Topological spin crystals by itinerant frustration

Spin textures with nontrivial topology, such as vortices and skyrmions, have attracted attention as a source of unconventional magnetic, transport, and optical phenomena. Recently, a new generation of topological spin textures has been extensively studied in itinerant magnets; in contrast to the conventional ones induced, e.g., by the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in noncentrosymmetric systems, they are characterized by extremely short magnetic periods and stable even in centrosymmetric systems. Here we review such new types of topological spin textures with particular emphasis on their stabilization mechanism. Focusing on the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom in itinerant electron systems, we show that itinerant frustration, which is the competition among electron-mediated interactions, plays a central role in stabilizing a variety of topological spin crystals including a skyrmion crystal with unconventional high skyrmion number, meron crystals, and hedgehog crystals. We also show that the essential ingredients in the itinerant frustration are represented by bilinear and biquadratic spin interactions in momentum space. This perspective not only provides a unified understanding of the unconventional topological spin crystals but also stimulates further exploration of exotic topological phenomena in itinerant magnets.

Noncoplanar multiple-$Q$ spin textures by itinerant frustration: Effects of single-ion anisotropy and bond-dependent anisotropy

We theoretically investigate multiple-$Q$ spin textures, which are composed of superpositions of spin density waves with different wave numbers, for an effective spin model of centrosymmetric itinerant magnets. Our focus is on the interplay between biquadratic interactions arising from the spin-charge coupling and magnetic anisotropy caused by the spin-orbit coupling. Taking into account two types of the magnetic anisotropy, single-ion anisotropy and bond-dependent anisotropy, we elucidate magnetic phase diagrams for an archetypal triangular-lattice system in the absence and presence of an external magnetic field. In the case of the single-ion anisotropy, we find a plethora of multiple-$Q$ instabilities depending on the strength and the sign of the anisotropy (easy plane or easy axis), including a skyrmion crystal with topological number of two. In an external magnetic field, we find that a skyrmion crystal with topological number of one is stabilized by the in-plane (out-of-plane) magnetic field under the easy-plane (easy-axis) anisotropy. We also examine the stability of the field-induced skyrmion crystal by rotating the field direction. As a biproduct, we show that a triple-$Q$ state with nonzero chirality appears in the presence of the biquadratic interaction and the easy-axis anisotropy. Meanwhile, we find that the bond-dependent anisotropy also stabilizes both types of skyrmion crystals. We show that, however, for the skyrmion crystal with topological number of one, Bloch- and Néel-type skyrmion crystals are selectively realized depending on the sign of the bond-dependent anisotropy. Moreover, we find yet another multiple-$Q$ states, including two types of meron crystals with the skyrmion numbers of one and two. The systematic investigation will provide a reference to complex magnetic textures in centrosymmetric magnetic metals.

NQR and NMR spectra in odd-parity multipole material CeCoSi

We theoretically study NQR and NMR spectra in the presence of odd-parity multipoles originating from staggered antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupole orderings. For the $f$-electron metal, CeCoSi, which is a candidate hosting odd-parity multipoles, we derive an effective hyperfine field acting on Co nucleus generated from electronic origin multipole moments at Ce ion under zero and nonzero magnetic fields. We elucidate that emergent odd-parity multipoles give rise to sublattice-dependent spectral splittings in NQR and NMR through the effective hyperfine coupling in the absence of the global inversion symmetry. We mainly examine behaviors of the NQR and NMR spectra in three odd-parity multipole ordered states: a $y$-type magnetic toroidal dipole order with a staggered $x$-type antiferromagnetic structure, an $xy$-type electric toroidal quadrupole order with a staggered $x^2-y^2$-type antiferroquadrupole structure, and a $z$-type electric dipole order with a staggered $3z^2-r^2$-type antiferroquadrupole structure. We show that different odd-parity multipole orders lead to different field-dependent spectral splittings in NMR, while only the $xy$-type electric toroidal quadrupole order exhibits the NQR spectral splitting. We also present possible sublattice-dependent spectral splittings for all the odd-parity multipole orders potentially activated in low-energy crystal-field levels, which will be useful to identify odd-parity order parameters in CeCoSi by NQR and NMR measurements.

