Optofluidic transport and particle trapping using an all-dielectric quasi-BIC metasurface

Manipulating fluids by light at the nanoscale has been a long-sought-after goal for lab-on-a-chip applications. Plasmonic heating has been demonstrated to control microfluidic dynamics due to the enhanced and confined light absorption from the intrinsic losses of metals. Dielectrics, counterpart of metals, is used to avoid undesired thermal effects due to its negligible light absorption. Here, we report an innovative optofluidic system that leverages a quasi-BIC driven all-dielectric metasurface to achieve nanoscale control of temperature and fluid motion. Our experiments show that suspended particles down to 200 nanometers can be rapidly aggregated to the center of the illuminated metasurface with a velocity of tens of micrometers per second, and up to millimeter-scale particle transport is demonstrated. The strong electromagnetic field enhancement of the quasi-BIC resonance can facilitate increasing the flow velocity up to 3-times compared with the off-resonant situation. We also experimentally investigate the dynamics of particle aggregation with respect to laser wavelength and power. A physical model is presented to elucidate the phenomena and surfactants are added to the particle colloid to validate the model. Our study demonstrates the application of the recently emerged all-dielectric thermonanophotonics in dealing with functional liquids and opens new frontiers in harnessing non-plasmonic nanophotonics to manipulate microfluidic dynamics. Moreover, the synergistic effects of optofluidics and high-Q all-dielectric nanostructures can hold enormous potential in high-sensitivity biosensing applications.

DeepNoise: Signal and Noise Disentanglement based on Classifying Fluorescent Microscopy Images via Deep Learning

The high-content image-based assay is commonly leveraged for identifying the phenotypic impact of genetic perturbations in biology field. However, a persistent issue remains unsolved during experiments: the interferential technical noise caused by systematic errors (e.g., temperature, reagent concentration, and well location) is always mixed up with the real biological signals, leading to misinterpretation of any conclusion drawn. Here, we show a mean teacher based deep learning model (DeepNoise) that can disentangle biological signals from the experimental noise. Specifically, we aim to classify the phenotypic impact of 1,108 different genetic perturbations screened from 125,510 fluorescent microscopy images, which are totally unrecognizable by human eye. We validate our model by participating in the Recursion Cellular Image Classification Challenge, and our proposed method achieves an extremely high classification score (Acc: 99.596%), ranking the 2nd place among 866 participating groups. This promising result indicates the successful separation of biological and technical factors, which might help decrease the cost of treatment development and expedite the drug discovery process.

A Deep Learning Framework for Nuclear Segmentation and Classification in Histopathological Images

Nucleus segmentation and classification are the prerequisites in the workflow of digital pathology processing. However, it is very challenging due to its high-level heterogeneity and wide variations. This work proposes a deep neural network to simultaneously achieve nuclear classification and segmentation, which is designed using a unified framework with three different branches, including segmentation, HoVer mapping, and classification. The segmentation branch aims to generate the boundaries of each nucleus. The HoVer branch calculates the horizontal and vertical distances of nuclear pixels to their centres of mass. The nuclear classification branch is used to distinguish the class of pixels inside the nucleus obtained from segmentation.

Hyperbolic Cosine Transformer for LiDAR 3D Object Detection

Recently, Transformer has achieved great success in computer vision. However, it is constrained because the spatial and temporal complexity grows quadratically with the number of large points in 3D object detection applications. Previous point-wise methods are suffering from time consumption and limited receptive fields to capture information among points. In this paper, we propose a two-stage hyperbolic cosine transformer (ChTR3D) for 3D object detection from LiDAR point clouds. The proposed ChTR3D refines proposals by applying cosh-attention in linear computation complexity to encode rich contextual relationships among points. The cosh-attention module reduces the space and time complexity of the attention operation. The traditional softmax operation is replaced by non-negative ReLU activation and hyperbolic-cosine-based operator with re-weighting mechanism. Extensive experiments on the widely used KITTI dataset demonstrate that, compared with vanilla attention, the cosh-attention significantly improves the inference speed with competitive performance. Experiment results show that, among two-stage state-of-the-art methods using point-level features, the proposed ChTR3D is the fastest one.

