Helicity locking of square skyrmion crystal in a centrosymmetric lattice system without vertical mirror symmetry

We theoretically investigate the stability of a square skyrmion crystal (SkX) in a centrosymmetric tetragonal lattice structure with the emphasis on the role of the magnetic anisotropy arising from the absence of vertical mirror symmetry. Our analysis is based on an effective bilinear and biquadratic model in momentum space, which is a canonical model for itinerant magnets in a weak-coupling regime. By performing the simulated annealing for the model on the two-dimensional square lattice, we find that the off-diagonal spin component in the interaction, which becomes nonzero when the vertical mirror symmetry is broken, gives rise to the square SkX with a definite helicity in an external magnetic field. We show that the helicity of the centrosymmetric SkXs is determined by the competition between the off-diagonal and diagonal anisotropic interactions, the latter of which appears in the discrete fourfold-rotational lattice structure. Furthermore, we discuss helicity-dependent physical phenomena by introducing odd-parity multipoles, where electric (magnetic) and electric (magnetic) toroidal multipoles are sources of an antisymmetric spin polarization and an Edelstein effect (a magnetoelectric effect). We also discuss the stability of the SkXs with different helicities in a magnetic field rotation. Our results provide a way of engineering the helicity-locked SkXs by the symmetric anisotropic interaction in centrosymmetric magnets, which is distinct from that by the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric magnets.

Skyrmion crystals in centrosymmetric triangular magnets under hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy

We theoretically report an instability toward a skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets under hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy. The results are obtained for a minimal spin model with a crystal-dependent single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by performing simulated annealing. By constructing magnetic phase diagrams in the presence of six different types of single-ion anisotropy while changing the amplitudes of external magnetic field and single-ion anisotropy in a systematic way, we find that the hexagonal and trigonal single-ion anisotropy becomes a source of the skyrmion crystal depending on the magnetic-field direction. We show that the skyrmion crystal is stabilized by the uniaxial-type or trigonal-type single-ion anisotropy under the out-of-plane magnetic field, while it is stabilized by the hexagonal-type inplane single-ion anisotropy under the inplane magnetic field. We also find various multiple-$Q$ spin states depending on the types of the single-ion anisotropy.

Effective spin model in momentum space: Toward a systematic understanding of multiple-$Q$ instability by momentum-resolved anisotropic exchange interactions

Multiple-$Q$ magnetic states, such as a skyrmion crystal, become a source of unusual transport phenomena and dynamics. Recent theoretical and experimental studies clarify that such multiple-$Q$ states ubiquitously appear under different crystal structures in metals and insulators. Toward a systematic understanding of the formation of the multiple-$Q$ states in various crystal systems, in this theoretical study, we present a low-energy effective spin model with anisotropic exchange interactions in momentum space. We summarize specific six symmetry rules for nonzero symmetric and antisymmetric anisotropic exchange interactions in momentum space, which are regarded as an extension of Moriya's rule. According to the rules, we construct the effective spin model for tetragonal, hexagonal, and trigonal magnets with crystal- and momentum-dependent anisotropic exchange interactions based on magnetic representation analysis. Furthermore, we describe the origin of the effective anisotropic exchange interactions in itinerant magnets by perturbatively analyzing a multi-band periodic Anderson model with the spin-orbit coupling. We apply the effective spin model to an itinerant magnet in a $P6/mmm$ crystal and find various multiple-$Q$ states with a spin scalar chirality in the ground state. Our results provide a foundation of constructing effective phenomenological spin models for any crystal systems hosting the multiple-$Q$ states, which will stimulate further exploration of exotic multiple-$Q$ states in materials with the spin-orbit coupling.

Multiple skyrmion crystal phases by itinerant frustration in centrosymmetric tetragonal magnets

A skyrmion crystal (SkX) expressed as a multiple number of spiral modulations manifests itself not only in its peculiar magnetic texture but also in nontrivial transport properties originating from an emergent magnetic field. We here report our numerical results for multiple SkXs in a centrosymmetric tetragonal crystal system. By performing simulated annealing for an effective spin model for itinerant magnets, we find that three types of the SkXs with the skyrmion numbers of one and two, which are characterized by different superpositions of helices, are stabilized in the ground state, and are transformed by an external magnetic field. The essence of the emergent multiple SkXs is lied in itinerant frustration where exchange interactions are competed in momentum space due to the nature of itinerant electrons.

