Coexistence of valence-bond formation and topological order in the Frustrated Ferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ Chain

Frustrated one-dimensional (1D) magnets are known as ideal playgrounds for new exotic quantum phenomena to emerge. We consider an elementary frustrated 1D system: the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ ferromagnetic ($J_1$) Heisenberg chain with next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2$) interactions. On the basis of density-matrix renormalization group calculations we show the existence of a finite spin gap at $J_2/|J_1|>1/4$ and we find the ground state in this region to be a valence bond solid (VBS) with spin-singlet dimerization between third-neighbor sites. The VBS is the consequence of spontaneous symmetry breaking through order by disorder. Quite interestingly, this VBS state has a Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki-type topological order. This is the first example of a frustrated spin chain in which quantum fluctuations induce gapped topological order.

Strong effect of hydrogen order on magnetic Kitaev interactions in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$

Very recently a quantum liquid was reported to form in H$_3$LiIr$_2$O$_6$, an iridate proposed to be a close realization of the Kitaev honeycomb model. To test this assertion we perform detailed quantum chemistry calculations to determine the magnetic interactions between Ir moments. We find that weakly bond dependent ferromagnetic Kitaev exchange dominates over other couplings, but still is substantially lower than in Na$_2$IrO$_3$. This reduction is caused by the peculiar position of the inter-layer species: removing hydrogen cations next to a Ir$_2$O$_2$ plaquette increases the Kitaev exchange by more than a factor of three on the corresponding Ir-Ir link. Consequently any lack of hydrogen order will have a drastic effect on the magnetic interactions and strongly promote spin disordering.

Phase diagram of Hubbard-Holstein model on 4-leg tube system at quarter-filling

We derive an effective electronic Hamiltonian for square lattice Hubbard-Holstein model (HHM) in the strong electron-electron (e-e) and electron-phonon (e-ph) coupling regime and under non-adiabatic conditions ($t/ω_0 \leq 1$), $t$ and $ω_0$ being the electron hopping and phonon frequency respectively. Using Density Matrix Renormalization Group method, we simulate this effective electronic model on $4-$Leg cylinder system at quarter-filling and present a phase diagram in $g-U$ plane where $g$ and $U$ are being the e-ph coupling constant and Hubbard on-site interaction respectively. For larger $g$, we find cluster of spins i.e. phase separation (PS) gives way to a charge density wave (CDW) phase made of NN singlets which abruptly goes to another CDW phase as we increase $U$. But for smaller $g$, we find a metallic phase sandwiched between PS and singlet CDW phase. This phase is characterized by vanishing charge gap but finite spin gap -- suggesting a singlet superconducting phase.

Exact Ground States of the Extended Hubbard Model on the Kagome lattice

We discuss the exact plaquette-ordered ground states of the generalized Hubbard model on the Kagomé lattice for several fillings, by constructing the Hamiltonian as a sum of products of projection operators for up and down spin sectors. The obtained exact ground states are interpreted as Néel ordered states on the bond-located electrons. We determine several parameter regions of the exact ground states, and calculate the entanglement entropy. We examine the above results by numerical calculations based on exact diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods.

Ordered states in the Kitaev-Heisenberg model: From 1D chains to 2D honeycomb

We study the ground state of the 1D Kitaev-Heisenberg (KH) model using the density-matrix renormalization group and Lanczos exact diagonalization methods. We obtain a rich ground-state phase diagram as a function of the ratio between Heisenberg ($J=\cosϕ)$ and Kitaev ($K=\sinϕ$) interactions. Depending on the ratio, the system exhibits four long-range ordered states: ferromagnetic-$z$ , ferromagnetic-$xy$, staggered-$xy$, Néel-$z$, and two liquid states: Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid and spiral-$xy$. The two Kitaev points $ϕ=\fracπ{2}$ and $ϕ=\frac{3π}{2}$ are singular. The $ϕ$-dependent phase diagram is similar to that for the 2D honeycomb-lattice KH model. Remarkably, all the ordered states of the honeycomb-lattice KH model can be interpreted in terms of the coupled KH chains. We also discuss the magnetic structure of the K-intercalated RuCl$_3$, a potential Kitaev material, in the framework of the 1D KH model. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the low-lying excitations of the 1D KH Hamiltonian can be explained within the combination of the known six-vertex model and spin-wave theory.