Imaging the coupling between itinerant electrons and localised moments in the centrosymmetric skyrmion magnet GdRu2Si2

Magnetic skyrmions were thought to be stabilised only in inversion-symmetry breaking structures, but skyrmion lattices were recently discovered in inversion symmetric Gd-based compounds, spurring questions of the stabilisationmechanism. A natural consequence of a recent theoretical proposal, a coupling between itinerant electrons and localised magnetic moments, is that the skyrmions are amenable to detection using even non-magnetic probes such as spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnellingmicroscopy (SI-STM). Here SI-STM observations of GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ reveal patterns in the local density of states that indeed vary with the underlying magnetic structures. These patterns are qualitatively reproduced by model calculations which assume exchange coupling between itinerant electrons and localised moments. These findings provide a clue to understand the skyrmion formation mechanism in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$.

Bottom-up design of spin-split and reshaped electronic band structures in spin-orbit-coupling free antiferromagnets: Procedure on the basis of augmented multipoles

We propose an efficient microscopic design procedure of electronic band structures having intrinsic spin and momentum dependences in spin-orbit-coupling free antiferromagnets. Our bottom-up design approach to creating desired spin-split and reshaped band structures could result in further findings of practical spin-orbit-coupling free materials exhibiting a giant spin-dependent and/or nonreciprocal transport, magneto-electric and elastic responses as a consequence of such band structures. We establish a systematic guideline to construct symmetric/antisymmetric spin-split and antisymmetrically deformed spin-independent band structures in spin-orbit-coupling free systems by using two polar multipole degrees of freedom, electric and magnetic toroidal multipoles. The two polar multipoles describe arbitrary degrees of freedom in the hopping Hamiltonian, whose onsite and offsite degrees of freedom in a cluster are described as the cluster and bond multipoles, respectively, and another degree of freedom connecting between clusters is expressed as momentum multipoles. By using these multipole descriptions, we elucidate simple microscopic conditions to realize intrinsic band deformations in magnetically ordered states: The symmetric spin splitting is realized in collinear magnets when cluster and bond multipoles contain the same symmetry of multipoles. The antisymmetric spin splitting occurs in noncollinear antiferromagnets when a bond-type magnetic toroidal multipole is present. Furthermore, the antisymmetric band deformation with spin degeneracy is realized in noncoplanar antiferromagnets. We exemplify three lattice systems in order to demonstrate the band deformations under the magnetic ordering. On the basis of the proposed procedure, we list up various candidate materials showing intrinsic band deformations in accordance with MAGNDATA, magnetic structures database.

Square skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets

We theoretically investigate the origin of the square-type skyrmion crystal in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets, motivated from the recent experimental finding in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ [N. D. Khanh $\mathit{et}$ $\mathit{al.}$, Nat. Nanotech. $\mathbf{15}$, 444 (2020)]. By simulated annealing for an effective spin model derived from the Kondo lattice model on a square lattice, we find that a square skyrmion crystal composed of a superposition of two spin helices is stabilized in a magnetic field by synergy between the positive biquadratic, bond-dependent anisotropic, and easy-axis anisotropic interactions. This is in stark contrast to triangular skyrmion crystals which are stabilized by only one of the three, suggesting that the square skyrmion crystal is characteristic of itinerant magnets with magnetic anisotropy. We also show that a variety of noncollinear and noncoplanar spin textures appear depending on the model parameters as well as the applied magnetic field. The present systematic study will be useful not only for identifying the key ingredients in GdRu$_2$Si$_2$ but also for exploring further skyrmion-hosting materials in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets.

Degeneracy Lifting of Néel, Bloch, and Anti-Skyrmion Crystals in Centrosymmetric Tetragonal Systems

A skyrmion crystal has internal degrees of freedom in terms of vorticity and helicity, which gives rise to fascinating types of skyrmion phases (Néel, Bloch, and anti-skyrmion). We show how the degeneracy lifting in tetragonal skyrmion crystals occurs in centrosymmetric itinerant magnets by focusing on microscopic interactions through the Fermi surface instability. We demonstrate that four types of skyrmion crystals can be realized according to the signs of the anisotropic Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida interaction, which are sensitive to band structures, electron fillings, atomic orbitals, and sublattice positions. Our findings might provide a possibility of controlling the types of the skyrmion crystals by electron doping and external pressure rather than relying on the noncentrosymmetric lattice structures.

