One-dimensional projection of two-dimensional systems using spiral boundary conditions

We introduce spiral boundary conditions (SBCs) as a useful tool for handling the shape of finite-size periodic clusters. Using SBCs, a lattice model for more than two dimensions can be exactly projected onto a one-dimensional (1D) periodic chain with translational invariance. Hence, the existing 1D techniques such as density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG), bosonization, Jordan-Wigner transformation, etc., can be effectively applied to the projected 1D model. First, we describe the 1D projection scheme for the two-dimensional (2D) square- and honeycomb-lattice tight-binding models in real and momentum space. Next, we discuss how the density of states and the ground-state energy approach their thermodynamic limits. Finally, to demonstrate the utility of SBCs in DMRG simulations, we estimate the magnitude of staggered magnetization of the 2D XXZ Heisenberg model as a function of XXZ anisotropy.

Unravelling the Nature of Spin Excitations Disentangled from Charge Contributions in a Doped Cuprate Superconductor

The nature of the spin excitations in superconducting cuprates is a key question toward a unified understanding of the cuprate physics from long-range antiferromagnetism to superconductivity. The intense spin excitations up to the over-doped regime revealed by resonant inelastic X-ray scattering bring new insights as well as questions like how to understand their persistence or their relation to the collective excitations in ordered magnets (magnons). Here, we study the evolution of the spin excitations upon hole-doping the superconducting cuprate Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+δ}$ by disentangling the spin from the charge excitations in the experimental cross section. We compare our experimental results against density matrix renormalization group calculations for a $t$-$J$-like model on a square lattice. Our results unambiguously confirm the persistence of the spin excitations, which are closely connected to the persistence of short-range magnetic correlations up to high doping. This suggests that the spin excitations in hole-doped cuprates are related to magnons -- albeit short-ranged.

Study of Staggered Magnetization in the Spin-$S$ Square-Lattice Heisenberg Model Using Spiral Boundary Conditions

We propose an efficient numerical method to obtain local order parameter in two-dimensional systems using spiral boundary conditions. As a benchmark, we first estimate the magnitude of staggered magnetization for the $S=1/2$ XXZ Heisenberg model on a square lattice in the whole range of the XXZ anisotropy by density-matrix renormalization group technique. The validity of our method is confirmed by comparing our results with the previous analytical and numerical studies. Then, as further demonstration, we apply our method to obtain the staggered magnetization for the higher-spin cases from $S=1$ to $S=6$. The accuracy of the obtained results is validated using the series expansion and the spin-wave theory.

Coupled frustrated ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic quantum spin chains in the quasi-one-dimensional mineral antlerite, Cu$_3$SO$_4$(OH)$_4$

Magnetic frustration, the competition among exchange interactions, often leads to novel magnetic ground states with unique physical properties which can hinge on details of interactions that are otherwise difficult to observe. Such states are particularly interesting when it is possible to tune the balance among the interactions to access multiple types of magnetic order. We present antlerite, Cu$_3$SO$_4$(OH)$_4$, as a potential platform for tuning frustration. Contrary to previous reports, the low-temperature magnetic state of its three-leg zigzag ladders is a quasi-one-dimensional analog of the magnetic state recently proposed to exhibit spinon-magnon mixing in botallackite. Density functional theory calculations indicate that antlerite's magnetic ground state is exquisitely sensitive to fine details of the atomic positions, with each chain independently on the cusp of a phase transition, indicating an excellent potential for tunability.

First Order Topological Phase Transitions and Disorder Induced Majorana Modes in Interacting Fermion Chains

Using a combination of the mean-field Bogoliubov deGennes (BdG) approach and the Density Matrix Renormalization Group (DMRG) method, we discover first order topological transitions between topological superconducting and trivial insulating phases in a sawtooth lattice of inter-site attractive fermions. Topological characterization of different phases is achieved in terms of winding numbers, Majorana edge modes and entanglement spectra. By studying the effect of disorder on the first order topological phase transitions, we establish the disorder-induced topological phase coexistence as a mechanism for generating a finite density of Majorana particles.

Characterization of topological insulators based on the electronic polarization with spiral boundary conditions

We introduce the electronic polarization originally defined in one-dimensional lattice systems to characterize two-dimensional topological insulators. The main idea is to use spiral boundary conditions which sweep all lattice sites in one-dimensional order. We find that the sign of the polarization changes at topological transition points of the two-dimensional Wilson-Dirac model (the lattice version of the Bernevig-Hughes-Zhang model) in the same way as in one-dimensional systems. Thus the polarization plays the role of "order parameter" to characterize the topological insulating state and enables us to study topological phases in different dimensions in a unified way.

