Weak-strong uniqueness for the Navier-Stokes equation for two fluids with surface tension

In the present work, we consider the evolution of two fluids separated by a sharp interface in the presence of surface tension - like, for example, the evolution of oil bubbles in water. Our main result is a weak-strong uniqueness principle for the corresponding free boundary problem for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation: As long as a strong solution exists, any varifold solution must coincide with it. In particular, in the absence of physical singularities the concept of varifold solutions - whose global in time existence has been shown by Abels [2] for general initial data - does not introduce a mechanism for non-uniqueness. The key ingredient of our approach is the construction of a relative entropy functional capable of controlling the interface error. If the viscosities of the two fluids do not coincide, even for classical (strong) solutions the gradient of the velocity field becomes discontinuous at the interface, introducing the need for a careful additional adaption of the relative entropy.

The Geometry of the Handlebody Groups II: Dehn functions

We show that the Dehn function of the handlebody group is exponential in any genus $g\geq 3$. On the other hand, we show that the handlebody group of genus $2$ is cubical, biautomatic, and therefore has a quadratic Dehn function.

Modelled distributions of Triebel-Lizorkin type

In order to provide a local description of a regular function in a small neighbourhood of a point $x$, it is sufficient by Taylor's theorem to know the value of the function as well as all of its derivatives up to the required order at the point $x$ itself. In other words, one could say that a regular function is locally modelled by the set of polynomials. The theory of regularity structures due to Hairer generalizes this observation and provides an abstract setup, which in the application of singular SPDE extends the set of polynomials by functionals constructed from, e.g., white noise. In this context, the notion of Taylor polynomials is lifted to the notion of so-called modelled distributions. The celebrated reconstruction theorem, which in turn was inspired by Gubinelli's sewing lemma, is of paramount importance for the theory. It enables to reconstruct a modelled distribution as a true distribution on $R^d$ which is locally approximated by this extended set of models or "monomials". In the original work of Hairer, the error is measured based on Hölder norms. This was then generalized to the whole scale of Besov spaces by Hairer and Labbé in subsequent papers. It is the aim of this work to adapt the analytic part of the theory of regularity structures to the scale of Triebel-Lizorkin spaces.

Nielsen Realisation by Gluing: Limit Groups and Free Products

We generalise the Karrass-Pietrowski-Solitar and the Nielsen realisation theorems from the setting of free groups to that of free products. As a result, we obtain a fixed point theorem for finite groups of outer automorphisms acting on the relative free splitting complex of Handel--Mosher and on the outer space of a free product of Guirardel--Levitt, as well as a relative version of the Nielsen realisation theorem, which in the case of free groups answers a question of Karen Vogtmann. We also prove Nielsen realisation for limit groups, and as a byproduct obtain a new proof that limit groups are CAT($0$). The proofs rely on a new version of Stallings' theorem on groups with at least two ends, in which some control over the behaviour of virtual free factors is gained.

Stability in Outer Space

We characterize strongly Morse quasi-geodesics in Outer space as quasi-geodesics which project to quasi-geodesics in the free factor graph. We define convex cocompact subgroups of $Out(F_n)$ as subgroups such that an orbit map in the free factor graph is a quasi-isometric embedding, and we characterize such groups via their action on Outer space in a way which resembles the characterization of convex cocompact subgroups of mapping class groups.

Finite covers of graphs, their primitive homology, and representation theory

Consider a finite, regular cover $Y\to X$ of finite graphs, with associated deck group $G$. We relate the topology of the cover to the structure of $H_1(Y;\mathbb{C})$ as a $G$-representation. A central object in this study is the {\em primitive homology} group $H_1^{\mathrm{prim}}(Y;\mathbb{C})\subseteq H_1(Y;\mathbb{C})$, which is the span of homology classes represented by components of lifts of primitive elements of $π_1(X)$. This circle of ideas relates combinatorial group theory, surface topology, and representation theory.

Rigidity and Flexibility for Handlebody Groups

We show that finite index subgroups of the handlebody group are rigid in their ambient mapping class group: any injective map of a finite index subgroup of the genus $g$ handlebody group into the genus $g$ mapping class group is conjugation by a mapping class group element. On the other hand, we construct an injection of the genus $g$ handlebody group into a genus $h>g$ mapping class group which is not conjugate into a handlebody group.

Nielsen realisation for untwisted automorphisms of right-angled Artin groups

We prove Nielsen realisation for finite subgroups of the groups of untwisted outer automorphisms of RAAGs in the following sense: given any graph $Γ$, and any finite group $G\leqslant \mathrm{U}^0(A_Γ) \leqslant \mathrm{Out}^0(A_Γ)$, we find a non-positively curved cube complex with fundamental group $A_Γ$ on which $G$ acts by isometries, realising the action on $A_Γ$.

Moving homology classes in finite covers of graphs

Let $Y\to X$ be a finite normal cover of a wedge of $n\geq 3$ circles. We prove that for any $v\neq 0\in H_1(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ there exists a lift $\widetilde{F}$ to $Y$ of a homotopy equivalence $F:X\to X$ so that the set of iterates $\{\widetilde{F}^d(v): d\in \mathbb{Z}\}\subseteq H_1(Y;\mathbb{Q})$ is infinite. The main achievement of this paper is the use of representation theory to prove the existence of a purely topological object that seems to be inaccessible via topology.

Spheres and Projections for $\mathrm{Out}(F_n)$

The outer automorphism group Out(F_2g) of a free group on 2g generators naturally contains the mapping class group of a punctured surface as a subgroup. We define a subsurface projection of the sphere complex of the connected sum of n copies of S^1 x S^2 into the arc complex of the surface and use this to show that this subgroup is a Lipschitz retract of Out(F_2g). We also use subsurface projections to give a simple proof of a result of Handel and Mosher [HM10] stating that stabilizers of conjugacy classes of free splittings and corank 1 free factors in a free group Fn are Lipschitz retracts of Out(F_n).

Slim unicorns and uniform hyperbolicity for arc graphs and curve graphs

We describe unicorn paths in the arc graph and show that they form 1-slim triangles and are invariant under taking subpaths. We deduce that all arc graphs are 7-hyperbolic. Considering the same paths in the arc and curve graph, this also shows that all curve graphs are 17-hyperbolic, including closed surfaces.

Realisation and dismantlability

We study dismantling properties of the arc, disc and sphere graphs. We prove that any finite subgroup H of the mapping class group of a surface with punctures, the handlebody group, or Out(F_n) fixes a filling (resp. simple) clique in the appropriate graph. We deduce realisation theorems, in particular the Nielsen Realisation Problem in the case of a nonempty set of punctures. We also prove that infinite H have either empty or contractible fixed point sets in the corresponding complexes. Furthermore, we show that their spines are classifying spaces for proper actions for mapping class groups and Out(F_n).

The geometry of the handlebody groups I: Distortion

We show that the mapping class group of a handlebody of genus at least 2 (with any number of marked points or spots) is exponentially distorted in the mapping class group of its boundary surface. The same holds true for solid tori with at least two marked points or spots.

Introduction to representation theory

These are lecture notes that arose from a representation theory course given by the first author to the remaining six authors in March 2004 within the framework of the Clay Mathematics Institute Research Academy for high school students, and its extended version given by the first author to MIT undergraduate math students in the Fall of 2008. The notes cover a number of standard topics in representation theory of groups, Lie algebras, and quivers, and contain many problems and exercises. They should be accessible to students with a strong background in linear algebra and a basic knowledge of abstract algebra, and may be used for an undergraduate or introductory graduate course in representation theory.