Complete Multipole Basis Set for Single-Centered Electron Systems

A whole series of expressions for four species of multipoles (electric, magnetic, magnetic toroidal, and electric toroidal) is provided as a complete basis set to describe arbitrary single-centered spinful electron systems. A compact formula to calculate matrix elements of these multipoles is also derived. A visualization method of an electronic state characterized in terms of multipoles is proposed. The complete basis set is useful to narrow down a candidate order parameter of electron systems in phase transition, to describe a property of cross-correlated phenomena, to analyze spectra of x-ray scattering in magnetically ordered state, and so on. We demonstrate a usage of the complete basis set by taking monopole and toroidal dipole orderings, and the mutual relationship among three distinct magnetic dipoles (orbital, spin angular momenta and anisotropic dipole) in a spin-orbit coupled system as prime examples.

Nonreciprocal Magnon by Symmetric Anisotropic Exchange Interaction in Honeycomb Antiferromagnet

We investigate a microscopic origin of nonreciprocal magnon that is distinct from the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction in a honeycomb antiferromagnet. The key ingredient is a symmetric anisotropic exchange interaction depending on the bond direction, which results in a valley-type nonreciprocal magnon excitations under the staggered antiferromagnetic ordering. Furthermore, we find this type of nonreciprocal magnon exhibits a peculiar magnetic-field response; the nonreciprocal direction can be manipulated by the in-plane rotating magnetic field. The obtained results can be accounted for the emergence of the magnetic toroidal multipoles.

Spontaneous Antisymmetric Spin Splitting in Noncollinear Antiferromagnets without Spin-Orbit Coupling

We propose a realization of an antisymmetric spin-split band structure through magnetic phase transitions without spin-orbit coupling. It enables us to utilize for a variety of magnetic-order-driven cross-correlated and nonreciprocal transport phenomena as similar to those in the spin-orbit-coupling oriented systems. We unveil its general condition as an emergence of a bond-type magnetic toroidal multipole (polar tensor) in the triangular unit with the noncollinear 120$^{\circ}$-AFM structures. By using the concept of augmented multipoles, we systematically analyze the phenomena in terms of an effective multipole coupling. Our multipole description is ubiquitously applied to any trigonal and hexagonal structures including the triangular, kagome, and breathing kagome structures, which provides how to design and engineer materials with a giant antisymmetric spin splitting and its physical responses even without the spin-orbit coupling.

Phase Shift in Skyrmion Crystals

The skyrmion crystal is a periodic array of a swirling topological spin texture. Since it is regarded as an interference pattern by multiple helical spin density waves, the texture changes with the relative phases among the constituent waves. Although the phase degree of freedom is relevant to not only magnetism but also transport properties, its effect has not been elucidated thus far. We here theoretically show that a phase shift can occur in the skyrmion crystals to stabilize tetra-axial vortex crystals with staggered scalar spin chirality. This leads to spontaneous breaking of the lattice symmetry, which results in nonreciprocal transport phenomena even without the relativistic spin-orbit coupling. We show that such a phase shift is driven by long-range chirality interactions or thermal fluctuations in spin-charge coupled systems.

Tracing Monopoles and Anti-monopoles in a Magnetic Hedgehog Lattice

The magnetic hedgehog lattice (HL), which was recently discovered in the $B$20-type chiral magnet MnSi$_{1-x}$Ge$_x$, is a topological spin texture with a periodic array of magnetic monopoles and anti-monopoles. Within the continuum approximation, the monopoles and anti-monopoles are predicted to move, collide, and pair annihilate in an applied magnetic field, but it remains unclear how the lattice discretization affects their motions. Here, we study the trajectories of monopoles and anti-monopoles in a lattice system by simulated annealing with field sweep. We show that the monopoles and anti-monopoles move and repel before pair annihilations. We also clarify that their motions are closely related with the field dependence of the scalar spin chirality.

Anomalous Hall effect in $κ$-type organic antiferromagnets

We theoretically propose a mechanism for the anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in an antiferrromagnetic (AFM) state of $κ$-type organic conductors. We incorporate the spin-orbit coupling in the effective Hubbard model on the $κ$-type lattice structure taking into account the orientation of the molecules and their arrangement with dimerization. Treating this model by means of the Hartree-Fock approximation and the linear response theory, we find that an intrinsic contribution to the Hall conductivity becomes nonzero in the electron-doped AFM metallic phase with a small canted ferromagnetic moment. We show that, contrary to the conventional wisdom, the spin canting is irrelevant to the Hall response; the nonzero Hall conductivity originates from the collinear component of the AFM order in the presence of the spin-orbit coupling. These features are well explained analytically in the limit of strong dimerization on the anisotropic triangular lattice. Furthermore, we present an intuitive picture for the present AHE by considering the real-space configuration of emergent magnetic fluxes. We also find that the Hall response appears even in the undoped AFM insulating phase at nonzero frequency as the magneto-optical Kerr effect, which is enhanced around the charge transfer excitations. We discuss possible detections of the AHE in ET based compounds.

