferrochiral, and ferrichiral skyrmion crystals in an itinerant honeycomb magnet

Topological spin textures, such as a skyrmion crystal, are a source of unusual physical phenomena owing to the interplay between magnetism and topology. Since physical phenomena depend on the topological property and the symmetry of underlying spin structures, the search for new topological spin textures and emergent phenomena is one of the challenges in condensed matter physics. In this letter, we theoretically explore new topological spin textures arising from the synergy between spin, charge, and sublattice degrees of freedom in an itinerant magnet. By performing simulated annealing for an effective spin model of the honeycomb Kondo lattice model, we find a plethora of skyrmion crystal instabilities at low temperatures, whose topological spin textures are classified into three types: ferrochiral, antiferrochiral, and ferrichiral skyrmion crystals. We show that the obtained skyrmion crystals are the consequence of the spin-orbit-coupling-free honeycomb structure. Our results reveal the potential for itinerant honeycomb magnets to host a wide variety of SkXs and emergent phenomena.

Skyrmion and vortex crystals in the Hubbard model

A mutual interplay between the charge and spin degrees of freedom in itinerant magnets leads to a plethora of topological spin textures, such as magnetic skyrmion and vortex crystals, in both centrosymmetric and noncentrosymmetric hosts. Meanwhile, their stabilization has been extensively studied in the system including the classical localized spins. We here study a realization of the skyrmion crystal in the centrosymmetric triangular-lattice Hubbard model, where the itinerant nature of electrons plays a more significant role. By performing the self-consistent mean-field calculations, we find that two types of skyrmion crystals with spatially nonuniform charge modulations appear in the ground state at a zero magnetic field. Moreover, we obtain another noncoplanar vortex crystal phase without a net scalar chirality in the vicinity of the skyrmion crystal phase. We show that the latter vortex crystal exhibits the topological phase transition to a different skyrmion phase in an applied magnetic field. Our results provide a possibility of the skyrmion and vortex crystals in itinerant magnets without the localized moments.

Magnetic Toroidal Moment under Partial Magnetic Order in Hexagonal Zigzag-Chain Compound Ce$_3$TiBi$_5$

We theoretically investigate an antiferromagnetic structure in a hexagonal zigzag-chain compound Ce$_3$TiBi$_5$, which shows a linear magnetoelectric effect in metals and an unfamiliar temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility. We find a partial magnetic order as a coexistence of a nonmagnetic zigzag chain and staggered antiferromagnetic zigzag chains. The latter accompany in-plane magnetic toroidal dipole moments which are responsible for the observed behaviors. We show that magnetic frustration arising from competing exchange interactions plays an important role to realize such a partial magnetic order. Furthermore, we present the important spin-orbit coupling parameters to induce the physical phenomena driven by the magnetic toroidal dipole moment, such as the linear magnetoelectric effect and nonlinear transport.

Nonreciprocal Transport in Noncoplanar Magnetic Systems without Spin-Orbit Coupling, Net Scalar Chirality, or Magnetization

We propose a new mechanism of nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in magnetic systems. By considering a noncoplanar magnetic ordering on a bilayer triangular lattice, we clarify that a local scalar chirality degree of freedom is a source of nonreciprocal transport, which does not require any relativistic spin-orbit coupling, net scalar chirality, and net magnetization. We show a close relationship between the asymmetric band modulation and the nonreciprocal transport under the noncoplanar magnetic ordering based on the model-parameter dependences in the real-space picture.

Engineering a skyrmion crystal in ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic bilayers free from the DM interaction

We theoretically propose a new stabilization mechanism of a skyrmion crystal (SkX) in a bilayer triangular lattice system consisting of the ferromagnetic and the antiferromagnetic layers. By performing variational calculations and Monte Carlo simulations in a complementary way, we find that a magnetic frustration between the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic layers is a source of a finite-Q spiral state and the SkX in the strong interlayer coupling regime. We also show that the degree of frustration is related to the interlayer exchange interaction. The stronger interlayer coupling tends to make the effect of frustration larger, which results in the stabilization of the SkX. The present results not only provide a way of engineering the SkX in the ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic domain and heterostructure but also imply the possibility of the SkX based on interorbital frustration scenario.

Nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in antiferromagnets free from spin-orbit coupling

We theoretically propose a realization of a nonlinear nonreciprocal transport in antiferromagnets without relying on the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. Through the symmetry and microscopic model analyses, we show that a local spin scalar chirality to induce an asymmetric band modulation becomes a source of a Drude-type nonlinear transport, while an electric polarization induced by a collinear spin configuration in a triangle unit leads to a Berry-curvature-dipole-type nonlinear transport. We demonstrate that 120$^\circ$ antiferromagnetic ordering on a triangular lattice and a breathing kagome lattice in an external magnetic field are typical examples. Our results open a new direction of designing and engineering functional materials with showing rich parity-violating transport phenomena by spontaneous magnetic phase transitions.