Mechanism of antisymmetric spin polarization in centrosymmetric multiple-$Q$ magnets based on bilinear and biquadratic spin cross products

We investigate how to engineer an antisymmetric spin-split band structure under spin density waves with finite ordering wave vectors in centrosymmetric systems without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. On the basis of a perturbative analysis for the spin-charge coupled model in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, we show that nonzero chiral-type bilinear and biquadratic spin cross products in momentum space under the magnetic orderings are related to an antisymmetric spin polarization in the electronic band structure. We apply the derived formula to the single-$Q$ cycloidal spiral and double-$Q$ noncoplanar states including the meron-antimeron and skyrmion crystals. Our results present a clue to realize a giant antisymmetric spin splitting driven by magnetic phase transitions in the centrosymmetric lattice structures without the spin-orbit coupling.

Essential model parameters for nonreciprocal magnons in multisublattice systems

We theoretically investigate the microscopic conditions for emergent nonreciprocal magnons toward unified understanding on the basis of a microscopic model analysis. We show that the products of the Bogoliubov Hamiltonian obtained within the linear spin wave approximation is enough to obtain the momentum-space functional form and the key ingredients in the nonreciprocal magnon dispersions in an analytical way even without solving the eigenvalue problems. We find that the odd order of an effective antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and/or the even order of an effective symmetric anisotropic interaction in the spin rotated frame can be a source of the antisymmetric dispersions. We present possible kinetic paths of magnons contributing to the antisymmetric dispersions in the one- to four-sublattice systems with the general exchange interactions. We also test the formula for both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orderings in the absence of spatial inversion symmetry.

Skyrmion crystal and spiral phases in centrosymmetric bilayer magnets with staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

We theoretically study a stabilization mechanism of the skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric magnets with a bilayer structure. We show that the interplay between a layer-dependent staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction that arises from the absence of local inversion symmetry and the interlayer exchange interaction gives rise to a plethora of multiple-$Q$ states including the skyrmion crystal with a quantized topological number. By performing the simulated annealing for the bilayer triangular-lattice model under an external magnetic field, we demonstrate that the skyrmion forms the triangular-shaped crystals with different helicities in each layer owing to the staggered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. Although the relative positions of the skyrmion core in each layer are different depending on the sign of the interlayer exchange interactions, the skyrmion crystal phases robustly appear under both ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interlayer interactions. We also find another two triple-$Q$ states with a uniform scalar chirality but without a quantized topological number in the low- and high-field regions. Especially, the low-field triple-$Q$ state exhibits the opposite sign of the scalar chirality to the skyrmion crystal, which are not found in the single-layer system. Our results indicate that the lack of local inversion symmetry in the lattice structure is another key ingredient to induce topological spin textures in centrosymmetric magnets.

Antisymmetric Thermopolarization by Electric Toroidicity

We investigate electric polarizations emergent perpendicular to an applied thermal gradient in insulating systems. The thermally-induced electric polarization, known as thermopolarization, has been studied conventionally in the case that an electric polarization appears along the thermal gradient. Here, we focus on the antisymmetric component of the thermopolarization tensor and reveal that it becomes nonzero owing to the ferro-type order for electric-toroidal dipole moments. To describe local electric polarizations originating from the disproportionation of localized electronic clouds, we introduce a two-dimensional three-orbital model with localized $s$ and two $p$ orbitals, where the electric polarization at each site interacts with the neighboring one as dipole-dipole interactions. We find that a vortex-type configuration of local electric polarizations appears as a mean-field ground state, corresponding to a ferro-type electric-toroidal dipole order. By taking account of collective modes from this ordered state, we calculate the coefficient of the thermopolarization based on the linear response theory. The antisymmetric component is nonzero in the presence of the electric-toroidal dipole order. We clarify that fluctuations in the $p$ orbitals are crucial in enhancing the antisymmetric thermopolarization. We discuss the appearance conditions based on the symmetry argument and the relevance to real materials.

Spin excitation spectra in helimagnetic states: proper-screw, cycloid, vortex crystal, and hedgehog lattice

We investigate the spin excitation spectra in chiral and polar magnets by the linear spin-wave theory for an effective spin model with symmetric and antisymmetric long-range interactions. In one dimension, we obtain the analytic form of the dynamical spin structure factor for proper-screw and cycloidal helical spin states with uniform twists, which shows a gapless mode with strong intensity at the helical wave number. When introducing spin anisotropy in the symmetric interactions, we numerically show that the stable spin spirals become elliptically anisotropic with nonuniform twists and the spin excitation is gapped. In higher dimensions, we find that similar anisotropy stabilizes multiple-$Q$ spin states, such as vortex crystals and hedgehog lattices. We show that the anisotropy in these states manifests itself in the dynamical spin structure factor: a strong intensity in the transverse components to the wave number appears only when the helical wave vector and the corresponding easy axis are perpendicular to each other. Our findings could be useful not only to identify the spin structure but also to deduce the stabilization mechanism by inelastic neutron scattering measurements.

