Ordered phase and phase transitions in the three-dimensional generalized six-state clock model

We study the three-dimensional generalized six-state clock model at values of the energy parameters, at which the system is considered to have the same behavior as the stacked triangular antiferromagnetic Ising model and the three-state antiferromagnetic Potts model. First, we investigate ordered phases by using the Monte Carlo twist method (MCTM). We confirmed the existence of an incompletely ordered phase (IOP1) at intermediate temperature, besides the completely ordered phase (COP) at low-temperature. In this intermediate phase, two neighboring states of the six-state model mix, while one of them is selected in the low temperature phase. We examine the fluctuation the mixing rate of the two states in IOP1 and clarify that the mixing rate is very stable around 1:1. The high temperature phase transition is investigated by using non-equilibrium relaxation method (NERM). We estimate the critical exponents beta=0.34(1) and nu=0.66(4). These values are consistent with the 3D-XY universality class. The low temperature phase transition is found to be of first-order by using MCTM and the finite-size-scaling analysis.

Frequency Dependence of Quantum Localization in a Periodically Driven System

We study the quantum localization phenomena for a random matrix model belonging to the Gaussian orthogonal ensemble (GOE). An oscillating external field is applied on the system. After the transient time evolution, energy is saturated to various values depending on the frequencies. We investigate the frequency dependence of the saturated energy. This dependence cannot be explained by a naive picture of successive independent Landau-Zener transitions at avoided level crossing points. The effect of quantum interference is essential. We define the number of Floquet states which have large overlap with the initial state, and calculate its frequency dependence. The number of Floquet states shows approximately linear dependence on the frequency, when the frequency is small. Comparing the localization length in Floquet states and that in energy states from the viewpoint of the Anderson localization, we conclude that the Landau-Zener picture works for the local transition processes between levels.

Spin-Peierls transition of the first order in S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains

We investigate a one-dimensional S=1 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model coupled to a lattice distortion by a quantum Monte Carlo method. Investigating the ground state energy of the static bond-alternating chain, we find that the instability to a dimerized chain depends on the value of the spin-phonon coupling, unlike the case of S=1/2. The spin state is the dimer state or the uniform Haldane state depending on whether the lattice distorts or not, respectively. At an intermediate value of the spin-phonon coupling, we find the first-order transition between the two states. We also find the coexistence of the two states.

Magnetization Process of Nanoscale Iron Cluster

Low-temperature magnetization process of the nanoscale iron cluster in linearly sweeped fields is investigated by a numerical analysis of time-dependent Schr$\ddot{\rm o}$dinger equation and the quantum master equation. We introduce an effective basis method extracting important states, by which we can obtain the magnetization process effectively. We investigate the structure of the field derivative of the magnetization. We find out that the antisymmetric interaction determined from the lattice structure reproduces well the experimental results of the iron magnets and that this interaction plays an important role in the iron cluster. Deviations from the adiabatic process are also studied. In the fast sweeping case, our calculations indicate that the nonadiabatic transition dominantly occurs at the level crossing for the lowest field. In slow sweeping case, due to the influence of the thermal environment to the spin system, the field derivative of the magnetization shows an asymmetric behavior, the magnetic F$\ddot{\rm o}$hn effect, which explains the substructure of the experimental results in the pulsed field.

Programming physical realizations of quantum computers

We study effects of the physical realization of quantum computers on their logical operation. Through simulation of physical models of quantum computer hardware, we analyze the difficulties that are encountered in programming physical realizations of quantum computers. Examples of logically identical implementations of the controlled-NOT operation and Grover's database search algorithm are used to demonstrate that the results of a quantum computation are unstable with respect to the physical realization of the quantum computer. We discuss the origin of these instabilities and discuss possibilities to overcome this, for practical purposes, fundamental limitation of quantum computers.