Magnetic hedgehog lattices in noncentrosymmetric metals

The magnetic hedgehog lattice (HL) is a noncoplanar magnetic texture with a periodic array of magnetic monopoles and anti-monopoles. Despite phenomenological and numerical studies thus far, there remain open issues on the microscopic origin, especially with respect to the recent experimental findings of two different types of HLs even at zero magnetic field. Here, we study the stability of the HLs for an effective spin model with long-range interactions arising from itinerant nature of electrons. By variational calculations and simulated annealing, we find that the HLs are stabilized in the ground state at zero magnetic field by the synergetic effect of the anti-symmetric exchange interactions generated by the spin-orbit coupling and the multiple-spin interactions generated by the spin-charge coupling. We also clarify the phase diagram in the magnetic fields, which includes topological phase transitions with pair annihilation of the monopoles and anti-monopoles depending on the field directions.

Odd-Parity Multipoles by Staggered Magnetic Dipole and Electric Quadrupole Orderings in CeCoSi

We investigate a possibility of odd-parity multipole orderings in a locally noncentrosymmetric tetragonal compound CeCoSi. By performing symmetrical and microscopic mean-field analyses on a two-orbital tight-binding model, we propose potential odd-parity multipoles hidden in staggered antiferromagnetic and antiferroquadrupole orderings in CeCoSi. We show that $3z^2-r^2$ type of the magnetic quadrupole is induced by the staggered magnetic dipole ordering for a large crystal-field splitting between two orbitals, while $xy$ type of the electric toroidal quadrupole is emergent by the staggered electric quadrupole ordering for a small crystal-field splitting. Furthermore, we discuss a magneto-electric effect and elastic-electric effect due to the odd-parity multipoles, which will be useful to identify order parameters in CeCoSi.

Double-$Q$ Chiral Stripe in the $d$-$p$ Model with Strong Spin-Charge Coupling

We investigate the stability of multiple-$Q$ spiral states in $d$-$p$ electron systems with the strong spin-charge coupling. By using variational calculations on a square lattice, we find that the double-$Q$ state with the scalar chirality density wave, which has been studied in the weak spin-charge coupling regime, becomes the ground state even in the strong spin-charge coupling regime by considering the effect of the $d$-$p$ hybridization. We also show that the regions where the double-$Q$ state is stabilized are widely extended for introducing the antiferromagnetic superexchange interaction between nearest-neighbor localized spins.

Dimension transcendence and anomalous charge transport in magnets with moving multiple-$Q$ spin textures

Multiple-$Q$ spin textures, such as magnetic bubble and skyrmion lattices, can be driven into motion by external stimuli. The motion of spin textures affects the electronic states. Here we show that to describe correctly the electronic dynamics, the momentum space needs to be transcended to higher dimensions by including the ancillary dimensions associated with phason modes of the translational motion of the spin textures. The electronic states have non-trivial topology characterized by the first and second Chern numbers in the high dimensional hybrid momentum space. This gives rise to an anomalous electric charge transport due to the motion of spin textures. By deforming the spin textures, a nonlinear response associated with the second Chern number can be induced. The charge transport is derived from the semi-classical equation of motion of electrons that depends on the Berry curvature in the hybrid momentum space. Our results suggest that the motion of multiple-$Q$ spin textures has significant effects on the electronic dynamics and provides a new platform to explore high dimensional topological physics.

Momentum-Dependent Spin Splitting by Collinear Antiferromagnetic Ordering

We clarify the macroscopic symmetry and microscopic model-parameter conditions for emergence of spin-split electronic band structure in collinear antiferromagnets without atomic spin-orbit coupling. By using the microscopic multipole descriptions, we elucidate the fundamental degree of freedom in a cluster unit of an antiferromagnet giving rise to an effective spin-orbit interaction through the anisotropic kinetic motions of electrons. We show a correspondence of the ordering patterns and resultant momentum-dependent spin splitting for 32 crystallographic point groups after demonstrating two intuitive examples of four-sublattice pyrochlore and tetragonal systems. Our study unveils potential features of collinear antiferromagnets with considerably weak spin-orbit coupling in light-element materials and 3$d$ transition metal oxides, which can be utilized for a spin-current generation by electric (thermal) current and a magneto-striction effect.