Low temperature enhancement of ferromagnetic Kitaev correlations in α-RuCl3

Kitaev-type interactions between neighbouring magnetic moments emerge in the honeycomb material $α$-RuCl3. It is debated however whether these Kitaev interactions are ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic. With electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) we study the lowest excitation across the Mott-Hubbard gap, which involves a d4 triplet in the final state and therefore is sensitive to nearest-neighbor spin-spin correlations. At low temperature the spectral weight of these triplets is strongly enhanced, in accordance with optical data. We show that the magnetic correlation function that determines this EELS spectral weight is directly related to a Kitaev-type spin-spin correlator and that the temperature dependence agrees very well with the results of a microscopic magnetic Hamiltonian for $α$-RuCl3 with ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling.

Cross-over from an incommensurate singlet spiral state with a vanishingly small spin-gap to a valence bond solid state in dimerized frustrated ferromagnetic spin-chains

Motivated by the magnetic properties of the spin-chain compounds LiCuSbO$_4$$\equiv$LiSbCuO$_4$ and Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, we study the ground state of the Heisenberg chain with dimerized nearest-neighbor ferromagnetic (FM)($J_1, J_1^\prime<0$) and next-nearest-neighbor antiferromagnetic ($J_2>0$) couplings. Using the density-matrix renormalization group technique and spin-wave theory we find a first-order transition between a fully-polarized FM and an incommensurate spiral state at $2α=β/(1+β)$, where $α$ is the frustration ratio $J_2/|J_1|$ and $β$ the degree of dimerization $J_1^\prime/J_1$.In the singlet spiral state the spin-gap is vanishingly small in the vicinity of the FM transition, corresponding to a situation of LiCuSbO$_4$. For larger $α$, corresponding to Rb$_2$Cu$_2$Mo$_3$O$_{12}$, and smaller $β$ there is a crossover from this frustration induced incommensurate state to an Affleck-Lieb-Kennedy-Tasaki-type valence bond solid state with substantial spin-gaps.

Heavy-mass magnetic modes in pyrochlore iridates due to dominant Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction

Materials with strong spin-orbit interactions are presently a main target in the search for systems with novel magnetic properties. Magnetic anisotropies can be very large in such compounds, ranging from strongly frustrated Kitaev exchange in honeycomb iridates and the associated spin-liquid states to robust antisymmetric couplings in square-lattice Sr_2IrO_4 . Here we predict from ab initio quantum chemistry calculations that another highly unusual regime is realized in pyrochlore iridium oxides: the nearest-neighbor Heisenberg interaction can vanish whilst the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii- Moriya exchange reaches values as large as 5 meV, a result which challenges common notions and existing phenomenological models of magnetic superexchange. The resulting spin excitation spectra reveal a very flat magnon dispersion in the Nd- and Tb-based pyrochlore iridates, suggesting the possibility of using these modes to store magnetic information. Indeed the magnetization dynamics indicates that these modes are unable to propagate out of the excitation region.

Frustrated spin chain physics near the Majumdar-Ghosh point in szenicsite Cu$_3$(MoO$_4$)(OH)$_4$

In this joint experimental and theoretical work magnetic properties of the Cu$^{2+}$ mineral szenicsite Cu$_3$(MoO$_4$)(OH)$_4$ are investigated. This compound features isolated triple chains in its crystal structure, where the central chain involves an edge-sharing geometry of the CuO$_4$ plaquettes, while the two side chains feature a corner-sharing zig-zag geometry. The magnetism of the side chains can be described in terms of antiferromagnetic dimers with a coupling larger than 200 K. The central chain was found to be a realization of the frustrated antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ chain model with $J_1\simeq 68$ K and a sizable second-neighbor coupling $J_2$. The central and side chains are nearly decoupled owing to interchain frustration. Therefore, the low-temperature behavior of szenicsite should be entirely determined by the physics of the central frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ chain. Our heat-capacity measurements reveal an accumulation of entropy at low temperatures and suggest a proximity of the system to the Majumdar-Ghosh point of the antiferromagnetic $J_1$-$J_2$ spin chain, $J_2/J_1=0.5$.