Noise effect on the nonadiabatic transition and correction to the tunneling energy gap estimated by the Landau-Zener-Stuckelberg formula

We study effect of noise on the tunneling process of the magnetization in a sweeping field from the viewpoint of the nonadiabatic transition. The tunneling probability depends on the properties of the noise, e.g. the direction, the amplitude, and the relaxation time of the autocorrelation function. We investigate the tunneling process in the presence of noise by solving the time-dependent Schr$\rm{\ddot{o}}$dinger equation numerically, and analyze its parameter dependence. We estimate the effective tunneling gap making use of the Landau-Zener-St$\rm{\ddot{u}}$ckelberg (LZS) formula. The dependence of the gap on the sweeping velocity reproduces the corresponding experimental data qualitatively. For fast sweeping field the estimated gap has no velocity dependence and this gap seems to give the true gap. We, however, show that a correction for the estimated energy gap is necessary and we propose an correction formula.

Dynamical process for switching dynamics between metastable ordered magnetic state and nonmagnetic ground state in photoinduced phase transition

We propose a dynamical mechanism of the two-way switching between the metastable state and the stable state, which has been found in experiments of photoinduced reversible magnetization and photoinduced structural phase transition. We find that the two-way switching with a non-symmetry breaking perturbation such as illumination is possible only in systems with appropriate parameters. We make it clear that the existence of two time scales in the dynamical process is important for the two-way switching.

Temperature Dependence of Spin and Bond Ordering in a Spin-Peierls System

We investigate thermodynamic properties of a one-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model coupled to a lattice distortion by a quantum Monte Carlo method. In particular we study how spin and lattice dimerize as a function of the temperature, which gives a fundamental process of the spin-Peierls transition in higher dimensions. The degree of freedom of the lattice is taken into account adiabatically and the thermal distribution of the lattice distortion is obtained by the thermal bath algorithm. We find that the dimerization develops as the temperature decreases and it converges to the value of the dimerization of the ground state at T=0. Furthermore we find that the coupling constants of spins fluctuate quite largly at high temperature and there thermodynamic properties deviate from those of the uniform chain. Doping of non-magnetic impurities causes cut of the chain into short chains with open boundary. We investigate thermodynamic properties of open chains taking relaxation of the lattice into consideration. We find that strong bonds locate at the edges and a defect of the bond alternation appears in the chain with odd number of sites, which causes enhancement of the staggered magnetic order. We find a spreaded staggered structure which indicates that the defect moves diffusively in the chain even at very low temperature.

Feedback Effect on Landau-Zener-Stueckelberg Transitions in Magnetic Systems

We examine the effect of the dynamics of the internal magnetic field on the staircase magnetization curves observed in large-spin molecular magnets. We show that the size of the magnetization steps depends sensitively on the intermolecular interactions, even if these are very small compared to the intra-molecular couplings.

Nonexponential Relaxation of Magnetization at the Resonant Tunneling Point under a Fluctuating Random Noise

Nonexponential relaxation of magnetization at resonant tunneling points of nanoscale molecular magnets is interpreted to be an effect of fluctuating random field around the applied field. We demonstrate such relaxation in Langevin equation analysis and clarify how the initial relaxation (square-root time) changes to the exponential decay. The scaling properties of the relaxation are also discussed.

Magnetic Foehn Effect in Nonadiabatic Transition

The magnetization curves as a response of sweeping magnetic field in the thermal environment are investigated using the quantum master equation. In a slow velocity region where the system almost behaves adiabatically, the magnetic plateau appears which has been observed in the recent experiment of V$_{15}$ [ Phys. Rev. Lett. (2000)]. We investigate its mechanism and propose that this phenomenon is quite universal in the quasi-adiabatic transition with small inflow of the heat, and we call it 'Magnetic Foehn Effect'. We observe the crossover between this mechanism and the Landau-Zener-Stückelberg mechanism changing the velocity. Some experiment is proposed to clarify the inherent mechanism of this effect.