Locking of skyrmion cores on a centrosymmetric discrete lattice: onsite versus offsite

A magnetic skyrmion crystal (SkX) with a swirling spin configuration, which is one of topological spin crystals as a consequence of an interference between multiple spin density waves, shows a variety of noncoplanar spin patterns depending on a way of superposing the waves. By focusing on a phase degree of freedom among the constituent waves in the SkX, we theoretically investigate a position of the skyrmion core on a discrete lattice, which is relevant with the symmetry of the SkX. The results are obtained for the double exchange (classical Kondo lattice) model on a discrete triangular lattice by the variational calculations. We find that the skyrmion cores in both two SkXs with the skyrmion number of one and two are locked at the interstitial site on the triangular lattice, while it is located at the onsite by introducing a relatively large easy-axis single-ion anisotropy. The variational parameters and the resultant Fermi surfaces in each SkX spin texture are also discussed. The different symmetry of the Fermi surfaces depending on the core position is obtained when the skyrmion crystal is commensurate with the lattice. The different Fermi-surface topology is directly distinguished by an electric probe of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Furthermore, we show that the SkXs obtained by the variational calculations are also confirmed by numerical simulations on the basis of the kernel polynomial method and the Langevin dynamics for the double exchange model and the simulated annealing for an effective spin model.

Temperature-driven transition from skyrmion to bubble crystals in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets

Interplay between itinerant electrons and localized spins in itinerant magnets gives rise to a variety of noncoplanar multiple-$Q$ spin textures, such as the skyrmion, hedgehog, meron, and vortex. We elucidate that another type of multiple-$Q$ state consisting of collinear sinusoidal waves, a magnetic bubble crystal, appears at finite temperatures in a centrosymmetric itinerant electron system. The results are obtained for the classical Kondo lattice model with easy-axis single-ion anisotropy on a triangular lattice by a large-scale numerical simulation. We find that a finite-temperature topological phase transition between the skyrmion crystal and the bubble crystal occurs by changing the temperature. We obtain the minimal key ingredients for inducing the finite-temperature transition by analyzing an effective spin model where it is shown that the synergy between the multiple-spin interaction and magnetic anisotropy plays a significant role.

Charge density waves in multiple-$Q$ spin states

Coupling between spin and charge degrees of freedom in electrons is a source of various electronic and magnetic properties of solids. We theoretically study charge density waves induced by the spin-charge coupling in the presence of magnetic orderings in itinerant magnets. By performing a perturbative calculation in the weak-coupling limit of the Kondo lattice model, we derive a useful formula for the relationship between charge and spin density waves, which can be applied to any magnetic orderings, including noncollinear and noncoplanar ones composed of multiple spin density waves called multiple-$Q$ magnetic orderings. We demonstrate the predictive power for single-$Q$ and double-$Q$ states including skyrmion and meron-antimeron crystals on a square lattice, in comparison with the numerical calculations. Moreover, we show that the charge density waves contain richer information than the spin density waves, and are indeed useful in distinguishing the spin textures with similar spin structure factors. We discuss the relation to bond modulation in terms of the kinetic bond energy and the vector spin chirality. We also perform numerical calculations beyond the perturbative regime and find that the charge density waves can be enhanced when the electron filling is commensurate. Furthermore, we investigate the effect of the spin-orbit coupling, which can lead to additional charge density waves owing to effective anisotropic magnetic interactions in momentum space. Our result will provide a way to identify complex magnetic orderings and their origins from the charge modulations.

Multipole classification in 122 magnetic point groups for unified understanding of multiferroic responses and transport phenomena

Mutual interplay between the electronic degrees of freedom in solids, such as charge, spin, orbital, sublattice, and bond degrees of freedom, is a source of cross-correlated phenomena with unconventional electronic ordered states. Such degrees of freedom can be described by four types of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) in a unified way, which enable us to tightly connect the microscopic degrees of freedom with macroscopic physical responses in a transparent manner. We complete a classification of the multipoles in all 122 magnetic point groups based on the group theory. The classification is useful to identify potentially active multipoles not only in ordinary ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic orderings but also in exotic orderings breaking time-reversal symmetry, e.g., a loop-current state. Moreover, the classification gives an insight into the microscopic origin of the cross-correlated responses and quantum transports. By analyzing response functions up to the second order, we summarize the indispensable multipole moments for various responses, such as the linear magnetoelectric, piezoelectric, and elastic responses, and the nonlinear conductivity and Nernst coefficient. Our results highly promote a further discovery of functional multiferroic materials, guided by the bottom-up material design based on the symmetry-adapted multipoles.

