Non-Symmetry-Breaking Ground State of the S=1 Heisenberg Model on the Kagome lattice

The $S=1$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on a Kagome lattice is studied using the density-matrix renormalization group method. To identify the ground state, we take four kinds of clusters into account; periodic, cylindrical, and two open ones. The hexagonal singlet solid (HSS) and triangular valence bond solid (TVBS) states are artificially generated by modulating edge shapes of the open clusters. We find that the energy par sites of the HSS state is $e_0=E_0/N =-1.41095$, which is readily lower than that of the TVBS state ($e_0=-1.3912 \pm 0.0025$). This agrees well with those of the cylindrical ($e_0=-1.40988$) and periodic ($e_0=-1.409 \pm 0.005$) clusters, where no assumption as to the ordering is posed. Thus, we conclude that the HSS picture is consistent to describe the ground state of the $S=1$ Kagome Heisenberg model. This is further confirmed by finding non-symmetry-breaking state in the calculations of the dimer-dimer correlation functions as well as the entanglement entropy of cylindrical clusters. Finally, we estimate the single-triplet energy gap: The HSS ground state has $Δ=0.1919$, while the TVBS excited state has a larger one $Δ=0.2797$.

Quantum criticality in an asymmetric three-leg spin tube: A strong rung-coupling perspective

We study quantum phase transitions in the asymmetric variation of the three-leg Heisenberg tube for half-odd-integer spin, with a modulation of one of the rung exchange couplings $J'_\perp$ while the other two are kept constant $J_\perp$. We focus on the strong rung-coupling regime $J_\perp \gg J_\parallel$, where $J_\parallel$ is the leg coupling, and analyze the effective spin-orbital model with a transverse crystal field in detail. Applying the Abelian bosonization to the effective model, we find that the system is in the dimer phase for the general half-odd-integer-spin cases without the rung modulation; the phase transition between the dimer and Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid phases induced by the rung modulation is of the SU(2)-symmetric Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type. Moreover, we perform a level spectroscopy analysis for the effective model for spin-1/2 using exact diagonalization, to determine the precise transition point $| J'_\perp - J_\perp| /J_\parallel \sim 0.283$ in the strong rung-coupling limit. The presence of the dimer phase in a small but finite region is also confirmed by a density-matrix renormalization group calculation on the original spin-tube model.

Microscopic origin of spin-orbital separation in Sr2CuO3

Recently performed resonant inelastic x-ray scattering experiment (RIXS) at the copper L3 edge in the quasi-1D Mott insulator Sr2CuO3 has revealed a significant dispersion of a single orbital excitation (orbiton). This large and unexpected orbiton dispersion has been explained using the concept of spin-orbital fractionalization in which orbiton, which is intrinsically coupled to the spinon in this material, liberates itself from the spinon due to the strictly 1D nature of its motion. Here we investigate this mechanism in detail by: (i) deriving the microscopic spin-orbital superexchange model from the charge transfer model for the CuO3 chains in Sr2CuO3, (ii) mapping the orbiton motion in the obtained spin-orbital model into a problem of a single hole moving in an effective half-filled antiferromagnetic chain t-J model, and (iii) solving the latter model using the exact diagonalization and obtaining the orbiton spectral function. Finally, the RIXS cross section is calculated based on the obtained orbiton spectral function and compared with the RIXS experiment.

Controlling frustrated liquids and solids with an applied field in a kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet

Quantum spin-1/2 kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet is the representative frustrated system possibly hosting a spin liquid. Clarifying the nature of this elusive topological phase is a key challenge in condensed matter, however, even identifying it still remains unsettled. Here, we apply a magnetic field and discover a series of spin gapped phases appearing at five different fractions of magnetization by means of grand canonical density matrix renormalization group, an unbiased state-of-art numerical technique. The magnetic field dopes magnons and first gives rise to a possible Z3 spin liquid plateau at 1/9-magnetization. Higher field induces a self-organized super-lattice-unit, a six-membered ring of quantum spins, resembling an atomic orbital structure. Putting magnons into this unit one by one yields three quantum solid plateaus. We thus find that the magnetic field could control the transition between various emergent phases by continuously releasing the frustration.

Plaquette-RVB state in the Frustrated Honeycomb Antiferromagnet

We study the proposed plaquette-RVB (pRVB) state in the honeycomb lattice $J_1-J_2$ model with frustration arising from next-nearest neighbour interactions. Starting with the limit of decoupled hexagons, we develop a plaquette operator approach to describe the pRVB state and its low energy excitations. Our calculation clarifies that the putative pRVB state necessarily has f-wave symmetry - the plaquette wavefunction is an antisymmetric combination of the Kekulé structures. We estimate the plaquette ordering amplitude, ground state energy and spin gap as a function of $J_2/J_1$. The pRVB state is most stable around $J_2/J_1 \sim 0.25$. We identify the wavevectors of the lowest triplet excitations, which can be verified using exact diagonalization or DMRG studies. When $J_2$ is reduced, we can have either a deconfined Quantum Phase Transition (QPT) or a first-order transition into a Néel state. When $J_2$ is increased, we surmise that the system undergoes a first order phase transition into a state which breaks lattice rotational symmetry.