Anti-Zeno purification of spin baths by quantum probe measurements

The quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno paradigms have thus far addressed the evolution control of a quantum system coupled to an immutable bath via non-selective measurements performed at appropriate intervals. We fundamentally modify these paradigms by introducing, theoretically and experimentally, the concept of controlling the bath state via selective measurements of the system (a qubit). We show that at intervals corresponding to the anti-Zeno regime of the system-bath exchange, a sequence of measurements has strongly correlated outcomes. These correlations can dramatically enhance the bath-state purity and yield a low-entropy steady state of the bath. The purified bath state persists long after the measurements are completed. Such purification enables the exploitation of spin baths as long-lived quantum memories or as quantum-enhanced sensors. The experiment involved a repeatedly probed defect center dephased by a nuclear spin bath in a diamond at low-temperature.

LPFS: Learnable Polarizing Feature Selection for Click-Through Rate Prediction

In industry, feature selection is a standard but necessary step to search for an optimal set of informative feature fields for efficient and effective training of deep Click-Through Rate (CTR) models. Most previous works measure the importance of feature fields by using their corresponding continuous weights from the model, then remove the feature fields with small weight values. However, removing many features that correspond to small but not exact zero weights will inevitably hurt model performance and not be friendly to hot-start model training. There is also no theoretical guarantee that the magnitude of weights can represent the importance, thus possibly leading to sub-optimal results if using these methods. To tackle this problem, we propose a novel Learnable Polarizing Feature Selection (LPFS) method using a smoothed-$\ell^0$ function in literature. Furthermore, we extend LPFS to LPFS++ by our newly designed smoothed-$\ell^0$-liked function to select a more informative subset of features. LPFS and LPFS++ can be used as gates inserted at the input of the deep network to control the active and inactive state of each feature. When training is finished, some gates are exact zero, while others are around one, which is particularly favored by the practical hot-start training in the industry, due to no damage to the model performance before and after removing the features corresponding to exact-zero gates. Experiments show that our methods outperform others by a clear margin, and have achieved great A/B test results in KuaiShou Technology.

Microscopic study of optically-stable, coherent color centers in diamond generated by high-temperature annealing

Single color centers in solid have emerged as promising physical platforms for quantum information science. Creating these centers with excellent quantum properties is a key foundation for further technological developments. In particular, the microscopic understanding of the spin bath environments is the key to engineer color centers for quantum control. In this work, we propose and demonstrate a distinct high-temperature annealing (HTA) approach for creating high-quality nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers in implantation-free diamonds. Simultaneously using the created NV centers as probes for their local environment we verify that no damage was microscopically induced by the HTA. Nearly all single NV centers created in ultra-low-nitrogen-concentration membranes possess stable and Fourier-transform-limited optical spectra. Furthermore, HTA strongly reduces noise sources naturally grown in ensemble samples, and leads to more than three-fold improvements of decoherence time and sensitivity. We also verify that the vacancy activation and defect reformation, especially H3 and P1 centers, can explain the reconfiguration between spin baths and color centers. This novel approach will become a powerful tool in vacancy-based quantum technology.

FINT: Field-aware INTeraction Neural Network For CTR Prediction

As a critical component for online advertising and marking, click-through rate (CTR) prediction has draw lots of attentions from both industry and academia field. Recently, the deep learning has become the mainstream methodological choice for CTR. Despite of sustainable efforts have been made, existing approaches still pose several challenges. On the one hand, high-order interaction between the features is under-explored. On the other hand, high-order interactions may neglect the semantic information from the low-order fields. In this paper, we proposed a novel prediction method, named FINT, that employs the Field-aware INTeraction layer which captures high-order feature interactions while retaining the low-order field information. To empirically investigate the effectiveness and robustness of the FINT, we perform extensive experiments on the three realistic databases: KDD2012, Criteo and Avazu. The obtained results demonstrate that the FINT can significantly improve the performance compared to the existing methods, without increasing the amount of computation required. Moreover, the proposed method brought about 2.72\% increase to the advertising revenue of a big online video app through A/B testing. To better promote the research in CTR field, we released our code as well as reference implementation at: https://github.com/zhishan01/FINT.

Exploring Runtime Decision Support for Trauma Resuscitation

AI-based recommender systems have been successfully applied in many domains (e.g., e-commerce, feeds ranking). Medical experts believe that incorporating such methods into a clinical decision support system may help reduce medical team errors and improve patient outcomes during treatment processes (e.g., trauma resuscitation, surgical processes). Limited research, however, has been done to develop automatic data-driven treatment decision support. We explored the feasibility of building a treatment recommender system to provide runtime next-minute activity predictions. The system uses patient context (e.g., demographics and vital signs) and process context (e.g., activities) to continuously predict activities that will be performed in the next minute. We evaluated our system on a pre-recorded dataset of trauma resuscitation and conducted an ablation study on different model variants. The best model achieved an average F1-score of 0.67 for 61 activity types. We include medical team feedback and discuss the future work.