Nonreciprocal magnon excitations by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction on the basis of bond magnetic toroidal multipoles

The microscopic conditions for the emergence of nonreciprocal magnon excitations in noncentrosymmetric magnets are theoretically investigated. We show that asymmetric magnon excitations appear when a bond magnetic toroidal dipole becomes active, which is defined as a parallel component between the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya vector and the averaged spin moments at the ends of the bonds. Depending on magnetic structures accompanying the bond magnetic toroidal dipoles, the higher-rank magnetic toroidal multipoles can also be activated in a magnetic cluster, which describes various angle dependences of asymmetric magnon excitations. We demonstrate a variety of asymmetric magnon excitations for two magnetic systems in the noncentrosymmetric lattice structures; a one-dimensional breathing chain under a uniform crystalline electric field and a three-dimensional layered breathing kagome structure. We show that a bottom shift of magnon bands occurs by the magnetic toroidal dipole and a valley splitting occurs by the magnetic toroidal octupole under magnetic orderings.

Meron-antimeron crystals in noncentrosymmetric itinerant magnets on a triangular lattice

Multiple-$Q$ magnetic states often induce nontrivial topological spin textures, such as a skyrmion and a hedgehog. We theoretically investigate yet another multiple-$Q$ state with topological defects, a meron-antimeron crystal (MAX), represented by a periodic array of the meron and antimeron with a half-integer skyrmion number. Performing simulated annealing for an effective spin model of noncentrosymmetric itinerant magnets on a triangular lattice, we show that rectangular-shaped and triangular-shaped MAXs are stabilized by the interplay between the biquadratic interaction arising from the spin-charge coupling and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction arising from the spin-orbit coupling. We also discuss the effect of a magnetic field on the triangular MAX, where highly anisotropic responses against a field direction are found. In particular, we show that the triangular MAX turns into the skyrmion crystal for the fields along the $y$ and $z$ directions, while it is replaced by another chiral state for the field along the $x$ direction. These results would inspire further experimental investigation of the MAXs in itinerant magnets.

Field-Direction Sensitive Skyrmion Crystals in Cubic Chiral Systems: Implication to $4f$-Electron Compound EuPtSi

We theoretically study the stability of magnetic skyrmion crystals (SkXs) in chiral cubic antiferromagnets with the EuPtSi hosting unconventional nanometric SkXs in mind. By performing numerical simulations for a minimal effective spin model with the long-range Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction and the multiple-spin interaction arising from itinerant nature of electrons, we clarify two key ingredients for the emergence of the SkXs in EuPtSi: One is the low-symmetric ordering vectors that lead to the field-direction sensitive SkXs in an external magnetic field, while the other is the synergy between spin-charge and spin-orbit couplings in itinerant magnets that results in the nanometric SkXs. The present study will not only provide the microscopic mechanism of the SkXs in EuPtSi but also guide for a search of further materials hosting short-period SkXs.

Essential role of anisotropic magnetic dipole in anomalous Hall effect

We theoretically investigate the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) that requires neither a net magnetization nor an external magnetic field in collinear antiferromagnets. We show that such an emergent AHE is essentially caused by a ferroic ordering of the anisotropic magnetic dipole (AMD), which provides an effective coupling between ordered magnetic moments and electronic motion in the crystal. We demonstrate that the AMD is naturally induced by the antiferromagnetic ordering, in which the magnetic moments have a quadrupole spatial distribution. In view of the ferroic AMD ordering, we analyze the behavior of the AHE in the orthorhombic lattice system, where the AHE is largely enhanced by the large coupling between the AMD and the spin-orbit interaction. From these findings, the AMD can be used as a descriptor in general to investigate the ferromagnetic-related physical quantities in antiferromagnets including noncollinear ones, which is detectable by using the x-ray magneto-circular dichroism.

Spin-orbital-momentum locking under odd-parity magnetic quadrupole ordering

Odd-parity magnetic and magnetic toroidal multipoles in the absence of both spatial-inversion and time-reversal symmetries are sources of multiferroic and nonreciprocal optical phenomena. We investigate electronic states caused by an emergent odd-parity magnetic quadrupole (MQ) as a representative example of magnetic odd-parity multipoles. It is shown that spontaneous ordering of the MQ leads to an antisymmetric spin-orbital polarization in momentum space, which corresponds to a spin-orbital momentum locking at each wave vector. By symmetry argument, we show that the orbital or sublattice degree of freedom is indispensable to give rise to the spin-orbital momentum locking. We demonstrate how the electronic band structures are modulated by the MQ ordering in the three-orbital system, in which the MQ is activated by the spin-dependent hybridization between the orbitals with different spatial parities. The spin-orbital momentum locking is related with the microscopic origin of cross-correlated phenomena, e.g., the magnetic-field-induced symmetric and antisymmetric spin polarization in the band structure, the current-induced distortion, and the magnetoelectric effect. We also discuss similar spin-orbital momentum locking in antiferromagnet where the MQ degree of freedom is activated through the antiferromagnetic spin structure in a sublattice system.