Thermal transport of the frustrated spin-chain mineral linarite: Magnetic heat transport and strong spin-phonon scattering

The mineral linarite (PbCuSO$_4$(OH)$_2$) forms a monoclinic structure where a sequence of Cu(OH)$_2$ units forms a spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ chain. Competing ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor ($J_1$) and antiferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interactions ($J_2$) in this quasi-one-dimensional spin structure imply magnetic frustration and lead to magnetic ordering below $T_N =$2.8 K in a mutliferroic elliptical spin-spiral ground state. Upon the application of a magnetic field along the spin-chain direction, distinct magnetically ordered phases can be induced. We studied the thermal conductivity $κ$ in this material across the magnetic phase diagram as well as in the paramagnetic regime in the temperature ranges 0.07-1 K and 9-300 K. We found that in linarite the heat is carried mainly by phonons but shows a peculiar non-monotonic behavior in field. In particular, $κ$ is highly suppressed at the magnetic phase boundaries, indicative of strong scattering of the phonons off critical magnetic fluctuations. Even at temperatures far above the magnetically ordered phases, the phononic thermal conductivity is reduced due to scattering off magnetic fluctuations. The mean free path due to spin-phonon scattering ($l_{\text{spin-phonon}}$) was determined as function of temperature. A power law behavior was observed mainly above 0.5 K indicating the thermal activation of spin fluctuations. In the critical regime close to the saturation field, $l_{\text{spin-phonon}}$ shows a $1/T$ dependence. Furthermore, a magnon thermal transport channel was verified in the helical magnetic phase. We estimate a magnon mean free path which corresponds to about 1000 lattice spacings.

Spin-$S$ impurities with XXZ anisotropy in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain

We study the effect of anisotropy of spin-$S$ impurities on an antiferromagnetic SU(2) Heisenberg chain. The magnetic impurities are assumed to have an XXZ-type anisotropic exchange with its neighboring sites. First, using density-matrix renormalization group technique. we examine spin-spin correlation function, instability of Néel order, and local spin susceptibility in the presence of a single spin-$S$ impurity. Based on the results, we find that the types of spin-$S$ impurities are classified into two groups: $\rm(\hspace{.18em}i\hspace{.18em})$ nonmagnetic and $S=1$ impurities enhance only short-range antiferromagnetic correlation and $\rm(\hspace{.08em}ii\hspace{.08em})$ $S=1/2$ and $S>1$ impurities can, in contrast, stabilize a long-range Néel order in the disordered SU(2) Heisenberg chain. Then, we focus on the case of $S=1/2$ impurity as a representative of $\rm(\hspace{.08em}ii\hspace{.08em})$ and investigate the evolution of some experimentally observable quantities such as magnetization, specific heat, and magnetic susceptibility, as a function of concentration and XXZ anisotropy strength of the impurity. We confirm that the Néel order is induced in the bulk spin chain in the presence of finite amount of easy-axis XXZ $S=1/2$ impurities. Furthermore, we recover some of the aforementioned features using cluster mean-field theory, which allows us to present results on experimentally accessible quantities at finite temperatures. Interestingly, in the presence of uniform magnetic field, the total magnetization exhibits a pseudo-gap behavior for low values of applied field. We also discuss the dependence of NMR spectrum on various XXZ impurities and identify that the spin state of Co impurity in SrCu$_{0.99}$Co$_{0.01}$O$_2$ is $S = 3/2$.

Anomalous and Anisotropic Nonlinear Susceptibility in the Proximate Kitaev Magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$

The leading order nonlinear (NL) susceptibility, $χ_3$, in a paramagnet is negative and diverges as $T \rightarrow 0$. This divergence is destroyed when spins correlate and the NL response provides unique insights into magnetic order. Dimensionality, exchange interaction, and preponderance of quantum effects all imprint their signatures in the NL magnetic response. Here, we study the NL susceptibilities in the proximate Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ which differs from the expected antiferromagnetic behavior. For $T< T_c$ = 7.5 K and field $B$ in the ab-plane, we obtain contrasting NL responses in low ($<$ 2 ${T}$) and high field regions. For low fields the NL behavior is dominated by a quadratic response (positive $χ_2$), which shows a rapid rise below $T_c$. This large $χ_2 >0$ implies a broken sublattice symmetry of magnetic order at low temperatures. Classical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations in the standard ${K-H-Γ}$ model secure such a quadratic ${B}$ dependence of ${M}$, only for ${T}$ $\approx$ ${T}_c$ with $χ_2$ being zero as ${T}$ $\rightarrow$ 0. It is also zero for all temperatures in exact diagonalization calculations. On the other hand, we find an exclusive cubic term ($χ_3$) describes the high field NL behavior well. $χ_3$ is large and positive both below and above ${T}_c$ crossing zero only for ${T}$ $>$ 50 K. In contrast, for $B$~$\parallel$~c-axis, no separate low/high field behaviors is measured and only a much smaller $χ_3$ is apparent.

