Linear progress in fibres

A fibered hyperbolic 3-manifold induces a map from the hyperbolic plane to hyperbolic 3-space, the respective universal covers of the fibre and the manifold. The induced map is an embedding that is exponentially distorted in terms of the individual metrics. In this article, we begin a study of the distortion along typical rays in the fibre. We verify that a typical ray in the hyperbolic plane makes linear progress in the ambient metric in hyperbolic 3-space. We formulate the proof in terms of some soft aspects of the geometry and basic ergodic theory. This enables us to extend the result to analogous contexts that correspond to certain extensions of closed surface groups. These include surface group extensions that are Gromov hyperbolic, the universal curve over a Teichmüller disc, and the extension induced by the Birman exact sequence.

BV solutions for mean curvature flow with constant contact angle: Allen-Cahn approximation and weak-strong uniqueness

We study weak solutions to mean curvature flow satisfying Young's angle condition for general contact angles $α\in (0,π)$. First, we construct BV solutions using the Allen-Cahn approximation with boundary contact energy as proposed by Owen and Sternberg. Second, we prove the weak-strong uniqueness and stability for this solution concept. The main ingredient for both results is a relative energy, which can also be interpreted as a tilt excess.

Convergence rates for the Allen-Cahn equation with boundary contact energy: The non-perturbative regime

We extend the recent rigorous convergence result of Abels and the second author (arXiv preprint 2105.08434) concerning convergence rates for solutions of the Allen-Cahn equation with a nonlinear Robin boundary condition towards evolution by mean curvature flow with constant contact angle. More precisely, in the present work we manage to remove the perturbative assumption on the contact angle being close to ninety degree. We establish under usual double-well type assumptions on the potential and for a certain class of boundary energy densities the sub-optimal convergence rate of order $\smash{\varepsilon^{\frac{1}{2}}}$ for general contact angles $α\in (0,π)$. For a very specific form of the boundary energy density, we even obtain from our methods a sharp convergence rate of order $\varepsilon$; again for general contact angles $α\in (0,π)$. Our proof deviates from the popular strategy based on rigorous asymptotic expansions and stability estimates for the linearized Allen-Cahn operator. Instead, we follow the recent approach by Fischer, Laux and Simon (SIAM J. Math. Anal. 52, 2020), thus relying on a relative entropy technique. We develop a careful adaptation of their approach in order to encode the constant contact angle condition. In fact, we perform this task at the level of the notion of gradient flow calibrations. This concept was recently introduced in the context of weak-strong uniqueness for multiphase mean curvature flow by Fischer, Laux, Simon and the first author (arXiv preprint 2003.05478).

Weak-strong uniqueness for the Navier-Stokes equation for two fluids with ninety degree contact angle and same viscosities

We consider the flow of two viscous and incompressible fluids within a bounded domain modeled by means of a two-phase Navier-Stokes system. The two fluids are assumed to be immiscible, meaning that they are separated by an interface. With respect to the motion of the interface, we consider pure transport by the fluid flow. Along the boundary of the domain, a complete slip boundary condition for the fluid velocities and a constant ninety degree contact angle condition for the interface are assumed. The main result of the present work establishes in 2D a weak-strong uniqueness result in terms of a varifold solution concept à la Abels (Interfaces Free Bound. 9, 2007). The proof is based on a relative entropy argument. More precisely, we extend ideas from the recent work of Fischer and the first author (Arch. Ration. Mech. Anal. 236, 2020) to incorporate the contact angle condition. To focus on the effects of the necessarily singular geometry, we work for simplicity in the regime of same viscosities for the two fluids.

The local structure of the energy landscape in multiphase mean curvature flow: Weak-strong uniqueness and stability of evolutions

We prove that in the absence of topological changes, the notion of BV solutions to planar multiphase mean curvature flow does not allow for a mechanism for (unphysical) non-uniqueness. Our approach is based on the local structure of the energy landscape near a classical evolution by mean curvature. Mean curvature flow being the gradient flow of the surface energy functional, we develop a gradient-flow analogue of the notion of calibrations. Just like the existence of a calibration guarantees that one has reached a global minimum in the energy landscape, the existence of a "gradient flow calibration" ensures that the route of steepest descent in the energy landscape is unique and stable.

Weak-strong uniqueness for the mean curvature flow of double bubbles

We derive a weak-strong uniqueness principle for BV solutions to multiphase mean curvature flow of triple line clusters in three dimensions. Our proof is based on the explicit construction of a gradient-flow calibration in the sense of the recent work of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478v2] for any such cluster. This extends the two-dimensional construction to the three-dimensional case of surfaces meeting along triple junctions.

