Delbruck scattering and the g-factor of a bound electron

The leading contribution of the light-by-light scattering effects to g-factor of a bound electron is derived. The corresponding amplitude is expressed in terms of low-energy Delbruck scattering of a virtual photon. The result reads Delta g = (7/216) alpha (Z alpha)^5.

Precision study of positronium and precision tests of the bound state QED

Despite its very short lifetime positronium provides us with a number of accurate tests of the bound state QED. In this note a brief overview of QED theory and precision experiments on the spectrum and annihilation decay of the positronium atom is presented. Special attention is paid to the accuracy of theoretical predictions.

Hyperfine Structure of the Ground and First Excited States in Light Hydrogen-Like Atoms and High-Precision Tests of QED

We consider hyperfine splitting of 1s and, in part, of 2s levels in light hydrogen-like atoms: hydrogen, deuterium, tritium, helium-3 ion, muonium and positronium. We discuss present status of precision theory and experiment for the hfs intervals. We pay a special attention to a specific difference, D_{21} = 8 E_{hfs}(2s) - E_{hfs}(1s), which is known experimentally for hydrogen, deuterium and ^3He^+ ion. The difference is weakly affected by the effects of the nuclear structure and thus may be calculated with a high accuracy. We complete a calculation of the fourth order QED contributions to this difference and present here new results on corrections due to the nuclear effects. Our theoretical predictions appear to be in a fair agreement with available experimental data. Comparison of the experimental data with our examination of D_{21} allows to test the state-dependent sector of theory of the hfs separation of the 1s and 2s levels in the light hydrogen-like atoms up to 10^-8.

Hyperfine structure in hydrogen and helium ion

QED theory of the hyperfine splitting of the $1s$ and $2s$ state in hydrogen isotopes and helium-3 ion is considered. We develop an accurate theory of a specific difference 8E_{HFS}(2s)-E_{HFS}(1s). We take into account fourth order corrections and nuclear structure effects. The theoretical prediction is now of a higher accuracy than the experiment is. The study of the difference provides the most accurate test (on a level of a part in 10^8) of the QED theory of $1s$ HFS up to date. The theory agrees with most of the experimental data.

Muonium hyperfine structure and hadronic effects

A new result for the hadronic vacuum polarization correction to the muonium hyperfine splitting (HFS) is presented: Delta nu(had - vp) = (0.233 +- 0.003) kHz. Compared with previous calculations, the accuracy is improved by using the latest data on e+e- -> hadrons. The status of the QED prediction for HFS is discussed.

2s Hyperfine Structure in Hydrogen Atom and Helium-3 Ion

The usefulness of study of hyperfine splitting in the hydrogen atom is limited on a level of 10 ppm by our knowledge of the proton structure. One way to go beyond 10 ppm is to study a specific difference of the hyperfine structure intervals 8 Delta nu_2 - Delta nu_1. Nuclear effects for are not important this difference and it is of use to study higher-order QED corrections.

Lamb Shift in Light Hydrogen-Like Atoms

Calculation of higher-order two-loop corrections is now a limiting factor in development of the bound state QED theory of the Lamb shift in the hydrogen atom and in precision determination of the Rydberg constant. Progress in the study of light hydrogen-like ions of helium and nitrogen can be helpful to investigate these uncalculated terms experimentally. To do that it is necessary to develop a theory of such ions. We present here a theoretical calculation for low energy levels of helium and nitrogen ions.

Laser spectroscopy of simple atoms and precision tests of bound state QED

We present a brief overview of precision tests of bound state QED and mainly pay our attention to laser spectroscopy as an appropriate tool for these tests. We particularly consider different precision tests of bound state QED theory based on the laser spectroscopy of optical transitions in hydrogen, muonium and positronium and related experiments.

The g Factor of a Bound Electron in a Hydrogen-Like Atom

Recently, a precise measurement on the bound electron g factor in hydrogen-like carbon was performed [1]. We consider the present status of the theory of the g factor of an electron bound in a hydrogen-like atom and discuss new opportunities and possible applications of the recent experiment.

The hydrogen Lamb shift and the proton radius

The Lamb shift measurement and theory are now both a dynamically developing field and we give a review of the current data. Critical comparison of theory and experiment can be done using a value of the proton charge radius and we pay attention to several results of its determination.

Some possibilities for laboratory searches for variations of fundamental constants

We consider different options for the search for possible variations of the fundamental constants. We give a brief overview of the results obtained with several methods. We discuss their advantages and disadvantages with respect to simultaneous variations of all constants in both time and space in the range 10^{8}-10^{10} yr. We also suggest a few possibilities for the laboratory search. Particularly, we propose some experiments with the hyperfine structure of hydrogen, deuterium and ytterbium-171 and of some atoms with a small magnetic moment. Other suggestions are for some measurements of the fine structure associated with the ground state. Special attention is paid to the interpretation of the hfs measurements in terms of variations of the fundamental constants.

Decays of Positronium

We briefly review the theoretical and experimental results concerning decays of positronium. Possible solutions of the "orthopositronium lifetime puzzle" are discussed. Positronium annihilation into neutrinos is examined and disagreement is found with previously published results.

What do we actually know on the proton radius ?

The work is devoted to a consideration of the different determinations of the proton charge radius. It is demonstrated that the results from the elastic electron-proton scattering have to be of a higher uncertainty. A review of the hydrogen Lamb shift measurements and the radius determination from them is also presented.

Complete Result for Positronium Energy Levels at Order alpha^6 m

We have completed theoretical predictions for positronium energy levels through order alpha^6 m by the calculation of the spin independent, radiative recoil correction. This contribution is significant and amounts to 10.64 MHz for the 1S state. We further perform detailed comparison of theoretical predictions to experimental results for 1S-2S and 2S-2P transitions.

Two-body effects in the decay rate of atomic levels

Recoil corrections to the atomic decay rate are considered in the order of Zm/M . The expressions are treated exactly without any expansion over Z alpha. The expressions obtained are valid both for muonic atoms (for which they contribute on the level of a few percent in high Z ions) and for electronic atoms. Explicit results for Lyman-alpha transitions for low-Z of the order (Zm/M)(Z alpha)^2 are also presented.