Anomalous fractional quantization in the kagomelike Heisenberg ladder: Emergence of the effective spin-1 chain

We study a Kagome-like spin-$1/2$ Heisenberg ladder with competing ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) exchange interactions. Using the density-matrix renormalization group based calculations, we obtain the ground state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between the FM and AFM exchange interactions. Five different phases exist. Three of them are spin polarized phases; an FM phase and two kinds of ferrimagnetic (FR) phases (referred to as FR1 and FR2 phases). The spontaneous magnetization per site is $m=1/2$, $1/3$, and $1/6$ in the FM, FR1, and FR2 phases, respectively. This can be understood from the fact that an effective spin-1 Heisenberg chain formed by the upper and lower leg spins has a three-step fractional quantization of the magnetization per site as $m=1$, $1/2$, and $0$. In particular, an anomalous "intermediate" state $m=1/2$ of the effective spin-1 chain with the reduced Hilbert space of a spin from $3$ to $2$ dimensional is highly unexpected in the context of conventional spin-1 physics. Thus, surprisingly, the effective spin-1 chain behaves like a spin-1/2 chain with SU(2) symmetry. The remaining two phases are spin-singlet phases with translational symmetry breaking in the presence of valence bond formations. One of them is octamer-siglet phase with a spontaneous octamerization long-range order of the system, and the other is period-4 phase characterized by the magnetic superstructure with a period of four structural unit cells. In these spin-singlet phases, we find the coexistence of valence bond structure and gapless chain. Although this may be emerged through the order-by-disorder mechanism, there can be few examples of such a coexistence.

Exact Plaquette-Ordered Ground States with Exact Edge States of the Generalized Hubbard Model in Corner Sharing Lattices

We discuss exact plaquette-ordered ground states of the generalized Hubbard model based on the projection operator method for several corner sharing lattices: Kagome, checkerboard, and pyrochlore lattices. The obtained exact ground states are interpreted as Néel ordered states on the plaquette-located electrons. We demonstrate that these models also have exact edge states. We also calculate the entanglement entropy exactly in these systems.

Finite-temperature properties of excitonic condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model: Cluster mean-field-theory approach

We study the electron-hole pair (or excitonic) condensation in the extended Falicov-Kimball model at finite temperatures based on the cluster mean-field-theory approach, where we make the grand canonical exact-diagonalization analysis of small clusters using the sine-square deformation function. We thus calculate the ground-state and finite-temperature phase diagrams of the model, as well as its optical conductivity and single-particle spectra, thereby clarifying how the preformed pair states appear in the strong-coupling regime of excitonic insulators. We compare our results with experiment on Ta$_2$NiSe$_5$.

Variety of order-by-disorder phases in the asymmetric $J_1-J_2$ zigzag ladder: From the delta chain to the $J_1-J_2$ chain

We study an asymmetric $J_1$-$J_2$ zigzag ladder consisting of two different spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ antiferromagnetic (AFM; $J_2$, $γJ_2>0$) Heisenberg legs coupled by zigzag-shaped ferromagnetic (FM; $J_1<0$) inter-leg interaction. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group based calculations the ground-state phase diagram is obtained as functions of $γ$ and $J_2/|J_1|$. It contains four kinds of frustration-induced ordered phases except a trivial FM phase. Two of the ordered phases are valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization, which is a rather conventional order by disorder. Still, it is interesting to note that the VBS states possess an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological hidden order. The remaining two phases are ferrimagnetic orders, each of which is distinguished by commensurate or incommensurate spin-spin correlation. It is striking that the ferrimagnetic orders are not associated with geometrical symmetry breaking; instead, the global spin-rotation symmetry is broken. In other words, the system lowers its energy via the FM inter-leg interaction by polarizing both of the AFM Heisenberg legs. This is a rare type of order by disorder. Besides, the incommensurate ferrimagnetic state appears as a consequence of the competition between a polarization and a critical Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid behavior in the AFM Heisenberg legs.

Large off diagonal exchange couplings and spin liquid states in $\mathbf{C_3}$ symmetric iridates

Iridate oxides on a honeycomb lattice are considered promising candidates for realization of quantum spin liquid states. We investigate the magnetic couplings in a structural model for a honeycomb iridate K$_2$IrO$_3$, with $C_3$ point group symmetry at the Ir sites, which is an end member of the recently synthesized iridate family K$_x$Ir$_y$O$_2$. Using \textit{ab-initio} quantum chemical methods, we elucidate the subtle relationship between the real space symmetry and magnetic anisotropy and show that the higher point group symmetry leads to high frustration with strong magnetic anisotropy driven by the unusually large off-diagonal exchange couplings ($Γ$'s) as opposed to other spin-liquid candidates considered so far. Consequently, large quantum fluctuations imply lack of magnetic ordering consistent with the experiments. Exact diagonalization calculations for the fully anisotropic $K$-$J$-$Γ$ Hamiltonian reveal the importance of the off-diagonal anisotropic exchange couplings in stabilizing a spin liquid state and highlight an alternative route to stabilize spin liquid states for ferromagnetic $K$.