Stability of Skyrmion Crystal Phase in Centrosymmetric Distorted Triangular-Lattice Antiferromagnets

The stability of a magnetic skyrmion crystal in a centrosymmetric orthorhombic lattice system is numerically investigated. By performing the simulated annealing for an effective spin model with the momentum-resolved interaction on a uniaxially distorted triangular lattice, we find that the skyrmion crystal is robustly realized when dominant interaction channels consist of the double-$Q$ structure in momentum space. Moreover, we show that an anti-type skyrmion crystal with the opposite skyrmion number is obtained by tuning the sign of the bond-dependent anisotropic exchange interaction that originates from the relativistic spin-orbit coupling.

Nonlinear spin Hall effect in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric collinear magnets

We theoretically investigate a nonlinear spin Hall effect in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric antiferromagnetic metals, which serve as an efficient spin current generator. We elucidate that an emergent spin-dependent Berry curvature dipole is a microscopic origin of the nonlinear spin Hall effect, which becomes nonzero with neither relativistic spin-orbit coupling, uniform magnetization, nor spin-split band structure. By analyzing a microscopic antiferromagnetic model without spin-orbit coupling for an intuitive understanding of the phenomena, we elucidate essential hopping processes and a condition to enhance the nonlinear spin Hall conductivity. We also provide a complete table to include useful correspondence among the Néel vector, odd-parity multipoles, nonlinear spin conductivity tensor, and candidate materials in all the $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric black-and-white magnetic point groups.

Square skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric systems with locally inversion-asymmetric layers

We investigate an instability toward a square-lattice formation of magnetic skyrmions in centrosymmetric layered systems. By focusing on a bilayer square-lattice structure with the inversion center at the interlayer bond instead of the atomic site, we numerically examine the stability of the square skyrmion crystal based on an effective spin model with the momentum-resolved interaction in the ground state through the simulated annealing. As a result, we find that a layer-dependent staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction built in the lattice structure becomes the origin of the square skyrmion crystal in an external magnetic field irrespective of the sign of the interlayer exchange interaction. The obtained square skyrmion crystal is constituted of the skyrmion crystals with different helicities in each layer due to the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Furthermore, we show that the interplay between the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the interlayer exchange interaction gives rise to a double-$Q$ state with a uniform component of the scalar chirality in the low-field region. The present results provide another way of stabilizing the square skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets, which will be useful to explore further exotic topological spin textures.

Skyrmion crystal under $D_{3h}$ point group: Role of out-of-plane Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

The Dzyaloshinkii-Moriya (DM) interaction that originates from relativistic spin-orbit coupling in noncentrosymmetric magnets is a source of topological spin textures. We theoretically investigate the possibility of a skyrmion crystal by focusing on the role of the out-of-plane DM interaction that is different from the polar- and chiral-type DM interaction. By performing the simulated annealing for a spin model on a triangular lattice belonging to the $D_{3h}$ point group, we construct low-temperature magnetic phase diagrams in an applied magnetic field. As a result, we find the instability toward different skyrmion crystals under in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic fields, where the key ingredients to stabilize the SkX are different according to the magnetic field direction; the SkX is stabilized under the out-of-plane DM interaction for the in-plane magnetic field, while it is stabilized by additionally introducing an easy-axis anisotropy for the out-of-plane magnetic field. We also discuss the possible multiple-$Q$ states other than the skyrmion crystals in the presence of the out-of-plane DM interaction. Our result indicates that noncentrosymmetric magnetic materials with the out-of-plane DM interaction are potential candidates to host the skyrmion crystals.

Skyrmion crystal with integer and fractional skyrmion numbers in a nonsymmorphic lattice structure with the screw axis

The emergence of a magnetic skyrmion crystal in a nonsymmorphic lattice system with the screw symmetry is numerically investigated. By performing the simulated annealing for a layered spin model with the isotropic exchange interaction and the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, and then constructing a low-temperature phase diagram, we reveal that the skyrmion crystal is stabilized in both zero and nonzero fields even without the threefold rotational symmetry in the two-dimensional plane. We show that a competition between the ferromagnetic interlayer exchange interaction and the layer- and momentum-dependent anisotropic interactions is a source of the skyrmion crystals in the presence of the screw axis. Moreover, we find two types of layer-dependent skyrmion crystals, which are characterized as a coexisting state of the skyrmion crystal and the spiral state, in the narrow field region. Our result provides a reference for further search of the skyrmion crystals in nonsymmorphic lattice systems.