SimCC: a Simple Coordinate Classification Perspective for Human Pose Estimation

The 2D heatmap-based approaches have dominated Human Pose Estimation (HPE) for years due to high performance. However, the long-standing quantization error problem in the 2D heatmap-based methods leads to several well-known drawbacks: 1) The performance for the low-resolution inputs is limited; 2) To improve the feature map resolution for higher localization precision, multiple costly upsampling layers are required; 3) Extra post-processing is adopted to reduce the quantization error. To address these issues, we aim to explore a brand new scheme, called \textit{SimCC}, which reformulates HPE as two classification tasks for horizontal and vertical coordinates. The proposed SimCC uniformly divides each pixel into several bins, thus achieving \emph{sub-pixel} localization precision and low quantization error. Benefiting from that, SimCC can omit additional refinement post-processing and exclude upsampling layers under certain settings, resulting in a more simple and effective pipeline for HPE. Extensive experiments conducted over COCO, CrowdPose, and MPII datasets show that SimCC outperforms heatmap-based counterparts, especially in low-resolution settings by a large margin.

Monitoring AGNs with H$β$ Asymmetry. III. Long-term Reverberation Mapping Results of 15 Palomar-Green Quasars

In this third paper of the series reporting on the reverberation mapping (RM) campaign of active galactic nuclei with asymmetric H$β$ emission-line profiles, we present results for 15 Palomar-Green (PG) quasars using spectra obtained between the end of 2016 to May 2021. This campaign combines long time spans with relatively high cadence. For 8 objects, both the time lags obtained from the entire light curves and the measurements from individual observing seasons are provided. Reverberation mapping of 9 of our targets has been attempted for the first time, while the results for 6 others can be compared with previous campaigns. We measure the H$β$ time lags over periods of years and estimate their black hole masses. The long duration of the campaign enables us to investigate their broad line region (BLR) geometry and kinematics for different years by using velocity-resolved lags, which demonstrate signatures of diverse BLR geometry and kinematics. The BLR geometry and kinematics of individual objects are discussed. In this sample, the BLR kinematics of Keplerian/virialized motion and inflow is more common than outflow.

ET White Paper: To Find the First Earth 2.0

We propose to develop a wide-field and ultra-high-precision photometric survey mission, temporarily named "Earth 2.0 (ET)". This mission is designed to measure, for the first time, the occurrence rate and the orbital distributions of Earth-sized planets. ET consists of seven 30cm telescopes, to be launched to the Earth-Sun's L2 point. Six of these are transit telescopes with a field of view of 500 square degrees. Staring in the direction that encompasses the original Kepler field for four continuous years, this monitoring will return tens of thousands of transiting planets, including the elusive Earth twins orbiting solar-type stars. The seventh telescope is a 30cm microlensing telescope that will monitor an area of 4 square degrees toward the galactic bulge. This, combined with simultaneous ground-based KMTNet observations, will measure masses for hundreds of long-period and free-floating planets. Together, the transit and the microlensing telescopes will revolutionize our understandings of terrestrial planets across a large swath of orbital distances and free space. In addition, the survey data will also facilitate studies in the fields of asteroseismology, Galactic archeology, time-domain sciences, and black holes in binaries.

Nuclear Norm Maximization Based Curiosity-Driven Learning

To handle the sparsity of the extrinsic rewards in reinforcement learning, researchers have proposed intrinsic reward which enables the agent to learn the skills that might come in handy for pursuing the rewards in the future, such as encouraging the agent to visit novel states. However, the intrinsic reward can be noisy due to the undesirable environment's stochasticity and directly applying the noisy value predictions to supervise the policy is detrimental to improve the learning performance and efficiency. Moreover, many previous studies employ $\ell^2$ norm or variance to measure the exploration novelty, which will amplify the noise due to the square operation. In this paper, we address aforementioned challenges by proposing a novel curiosity leveraging the nuclear norm maximization (NNM), which can quantify the novelty of exploring the environment more accurately while providing high-tolerance to the noise and outliers. We conduct extensive experiments across a variety of benchmark environments and the results suggest that NNM can provide state-of-the-art performance compared with previous curiosity methods. On 26 Atari games subset, when trained with only intrinsic reward, NNM achieves a human-normalized score of 1.09, which doubles that of competitive intrinsic rewards-based approaches. Our code will be released publicly to enhance the reproducibility.