Entanglement properties of the Haldane phases: A finite system-size approach

We study the bond-alternating Heisenberg model using the finite-size density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique and analytical arguments based on the matrix product state, where we pay particular attention to the boundary-condition dependence on the entanglement spectrum of the system. We show that, in the antiperiodic boundary condition (APBC), the parity quantum numbers are equivalent to the topological invariants characterizing the topological phases protected by the bond-centered inversion and $π$ rotation about $z$ axis. We also show that the odd parity in the APBC, which characterizes topologically nontrivial phases, can be extracted as a two-fold degeneracy in the entanglement spectrum even with finite system size. We then determine the phase diagram of the model with the uniaxial single-ion anisotropy using the level spectroscopy method in the DMRG technique. These results not only suggest the detectability of the symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases via general twisted boundary conditions but also provide a useful and precise numerical tool for discussing the SPT phases in the exact diagonalization and DMRG techniques.

Quasi-two-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensation of spin triplets in dimerized quantum magnet Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$

We synthesized single crystals of composition Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ and investigated its quantum magnetic properties. The crystal structure is closely related to that of the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) dimerized magnet BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ also known as Han purple. Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ has a singlet ground state with an excitation gap of $Δ/k_{\rm B}\,{=}\,20.8$ K. The magnetization curves for two different field directions almost perfectly coincide when normalized by the $g$-factor except for a small jump anomaly for a magnetic field perpendicular to the $c$ axis. The magnetization curve with a nonlinear slope above the critical field is in excellent agreement with exact-diagonalization calculations based on a 2D coupled spin-dimer model. Individual exchange constants are also evaluated using density functional theory (DFT). The DFT results demonstrate a 2D exchange network and weak frustration between interdimer exchange interactions, supported by weak spin-lattice coupling implied from our magnetostriction data. The magnetic-field-induced spin ordering in Ba$_2$CuSi$_2$O$_6$Cl$_2$ is described as the quasi-2D Bose-Einstein condensation of triplets.

Spin-orbit excitation energies, anisotropic exchange, and magnetic phases of honeycomb RuCl3

Using quantum chemistry calculations we shed fresh light on the electronic structure and magnetic properties of RuCl3, a proposed realization of the honeycomb Kitaev spin model. It is found that the nearest-neighbor Kitaev exchange K is weaker than in 5d5 Ir oxides but still larger than other effective spin couplings. The electronic-structure computations also indicate a ferromagnetic K in the halide, which is supported by a detailed analysis of the field-dependent magnetization. From exact-diagonalization calculations for extended Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonians we additionally find that a transition from zigzag order to a spin-liquid ground state can be induced in RuCl3 with external magnetic field.

The vicinity of hyper-honeycomb $β$-Li2IrO3 to a three-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid state

Due to the combination of a substantial spin-orbit coupling and correlation effects, iridium oxides hold a prominent place in the search for novel quantum states of matter, including, e.g., Kitaev spin liquids and topological Weyl states. We establish the promise of the very recently synthesized hyper-honeycomb iridate $β$-Li2IrO3 in this regard. A detailed theoretical analysis reveals the presence of large ferromagnetic first-neighbor Kitaev interactions, while a second-neighbor antiferromagnetic Heisenberg exchange drives the ground state from ferro to zigzag order via a three-dimensional Kitaev spin liquid and an incommensurate phase. Experiment puts the system in the latter regime but the Kitaev spin liquid is very close and reachable by a slight modification of the ratio between the second- and first-neighbor couplings, for instance via strain.

Strongly frustrated triangular spin lattice emerging from triplet dimer formation in honeycomb Li2IrO3

In quantum magnetism spin dimers are typically associated with spin-singlet states. To date, $triplet$ $dimerization$ has not been observed in any 3D or quasi-2D material. With this in mind we here discuss the electronic structure of the spin-orbit driven $5d^5$ Mott insulator Li$_2$IrO$_3$, a honeycomb-lattice system with two crystallographically inequivalent Ir-Ir bonds. From $ab$ $initio$ many-body calculations we find that, while both Heisenberg and Kitaev couplings are present, the magnetic interactions are dominated by a strong isotropic ferromagnetic exchange on only one set of bonds. This causes the formation of triplet spin dimers effectively placed on a strongly frustrated triangular lattice. The triplet dimers remain protected in a large region of the phase diagram, suggesting that Li$_2$IrO$_3$ has a long-range incommensurate magnetic ground state that is pushed by the Kitaev exchange interactions beyond a standard planar helix configuration.