Magnetic Hedgehog Lattice in a Centrosymmetric Cubic Metal

The hedgehog lattice (HL) is a three-dimensional topological spin texture hosting a periodic array of magnetic monopoles and antimonopoles. It has been studied theoretically for noncentrosymmetric systems with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, but the stability, as well as the magnetic and topological properties, remains elusive in the centrosymmetric case. We here investigate the ground state of an effective spin model with long-range bilinear and biquadratic interactions for a centrosymmetric cubic metal by simulated annealing. We show that our model stabilizes a HL composed of two pairs of left- and right-handed helices, resulting in no net scalar spin chirality, in stark contrast to the noncentrosymmetric case. We find that the HL turns into topologically-trivial conical states in an applied magnetic field. From the detailed analyses of the constituent spin helices, we clarify that the ellipticity and angles of the helical planes change gradually while increasing the magnetic field. We discuss the results in comparison with the experiments for a centrosymmetric cubic metal SrFeO$_3$.

Rectangular and square skyrmion crystals on a centrosymmetric square lattice with easy-axis anisotropy

We report our theoretical results on the emergence of rectangular- and square-shaped magnetic skyrmion crystals on a centrosymmetric square lattice with magnetic anisotropy. By performing the simulated annealing for a frustrated spin model with an easy-axis single-ion anisotropy on a square lattice, we find that a competition of the interactions in momentum space gives rise to the formation of two skyrmion crystals, where the skyrmion cores are aligned in a rectangle- or square-lattice way. Especially, the interactions at the higher harmonic wave vectors play an important role in stabilizing the square/rectangular skyrmion crystals. Our results provide a reference to explore further skyrmion-hosting materials in centrosymmetric tetragonal systems.

Multifarious skyrmion phases on a trilayer triangular lattice

The instability toward a magnetic skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric trilayer magnets is investigated based on a spin model with layer-dependent Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction. We find various types of skyrmion crystal phases with different skyrmion numbers in a low-temperature phase diagram by performing the simulated annealing. In addition to the Néel skyrmion crystal phase that is expected to emerge in the presence of the polar-type Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction, we obtain the skyrmion crystal phases characteristics of the layered system: the twisted surface skyrmion crystal, anti-skyrmion crystal, and high-topological-number skyrmion crystal phases. The rich magnetic phases are brought about by the synergy among the layer-dependent Dzayloshinskii-Moriya interaction, interlayer exchange interaction, and an external magnetic field. Our results indicate that the layer degree of freedom at the surface and heterostructures provides a good platform to engineer and design the topological spin textures.

Analysis of model parameter dependences on the second-order nonlinear conductivity in $\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric collinear antiferromagnetic metals with magnetic toroidal moment on zigzag chains

A magnetic toroidal moment is a fundamental electronic degree of freedom in the absence of both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries and gives rise to novel multiferroic and transport properties. We elucidate essential model parameters of the nonlinear transport in the space-time ($\mathcal{PT}$) symmetric collinear antiferromagnetic metals accompanying a magnetic toroidal moment. By analyzing the longitudinal and transverse components of the second-order nonlinear conductivity on a two-dimensionally stacked zigzag chain based on the nonlinear Kubo formula, we show that an effective coupling between the magnetic toroidal moment and the antisymmetric spin-orbit interaction is an essential source of the nonlinear conductivity. Moreover, we find that the nonreciprocal longitudinal current and nonlinear transverse current in a multi-band system are largely enhanced just below the transition temperature of the antiferromagnetic ordering. We also discuss the relevance of the nonlinear conductivity to the linear magnetoelectric coefficient and conductivity. Our result serves as a guide for exploring microscopic essence and clarifying the parameter dependence of the nonlinear conductive phenomena in ferrotoroidal metals.

Spin Conductivity Based on Magnetic Toroidal Quadrupole Hidden in Antiferromagnets

We report our theoretical results on spin conductivity in antiferromagnets by focusing on the role of the magnetic toroidal quadrupole (MTQ) in electron systems. The MTQ is characterized as a time-reversal-odd rank-2 polar tensor degree of freedom in electrons, which is distinct from conventional rank-1 magnetic and magnetic toroidal dipoles. Based on a microscopic $sd$ model analysis for a tetragonal system under both collinear and noncollinear antiferromagnetic orderings, we clarify that the MTQ becomes a source of an extrinsic spin conductivity even with neither a uniform magnetization nor spin-orbit coupling. We also list all the magnetic point groups to accommodate the MTQs as a primary order parameter as well as the candidate antiferromagnetic materials.