Quantum Dynamics in Nanoscale Magnets in Dissipative Environments

In discrete energy structure of nanoscale magnets, nonadiabatic transitions at avoided level crossings lead to fundamental processes of dynamics of magnetizations. The thermal environment causes dissipative effects on these processes. In this paper we review the features of the nonadiabatic transition and the influence of the thermal environment. In particular we discuss the temperature independent stepwise structure of magnetization at very low temperatures (deceptive nonadiabatic transition), the alternate enhancement of relaxation in the sequence of resonant tunneling points (parity effects), and processes caused by combinations of nonadiabatic transitions and disturbance due to external noises.

Parity Effect in the Resonant Tunneling

A mechanism of the parity effect in the thermally assisted resonant tunneling is proposed in the view point of nonadiabatic transitions of thermally excited states. In this mechanism, alternating enhancement of the relaxation is naturally understood as a general property of quantum relaxation of uniaxial magnets at finite temperatures where appreciable populations are pumped up to excited states. It is also found that the enhanced sequence depends on the sweeping rate of the field.

Existence of Saturated Ferromagnetic and Spiral States in 1D Lieb-Ferrimagnetic Models away from Half-Filling

In order to study conditions for the appearance of ferromagnetism in a wide filling region, we investigate numerically three types of one-dimensional Lieb-ferrimagnetic Hubbard models: a periodic diamond (PD) chain, a periodic alternately-attached leg (PAAL) chain and an open diamond (OD) chain. All of these models have a flat band (or equivalently, degenerate single-electron eigenvalues). The PD and OD chains commonly have a local-loop structure. Nagaoka's theorem holds only in the PD chain. At half-filling, it have been rigorously proven that all of these models are ferrimagnet. Away from half-filling, however, quite different magnetic properties are found. In the fillings 1/3< rho_e <1/2, the ground state of the PD chain for a infinitely-large U is the extended ferromagnetic state, that is, the saturated ferromagnetic state or the spiral state for odd or even number of electrons, respectively. In the PAAL chain, on the other hand, there is no magnetic order. Thus, the flat band is found to be not a sufficient condition of the extended ferromagnetic state. We find, moreover, that the saturated ferromagnetism appears in the OD chain, although the Nagaoka theorem does not hold on this chain. This indicates that the local-loop structure plays an important role on the appearance of the extended ferromagnetic state.

Quantum Monte Carlo Study on Magnetization Processes

A quantum Monte Carlo method combining update of the loop algorithm with the global flip of the world line is proposed as an efficient method to study the magnetization process in an external field, which has been difficult because of inefficiency of the update of the total magnetization. The method is demonstrated in the one dimensional antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model and the trimer model. We attempted various other Monte Carlo algorithms to study systems in the external field and compared their efficiency.

Local magnetic structure due to inhomogeneity of interaction in S=1/2 antiferromagnetic chain

We study the magnetic properties of $S=1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chains with inhomogeneity of interaction. Using a quantum Monte Carlo method and an exact diagonalization method, we study bond-impurity effect in the uniform $S=1/2$ chain and also in the bond-alternating chain. Here `bond impurity' means a bond with strength different from those in the bulk or a defect in the alternating order. Local magnetic structures induced by bond impurities are investigated both in the ground state and at finite temperatures, calculating the local magnetization, the local susceptibility and the local field susceptibility. We also investigate the force acting between bond impurities and find the force generally attractive.

Temperature dependence of local states due to S=1/2 impurities and their correlation in a S=1 Heisenberg chain

We study the temperature dependence of the low temperature spin configurations, investigating the magnetization profile of the local states due to the impurities and the two point correlation function centered in one of the impurities. This correlation is found to be weak against temperature effects although the magnetization profile in the triplet state is visible up to higher temperatures. Here we introduce a loop cluster quantum Monte-Carlo method with a fixed magnetization Mz in order to study the correlations in the ground state of a given value of Mz. From the population distribution of magnetization, the very small energy gap between the quasi degenerate states due to the impurities is obtained.