Deconfined criticality in the frustrated Heisenberg honeycomb antiferromagnet

Using the density-matrix renormalization group, we determine the phase diagram of the spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on a honeycomb lattice with a nearest neighbor interaction J1 and a frustrating, next-neighbor exchange J2. As frustration increases, the ground state exhibits Neel, plaquette and dimer orders, with critical points at J2/J1 = 0.22 and 0.35. We observe that both the spin gap and the corresponding order parameters vanish continuously at both the critical points, indicating the presence of deconfined quantum criticality.

The strength of frustration and quantum fluctuations in LiVCuO4

For the 1D-frustrated ferromagnetic J_1-J_2 model with interchain coupling added, we analyze the dynamical and static structure factor S(k,omega), the pitch angle phi of the magnetic structure, the magnetization curve of edge-shared chain cuprates, and focus on LiCuVO4 for which neither a perturbed spinon nor a spin wave approach can be applied. phi is found to be most sensitive to the interplay of frustration and quantum fluctuations. For LiVCuO4 the obtained exchange parameters J are in accord with the results for a realistic 5-band extended Hubbard model and LSDA + U predictions yielding alpha=J_2/|J_1| about 0.75 in contrast to 5.5 > alpha > 1.42 suggested in the literature. The alpha-regime of the empirical phi-values in NaCu2O2 and linarite are considered, too.

Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid criticality: numerical entanglement entropy approach

The von Neumann entanglement entropy is studied with the density-matrix renormalization group technique. We propose a simple approach to calculate the central charge using the entanglement entropy for one-dimensional (1D) quantum system. This approach is applied to a couple of quantum systems: (i) 1D frustrated spin model and (ii) 1D half-filled spinless fermions with nearest-neighbor repulsion; and, it is confirmed that the central charge is estimated very accurately for the both systems. Also, a new method to determine the critical point between TL-liquid and gapped (or ordered) phases from the proposed approach is suggested. Furthermore, we mention that the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter can be obtained in a like manner as the central charge, using the charge-density fluctuation of a part of the 1D system.

Intrinsic coupling of orbital excitations to spin fluctuations in Mott insulators

We show how the general and basic asymmetry between two fundamental degrees of freedom present in strongly correlated oxides, spin and orbital, has very profound repercussions on the elementary spin and orbital excitations. Whereas the magnons remain largely unaffected, orbitons become inherently coupled with spin fluctuations in spin-orbital models with antiferromagnetic and ferroorbital ordered ground states. The composite orbiton-magnon modes that emerge fractionalize again in one dimension, giving rise to spin-orbital separation in the peculiar regime where spinons are faster than orbitons.

Metal-insulator transition of the Kagome lattice fermions at 1/3 filling

We discuss the metal-insulator transition of the spinless fermion model on the Kagomé lattice at 1/3-filling. The system is analyzed using exact diagonalization, the density-matrix renormalization group methods and the random phase approximation. In the strong-coupling region, the charge-ordered ground state is consistent with the predictions of the effective model with a plaquette order. We find that the qualitative properties of the metal-insulator transition are totally different depending on the sign of the hopping integrals, reflecting the difference of band structure at the Fermi level.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional half-filled extended Hubbard model

We study the ground state of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model with on-site (nearest-neighbor) repulsive interaction $U$ ($V$) and nearest-neighbor hopping $t$. In order to obtain an accurate phase diagram, we consider various physical quantities such as the charge gap, spin gap, Luttinger-liquid exponents, and bond-order-wave (BOW) order parameter using the density-matrix renormalization group technique. We confirm that the BOW phase appears in a substantial region between the charge-density-wave (CDW) and spin-density-wave phases. Each phase boundary is determined by multiple means and it allows us to do a cross-check to demonstrate the validity of our estimations. Thus, our results agree quantitatively with the renormalization group results in the weak-coupling regime ($U \lesssim 2t$), with the perturbation results in the strong-coupling regime ($U \gtrsim 6t$), and with the quantum Monte Carlo results in the intermediate-coupling regime. We also find that the BOW-CDW transition changes from continuous to first order at the tricritical point $(U_{\rm t}, V_{\rm t}) \approx (5.89t, 3.10t)$ and the BOW phase vanishes at the critical end point $(U_{\rm c}, V_{\rm c}) \approx (9.25t, 4.76t)$.

Tomonaga-Luttinger parameters and spin excitations in the dimerized extended Hubbard model

We study the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model with alternating size of the hopping integrals using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We calculate the spin gap, the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter, and the charge-density-wave order parameter for various dimerizations, interaction strengths, and band fillings. At half band-filling the spin and charge excitations are gapped but these gaps disappear for infinitesimal hole doping. At quarter filling, the Umklapp scattering in the half-filled lower Peierls band generates a gap for the charge excitations but the gapless spin excitations can be described in terms of an effective antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model. Beyond a critical strength for the nearest-neighbor interaction, the dimerized extended Hubbard model at quarter filling develops a charge-density-wave ground state. The dimerization and the nearest-neighbor Coulomb interaction strongly reduce the Tomonaga-Luttinger parameter from its value for the bare Hubbard model. We discuss the relevance of our findings for the Bechgaard salts.