Strong magnetic frustration and anti-site disorder causing spin-glass behavior in honeycomb Li2RhO3

With large spin-orbit coupling, the $t_{2g}^5$ electron configuration in $d$-metal oxides is prone to highly anisotropic exchange interactions and exotic magnetic properties. In $5d^5$ iridates, given the existing variety of crystal structures, the magnetic anisotropy can be tuned from antisymmetric to symmetric Kitaev-type, with interaction strengths that outsize the isotropic terms. By many-body electronic-structure calculations we here address the nature of the magnetic exchange and the intriguing spin-glass behavior of Li$_2$RhO$_3$, a $4d^5$ honeycomb oxide. For pristine crystals without Rh-Li site inversion, we predict a dimerized ground state as in the isostructural $5d^5$ iridate Li$_2$IrO$_3$, with triplet spin dimers effectively placed on a frustrated triangular lattice. With Rh-Li anti-site disorder, we explain the observed spin-glass phase as a superposition of different, nearly degenerate symmetry-broken configurations.

Strongly enhanced superconductivity in coupled t-J segments

The $t\!\!-\!\!J$ Hamiltonian is one of the cornerstones in the theoretical study of strongly correlated copper-oxide based materials. Using the density matrix renormalization group method we calculate the phase diagram of the one-dimensional (1D) $t\!\!-\!\!J$ chain in the presence of a periodic hopping modulation, as a prototype of coupled-segment models. While in the uniform 1D $t\!\!-\!\!J$ model near half-filling superconducting (SC) state dominates only at unphysically large values of the exchange coupling constant $J/t>3$, we show that a small hopping and exchange modulation very strongly reduces the critical coupling to be as low as $J/t\sim1/3$ -- well within the physical regime. The phase diagram as a function of the electron filling also exhibits metallic, insulating line phases and regions of phase separation. We suggest that a SC state is easily stabilized if $t\!\!-\!\!J$ segments creating local spin-singlet pairing are coupled to each other -- another example is ladder system.

Suppression of the impurity-induced local magnetism by the opening of a spin pseudogap in Ni-doped Sr$_2$CuO$_3$

The $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg spin chain compound Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ doped with $1 \%$ and $2 \%$ of Ni impurities has been studied by means of $^{63}$Cu nuclear magnetic resonance. A strong decrease of the spin-lattice relaxation rate $T_1^{-1}$ at low temperatures points toward a spin gap, while a stretching exponent $λ< 1$ and a frequency dependence of $T_1^{-1}$ indicate that this spin gap varies spatially and should rather be characterized as a spin pseudogap. The magnitude of the spin pseudogap scales with doping level. Our results therefore evidence the finite-size character of this phenomenon. Moreover, an unusual narrowing of the low temperature NMR lines reveals the suppression of the impurity-induced staggered paramagnetic response with increasing doping level.

Orbital control of effective dimensionality: from spin-orbital fractionalization to confinement in the anisotropic ladder system CaCu2O3

Fractionalization of an electronic quasiparticle into spin, charge and orbital parts is a fundamental and characteristic property of interacting electrons in one dimension. However, real materials are never strictly one-dimensional and the fractionalization phenomena are hard to observe. Here we studied the spin and orbital excitations of the anisotropic ladder material CaCu2O3, whose electronic structure is not one-dimensional. Combining high-resolution resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiments with theoretical model calculations we show that: (i) spin-orbital fractionalization occurs in CaCu2O3 along the leg direction x through the xz orbital channel as in a 1D system; and (ii) no fractionalization is observed for the xy orbital, which extends in both leg and rung direction, contrary to a 1D system. We conclude that the directional character of the orbital hopping can select different degrees of dimensionality. Using additional model calculations, we show that spin-orbital separation is generally far more robust than the spin-charge separation. This is not only due to the already mentioned selection realized by the orbital hopping, but also due to the fact that spinons are faster than the orbitons.