Moreover, we construct a map from local Hilbert functor to local cohomology. With suitable assumptions, we use this map to answer a question of Bloch on constructing a natural transformation from local Hilbert functor to cohomological Chow groups.

Multi-task Pre-training Language Model for Semantic Network Completion

Semantic networks, such as the knowledge graph, can represent the knowledge leveraging the graph structure. Although the knowledge graph shows promising values in natural language processing, it suffers from incompleteness. This paper focuses on knowledge graph completion by predicting linkage between entities, which is a fundamental yet critical task. Semantic matching is a potential solution as it can deal with unseen entities, which the translational distance based methods struggle with. However, to achieve competitive performance as translational distance based methods, semantic matching based methods require large-scale datasets for the training purpose, which are typically unavailable in practical settings. Therefore, we employ the language model and introduce a novel knowledge graph architecture named LP-BERT, which contains two main stages: multi-task pre-training and knowledge graph fine-tuning. In the pre-training phase, three tasks are taken to drive the model to learn the relationship from triples by predicting either entities or relations. While in the fine-tuning phase, inspired by contrastive learning, we design a triple-style negative sampling in a batch, which greatly increases the proportion of negative sampling while keeping the training time almost unchanged. Furthermore, we propose a new data augmentation method utilizing the inverse relationship of triples to improve the performance and robustness of the model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct extensive experiments on three widely-used datasets, WN18RR, FB15k-237, and UMLS. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our methods, and our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on WN18RR and FB15k-237 datasets. Significantly, Hits@10 indicator is improved by 5% from previous state-of-the-art result on the WN18RR dataset while reaching 100% on the UMLS dataset.

Multiplexed long-range electrohydrodynamic transport and nano-optical trapping with cascaded bowtie photonic crystal nanobeams

Photonic crystal cavities with bowtie defects that combine ultra-high Q and ultra-low mode volume are theoretically studied for low-power nanoscale optical trapping. By harnessing the localized heating of the water layer near the bowtie region, combined with an applied alternating current electric field, this system provides long-range electrohydrodynamic transport of particles with average velocities of 30 $\mathrm{μm/s}$ towards the bowtie region on demand by switching the input wavelength. Once transported to a given bowtie region, synergistic interaction of optical gradient and attractive negative thermophoretic forces stably trap a 10 nm quantum dot in a potential well with a depth of 10 $k_\mathrm{B}T$ using a mW input power.

Mitosis domain generalization in histopathology images -- The MIDOG challenge

The density of mitotic figures within tumor tissue is known to be highly correlated with tumor proliferation and thus is an important marker in tumor grading. Recognition of mitotic figures by pathologists is known to be subject to a strong inter-rater bias, which limits the prognostic value. State-of-the-art deep learning methods can support the expert in this assessment but are known to strongly deteriorate when applied in a different clinical environment than was used for training. One decisive component in the underlying domain shift has been identified as the variability caused by using different whole slide scanners. The goal of the MICCAI MIDOG 2021 challenge has been to propose and evaluate methods that counter this domain shift and derive scanner-agnostic mitosis detection algorithms. The challenge used a training set of 200 cases, split across four scanning systems. As a test set, an additional 100 cases split across four scanning systems, including two previously unseen scanners, were given. The best approaches performed on an expert level, with the winning algorithm yielding an F_1 score of 0.748 (CI95: 0.704-0.781). In this paper, we evaluate and compare the approaches that were submitted to the challenge and identify methodological factors contributing to better performance.

Investigating Non-local Features for Neural Constituency Parsing

Thanks to the strong representation power of neural encoders, neural chart-based parsers have achieved highly competitive performance by using local features. Recently, it has been shown that non-local features in CRF structures lead to improvements. In this paper, we investigate injecting non-local features into the training process of a local span-based parser, by predicting constituent n-gram non-local patterns and ensuring consistency between non-local patterns and local constituents. Results show that our simple method gives better results than the self-attentive parser on both PTB and CTB. Besides, our method achieves state-of-the-art BERT-based performance on PTB (95.92 F1) and strong performance on CTB (92.31 F1). Our parser also achieves better or competitive performance in multilingual and zero-shot cross-domain settings compared with the baseline.