Spectral Density of the Two-Impurity Anderson Model

We investigate static and dynamical ground-state properties of the two-impurity Anderson model at half filling in the limit of vanishing impurity separation using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method. In the weak-coupling regime, we find a quantum phase transition as function of inter-impurity hopping driven by the charge degrees of freedom. For large values of the local Coulomb repulsion, the transition is driven instead by a competition between local and non-local magnetic correlations. We find evidence that, in contrast to the usual phenomenological picture, it seems to be the bare effective exchange interactions which trigger the observed transition.

Tomonaga-Luttinger parameters for doped Mott insulators

The Tomonaga--Luttinger parameter $K_ρ$ determines the critical behavior in quasi one-dimensional correlated electron systems, e.g., the exponent $α$ for the density of states near the Fermi energy. We use the numerical density-matrix renormalization group method to calculate $K_ρ$ from the slope of the density-density correlation function in momentum space at zero wave vector. We check the accuracy of our new approach against exact results for the Hubbard and XXZ Heisenberg models. We determine $K_ρ$ in the phase diagram of the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling, $n_{\rm c}=1/2$, and confirm the bosonization results $K_ρ=n_{\rm c}^2=1/4$ on the critical line and $K_ρ^{\rm CDW}=n_{\rm c}^2/2=1/8$ at infinitesimal doping of the charge-density-wave (CDW) insulator for all interaction strengths. The doped CDW insulator exhibits exponents $α>1$ only for small doping and strong correlations.

Phase Diagram of the $t$--$U$--$V_1$--$V_2$ Model at Quarter Filling

We examine the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model at quarter filling with Coulomb interactions between nearest-neighbors $V_1$ and next-nearest neighbors $V_2$. Using the density-matrix renormalization group and exact diagonalization methods, we obtain an accurate ground-state phase diagram in the $V_1$-$V_2$ plane with three different phases: $2k_{\rm F}$- and $4k_{\rm F}$-charge-density-wave and a broad metallic phase in-between. The metal is a Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid whose critical exponent $K_ρ$ is largest around $V_1=2V_2$, where $V_1$ and $V_2$ are frustrated, and smallest, $K_ρ=0.25$, at the boundaries between the metallic phase and each of the two ordered phases.

Dynamical Density-Matrix Renormalization Group for the Mott--Hubbard insulator in high dimensions

We study the Hubbard model at half band-filling on a Bethe lattice with infinite coordination number in the paramagnetic insulating phase at zero temperature. We use the dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) mapping to a single-impurity Anderson model with a bath whose properties have to be determined self-consistently. For a controlled and systematic implementation of the self-consistency scheme we use the fixed-energy (FE) approach to the DMFT. In FE-DMFT the onset and the width of the Hubbard bands are adjusted self-consistently but the energies of the bath levels are kept fixed relatively to both band edges during the calculation of self-consistent hybridization strengths between impurity and bath sites. Using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method (DDMRG) we calculate the density of states with a resolution ranging from 3% of the bare bandwidth $W=4t$ at high energies to 0.5% in the vicinity of the gap. The DDMRG resolution and accuracy for the density of states and the gap is superior to those obtained with other numerical methods in previous DMFT investigations. We find that the Mott gap closes at a critical coupling $U_{\rm c}/t=4.45 \pm 0.05$. At $U=4.5t$, we observe prominent shoulders near the onset of the Hubbard bands. They are the remainders of the quasi-particle resonance in the metallic phase which appears to split when the gap opens at $U_{\rm c}$.

Density-matrix renormalisation group approach to quantum impurity problems

A dynamic density-matrix renormalisation group approach to the spectral properties of quantum impurity problems is presented. The method is demonstrated on the spectral density of the flat-band symmetric single-impurity Anderson model. We show that this approach provides the impurity spectral density for all frequencies and coupling strengths. In particular, Hubbard satellites at high energy can be obtained with a good resolution. The main difficulties are the necessary discretisation of the host band hybridised with the impurity and the resolution of sharp spectral features such as the Abrikosov-Suhl resonance.

Analytical and Numerical Treatment of the Mott--Hubbard Insulator in Infinite Dimensions

We calculate the density of states in the half-filled Hubbard model on a Bethe lattice with infinite connectivity. Based on our analytical results to second order in $t/U$, we propose a new `Fixed-Energy Exact Diagonalization' scheme for the numerical study of the Dynamical Mean-Field Theory. Corroborated by results from the Random Dispersion Approximation, we find that the gap opens at $U_{\rm c}=4.43 \pm 0.05$. Moreover, the density of states near the gap increases algebraically as a function of frequency with an exponent $α=1/2$ in the insulating phase. We critically examine other analytical and numerical approaches and specify their merits and limitations when applied to the Mott--Hubbard insulator.