A new varifold solution concept for mean curvature flow: Convergence of the Allen-Cahn equation and weak-strong uniqueness

We propose a new weak solution concept for (two-phase) mean curvature flow which enjoys both (unconditional) existence and (weak-strong) uniqueness properties. These solutions are evolving varifolds, just as in Brakke's formulation, but are coupled to the phase volumes by a simple transport equation. First, we show that, in the exact same setup as in Ilmanen's proof [J. Differential Geom. 38, 417-461, (1993)], any limit point of solutions to the Allen-Cahn equation is a varifold solution in our sense. Second, we prove that any calibrated flow in the sense of Fischer et al. [arXiv:2003.05478] - and hence any classical solution to mean curvature flow - is unique in the class of our new varifold solutions. This is in sharp contrast to the case of Brakke flows, which a priori may disappear at any given time and are therefore fatally non-unique. Finally, we propose an extension of the solution concept to the multi-phase case which is at least guaranteed to satisfy a weak-strong uniqueness principle.

Foliations from left orders

We describe a construction which takes as an input a left order of the fundamental group of a manifold, and outputs a (singular) foliation of this manifold which is analogous to a taut foliation. We investigate this construction in detail in dimension $2$, and exhibit connections to various problems in dimension $3$.

Rotation sets and actions on curves

We study the action of the homeomorphism group of a surface $S$ on the fine curve graph ${\mathcal C }^\dagger(S)$. While the definition of $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ parallels the classical curve graph for mapping class groups, we show that the dynamics of the action of ${\mathrm{Homeo}}(S)$ on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ is much richer: homeomorphisms induce parabolic isometries in addition to elliptics and hyperbolics, and all positive reals are realized as asymptotic translation lengths. When the surface $S$ is a torus, we relate the dynamics of the action of a homeomorphism on $\mathcal{C}^\dagger(S)$ to the dynamics of its action on the torus via the classical theory of rotation sets. We characterize homeomorphisms acting hyperbolically, show asymptotic translation length provides a lower bound for the area of the rotation set, and, while no characterisation purely in terms of rotation sets is possible, we give sufficient conditions for elements to be elliptic or parabolic.

(Un)distorted stabilisers in the handlebody group

We study geometric properties of stabilisers in the handlebody group. We find that stabilisers of meridians are undistorted, while stabilisers of primitive curves or annuli are exponentially distorted for large enough genus.

Strong Haken via Sphere Complexes

We give a short proof of Scharlemann's Strong Haken Theorem for closed $3$-manifolds (and manifolds with spherical boundary). As an application, we also show that given a decomposing sphere $R$ for a $3$-manifold $M$ that splits off an $S^2 \times S^1$ summand, any Heegaard splitting of $M$ restricts to the standard Heegaard splitting on the summand.

Corrector estimates for higher-order linearizations in stochastic homogenization of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations

Corrector estimates constitute a key ingredient in the derivation of optimal convergence rates via two-scale expansion techniques in homogenization theory of random uniformly elliptic equations. The present work follows up - in terms of corrector estimates - on the recent work of Fischer and Neukamm (arXiv:1908.02273) which provides a quantitative stochastic homogenization theory of nonlinear uniformly elliptic equations under a spectral gap assumption. We establish optimal-order estimates (with respect to the scaling in the ratio between the microscopic and the macroscopic scale) for higher-order linearized correctors. A rather straightforward consequence of the corrector estimates is the higher-order regularity of the associated homogenized monotone operator.

Quasi-morphisms on surface diffeomorphism groups

We show that the identity component of the group of diffeomorphisms of a closed oriented surface of positive genus admits many unbounded quasi-morphisms. As a corollary, we also deduce that this group is not uniformly perfect and its fragmentation norm is unbounded, answering a question of Burago--Ivanov--Polterovich. As a key tool we construct a hyperbolic graph on which these groups act, which is the analog of the curve graph for the mapping class group.

Finite time extinction for the 1D stochastic porous medium equation with transport noise

We establish finite time extinction with probability one for weak solutions of the Cauchy-Dirichlet problem for the 1D stochastic porous medium equation with Stratonovich transport noise and compactly supported smooth initial datum. Heuristically, this is expected to hold because Brownian motion has average spread rate $O(t^\frac{1}{2})$ whereas the support of solutions to the deterministic PME grows only with rate $O(t^{\frac{1}{m{+}1}})$. The rigorous proof relies on a contraction principle up to time-dependent shift for Wong-Zakai type approximations, the transformation to a deterministic PME with two copies of a Brownian path as the lateral boundary, and techniques from the theory of viscosity solutions.