Field-induced incommensurate ordering in the Heisenberg chains coupled by Ising interaction: Model for the ytterbium aluminum perovskite YbAlO$_3$

We study isotropic antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains coupled by antiferromagnetic Ising interaction as an effective spin model for the ytterbium aluminum perovskite YbAlO$_3$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method we calculate the magnetization curve, local spin, central charge, and dynamical spin structure factors in the presence of magnetic field. From the fitting of the experimental magnetization curve, the effective intrachain and interchain couplings are estimated as $J=2.3$K and $J_{\rm ic}=0.8$K, respectively. We can quantitatively explain the experimental observations: (i) phase transition from antiferromagnetic to incommensurate order at field 0.35T, and (ii) quantum critical behaviors at the saturation field of 1.21T. Furthermore, the low-energy excitations in the experimental inelastic neutron scattering spectra can be well described by our DMRG results of the dynamical structure factors.

Critical spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ tetramer compound CuInVO$_5$: Exploring the vicinity of two multimerized singlet states

Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique, we study a one-dimensional spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg chain consisting of coupled tetramers as an effective spin model for copper vanadate CuInVO$_5$. We obtain the ground-state phase diagram as a function of intra-tetramer and inter-tetramer exchange interactions, exhibiting two multimerized valence-bond-solid (VBS) phases : one is characterized by the formation of tetramer-singlet units; the other by the formation of dimer-singlet pairs. We show that the finite spin gaps in both the VBS phases smoothly vanish at the phase boundary: a second order phase transition defining a quantum critical point (QCP). The phase boundary is also captured by the fact that the central charge is unity at the phase boundary and zero otherwise in the thermodynamic limit. We further demonstrate that the experimental magnetization curve (which starts increasing with zero or tiny field) can be reasonably explained only by assuming the exchange parameters of CuInVO$_5$ to be very close to the phase boundary. Thus, we argue that CuInVO$_5$ may be a first example material which at ambient pressure stands near a QCP between two VBS phases. By varying the balance of exchange interactions with pressure, a transition from Néel to either of the VBS phases could be observed.

Triplet superconductivity in coupled odd-gon rings

Shedding light on the nature of spin-triplet superconductivity has been a long-standing quest of solid-state physics since the discovery of superfluidity in liquid $^3$He. Nevertheless, the mechanism of spin-triplet pairing is much less understood than that of spin-singlet pairing explained by the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer theory or even observed in high-temperature superconductors. Here we propose a versatile mechanism for spin-triplet superconductivity, which is mediated through a melting of macroscopic spin polarization in weakly coupled odd-gon-unit system (e.g., triangular unit, pentagon unit, etc). We demonstrate the application of this mechanism by considering a new class of quasi-one-dimensional superconductors A$_2$Cr$_3$As$_3$ (A=K, Rb, and Cs). Furthermore, we derive a simple effective Hamiltonian to easily illustrate the adaptability of the mechanism to general coupled odd-gon-unit systems. We thus argue that materials consisting of odd-numbered geometric units would be a prospect of spin-triplet superconductivity.

Ground state and low-energy excitations of the Kitaev-Heisenberg ladder

We study the ground state and low-lying excited states of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a ladder geometry using the density matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. The Kitaev and Heisenberg interactions are parametrized as $K=\sinϕ$ and $J=\cosϕ$ with an angle parameter $ϕ$. Based on the results for several types of order parameters, excitation gaps, and entanglement spectra, the $ϕ$-dependent ground-state phase diagram is determined. Remarkably, the phase diagram is quite similar to that of the Kitaev-Heisenberg model on a honeycomb lattice, exhibiting the same long-range ordered states, namely rung-singlet (analog to Néel in 3D), zigzag, ferromagnetic, and stripy; and the presence of Kitaev spin liquids around the exactly solvable Kitaev points $ϕ=\pmπ/2$. We also calculate the expectation value of a plaquette operator corresponding to a $π$-flux state in order to establish how the Kitaev spin liquid extends away from the $ϕ=\pmπ/2$. Furthermore, we determine the dynamical spin structure factor and discuss the effect of the Kitaev interaction on the spin-triplet dispersion.
